Brad Pauls anticipates Denzel Bentley rematch after Goldsmith clash

There is no shortage of respect between Brad Pauls and Denzel Bentley, yet they both know a middleweight rematch is becoming increasingly more likely.

The pair squared off for Pauls’ British title, and the vacant European strap, in December 2024, when the challenger triumphed by unanimous decision in a competitive contest.

Since then, both have claimed significant stoppages, with Bentley coming off a seventh-round finish over Endry Saavedra for the WBO ‘interim’ title in April and Pauls halting Shakiel Thompson with a stunning ninth-round onslaught in March.

Prior to his victory, Pauls had been sparring his former foe and, even ahead of his next outing, the two of them have shared plenty of rounds.

With both signed to Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions, though, it could be a matter of time before they once again meet under the bright lights.

Speaking with Boxing News, Pauls reveals that he and Bentley have already discussed this possibility.

“I really like Denzel, he’s a cool guy, but we’ve both been saying that, if we keep winning, [Queensberry are] going to make us fight again. It makes complete sense, especially if I get a world title. We’d have to stop sparring but, more than likely, we’ll end up fighting again.”

With Bentley in line for an eventual world title shot, Pauls would need to leverage his No.12 ranking with the IBF in order to secure their unification match.

The more likely route, however, would be a direct WBO title challenge, given Pauls’ No.4 ranking with the sanctioning body and the possibility of Bentley being elevated to full champion; otherwise the Londoner will need to defeat Janibek Alimkhanuly once the Uzbek returns from his year-long doping suspension.

Either way, it seems that Pauls is edging closer to a major opportunity following his tremendous underdog victory over Thompson.

After trailing on the judges’ scorecards, ‘The Newquay Bomb’ took a gamble in round nine and managed to suddenly swing the result in his favour.

Reflecting on his performance, Pauls believes it was his overall experience that made a considerable difference.

“It’s got to add 10 or 15%. I always go back to the [Tyler] Denny fight – my first fight on TV – and it really threw me off.
“But since then, it all just feels familiar – the big occasions, the cameras, the massive venues. Going into the late rounds against Shakiel, that’s when you pull on the experience to get you through.
“A member of my corner team, Ellis [Steward], said: ‘I’d rather you get knocked out trying to knock him out than just play it safe and cruise it to a points loss’. And I was like, ‘I’ve got two rounds left – I need to start taking big chances’.”

Sure enough, the risk paid off as Pauls pulled off a sizable upset to secure his place on the undercard of Ryan Garner vs Michael Magnesi at St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton, this Saturday.

The 33-year-old will face tricky southpaw Bradley Goldsmith, having just defeated another lefty in Thompson.

If he emerges victorious then Pauls could end up in another domestic dustup later this year, potentially against Sam Gilley, who comes off a clinical fifth-round stoppage over Aston Brown.

“There were about eight names in the hat. [Gilley] was one of the first names but I think my management team would rather do it at the end of the year, when it could become a bigger fight.
“But Queensberry were like, ‘You’re not getting no easy fight’, so that’s how I ended up with Bradley Goldsmith.”

Whether he ends up facing Gilley, Bentley or a totally different fighter, Pauls’ ultimate goal is to headline a televised show in the South West of England.

From a logistical perspective, the nearest venue to Newquay, his home town, is Plymouth Argyle’s Home Park Stadium, where he hopes to eventually fight for world honours.

“We could do it at Plymouth Argyle [Home Park Stadium]. There’s a few more fighters coming out of the South West, like [British welterweight champion] Constantine Ursu.
“That’d be a dream, to bring big time boxing to the South West.”

In order for Pauls to keep this dream alive, he must first take care of the Dominic Ingle-trained Goldsmith.

Al Riffa’s 2026 staying credentials to be proven at Royal Ascot

Al Riffa, the horse acquired with the ambition of winning a Melbourne Cup, will have the chance to definitively prove his elite stayer status on day three of the 2026 Royal Ascot meeting.

The six-year-old gelding is set to be tested over 4014 metres in the week’s premier race, the Group 1 Gold Cup, which will be broadcast live at 1:15 am Friday AEST.

Jamie Lovett of Australian Bloodstock, the owners who purchased Al Riffa just prior to last year’s Spring Carnival, admitted there was a question mark over the son of Wootton Bassett’s ability to handle the extreme distance of the Gold Cup, indicating the race tempo would be critical.

“It will depend on how the race was run, if it was a brutally run race I’m tipping no (he won’t stay), but if it was one where they hack around like they’re in training down around the back and then they zip up, he can get away with it,” he said.

Al Riffa’s turn of foot was a standout feature in his most recent performance, the Group 1 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier (3100m) at Longchamp on May 21, where he made a strong late charge to finish less than half a length behind the winner, having been held up in the straight.

Al Riffa has garnered significant support in the Gold Cup betting markets since the field was announced earlier this week, with UK bookmakers now offering him at odds as short as $6.50.

The current favourite at $3 is last year’s English St Leger Stakes winner, Scandinavia, while the defending champion, Trawlerman, is priced at $4.

Al Riffa made an appearance at Royal Ascot last year, finishing second to Rebel’s Romance in the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes (2405m), a race that was also considered for him this year.

The decision by O’Brien to target the Gold Cup instead of the Hardwicke Stakes could potentially leave the door open for Al Riffa’s return to Flemington. In last year’s Melbourne Cup, he finished seventh, beaten by just over nine lengths under 59kg.

His last victory came in the Group 1 Irish St Leger (2816m) prior to his Melbourne Cup run last year. Lovett stated that a return to Flemington was unlikely, though not entirely ruled out.

“Unlikely but it would depend what’s in it, if he got 57.5 (kilos) you’d definitely be tempted,” Lovett said.

“I thought last year was inconclusive. He obviously carried weight, but he drew wide and got back.

“I’m not saying he couldn’t carry weight in the Melbourne Cup with the right draw and he got the right run around.”

Leo Cullen to Leave Leinster Head Coach Role After 2026/27

Leo Cullen’s remarkable 12-year spell as Leinster head coach is set to come to an end, with the province expected to confirm that he will leave his role at the conclusion of the 2026/27 season.

The decision brings to a close one of the most successful coaching eras in Irish provincial rugby. Since taking charge in 2015, the former Leinster captain has overseen a period of sustained excellence, delivering the 2018 Champions Cup and six URC titles, including last Friday’s triumph.

However, his tenure will also be remembered for a series of agonising European near misses. Leinster reached five Champions Cup finals after their 2018 success but fell short in 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024 and again in 2026, leading to growing scrutiny over the province’s inability to convert dominance into European silverware.

End of an Era

Cullen has become synonymous with Leinster rugby, both as a player and coach. Under his leadership, the province consistently produced Ireland internationals and remained one of Europe’s strongest clubs, regularly reaching the latter stages of the Champions Cup and URC.

Yet the pressure surrounding those repeated final defeats intensified over recent seasons, despite domestic success.

The IRFU and Leinster are expected to begin the search for his successor ahead of the 2027 season.

Legacy Secure

Despite those recent controversies, Cullen’s legacy is unlikely to be defined by his final press conferences.

Instead, he leaves having maintained Leinster as one of Europe’s elite clubs for more than a decade, helping develop the core of Ireland’s recent international success while delivering consistent silverware.

The challenge for his successor will be significant. Domestically, Leinster remain the benchmark. In Europe, however, the expectation will be to end a run of five Champions Cup final defeats and return the game’s biggest club prize to Dublin.

For Cullen, the final season of his tenure now presents one last opportunity to finish with the European title that has so narrowly eluded Leinster in recent years.

Speaking about his departure from the role Head Coach Leo Cullen said: “By the end of next season, in 2027, I will have been in my current job for 12 years. It’ll also be 32 years since I first represented Leinster as a Schools player! So, I think the timing will be right for me to move on to a new challenge.

“I managed 10 years as a player on different Leinster teams before moving to Leicester in 2005 and then returning to Leinster in 2007 to go on to experience some of the most amazing days imaginable.

“As many of you will know, I’m committed to Leinster up until the end of next season, and I intend to honour my contract, as I always have done.

“We’re moving back to Laya Arena at the start of next season, and we can’t wait for that homecoming. We also have players leaving Leinster and other players who’ll potentially be coming in. So, I think it’s good to have continuity and certainty heading into the summer.

“We have a fantastic group of coaches, staff and players here and I know the club will do everything to ensure continuity and stability – two cornerstones of Leinster Rugby. 

“I want to thank the Leinster Professional Game Board, in particular Shane Nolan, Guy Easterby and Frank Doherty, for their support throughout this process and indeed during my time as Leinster Head Coach.

“And to my family, friends and all Leinster supporters a huge thanks also.”

Leinster Rugby CEO, Shane Nolan said: “I would like to thank Leo for everything he has done as the Head Coach of Leinster Rugby, his achievements in the role speak for themselves, including winning seven trophies in 11 years culminating in a brilliant URC Grand Final win at Croke Park last Friday. Wyndham Clark’s U.S. Open fan abuse was so bad, his psychologist took cover

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — It started on the first hole and didn’t cease until the final putt had dropped on 18: jeers, barbs, pleas for balls to roll off greens and into bunkers. Sunday at the U.S. Open was Wyndham Clark vs. the world — or at least vs. the Hamptons.

“Man, they definitely didn’t want me to win,” Clark said afterward.

But win he did: with a clutch lag putt from 52 feet on the 72nd hole that secured him a fourth-round three-over 73, a four-under week and one-shot win over hard-charging Sam Burns.

Not everyone was rooting against Clark. Among his supporters was Julie Elion, who since 2022 has been Clark’s sports psychologist — a partnership that, at first, didn’t come easily. “I was a little reluctant to do it,” Clark said after his win at the 2023 U.S. Open at L.A. Country Club. “I’m just so glad that she was brought into my life.” Clark lauded Elion’s “great calmness and presence about her that just makes me calm and relaxed.”

When Elion first met Clark, she encountered a player who, she has said, was filled with negativity and self-doubt. “We had a little heart to heart,” Elion said on Season 2 of Netflix’s “Full Swing.” “I was like ‘Buddy, you’re on the verge of not being on the PGA Tour or on the verge of being a star. You have to make a change because you can’t keep doing this to yourself.’”

This was a way of thinking and living that was deeply counterproductive and even destructive. On “Full Swing,” Clark said, “I had trained my mind over years of belittling myself and thinking negatively, locking myself in rooms and not coming out for a long time or drinking to excess or being mean to people. I didn’t want to play golf.” But with Elion’s counsel, Clark worked on himself, and changes were made. He started feeling better about himself and his abilities. In May 2023, he won his first PGA Tour title, the Wells Fargo at Quail Hollow. The following month, he became a major champion at LACC.

This week at Shinnecock, Clark backed up that U.S. Open win — much to the dismay of the New York galleries, who seemingly were turned off by Clark’s “bad guy” persona, which was amplified by his boorish behavior at the 2025 U.S. Open, where after missing the cut he took out his rage on a couple of Oakmont’s museum-piece lockers.

On Sunday, as Clark plotted his way around the exacting test that is William Flynn’s Shinnecock design, ill will coated him like spilled paint on a countertop. The heckling got so bad that at least a couple of fans were shown the door.

Elion heard it. How couldn’t she have? On the 8th hole, she said she was getting so “pissed” by the crowd’s commentary that she needed to retreat from the course. “It got to me,” she said. “I had to go inside and talk to somebody.”

Not that the chilly reception had come as any surprise.

“We planned,” Elion said. “We knew.”

Elion compared the crowd’s vitriol to what Clark encountered at the 2023 U.S. Open, when all of California (and many parts beyond) were pulling for Rickie Fowler to finally bag a major. “When everyone yelled, ‘Rickie!’” Elion said, “he yelled, ‘Wyndham!’ inside.” On Sunday, Elion said, Clark took a similar approach, staying tightly dialed on his goals and committing to not letting the fans get to him.

As recently as Saturday night, though, Elion wasn’t convinced that Clark was in a good mental space. In the wake of his third round that included bogies in two of his last four holes, Clark texted Elion a string of angry-face emojis accompanied by a note about how many shots he’d felt he left on the course.

“I’m like, ‘Oh, my God, here we go again,’” Elion said.

But on Sunday, Clark, in a swirl of malice, found serenity. “Anytime someone said something negative to me, I replaced it with something positive,” he said. Clark’s caddie, David Pelekoudas (aka “Big Wave Dave”), was also critical. “I was kind of making jokes about it with Dave where if we heard someone cheer for me, I’d go, ‘Oh, there’s one person that likes me,’” Clark said. “So we would kind of make jokes and make it maybe a little light-hearted.”

Being a cold-blooded closer didn’t hurt Clark’s cause, either. He let the field back, but never all the way back — which points to what might be his strongest mental tool of all.

“That’s also what makes him great,” Elion said. “He’s so competitive.”

NEW DELHI: World champion D Gukesh is preparing to defend his title against Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov later this year, and Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran believes the young Indian needs to sharpen some areas of his game to stay ahead. According to Sasikiran, Gukesh’s habit of creating highly complicated positions makes him dangerous, but it also often leads to time pressure.“Sometimes Gukesh takes too much risk by his unconventional play creating chaos and imbalance … in a sense, he wants to let things go out of control, it does not matter if the position is completely in chaos,” Sasikiran told PTI.“He is a champion of that kind of a game but he often gets into time trouble. So, one thing I’d advise him to concentrate on is speeding up his calculation, he definitely needs to speed up, because you don’t want to consistently find yourself in a scenario where your opponent is driving you into time trouble.”The former second of five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand also stressed that strong preparation and memorisation are essential at the highest level. Gukesh has had mixed results since winning the world title, struggling in several major classical tournaments. Sasikiran said Gukesh should focus on putting opponents in uncomfortable situations and study Sindarov’s weaknesses closely. He warned that the challenger is extremely well prepared and relies heavily on memory and fast play.“From what I have seen from Sindarov, all this candidate stuff, he is also making some complications, he had prepared very deeply for the Candidates tournament. I mean very high level of chess, so this world championship match is going to be very tough,” he explained.He added that Gukesh must improve his conversion of technical positions and avoid missing chances. However, the Chennai-based Grandmaster feels experience could work in the Indian’s favour.“But Gukesh has already been at that level, he has already played a world championship match, so match experience is in Gukesh’s favour, but the challenger also carries momentum,” he added.Sasikiran believes Gukesh and his team have already narrowed down a few opening choices and will continue preparing right until the match begins.

There’s no time like the present in that regard against Jordan, which gave up three goals to Austria in their opener. Algeria were shut out against Argentina, so look for them to lean on the veteran Mahrez, who has some major juice at this price.

Coeur Volante’s 2026 plans: No Tatts Tiara, aiming for Caulfield success

This time in 2025, Coeur Volante was being prepared for the Tattersalls Tiara. While her days as a top-tier Group 1 contender may have passed, there’s still significant prize money available.

The daughter of Proisir, a recent winner at Sandown, is set to pursue more earnings in the $150,000 open handicap over 1400 metres at Caulfield next Saturday.

The five-year-old mare is very likely headed for Widden’s breeding barn later this year, where she will be covered by Zoustar. Co-trainer Ben Hayes stated there’s no compelling reason to cease her racing career in the interim.

“It’s a chance for her to make some more money before the new breeding season,” he explained.

“She’s already a Group 2 winner and the only way you can improve the pedigree is winning a Group 1 and the only Group 1 left is the Tatts Tiara, which is next week and she’s not running there.

“She’ll probably race into spring.”

Coeur Volante achieved victory in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) under the guidance of Mike Moroney and Glen Thompson, less than a week before Moroney’s passing in February of the prior year. Thompson then took over the training of the $90,000 Karaka yearling. Earlier in her career, she had won the Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley and the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield.

She experienced an unlucky fourth place in the 2023 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m), which was won by Joliestar.

Last year’s Tattersalls Tiara was her most recent Group 1 start, where she finished second-last in the field of 18 runners.

The previous owners offered Coeur Volante for sale via Inglis Digital in November, where she was purchased by Widden and Bangaloe Stud for $500,000. Since then, in two starts for her new owners, she finished third in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes before her winning performance over 1400m at Sandown on June 13.

“It’s all worked out well with her and she was a nice, impressive win,” Hayes commented.

“It was really good to get her back in the winner’s stall.”

Scottie Scheffler leaves U.S. Open fixated on 1 conundrum

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Scottie Scheffler is confused. Sure, he’s the best in the world at playing this impossible game. He’s improved every year since turning pro. He wins more frequently than any golfer since Tiger Woods. But he’s puzzled right now, confronting a conundrum.

What is happening in his first rounds?

Scheffler was stuck on that thought Sunday night, about 20 minutes after his first attempt to finish the career grand slam had finished.

“At the end of the day, I don’t know exactly what it is,” he said. “I’ve been pretty good in first rounds over the last few years, and for some reason, the sharpness just hasn’t been there early in tournaments. I haven’t had those leads that I’ve needed in order to win tournaments. I’ve been playing catch-up all year.”

It would have taken a final-round 67 — rather than the 71 he logged — to get into a playoff with Wyndham Clark, the U.S. Open champ, but what Scheffler seems zeroed in on is that Thursday 72. It was eight shots worse than Clark’s opening 64 and it created a divide the world No. 1 couldn’t close over 54 holes in about 54 hours. If he had another 18, he might have gotten closer. If, if, if.

For now, as onlookers, the smartest course of action seems to be to shrug it off, to stay the course, to trust in Scottie. He remains the most gifted golfer we’ve seen in ages, and his Thursday hiccups are most likely just hiccups. It would feel improper and surprising if Scheffler never bags a U.S. Open, if he never finishes off his career grand slam. He’s finished top 10 at this event five times. We’ll comfortably pick up the Slamspeak next June, and with even greater fervor. It’ll be at Pebble Beach, a course he knows far better than Shinnecock.

Still, it’s worth bookmarking our shoulda-coulda thoughts. They’re not nothing. Scheffler’s season, though brilliant via big-picture analytics, has been defined by Thursday letdowns with self-inflicted errors. It keeps happening. He hasn’t had many 36-hole leads. He hasn’t had many 54-hole leads. His 2026 has left him shaking his head at times, so much that simply being in the final pairing Sunday felt, “good to be kind of back in the arena [and not] on the outside looking in.”

And what to make of the grand slam? This was only Scheffler’s first chance, but it was one of his best chances in a U.S. Open. For now, that’s no big deal. That’s a step in the right direction. But the longer that box remains unchecked, the more difficult the chase will start to feel. If I had only … only worsens over time.

Phil Mickelson had 34 cracks at the U.S. Open and came up empty 34 times. Since winning the 2017 Open Championship, Jordan Spieth has had 10 tries at the PGA, and has never gotten close. Tom Watson ended his career with 10 top 10s at the PGA but zero firsts. Many single-name legends of the sport reached the same imperfect tally: Trevino, Snead, Arnie. Even Byron Nelson, whose event gave Scheffler his first PGA Tour start, fell just shy.

The good thing for Scheffler? He probably isn’t remotely worried about any of that. Still, his memory is good enough to remember slipping the green jacket onto Rory McIlroy’s shoulders when he finished his slam.

If Scheffler is aware of anything in particular, it’s how tight the margins will be and how specific his task. The requirement — winning the toughest tournament of the year, with one chance every year — feels almost unfair. Does Scheffler have 20 more tries? Is it more like 15? Fewer than that? At the U.S. Open, opportunities slip away before you can register them as opportunities. His first round felt mediocre on Thursday morning. On Thursday evening it was a thorn in his side. On Sunday night, it was the only thing he could cite to explain why Wyndham Clark was holding the only silver missing from Scheffler’s trophy case.

“Yeah,” he said to finish his press conference, “that’s as good as I’m going to be able to elaborate.”

It was the final answer of his press conference Sunday night, and a sufficient one for the moment. There’ll be time for him to solve the grand-slam quest; as he wrapped up Sunday he was trying to solve something a bit simpler. It was Father’s Day and his young son, Bennett was seated on the floor next to him, cooing out of sight from the cameras. It was Scheffler’s 30th birthday, too. Life outside of golf was reaching back out to grab him. Scheffler rose from the podium, slid on a backpack inscribed with the name of his second son, Remy, scooped Bennett into his arms and moved on from Shinnecock.

“Alright buddy, let’s go get dinner,” he said, with the peace of someone who doesn’t think like the rest of us do.

“Pizza? Pizzaaa.”
