Schiller fancies 2026 Australian derby outsider dezignation strongly
Tyler Schiller’s premier Group One engagement on the opening leg of The Championships at Randwick is Briasa, protector of the T J Smith Stakes crown, but he sees greater potential in his two lesser-noticed alternatives.
Besides that, the expert hoop connects with Paul Preusker’s Steparty ($19) in the Doncaster Mile (1600m) and Dezignation ($151) from Matt Smith’s stable for the ATC Australian Derby (2400m), both of whom he deems capable of major impacts.
Positioned as the extreme roughie in the Derby contest, Dezignation nevertheless surged to claim fifth from this weekend’s adversary Storm Leopard ($5) in the Tulloch Stakes (2000m), distinguishing himself through confirmed suitability for the full distance over many foes.
Having taken the mount on the gelding for the debut time in that prep run, Schiller departed favorably inclined.
“He sneaks in off a really good run in the Tulloch,” Schiller said.
“He got back and was taken off the bridle a long way from home, and he stayed on super strong. He just needed a bit further, which he is going to get this weekend.
“As long as he backs up, he’s going to have a really good chance, and he’s got a lovely barrier compared to his outside barrier the other day.
“If it’s a good staying test, he is going to be in the finish.”
Steparty similarly escapes the limelight in the Doncaster Mile, where talk dominates around impressive filly Sheza Alibi.
A repeated Group 1 podium finisher, the five-year-old has sampled Sydney runs earlier, including second in the 2024 The Ingham (1600m) via the Doncaster path.
Following successive victories in Tasmania this February, he enters Saturday’s showcase after a near-miss fifth to Tom Kitten during the All-Star Mile (1600m) at Flemington, aided by a favorable gate six for a conservative ride.
“He’s a really nice horse. He’s got a great attitude and he’s another one flying under the radar,” Schiller said.
“He got beaten a length and a bit in the All-Star Mile off a tough, wide run, and he’s going as good as ever.
“Fingers crossed, barrier six is a lovely barrier in the Doncaster. Hopefully he can bounce and get a bit of cover somewhere and save himself for late. He drops a lot in weight, so I think he might surprise a few people.”
Across recent three weight-for-age efforts, Steparty managed 59kg, dropping to 51.5kg for Randwick.
Schiller pursues an initial Derby conquest alongside a follow-up Doncaster Mile after Celestial Legend’s success under him two years ago.

Jack Pridham scored twice, Cameron Reid had a goal and three assists, and the Kitchener Rangers knocked off the Everett Silvertips 6-2 to record their second consecutive victory at the Memorial Cup tournament on Monday.
Christian Humphreys, Gabriel Chiarot and Cameron Arquette also scored for the Ontario Hockey League champions, who led 2-1 after the first period and 5-2 heading into the third at Prospera Place.

Hardik had rejoined MI ahead of IPL 2024 after an all-cash trade deal with Gujarat Titans, a franchise he had led to the title in 2022.
However, since his return to Mumbai, the powerhouse franchise has failed to qualify for the playoffs in two of his three seasons at the helm, including a dismal ninth-place finish in the 2026 edition.

Since 2009, the Dallas Cowboys have played their home games at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. For the past decade, the team’s headquarters and training facility have been based at The Star in Frisco — about 36 miles from the stadium.
Meanwhile, second-year Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer lives in McKinney, Texas — about a 30-minute drive from the team facility. To cut down on his daily commute, Schottenheimer has put his sprawling McKinney home on the market to replace it with a property closer to the team facility.
The listing agent for Schottenheimer’s soon-to-be former home said proximity to work ultimately drove the NFL coach’s decision to move.
“It really is just time being closer to work, and every minute counts, when you’re at that level, for him,” said Carrie Himel, a member of Compass Sports & Entertainment division, told The Dallas Morning News.

The 5,700-square-foot home was listed for $3.8 million as of mid-April, according to Zillow. For tax purposes, the Collin County Appraisal District valued the property at nearly $2 million.
Himel added that the home quickly attracted a buyer.

“It’s a private, serene oasis,” Himel said. “Every window, or every space, in that house looks at nature. So it really is a special property, it just needed a special buyer. We’re fortunate to get one pretty quickly.”
McKinney is located approximately 17 miles from The Star. It is unclear where exactly Schottenheimer intends to purchase his next home.

The four-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bath home was built in 2021, and its amenities include a movie room and an infinity-edge pool, according to the listing. The garage can accommodate three cars.
Schottenheimer was promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach in January 2025 following Mike McCarthy’s exit.

The home’s nature-filled setting gave the Schottenheimer family the opportunity to interact with local wildlife.

In late October, Schottenheimer recalled an unusual moment when an owl flew through an open sliding door and into his home during a game-planning meeting prior to a matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. The family later contacted animal control to remove the bird.
The Cowboys finished at 7-9-1 during Schottenheimer’s first year at the helm, falling short of advancing to the playoffs.

D Gukesh emerged victorious after a bruising, nerve-jangling marathon battle against Vincent Keymer, and R Praggnanandhaa outplayed Alireza Firouzja but world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen suffered a rare opening-round defeat at Norway Chess, which began amid towering bookshelves at the historic Deichman Bjorvika public library here.
Thanks to his Armageddon triumph after a draining 144-move slugfest that lasted nearly five hours, Gukesh pocketed 1.5 points, while Keymer settled for one after the classical game had ended in a stalemate.
The marathon encounter saw the Indian world champion visibly rattled in the closing stages, even seeking clarification from the arbiter over the move count as the game drifted towards an inevitable draw despite Keymer being a pawn up.
The German, however, remained ice-cool throughout the classical battle, continuing to press on before eventually losing the Armageddon decider. But the tie-break itself ended swiftly, with Gukesh unleashing the decisive 15.Bh6, a move that sealed Keymer’s fate.
Praggnanandhaa and American Grandmaster Wesley So produced a hard-fought classical draw in a finely balanced contest before the Indian No. 2 prevailed in the Armageddon tie-break with a sharp attacking display to pocket the extra point.
However, the biggest talking point of the day was defending champion Carlsen suffering a rare defeat in classical chess to Firouzja, who claimed all three points.
The Frenchman, confined to a wheelchair after recently injuring his ankle at the Superbet Chess Classic Romania and with his foot firmly strapped in a protective “moon shoe”, showed remarkable grit and composure to stun home favourite and world No. 1 Carlsen on his own turf.
Carlsen looked in control for large parts of the contest, but crippling time trouble led to a costly blunder that handed the initiative to Firouzja. The French grandmaster capitalised with clinical precision, securing a statement victory over the hometown favourite and surging to the top of the standings.
With three points, Firouzja grabbed the early lead in the 10-round tournament, while Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa were joint second with 1.5 points apiece. Wesley So and Keymer trailed on one point each, while Carlsen is yet to open his account.
In the women’s section, the tournament also began with fighting chess and an early upset as Bibisara Assaubayeva scored an impressive classical victory over Indian No. 1 Humpy Koneru.
The Kazakh star handled the complications confidently, capitalised on her middlegame chances and converted her advantage with precision to make an excellent start to the tournament.
Defending champion Anna Muzychuk and Zhu Jiner played out a closely fought classical draw before Zhu prevailed in the Armageddon tie-break to secure the extra half point.
Reigning women’s world champion Ju Wenjun and Divya Deshmukh also shared the honours in classical chess after a tense battle in which the Chinese pressed hard for victory. Divya, however, produced a spirited display in Armageddon to clinch the tie-break win.
After the opening round, Bibisara leads the women’s standings, while Divya and Zhu are joint second on 1.5 points each. Muzychuk and Wenjun have one point apiece, while Humpy is yet to open her account.

A place in the final is up for grabs as Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2026 at picturesque Dharamsala on Tuesday. Both teams entered the playoffs tied at 18 points from 14 matches, but RCB pipped GT for the top spot due to a superior net run-rate. However, rain could play spoilsport in the contest, with some showers expected ahead of the toss at the mesmerizing HPCA Stadium. As per AccuWeather, there could be around 14 to 25 percent cloud cover in the city, alongside an 80 percent probability of rain.
In case of a rain washout, RCB will progress to the final as they finished ahead of GT in the points table due to better net run-rate. Since there is no reserve day for Qualifer 1, Eliminator or Qualifier 2, the team that finished higher on the league stage points table has the advantage.
As per the IPL format, the top two teams in the standings qualify for Qualifier 1, and the winner of the match will directly enter the final, while the losing team will get another opportunity through Qualifier 2. As per IPL rules, officials can bypass the full-length innings and schedule a standalone Super Over to decide the winner if rain does not permit any action.
RCB and GT finished first and second in the points table, respectively, with 18 points each and separated only by net run rate. They have tied 1-1 head-to-head this season and 4-4 overall.
Table topper RCB’s one of the five defeats has come against GT, whose solid bowling unit troubled them. But the reigning champions turned the tables and avenged their loss in the reverse fixture. Both franchises are in pursuit of their second IPL silverware. While the defending champions RCB aim to secure back-to-back titles, GT are determined to reclaim the championship glory they first achieved during their debut season in 2022.

Mumbai Indians’ early exit from IPL 2026 has raised questions over Hardik Pandya‘s leadership credentials, with some experts and fans suggesting that the all-rounder shouldn’t lead the team next season. Kieron Pollard, the batting coach of the franchise, insisted that there would be no finger-pointing at captain Hardik despite the franchise finishing ninth in the standings with just eight points.
“From a leadership perspective on Hardik, yes, it has not gone as well as he would have wanted as an individual,” Pollard told reporters after the match.
“It might not have gone how we would have wanted as a management staff. But one thing you (should) know that we have tried each and everything to give him the best opportunity to lead the franchise, to do well.” Pollard said it was a collective failure of the Mumbai Indians group.
“No one is going to sit here and put blame on point fingers. When you lose, especially, you have to look at it from a collective perspective. You win some, you lose some. But, at the end of the day, I wouldn’t question certain things,” he said.

CLEVELAND — Donovan Mitchell and the Cavaliers finally got past the second round and face-planted in the Eastern Conference finals.
They weren’t ready for the Knicks or the big stage.
The lights were too bright again.
Cleveland’s season ended with a resounding, demoralizing and embarrassing 130-93 loss on Monday night in Game 4 to the New York Knicks, who swept the series and advanced to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.
Playing on tired and wobbly legs after failing to put Toronto and Detroit away before seven games in the earlier rounds, the Cavs, whose fate was sealed when they blew a 22-point lead in the fourth quarter and lost Game 1 at Madison Square Garden, had no answer for anything the Knicks threw at them.
They got out-played, out-shot, out-rebounded and out-coached.
“We did this to ourselves,” said Mitchell, who scored 31 in the close-out loss. “We didn’t give our team a chance because we didn’t take care of business. You can’t play with your food. We had an opportunity in Game 1 and we blew that.
“We had an opportunity, but give credit where credit is due.”
And now that they’ve fallen short, the Cavs head into what will likely be a tumultuous summer that will trigger a major roster overhaul and perhaps other moves.
This wasn’t the plan. Cleveland made a blockbuster trade at the deadline in February, sending guard Darius Garland, part of its “Core Four” to the Los Angeles Clippers for James Harden, who was supposed to take pressure off Mitchell.
Cleveland’s top player approved the Garland swap, but other than a few games here and there, he and Harden never truly meshed as intended. The Cavs, who just 28.9% (48 of 166) on 3-pointers in the series, never outgrew their growing pains.
“This was the first time going through what we were going to go through,” said Harden. “Now we have to take another two steps and get even better. … I feel like we didn’t have a fair chance. We did play one quarter of Cavs basketball offensively. If you’re not making shots, you’re not going to beat anybody.”
Harden has a $42.3 million player option for next season that he’s expected to decline to re-sign with the Cavs as a free agent. But the 36-year-old didn’t perform up to offensive expectations and was a virtual turnstile on defense.
Mitchell’s future is more complicated. He can be offered a five-year, $350 million super-max extension by the Cavs as early as this offseason, but the team will likely wait due to several financial factors, and still must decide if the seven-time All-Star is worth the investment.
With the Knicks up by 33 in the fourth, Mitchell and Cleveland’s other starters were mercifully replaced. The 29-year-old went to the bench and watched a team he once cheered for as a kid win its 11th straight playoff game.
Mitchell feels the Cavs took a significant step this season and he’s determined to get Cleveland a title.
“I love it here,” he said when asked about the extension. “I don’t know how else to say it. I have no doubt these guys can get there. We have unfinished business.”
Cleveland’s stunning flame-out in the conference finals is only going to fuel more speculation about coach Kenny Atkinson’s future. He guided the team to a No. 1 seed in his first season a year ago before a disappointing, second-round exit against Indiana.
Atkinson helped the Cavs take a step deeper into the postseason, but it’s not certain that will be enough to satisfy demanding owner Dan Gilbert, who has dropped over $400 million on a team that hasn’t delivered him a second title.
Harden and Mitchell staunchly defended Atkinson.
“We did something we haven’t done since 2018,” Mitchell said. “I love Kenny. We love Kenny. We ride with Kenny. That’s all that matters. We’re in this together.”
New York exposed all of Cleveland’s on-court flaws and may have set the stage for Gilbert to make even bolder moves. There’s little doubt that seeing his team get completely overwhelmed in Game 4 — with thousands of New York fans chanting “Knicks in 4!” — stung badly.
The Cavs will closely monitor superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo’s unsettled situation in Milwaukee. The Bucks have reportedly had past interest in 24-year-old Cleveland forward Evan Mobley.
And then there’s LeBron James and the possibility the NBA’s all-time scoring leader could bring his storied career full circle by coming back home a second time. He’s a free agent, currently at odds with the Los Angeles Lakers and surveying the landscape.
At the moment, Cleveland appears to need him again.
When asked, Mitchell wouldn’t even entertain the possibility of joining forces with James. His primary concern was what went wrong against the Knicks.
“We got swept,” he said. “We’ve got to own it.”

Sankey favors expanding the current field of 12 to 16, but the Big Ten, ACC and Big 12 prefer a 24-team field.
A week ago, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti said that the schools in his conference are ready to vote on a 24-team field and would be willing to wait if the SEC does not concur.
The two commissioners must come to an agreement by Dec. 1 for any playoff expansion for the 2027-28 season.
In addressing reporters, Sankey said that the league would not “have a unanimous vote right now on a number.”
Instead, Sankey said the league would study all aspects of the 24-team bracket this week, including what the risks would be.
“Four to 12 was monumental, I think it was justifiable, and you want to be careful about how far you go,” he said.
An expansion to 24 would almost certainly eliminate conference championship games, something Sankey is completely averse to. He cited current SEC television contracts as being an impediment to the expansion, in addition to the major revenue drain the loss of an SEC championship game would cause. Last week, Georgia president Jere Morehead came out against the expansion to a 24-team bracket.
“I was OK with going to 16,” he told The Athletic. “I thought that was a good number. But 24 scares me, particularly jumping from 12 to 24. If we went to 16 and tried that for a few years, see how it goes, and then we can evaluate whether we should go to 24. And from my standpoint, I would just stay at 12 then, if we can’t get an agreement on 16.”
However, he deferred the decision to Sankey, and a concurrence between the two leaders became apparent on Monday.
