Hollywood isn’t happy about the new Seedance 2.0 video generator

Hollywood organizations are pushing back against a new AI video model called Seedance 2.0, which they say has quickly become a tool for “blatant” copyright infringement.

ByteDance, the Chinese company that recently finalized a deal to sell TikTok’s U.S. operations (it retains a stake in the new joint venture), launched Seedance 2.0 earlier this week.  According to the Wall Street Journal, the updated model is currently available to Chinese users of ByteDance’s Jianying app, and the company says it will soon be available to global users of its CapCut app.

Similar to tools such as OpenAI’s Sora, Seedance allows users to create videos (currently limited to 15 seconds in length) by just entering a text prompt. And like Sora, Seedance quickly drew criticism for an apparent lack of guardrails around the ability to create videos using the likeness of real people, as well as studios’ intellectual property.

After one X user posted a brief video showing Tom Cruise fighting Brad Pitt, which they said was created by “a 2 line prompt in seedance 2,” “Deadpool” screenwriter Rhett Reese responded, “I hate to say it. It’s likely over for us.”

The Motion Picture Association soon issued a statement from CEO Charles Rivkin demanding that ByteDance “immediately cease its infringing activity.”

“In a single day, the Chinese AI service Seedance 2.0 has engaged in unauthorized use of U.S. copyrighted works on a massive scale,” Rivkin said. “By launching a service that operates without meaningful safeguards against infringement, ByteDance is disregarding well-established copyright law that protects the rights of creators and underpins millions of American jobs.”

The Human Artistry Campaign — an initiative backed by Hollywood unions and trade groups — condemned Seedance 2.0 as “an attack one very creator around the world,” while the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA said it “stands with the studios in condemning the blatant infringement enabled by Bytedance’s new AI video model Seedance 2.0.”

Seedance videos have apparently featured Disney-owned characters such as Spider-Man, Darth Vader, and Grogu, better known as Baby Yoda, prompting the company to take legal action. Axios reports that Disney has sent a cease-and-desist letter accusing ByteDance of a “virtual smash-and-grab of Disney’s IP”and claiming the Chinese company is “hijacking Disney’s characters by reproducing, distributing, and creating derivative works featuring those characters.”

Disney isn’t necessarily opposed to working with AI companies — while it has reportedly sent a cease-and-desist letter to Google over similar issues, it’s signed a three-year licensing deal with OpenAI.

TechCrunch has reached out to ByteDance for comment.

Rightmove has launched a beta version of AI‑powered conversational property search in the UK. Built with Google’s Gemini models, the tool lets users describe what they want in plain language and receive tailored property results.

The feature appears directly in the homepage search bar. Clicking “Use AI” opens a chat window where home‑movers can refine searches in their own words.

Beyond standard filters like location, bedrooms, and price, the AI can surprisingly handle more complex requests. Examples include finding homes with solar panels, cottages with sea views, or properties within a 30‑minute commute that also have access to green spaces.

However, results only come from Rightmove’s live listings and data assets. The AI assistant generates shortlists that match criteria, complementing the platform’s traditional search tools.

Needless to say, it would have been great if there were an independent AI platform that presented data from all other live listing hosting sites and gathered them into one big result for users to assess.

Going back, the feature is currently only available to a limited portion of Rightmove’s audience, following the company’s usual rollout process.

This launch builds on earlier AI features. In 2025, Rightmove introduced “AI Keywords” on mobile apps, which scans listing text and images for specific prompts like “river view” or “underfloor heating.” The company has also recently added “Style with AI,” a tool that lets buyers visualise properties by removing furniture, adjusting lighting, or applying design styles such as Scandi or Art Deco.

Rightmove says the new conversational search reflects growing demand for description‑based queries. With over one billion minutes spent on the platform monthly, the company is leveraging its large audience and data sets to refine AI tools. Tarah Lourens, Chief Technology and Operations Officer, described the launch as a way to “genuinely add value for people moving home and for partners.”

The tool will undoubtedly evolve based on user interaction. Rightmove plans to expand functionality over time, using agentic development techniques to accelerate progress. While it’s still confined to one company, this beta marks the next step in building an AI‑powered property marketplace.

Chinese New Year 2026 brought the Year of the Fire Horse, the ideal opportunity for Beijing-based Robotera to showcase their humanoid L7 robot in a full-fledged sword dance routine. Robotera engineers have been working with Tsinghua University on the L7 since its debut in mid-2025, and they’ve programmed it to capture the spirit of legendary swordplay, drawing heavily from the fictional Dugu Nine Swords style, which Chinese outlets have nicknamed the robot after wuxia hero Linghu Chong.



The L7 is a 171 cm tall, 65 kg robot with a lightweight build constructed of titanium and carbon fiber, complete with tons of flexibility. The developers at Robotera have given it 55 degrees of freedom over its body, with each arm having 7 and the hands having a full 12 degrees of freedom between them, allowing for some really delicate control. With that configuration, the robot can swing a sword without flinching, even when swiftly changing direction.

The robot begins by standing still in a courtyard, sword firmly in hand, before swaying into action when the music plays some traditional beats. The L7 then takes a stride forward, its wrist flipping furiously as the blade slices through the air in neat arcs, followed by thrusting, quick, direct motions that come to a halt at full extension. Before you know it, the monster is leaping into the air, flipping its legs, and swinging the sword overhead in precise arcs. Twirls follow, and you have to give credit to the engineers; the robot moves like a pro, with no signs of its limbs becoming caught in the blade or anything.

Through it all, the item remains perfectly balanced. When it rotates around, its feet plant and pivot with deadly precision. High-speed slashes are combined up with slower, more careful strokes, demonstrating its variety of motion. The blade whips down to the ground one minute, then slashing up high in a superb overhead cut. Jumps land cleanly, with no wobbles or stumbles, as it accelerates and increases until it comes to a rest with the sword extended.

This type of agility was also demonstrated in previous demos in which the L7 attempted breakdancing and 360-degree spin jumps, but sword work necessitates even tighter coordination, as the thing must match the swing of the sword to the beat of the music while keeping its entire body stable. It does it so seamlessly that the hands can alter their hold in mid-motion, with no slippage.


The L7 is intended for real-world application, not as showpieces. It can reach speeds of up to 4 m/s and can even handle logistics or service roles thanks to its built-in AI, but these festive displays demonstrate just how far we’ve come with embodied control, as every leap and swing of the sword demonstrates that the hardware and software can replicate fluid human motion in some pretty demanding sequences.

IBM to triple entry-level US hiring, with roles reimagined for AI era

The company has announced that the expansion of roles will be across the board, impacting a wide range of departments.

As reported by Bloomberg, IBM has announced plans to triple its entry-level hiring in the US, despite the wider impact of AI on the availability of early-stage opportunities. 

Nickle LaMoreaux, IBM’s chief human resources officer, spoke at a conference this week (13 February) in New York, confirming that the jobs will be in areas where AI could be used instead. She stated entry-level job descriptions for software developers and other roles were adapted to make the case internally for the recruitment push.

Speaking at Charter’s Leading with AI Summit, LaMoreaux explained: “The entry-level jobs that you had two to three years ago, AI can do most of them. So, if you’re going to convince your business leaders that you need to make this investment, then you need to be able to show the real value these individuals can bring now. And that has to be through totally different jobs.”

As a result, an early-career starter at IBM will find themselves in an altered role, focusing less on routine tasks. For example, because AI can handle standard coding challenges, IBM’s junior software developers are now spending less time coding and more time working with customers. 

In the HR department, entry-level staffers spend time intervening when HR chatbots fall short, correcting output and communicating with managers as needed.

IBM did not specify how many people it would be hiring as part of the initiative; however, the organisation did say that expansion will be across the board, affecting a wide range of departments.  

IBM’s news comes at a time when there is growing concern that AI and other advanced technologies could result in limited career opportunities for future graduates and early-career starters.

Amazon recently announced it intends to cut 16,000 roles across its departments internationally, as a means of strengthening its organisation by “reducing layers, increasing ownership and removing bureaucracy”. In 2025 alone, Amazon spent nearly $100bn on AI.
