Ex-NFL Star Can’t Get Over Travis Kelce’s Wedding Snub
Travis Kelce may have started a feud with retired NFL player Will Compton over his wedding to Taylor Swift.
The drama began after the former athlete noticed he was the only one out of Travis’s Tight End University group who didn’t score an invite to the biggest union of the year.
Naturally, the exclusion did not sit right with Will Compton, who recently doubled down on calling Travis Kelce out for subbing him. However, some fans believe his past actions are to blame.

Compton might be listening to Swift’s “Bad Blood” on repeat, as he dropped a not-so-subtle, shady remark at Kelce following viral media coverage of his absence from the wedding. He referenced an article detailing his reaction to the snub alongside the words:
“Don’t think I’ve ever seen Dean Blandino at Tight End University.”
Compton dropped the post on X, sarcastically adding “so funny” when a fan joked that it was wild his reaction to the wedding snub made the news.
Another fan hopped on the fun, claiming they would happily watch the retired NFL star fight it out in a cage match with Kelce and Blandino.
Fans Have Mixed Reactions To The Former Athlete’s Shady Post
The comments were filled with mixed reactions, with many supporting Compton while others poked fun at the situation. An X user echoed support for a fight between the group, noting they would love to watch their feud on WWE’s SummerSlam.
The teasing comments continued with someone laughing at the headline about Compton’s reaction, while another fan made a meme about the retired athlete’s reaction to the snub. On the other hand, the majority took Compton’s side, stunned by Kelce’s actions.
Someone wondered why sports analysts like Baldoni, who works for Fox Sports, scored an invite to the wedding when Compton had a closer relationship with Kelce. A fellow supporter dropped proof of the retired athlete’s close relationship with the newlyweds, sharing a throwback picture.
“Never saw Dean Brandino get Taylor Swift to do the Will Compton pose…,” the fan captioned the image. In the snap, the “Opalite” singer had flexed her muscles, posing next to Kelce, Compton, and his “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast co-host, Taylor Lewan.
Did Will Compton’s Past Play A Role In The Wedding Invite Snub?

The mixed reactions continued, with some fans blaming Compton’s past comments about Swift for the wedding snub. “Maybe don’t sh-t talk his fiancé,” a critic wrote, with another adding, “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”
These comments referenced one of Compton’s most controversial moments, where Swifties blew a fuse over his remark about the singer. The drama occurred in September 2025 on an episode of ESPN’s “Get Up,” as shared by The Times Of India.
On the show, the former NFL star seemingly implied Kelce’s engagement to Swift was a distraction from the game. He immediately sparked outrage for his words, with fans dragging him on social media platforms like X for allegedly targeting the Grammy winner.
How Will Compton Initially Reacted To The Wedding Snub

Before his recent comments about Kelce’s wedding snub, The Blast reported that Compton had shared his initial reaction to the situation during a surprise interview. Dave Portnoy had called him on the Monday, July 6 episode of his “Wake Up Barstool” podcast to ask for his thoughts.
Portnoy had been surprised that the majority of Kelce’s Tight End University group had attended the wedding without Compton. Bobby Joseph Hebert III, better known as T-Bob Hebert, noted the former athlete probably didn’t get an invite because he was in Italy.
However, the media personality explained that he never even got the chance to decline the event because he never received an invitation. Compton confessed that he initially didn’t think much about the snub until he started seeing pictures from all the guests and was “kind of flabbergasted” by his exclusion.
Travis Kelce And Taylor Swift’s Wedding Guests Allegedly Forced To Stand

Compton may have dodged a bullet by not getting an invite following claims of a “sh-t show.” The Blast shared that sources claimed Kelce and Swift were not prepared for the sheer number of guests at their wedding, with the reception turning somewhat chaotic.
The ceremony reportedly did not feature a traditional seated dinner, with guests moving between a variety of buffet stations to grab a meal before struggling to find a place to eat. One source claimed the venue became crowded as guests attempted to navigate the food stations and limited seating arrangements.
The queue allegedly left many standing in long lines for food. However, the wait appeared to be worth it, with insiders claiming guests were impressed by the menu. They were treated to a variety of delicacies, including sushi, pasta, salads, chicken, filet mignon, and a range of American, Italian, and Asian-inspired dishes.
Will Travis Kelce respond to Will Compton’s wedding snub claims?

‘Game of Thrones’ Needs To Copy Harry Potter To Fix Its Greatest Mistake
The current season of House of the Dragon is in full swing, sucking everyone back into the bloody politics of Westeros. The show is so good that it has almost made up for the stinker that was the Game of Thrones finale — almost. Indeed, the now-infamous Season 8 of what used to be the biggest show on Earth was so disastrous that it threatened to ruin the franchise’s legacy completely. Of course, A Song of Ice and Fire has endured, but many of us still feel frustrated at how mishandled the show’s finale was, especially everything concerning the White Walkers and the Night King.
Seven years later, the Long Night and its poor execution are still a sore subject for Thrones fans, who wish they could’ve experienced the threat of the White Walkers in all its icy glory. As it turns out, maybe they still can. The Harry Potter saga addressed one of its biggest shortcomings — a lack of worldbuilding beyond the main story — with the video game Hogwarts Legacy, a massive commercial and critical success that revitalized interest in the series and finally gave us a glimpse at the Wizarding World of the past. Game of Thrones could follow the same route, using a video game to explore the White Walkers’ history and finally do justice to these incredible villains.
‘Game of Thrones’ Failed the White Walkers
It’s not an overstatement to say Game of Thrones completely butchered the White Walkers’ story. Season 8 tried to rush through the two main stories — the White Walkers and Daenerys’ (Emilia Clarke) Mad Queen arc — in just six episodes. In the process, it ruined both narratives, completely assassinating Dany’s character and delivering a Long Night that was incredibly underwhelming and poorly lit and staged. And it was such a shame, because the show did a great job setting up the White Walker threat for six seasons, only to drop the ball at the last minute.
It’s not like HBO doesn’t know how badly the show messed up with the White Walkers. In fact, the network even tried to make a show about the first Long Night, tentatively titled Bloodmoon. A Pilot was made, with big names like Oscar nominees Naomi Watts and Miranda Richardson in leading roles and a premise said to be set during the Age of Heroes. The plot hinted at revealing more about the secrets behind the White Walkers, with the suggestion that we’d actually get to see the first Long Night as an entire generation of Westeros in darkness, instead of the one night we saw on the show. Alas, the show never made it past the Pilot stage, and HBO unceremoniously cancelled it hours before greenlighting House of the Dragon.
And so, we’re back to square one. The White Walkers are still one of the World of Ice and Fire‘s biggest mysteries. The show did reveal a few hints here and there about their nature and origins, but chose to keep them in the dark for the most part. As for the promise of their corruptive and destructive power, we never saw that beyond Hardhome, with the show instead rushing to an all-too-convenient ending where killing the Night King magically destroyed the entire army. It might make some degree of sense, but it felt more like a cop-out.
A Video Game Can Finally Put the Spotlight on the White Walkers
If the White Walkers are still as underdeveloped as they’ve always been, what better way to explore their lore than in a long-form project? A video game set in the Age of Heroes could do wonders for Westeros’ worldbuilding. You could play as a brother of the then-blossoming Night’s Watch, or perhaps a minor knight looking to make a name for themselves; you could even play as the legendary Last Hero, who contacted the Children of the Forest after facing hordes of giants, wights, and spiders. We all know the Long Night supposedly lasted an entire generation, providing a unique setting for the story: a world in perpetual darkness. Along the way, you could meet figures from the Age of Heroes’ legends: Bran the Builder, Lan the Clever, Garth Greenhand, Symeon Star-Eyes, and Durran Godsgrief, to name a few.
While Game of Thrones was always too busy setting up other villains and plot points, a video game centered on the Long Night would finally allow the White Walkers to shine. Since the first Long Night was actually a meaningful event that marked a before-and-after in Westerosi history, we could see these icy beings spreading throughout the continent unopposed; it would be the equivalent of the Season 8 intro, where the animation chronicled the White Walkers’ advance through Westeros. The show stopped them in Winterfell, but a game could see them go further south.
A video game also allows fans the chance to actually fight the White Walkers, which is too badass an idea to pass. Discovering their mysteries and uncovering their weaknesses would make for a brilliant narrative, but actually fighting them would be a long-awaited experience for any fan of the series. After all, seeing Jon (Kit Harington) fighting them during the iconic “Hardhome” episode was a highlight of Game of Thrones. In a game, you would slowly gain experience with every Walker kill, build an army, recruit allies, and eventually fight for Westeros’ salvation during the Battle for the Dawn.
George R. R. Martin Has Made a Name for Himself in the Gaming Space
Perhaps the greatest argument in favor of a Game of Thrones video game is the fact that George R. R. Martin has already entered the video game space with great success. As the creative mind behind the critical and commercial smash Elden Ring, Martin has seen firsthand the many liberties to be found in the realm of video games. The grimdark world of Elden Ring is actually prove that Westeros can translate into the medium perfectly; it’s just a matter of wanting it.
A potential video game set in this time would also have the freedom to create something basically from scratch. Martin himself confessed that the Age of Heroes remains vague in his lore; it was one of the issues Bloodmoon faced and that eventually led to its cancellation. Thus, a video game could take the basics created by Martin and enhance them with a new story and characters, much like Hogwarts Legacy did with the Harry Potter lore. That game took everything we knew about Hogwarts — the common rooms, the classes, the Forbidden Forest, Hogsmeade — and strengthened it, immersing us in the Wizarding World like never before. The same could be done with Westeros and the White Walkers, finally answering one of the biggest questions in A Song of Ice and Fire and redeeming Game of Thrones‘ biggest blunder.

Stargate SG-1 Started A Series-Long Tradition And A Fan Favorite Running Joke
By Jonathan Klotz
| Updated

One thing you’ll notice when you’re (re)watching Stargate SG-1, is that Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) dies a lot. By the time he dies in Episode 12, “Fire and Water,” his death count is up to three (the movie, and “Nox”), which is a little high for a regular human. Then again, he doesn’t really die in “Fire and Water,” so should that even count? Stargate Command gives him a full funeral with military honors so to my mind, it counts as another notch for “Daniel Jackson is Dead.”
Daniel Jackson Is Dead. Again. For The Third Time.

“Fire and Water” opens with SG-1 coming back earlier than expected from their latest mission, looking all sad and dejected as Hammond asks what went wrong, and learns that “Jackson is dead.” Before the opening credits we see the whole military funeral, O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) giving a touching eulogy where he admits that Jackson is the heart of the team. Out of anger, O’Neill, likely a little drunk off of Molson’s, takes out the window of a car with a hockey stick (look quick and you’ll note it says “Anderson” on the stick) and angrily demands they movie it. It’s Hammond’s car, prompting a suddenly much calmer O’Neill to tell his boss that he needs to replace that window.
The SG-1 team slowly realizes that Daniel isn’t dead. Something messed with their minds to make them think he was. Turns out, Daniel’s alive, underwater in the lair of the aquatic merman Nem to help solve the thousand-year old mystery of what happened to his mate, Omoroca. We learn that Omoroca and Nem helped teach the ancient Babylonians until she was murdered by Belus, who of course, was a Goa’uld System Lord. It all goes back to the Goa’uld.
The Math Ain’t Mathing

The merman like Nem is played by Gerard Plunkett, who first appeared on Stargate SG-1 as Councilor Tuplo in “The Broca Divide,” starting the trend of actors playing multiple aliens during the show’s decade-long run. Nem never reappears, nor is he or Omoroca mentioned again, perhaps because someone behind the scenes did the math and realized the pair’s involvement with the ancient Babylonians and also the Goa’uld broke the timeline.
Jackson tells Nem that Omoroca helped inspire the Tau’ri rebellion against the Goa’uld. That took place in 3000 B.C.E. in Egypt, yet Jackson says Nem was on Earth 4,000 years ago working with the Babylonians. That maths out to roughly 2000 B.C.E., or a thousand years after the rebellion. Goa’uld being active on Earth and acting as Gods past that point doesn’t work with the timing of the burial of the Stargate.
“Fire and Water” is another in the long line of episodes that introduces an advanced species with deep ties to the roots of human civilization that we never see again. Get used to it, even Stargate Atlantis does this years later. It’s also not the last time that Jackson is killed in the line of duty. On its own, it’s a bit of an empty episode that alludes to bigger things, though it does get a little credit for Nem’s planet Oannes not looking like the woods of Vancouver for once.

Why Jermaine Dupri Is Suing Sony Music For $18 Million
Hip-hop legend Jermaine Dupri is taking Sony Music Entertainment to court, alleging that the music distributor has withheld millions in royalties from him and his team. Dupri, known for his work with music titans, including Usher, Ludacris, TLC, and Xscape, filed a lawsuit against the company in early July 2026.
Dupri is taking Sony Music Entertainment to court, alleging that the music company has withheld millions from him and his label, So-So Def Recordings, and blasted them in legal filings for their alleged “deceitful actions.”
In the filing, reported by PEOPLE, Dupri said he’s helped produce some of the industry’s biggest songs, which have ultimately brought in over $200 million. However, over the years he and Sony have worked together, Dupri alleged that the company had repeatedly altered documents by underreporting and failing to report royalties.
“[Sony Music Entertainment] intentionally failed to account to Plaintiffs to avoid paying millions of dollars to the Plaintiffs,” the filing reads.
Jermaine Dupri Reworked His Contract With Sony Music Numerous Times Between 1992 And 2006
The legal documents claim that Dupri, who entered into a contract with Sony Music Entertainment in 1992, has reworked his agreement with the company “at least seven times” between ’92 and 2006.
Elsewhere in the filing, it states that the music icon began to believe something unsavory was occurring at the company in 2023 when So-So Def Recordings realized they allegedly hadn’t been paid for “multiple releases” over a “substantial” period of time.
As for the records, Dupri is alleging in the lawsuit that he is owed nearly $1 million for his work on Xscape’s “Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha,” and $2.2 million for two Kris Kross albums.
Overall, Dupri is seeking $18 million in royalties from Sony and has referenced additional works he’s allegedly missing royalties on by artists such as Mariah Carey, Usher, and Bow Wow.
Jermaine Dupri Broke His Silence On Why He Believed Xscape Split

While Dupri has worked with a plethora of stellar artists over the years, fans can never overlook his role in shaping Xscape into one of the most dominant R&B quartets of the early ’90s. Hits like “Who Can I Run To” and “Just Kickin’ It” are just a few of the timeless records that helped cement the group’s legacy.
However, the band split in 2000 before reuniting briefly in 2005. Speaking with Ebony in 2019, Dupri got candid about how he felt some of his work with the group actually led to their demise, stating that the songs he wrote caused friction amongst the ladies.
“They meet Jermaine Dupri, and Jermaine Dupri writes a song and he gives the song to Kandi [Burruss] because Kandi’s voice sounds like mine. It’s no other reason that I gave it to her besides the fact that I wanted her to sing the way I was having T-Boz sing. That created friction from jump,” he said.
While the group has since reunited and performed together, they proved their drama remained when they appeared in the Bravo docuseries “SWV & XSCAPE: The Queens of R&B.”
Dupri Took The Super Bowl Stage With Usher In 2024

In addition to Xscape, Dupri worked with Usher on some of his biggest hits, including “Burn,” “Confessions Part II,” and “My Boo.” So, it only made sense for the music staple to appear alongside him during his 2024 Super Bowl performance.
Dupri opened up about the special occasion while speaking with Entertainment Tonight, saying, “It’s amazing to be up there with your friends and to be up there with people that you basically started.”
According to Dupri, Usher’s first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 was one they completed together, so sharing the stage with the superstar was “definitely, definitely amazing.”
Dupri’s Legacy Continues!

For those who might’ve missed it, Usher’s Super Bowl performance featured Alicia Keys, Ludacris, Lil Jon, and H.E.R. The show also featured Usher and his dancers gliding across the stage in roller skates, something Dupri said paid homage to Atlanta. Dupri described Usher’s performance as “the most electrifying thing I’ve seen on TV” before giving the 47-year-old his props for putting on a brilliant performance.
As the interview was concluding, Dupri reflected on his career, saying his first No. 1 album was with Kris Kross in 1993. Then, he shifted to reflecting on his current work, specifically with Muni Long. “I got the hottest record on the streets right now with Muni Long [“Made for Me”] and it’s the biggest sensation on TikTok, and I just performed at the Super Bowl,” he said.

Netflix’s Biggest Shows Are Officially Losing Viewers, and the Reason Is Painfully Obvious
Netflix is home to some of the most popular shows in streaming history, including its originals like Stranger Things or adaptations of beloved animated series like Avatar: The Last Airbender or One Piece. It’s also notorious for how it treats certain shows, with breakout hits often canceled without warning. Some Netflix subscribers have also expressed their frustration that certain shows get canceled while others seem to continue without any issue (read: Emily in Paris). However, Netflix is now facing another major issue with its shows, and it’s entirely the streamer’s own making.
A new report from Bloomberg shows a stark difference in viewership between the debut season of a Netflix original and its second season. Season 2 of One Piece lost over 30% of its audience, while Season 2 of Beef fell a staggering 70%. Perhaps the biggest indicator that Netflix’s status isn’t what it used to be is Avatar: The Last Airbender, which saw a 60% drop in viewership just a week after its premiere. The problem isn’t quality, as most of these series have received higher ratings in their second seasons than in their debuts. So what’s causing these massive drop-offs in viewership? The answer is simple.
The Delay Between Seasons Is Affecting Netflix’s Viewership Numbers
After Bloomberg’s report dropped, writer/director Matthew A. Cherry laid out a simple truth on Twitter: the years-long gap between seasons is eroding people’s interest in Netflix’s shows. It’s not hard to argue Cherry’s point, as new installments of Netflix originals seem to be taking longer to come out. Both Beef and One Piece premiered in 2023, meaning that it took three years for a new season to drop. While other elements like the SAG-AFTRA/WGA strike of 2023 impact production, Netflix is also relying solely on the faith of its subscribers for viewership, and that faith is starting to wear thin.
Another side effect of the seasonal gap is that audiences’ opinions on certain series begin to shift, and sometimes not for the better. Stranger Things is a great example of this, as the gap between seasons widened, resulting in a re-evaluation of what was once a beloved series. Many felt Stranger Things would have been better served as a miniseries, while others felt that its embrace of ’80s pop culture was stagnating actual pop culture. Other fans felt that the show extending its episodes to feature length didn’t do much for the story, leading to a mixed reception for the series finale, “The Upside Down.” In many ways, this was a harbinger of things to come for Netflix.
Netflix’s Binge Model is Outdated
Netflix has another issue to contend with beyond its lengthy production gaps: its binge model has grown outdated. When it first launched, the idea of watching a single season of television in a day was a great hook. Now, most people are championing longer seasons rather than the 8 episodes Netflix usually allots for its original series. Other streamers like Prime Video and Disney+ have made a habit out of weekly releases and ended up edging Netflix out of the limelight. Cosmopolitan entertainment editor Tamara Fuentes also pointed out in an interview with TheWrap that while other streamers have found a clear identity, Netflix remains hard to pin down.
“Netflix often found its identity via the hit show at the time. It is like they are trying to figure out that formula again — trying to see what the next big thing can be — but they don’t often lean into what they find as success.”
If Netflix wants to reclaim its crown in the Streaming Wars, it needs to switch up both its production strategy and its approach to releasing original television. Netflix is still capable of making hits, as anyone who’s seen KPop Demon Hunters or The Boroughs can confirm. But it’s clear that time is not on its side, and those in charge should embrace change rather than remain on a sinking ship.

Layla Taylor Teases Why She Is ‘Glowing Lately’ After Coming Out
A mystery lady is fully sponsoring Layla Taylor‘s glow!
“The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” star recently came clean about her sexuality and has intensified her confession with a big reveal on just how far she has gone with that part of her life, leaving her with impacts in real time.
“SLOMW” star Layla Taylor became a single woman in the first quarter of the year when she ended her romance with Mason McWhorter in February 2026.

The reality star made some hearts flutter on her social media today when she unveiled her relationship status about four months after she opted out of an old romance. Taylor’s post alluded to the positive attention she has been getting behind her glow lately, sharing who is causing that to happen.
With a bright grin on her face, flashing her pearly whites, complemented by a white tank top and animal-print pants, Taylor finally confirmed she has indeed found love, in the arms of a woman.
The reality star teased her fans with a glimpse of her new partner locking hands, with a heavily tattooed arm peeking into the camera. Although faceless, Taylor’s happy expression gave away exactly how she felt — joyful, uplifted, and absolutely smitten.
She rounded up her TikTok post with a caption which read, “Chivalry isn’t dead, it’s w the lesbians” as SZA’s “Good Days” played over the video.
The Reality Star’s Online Family Endorsed Her New Normal
@laylaleannetaylor Chivalry isn’t dead it’s w the lesbians
Taylor’s comment section instantly got buzzing with positive reactions from her fans, friends, and loved ones who were either guessing who the lucky woman is or expressing their satisfaction towards the development.
“Layla, I love this glow for you, and I am here for your new chapter,” a fan stated, as her co-star, Jennifer Affleck, stressed that her pal looks so happy.
A nosy commenter confessed that they do not mind perching around patiently for someone to unravel the identity of Taylor’s mystery lover with their arm tattoo as a clue.
The television star confirmed how genuinely happy she is in a response to a comment from a fan about their first time seeing a genuine smile from the reality star.
“I absolutely love this for you! Ever since I have been with my girlfriend and decided to date women, I have never been happier!! I wish you nothing but happiness, Layla,” another TikTok user stated.
How Lack Of Queer Representation Delayed Layla Taylor’s Coming Out
While Taylor has always carried a strong romantic attraction to women in her heart for years, she has exclusively dated only men publicly until her breakup from McWhorter, which changed everything.
The Blast had stated that the media personality found the voice to convey her innermost thoughts about her sexuality as she got candid with Jay Shetty on his “On Purpose” podcast.
She recalled that during her relationship, she constantly placed other people’s interests above hers, and she never really got to understand herself as a person. Since the split, Taylor has been able to sit in silence and listen to her thoughts to process her feelings better.
Unfortunately, the timing could have come earlier if she grew up with adequate queer representation around her in her early days who could help her understand certain occurrences. Even when she saw romantic scenes between women on television, she did not find anyone around her to make these things appear normal.
The Influencer Was Once Romantically Involved With Her Ex-Boyfriend’s Brother

Taylor and McWhorter’s relationship first became public knowledge in 2025, and she confirmed the same year that things were steaming hot between them. While the reality star closed scenes on the 3rd and 4th season of “SLOMW,” McWhorter often found herself lurking around the set and even making the cut on screen.
Interestingly, Taylor and her ex-boyfriend are connected in more than one way, as she had briefly dated his brother, Chase, two years before she met her ex. As shared by PEOPLE, McWhorter’s brother was also previously married to Taylor’s “SLOMW” co-star Miranda McWhorter.
The reality star clarified in a previous interview with Swoon that her episode with Chase was very brief and nothing really tangible emerged from it.
McWhorter’s time on “SLOMW” often gave fans a glimpse of his efforts in helping Taylor raise her two sons from her failed marriage to Clayton Wessel better and more firmly.
Inside Layla Taylor’s Split Before Coming Out

The reality TV personality, fresh off her breakup from Mason McWhorter, explained that as the relationship advanced, they realized that they were not compatible anymore.
The Blast noted that the former continued that she realized she and McWhorter were on two different paths, and in order for growth to happen, he had to do it on his own.
She clarified that the split was mutual, amicable, and they respected each other’s decision with no bad blood between them. However, Taylor showed up moments after she made a post about their stress-free breakup, appearing upset over a discovery she made about McWhorter.
Taylor’s reaction caused her social media fans to drop uplifting comments under her post, urging her to keep her eyes on the prize and make peace that something good is around the corner for her.
Her co-stars Mayci Neeley and Jessi Draper all voiced their undying support for the media personality as she dealt with the split blues.
Congratulations, Layla Taylor!

The Real Villain of ‘Supergirl’s’ Box Office Struggles May Be Franchise Expectations
When it comes to superhero films — especially ones that are part of a larger cinematic universe — conversations about casts and plots are usually quickly followed by a very familiar conversation about expectations: Is “superhero fatigue” real? Has the audience moved on from comic books? Will this movie do well enough at the box office to keep the franchise going?
Supergirl, the newest movie in James Gunn‘s fledgling DCU, has inevitably found itself under this exact same microscope. Starring Milly Alcock, featuring Jason Momoa as Lobo and directed by Craig Gillespie, the film — which took inspiration from the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic — had a lot of the ingredients it needed to succeed as an entertaining film. But in a summer full of blockbusters like The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, there was an expectation that Supergirl would be a hit for the studio, on the order of last year’s Superman. Supergirl was expected to validate the DCU long-term strategy of building a larger cohesive ecosystem for all these characters to flourish, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Unfortunately, audiences and critics alike were not all that receptive to Supergirl. The film underperformed at the box office, opening at around $68 million globally against a $180 million budget. And despite near-universal praise for Alcock’s performance as Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl, the film hasn’t connected with fans on the level that DC was hoping for.
But while there has been much speculation about why Supergirl didn’t meet expectations (including a report of creative problems behind the scenes between Gunn and Gillespie), the reality is that those expectations may have been an impossible burden to place on the film to begin with, no matter what the finished product was.
‘Supergirl’ Was Never Going to Be Judged on Quality Alone
Modern superhero movies are no longer evaluated by whether they are entertaining. Instead, they have become progress reports for billion-dollar franchises. Every opening weekend is examined on a molecular level, and viewed as evidence that these franchises are succeeding or failing. In the case of Supergirl, much of the discussion has shifted from the film’s qualities to what the box office means for the future of the DC Universe.
It’s also impossible to discuss Supergirl‘s performance at the box office without acknowledging that, like many female-led blockbusters, discourse expanded well beyond ticket sales, as topics like feminism and “wokeness” inevitably became talking points for those who wished to see the movie fail. Despite this, the film’s failure at the box office was not because it starred a woman, even if some people online wished it was.
None of this discussion focused on whether Supergirl tells a compelling a story. Instead, much of the online conversation is fueled by speculation about franchise momentum, and how much of an impact it will have on the DC Universe. But this was an impossible standard for Supergirl, or any film, to meet. No single film will convince everyone that a cinematic universe will work. For every Avengers: Infinity War, there exists a Thor: The Dark World.
Privileging box office discussions over whether films have memorable performances or strong emotional storytelling is the movie equivalent of evaluating athletes purely by their box scores rather than on-the-field impact.
Have Shared Universes Worn Out Their Welcome?
Supergirl found itself at a very interesting flashpoint in the superhero movie ecosystem. It’s not just DC that is in a precarious position. Even with all the goodwill Marvel built over the years, they are facing an uphill climb when it comes to generating excitement for some of their biggest releases, like the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Regardless of individual strengths or weaknesses, Supergirl wasn’t just a summer blockbuster, it was expected to reassure the fans and silence the doubters. It did not do that; instead, it raised concerns about long-term viability.
For a casual audience, it can be harder to invest the time necessary to fully understand a shared cinematic universe. It was an issue that Marvel struggled with, but eventually found its path to massive success. But most moviegoers are less concerned with overall studio strategy and how faithful movies are to their source material; they simply want to know if they’re spending money to be entertained for around two hours. If this gets lost in discussions of box office numbers and cohesion between movies, even well-made superhero movies will struggle.
Shared universes aren’t going away, and nor should they, because when done in a way that is constructive and entertaining, audiences resonate with them. One only needs to look at the cultural impact that was made by Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel, Avengers: Endgame. However, as with the Avengers films, they only work if the individual movies can stand on their own. If there’s a lesson to be learned from Supergirl‘s disappointing box office, it’s that audiences have grown cautious of investing time in a film that is seen as the next building block of these universes.
While Supergirl struggled, DC and Warner Brothers do not seem to be worried about the future. Supergirl isn’t going to sink anything, and the character is set to be a major player in the DC Universe going forward. Nevertheless, it can serve as an example of what studios need to do differently to ensure their films succeed.
