Gattuso avoids future talk after Italy miss out FIFA World Cup again | Football News

Published

on

Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso said it is not the time to talk about his future despite the Azzurri failing to qualify for a third straight World Cup.

Even if Gattuso hasn’t made up his mind whether to stay or not, the Italian soccer federation gave a clear sign it would like him to remain on Tuesday.

Four-time World Cup winner Italy lost a penalty shootout at 66th-ranked Bosnia and Herzegovina in the European playoffs on Tuesday, after playing most of the match with 10 men.

“I’m not interested at all in talking about my future today,” Gattuso said. “It hurts, it really hurts. More than hurting me, it hurts to see this group which has really given everything in these months and I think we deserved to get back what we put in and I honestly think it’s too reductive and too immature to be talking about my future today.

“Here we should be talking about Italy, about the national team shirt, that it’s yet another blow even though this time we didn’t deserve it. We deserved more and that’s why my future doesn’t matter.”
Italy was eliminated by Sweden and North Macedonia, respectively, in the qualifying playoffs for the last two World Cups.

Gattuso was hired last June to replace the fired Luciano Spalletti, with Italy’s World Cup qualifying hopes already flagging again.

He was given a contract until the end of this summer’s World Cup, with an automatic renewal until 2028 if Italy reached the tournament in North America.

“I have to praise Gattuso. I think he’s been a great coach, he is a great coach, I’ve asked him to stay on in charge of these players,” Italian soccer federation president Gabriele Gravina said.

However, whether Gravina himself should remain is also up for debate and he said he has already called for a federation council meeting next week to evaluate matters.

Gravina has overseen two sets of disappointing World Cup qualifiers after taking charge in 2018. He replaced Carlo Tavecchio, who quit after Italy failed to reach the 2018 World Cup.

There had already been calls for Gravina’s resignation but some fans see the problem as running even deeper.

“I feel really bad, the system is rotten, the football system in Italy is rotten. Like, it’s not possible. A country which is made for football and lives for football and now, like, everything is rotten,” said 30-year-old Federico Barbieri, outside a bar in Rome.

“We knew that the team has its limits but … not going to the World Cup three times in a row? Sweden, North Macedonia and Bosnia. What else can I say?”
Not every Italy coach has paid for the Azzurri’s failure to reach the World Cup.

Gian Piero Ventura was fired after Italy lost to Sweden but his replacement, Roberto Mancini, kept his job despite Italy’s shock loss to North Macedonia in 2022.

That came just eight months after Mancini led the team to the European Championship title and the federation decided to stick with the coach who revitalized the national team.

Mancini surprisingly resigned just over a year later – going on to become Saudi Arabia coach two weeks later – and was replaced by Spalletti.

But Spalletti, who oversaw a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign, got just one World Cup qualifier in charge before he was fired, with Gattuso coming in.

Tuesday’s defeat added more misery for Italy’s once-proud national team, which won the World Cup four times.

“I grew up with an Italy that always came in the top four at the World Cup,” said 56-year-old building contractor Roberto Silvi. “I’ve seen Italy as world champion twice, and close another couple times.

“I took Italy’s qualifications for granted and now it seems like a nightmare to me. I don’t even believe it. The Italy that misses a World Cup is outside of the world. The Italy that misses three, if they had told me, I never would have believed it.

Marc Cucerella’s barber and the ‘leaked’ Chelsea team news

Published

on

When the Chelsea team was announced as kick-off approached before Tuesday’s game at Brighton, the news may not have been a surprise to some.

Screenshots of a post on social media platform X had been doing the rounds for hours, stating midfielder Cole Palmer and striker Joao Pedro would both be missing from the line-up. They were indeed absent.

It was claimed the post came from Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella’s barber.

“[Cole] Palmer and Joao Pedro both injured tonight,” it read. “There’s your exclusive.” There was also an image of the back of Cucurella’s distinctive curly hair.

In Palmer’s case, there was no public knowledge of his hamstring injury, while Joao Pedro had undergone a fitness test on the morning of the match.

Rosenior is known to keep his cards close to his chest when it comes to team selection and is said by those who know him to deliberately hold pre-match news conferences two days in advance in order to keep opposing managers guessing.

The post, which appeared to tag several accounts known for providing Fantasy Premier League advice, has been deleted, along with the entire account on which it appeared.

Having been deleted, it cannot be independently verified but the club has not denied its authenticity when asked about the post.

BBC Sport has also contacted the barber and Cucurella’s representatives for comment.

It would be the third instance in which team news has reportedly been leaked from Chelsea since Liam Rosenior’s appointment in early January.

Team news got out around both legs of Chelsea‘s Champions League tie with Paris St‑Germain. Rosenior said they had been “dealt with” and that they had “not come from any place of malicious intent towards me or the team”.

Chelsea are currently seventh in the Premier League table with four league matches left to play. They next play in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds at Wembley Stadium.

Major AEW Deal Officially Comes To An End

Published

on

After years of supporting the promotion, it has just been revealed that a major AEW deal is set to come to an end soon. Although this has been hinted at for some time now, an official press release has now been made.

Triller TV is a streaming service dedicated to combat sports. This has featured mixed martial arts (MMA), boxing, and wrestling. In the case of wrestling shows, this has featured not only weekly television of major promotions, but pay-per-views as well. They have been the international partner of the Jacksonville-based promotion for some time now.

Last month, many noticed that the platform was no longer accepting new subscribers for their AEW Plus subscription. With the launch of MYAEW, it seems that this partnership is set to come to an end. In an email sent to subscribers, Triller TV confirmed that they will no longer carry events by All Elite Wrestling and Ring of Honor moving forward.

The subscriptions will end at the next billing date, but pay-per-views that fans previously purchased will still be available to replay.

“We’re writing to let you know that AEW Plus is being discontinued. AEW and ROH PPVs are also no longer available for purchase on TrillerTV. If you have an active AEW Plus subscription, it will end on your next billing date. You’ll have full access until that date. If you have an active AEW Plus subscription, it will end on your next billing date. You’ll have full access until that date.”

Where can fans watch AEW?

For fans in the United States, there are two ways to watch Dynamite and Collision. These are broadcast live on TBS and on HBO Max. In the case of pay-per-views, there are several platforms available for those in America, such as HBO Max, Amazon Prime, PPV.com, DAZN, and many others. For those in Canada and Mexico, the weekly shows can be viewed on TSN and Fox Sports, respectively.

MYAEW is now the main streaming platform for international fans as they can catch both the promotion’s weekly shows and pay-per-views. There are several plans fans can choose from if they wish to only watch Dynamite and Collision, or have the pay-per-views as part of their subscription. ROH shows can also be viewed on the platform.
