MLB trade deadline: Grading every team’s moves, from Dodgers’ and Nationals’ A to Yankees’ and Orioles’ D

Published

on

The 2026 trade deadline came and went Monday evening and dozens of trades were made in the days leading up to the deadline. The biggest trade was, of course, the two-time defending World Series champion Dodgers adding two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal. Now that all the deadline activity is in the books, let’s hand out some grades. Come with me, won’t you?

Arizona Diamondbacks: D

Lars Nootbaar is a perfectly adequate get, but that was it? Did they really not want to address the rotation? I suppose the return of Michael Soroka will help, while Merrill Kelly and Brandon Pfaadt have been going well behind All-Star Eduardo Rodriguez of late, but it sure seems like they could’ve used an upgrade. — Matt Snyder

(Sacramento) Athletics: D

Granted that losing Shea Langeliers to a torn meniscus took their best trade candidate off the table (and made Jonah Heim a necessity, rather than a luxury, for the rest of the season), the Athletics virtually did nothing at the deadline. Twelve games under .500, fourth place in the division, and your answer is…nothing? That can’t be a plan. — Matt Snyder

Atlanta Braves: C

There was talk about Tarik Skubal and Taylor Ward and instead, the Braves settled for Tyler Mahle and Lane Thomas. They also brought in Brent Suter for middle relief work. The Braves needed offensive help and rotation depth and yeah, they got it, but not in a way that really moved the needle. It was a fine trade deadline at a time when Atlanta had a chance to do more than fine. — Mike Axisa

Baltimore Orioles: D

To be sure, the Orioles secured a massive prospect haul for Adley Rutschman, and they added nice organizational depth in the Taylor Ward and Tyler Wells deals. The O’s went into deadline day only two games behind the third wild-card spot in the loss column, though. They gave Pete Alonso all that money over the winter just so they could throw in the towel and sell because they were two out with two months to play? The individual trades were good to great. There just seems to be zero urgency to, you know, win in Baltimore. — Mike Axisa

Boston Red Sox: A

Yes, they paid a handsome price for Adley Rutschman, but he’s a significant upgrade at the game’s most demanding position this year and next. If you’re going to pay top dollar, you pay it for a switch-hitter catcher with good offense and great defensive chops. I also liked getting lefty reliever Erik Miller, even if it meant turning the page on perpetual prospect Marcelo Mayer. The Curtis Mead trade has quickly become an afterthought because he im-mead-iately got hurt, though that was just bad luck. I like that move too. Great work by the Red Sox landing Rutschman and getting the upgrades they did. — Mike Axisa

Chicago Cubs: A

The Cubs needed to address their battered rotation, and they did that. Leading up to the deadline, the North Siders added to their starting pitcher mix Clay Holmes from the Mets, the still-effective and durable Kevin Gausman from the Blue Jays, and Braxton Garrett from the Marlins. The price was steep in the Garrett swap, but overall, the Cubs did what they needed to do and then some. Holmes in particular will be an excellent fit in front of the Cubs’ sterling infield defense. — Dayn Perry

Chicago White Sox: B

The biggest move was adding Luis Castillo to the rotation, although he looks to be potentially in decline these days. The Sox also fortified the bullpen and the bench as they attempt to remain on top in the AL Central. The move that helped them the most in terms of their division title hopes may be one they had nothing to do with: the Tigers dealing away Tarik Skubal. — Dayn Perry

Cincinnati Reds: C-

There’s really not much to go on, and there being not much to go on informs that low grade above. The Reds added, most notably, a low-minors right-hander for Nathaniel Lowe and an additional $250,000 in international bonus pool money in exchange for a relief arm. Those moves are fine in and of themselves, but a team in the Reds’ position needs to be more resolute in what direction they take at the deadline. — Dayn Perry

Cleveland Guardians: B+

The Guards had a high level of activity by the standards of a team owned by the Dolan family. They added a couple of useful bats with Nathaniel Lowe and Jo Adell. As well, repatriated right-hander Foster Griffin helps solidify the rotation after remaking himself in Japan and proving himself with the Nationals, although the cost in trade was high. — Dayn Perry

Colorado Rockies: B-

The Rockies did some light selling by moving relievers Victor Vodnik and Antonio Senzatela and center fielder Brenton Doyle. Instead of moving Mickey Moniak, they’re extending him, and they never seriously seemed to consider trading All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman. Those latter two maybe could’ve landed some good prospects (Goodman definitely would have) but instead the Rockies decided to provide their fans with a little hope and continuity. That’s not necessarily the worst thing in the world. — Matt Snyder

Detroit Tigers: F

This is the easiest call of all. By trading away back-to-back Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize – their second-best starter this season – the Tigers undertook a teardown despite being within close range of playoff position and having the second-best run differential in the American League. That’s a disservice to their fans and to any notions of competitive integrity. We have plenty of examples of flawed teams that sneaked into the postseason and made a deep run. The Tigers still might do that, given how close they are, but lead decision-maker Scott Harris was derelict in his most basic duties leading up to the deadline. The returns he got in those trades hardly matter. — Dayn Perry

Houston Astros: C

I guess they’re content with the rotation? I like the addition of Daulton Varsho, as he’ll greatly improve that defense and has good power potential, but they were awfully quiet for a team that just surged into first place in a bad division. — Matt Snyder

Kansas City Royals: C

The Royals made multiple moves, but none of them was of the headline-grabbing variety. They fortified the farm system in deals with the Braves and Dodgers, most notably, but the prospects they received leading up to the deadline may wind up being just depth additions. Given the limited supply of alluring vets in KC, the decision not to trade Michael Wacha and Seth Lugo is a bit puzzling. — Dayn Perry

Los Angeles Angels: C

They traded seven MLB players and made them into nine prospects. It’ll take years to figure out if the moves were a net positive, but we already know that selling teams rarely turn firesales into a litany of great players. And now poor Mike Trout is around for a rebuild. — Matt Snyder

Los Angeles Dodgers: A+

They did other stuff, of course, but the move of the deadline was getting the best pitcher in baseball in Tarik Skubal. In and of itself, in light of the Dodgers rotation injuries, it was a great move to add to the team, but keeping him away from every other contending team is just as important. — Matt Snyder

Miami Marlins: B

They shuffled relievers (Lake Bachar out, Victor Vodnik in), turned the oft-injured Braxton Garrett into two prospects, and did nice work cashing in catcher Liam Hicks. One-and-a-half productive years and then a trade for prospects makes Hicks one of the most successful Rule 5 Draft picks of the last decade. There was room to add a starter, even just for innings. Otherwise, it was a solid if unspectacular deadline for the Fish. — Mike Axisa

Milwaukee Brewers: B+

Yes, they missed out on Skubal, but Dustin May‘s strong underlying numbers, increased velocity, and expanded repertoire suggest he can be a canny addition down the stretch. The additions of JoJo Romero and Antonio Senzatela also lengthen the bullpen. There was some cost to the trade with the Cardinals, but the Brewers improved their chances of hoisting the trophy with these moves. — Dayn Perry

Minnesota Twins: B

The Twins were active on the buy side, which is notable for a team that just a year ago was so active on the sell side. The biggest thing Minny needed to do in order to improve its playoff odds was to address the bullpen, and the front office did that. A.J. Minter, Jeff Hoffmann, and Tommy Nance are new to the relief corps, and they should help matters. They also added Dean Kremer to the rotation. — Dayn Perry

New York Mets: B

It was not the deadline the Mets wanted. They wanted to buy, not sell, but circumstances forced them to sell, and they really leaned into a seller’s market. They turned Clay Holmes, Freddy Peralta, Luke Weaver, and others into 11 prospects — 11! —  includes a few who now rank among the system’s best. The Mets sold just about everyone they could sell and, by all accounts, did well with the prospect haul. Consider this an A that got knocked down to a B given the circumstances (being so bad and disappointing they had to sell in the first place). — Mike Axisa

New York Yankees: D

The Yankees had three needs going into the deadline: righty-hitting catcher, righty-hitting outfielder, late-inning reliever. They went 1 for 3, only bringing in Heliot Ramos as the righty-hitting outfielder. The Yankees couldn’t upgrade over the inadequate Austin Wells/Ali Sánchez catching tandem, nor could they add bodies to help an overworked bullpen. Luis García Jr., while a good addition who will boost the team’s woeful offense, only exacerbates their overly left-handed problem. Just not a good deadline for the Yankees. The roster was aching for more. — Mike Axisa

Philadelphia Phillies: C

Luis Arraez adds a sorely needed contact element to an offense with baseball’s seventh-highest strikeout rate. It will cause some positional headaches — Arraez to second, Bryson Stott to third, Alec Bohm to first, and Bryce Harper to right might downgrade the defense at four positions — but the bat is a great add. Brooks Raley will help the bullpen as well. The Phillies didn’t get a new fifth starter, though, nor did they bring in a righty bat to elevate an offense that has gotten baseball’s lowest OPS from right-handed hitters. — Mike Axisa

Pittsburgh Pirates: B+

Mission No. 1 was improving the bullpen, and Ben Cherington definitely did that leading up to the deadline. The Luke Weaver addition is made to order for the Pirates‘ needs in terms of high-leverage options, and there’s now also much-needed depth with the additions of Camilo Doval, Ron Marinaccio, Kirby Yates, and Luke Bachar. Did Pittsburgh need a bat in light of the injury to Ryan O’Hearn? That’s all that’s keeping them an A. — Dayn Perry

St. Louis Cardinals: B+

Maybe you slightly ding the Cardinals for selling core contributors while within reasonable range of contention, but this was always the plan under first-year lead executive Chaim Bloom. They did exceptionally well with their return in the trade that sent Dustin May and JoJo Romero to the Brewers, and in the deal that sent Lars Nootbaar to Arizona, they got a pair of strikeout arms who could be in St. Louis sooner rather than later.  — Dayn Perry

San Diego Padres: A

Look, A.J. Preller is so over-leveraged here with long-term contracts that aren’t tradeable that he has no other option than to just keep pushing to try and catch lightning in a bottle one of these Octobers. Getting Casey Mize and Robbie Ray for that rotation alongside Michael King and in front of that bullpen was huge. They’ll grab that third wild card and, if the offensive personnel wakes up, they could put a major scare into whichever division winner doesn’t earn a bye. — Matt Snyder

San Francisco Giants: B

They did some selling and did a great job to grab Marcelo Mayer and his upside from the Red Sox. We’ll find out in a few years if the sell job yielded multiple productive players or not, but Mayer has enough upside to get a positive grade. — Matt Snyder

Seattle Mariners: C

They added Taylor Ward and his on-base chops from this season could be a nice boost for the offense. Or maybe he’ll revert to the power hitter who doesn’t walk quite as much? Regardless, that was a decent move for the Mariners, who didn’t do much else other than shed Luis Castillo. They appear to mostly be counting on in-house improvement and it’s not a terrible bet. It was just an underwhelming deadline for a very disappointing team. — Matt Snyder

Tampa Bay Rays: B

The rumors started with Tarik Skubal and Hunter Goodman and the deadline instead brought Liam Hicks, Tyler Wells, and Freddy Peralta. I can’t help but wonder if Wells will be Tampa’s next reliever-to-starter conversion next year. For now, he’s in the late-inning bullpen mix. The Rays did good work patching holes. Hicks, if he sticks around for a few years and performs like he did with the Marlins, might go down as the best catcher in franchise history. (Seriously, it’s been bleak for the Rays behind the plate.) — Mike Axisa

Texas Rangers: D

The Rangers made a minor trade and … that was it. I’m giving the bad grade for two reasons. First off, they’re only a game and a half out of a playoff spot and were in first place just a few weeks ago. And they didn’t aggressively look to improve the ballclub. That’s the first strike against them. Secondly, both Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi reportedly exercised their no-trade clauses. That means the Rangers tried to sell. When 1 ½ games out of a playoff spot. They won the World Series from a wild card just three years ago. This is shameful. — Matt Snyder

Toronto Blue Jays: B

The Blue Jays toed the line nicely between buying (Spencer Arrighetti, José Soriano) and selling (Kevin Gausman, Jeff Hoffman, Daulton Varsho). They could have moved out more players, namely Shane Bieber, but Toronto did very good work bringing in major leaguers to help them contend next year, as well as prospects for the future. I can’t go all the way to an A because I don’t love Arrighetti and the Blue Jays did keep a few potential trade chips, but a B is a pretty good grade too. — Mike Axisa

Washington Nationals: A

Luis García Jr., Foster Griffin, and Curtis Mead were all found money. Foster was a low-cost free-agent signing coming back from Japan, Mead was acquired in a very minor trade at the end of spring training, and García was an afterthought. The Nationals’ new front office helped all three players become the best versions of themselves, then they traded them for seven prospects and two major leaguers (Jake Bird and Connelly Early). Also, they didn’t trade CJ Abrams. Keeping him is a good move in this expert’s opinion. Grade A work for the Nationals at the deadline. — Mike Axisa

Best bets for Dodgers-Cubs, Pirates-Brewers, more on Tuesday, Aug. 4

Published

on

The first two times the Los Angeles Dodgers lost four consecutive games this season, they were able to avoid a fifth straight defeat. On this occasion, they’re hoping the newest member of their starting rotation can help prevent their longest skid of 2026.

Tarik Skubal makes his Dodgers debut when Los Angeles (69-44) visits the Chicago Cubs (64-49) at 8:05 p.m. ET on Tuesday for the middle contest of their three-game series at Wrigley Field. The two-time reigning AL Cy Young Award winner takes the mound for the first time since being acquired from the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

The 29-year-old Skubal, who is set to become a free agent at season’s end, won four of his last five decisions with Detroit and allowed three runs or fewer in each of his past six starts. Los Angeles is looking for another strong performance from the left-hander after suffering its fourth loss in a row, a 10-5 setback in Monday’s series opener.

Despite their current slide, the two-time reigning world champions Dodgers own a nine-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West. Chicago, which has alternated wins and losses over its last seven contests, trails the first-place Milwaukee Brewers by 5.5 games in the NL Central but has a four-game lead for the top wild card berth.

The Cubs trailed 3-0 before their first at-bat on Monday but scored twice in each of the first three innings to take a lead they would not surrender. Michael Bush and Carson Kelly both homered and drove in three runs while Kevin Alcantara and Seiya Suzuki also went deep for Chicago, which bolstered its pitching staff before the trade deadline earlier in the day with the additions of Kevin Gausman, Clay Holmes, Braxton Garrett and reliever Ryan Zeferjahn.

Tuesday’s MLB schedule features 14 other games, including a matchup between the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates (57-57) and major league-best Brewers (69-43) at 7:40 p.m. ET at American Family Field. The Pirates, who are 3.5 games back in the NL wild card race, built a four-run lead and held on for a 4-3 triumph in the opener of the four-game set.

Make your MLB picks at BetMGM Sportsbook and get up to $1,500 in bonus bets if your first bet loses:

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Angels (43-69) and Baltimore Orioles (54-58) begin their three-game series at 6:35 p.m. ET at Camden Yards. The major league-worst Angels ended their five-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory over Milwaukee on Sunday, while the Orioles were outscored 13-0 in back-to-back setbacks against the Philadelphia Phillies over the weekend but are just 2.5 games out of the third and final wild card spot in the AL.

A pair of hot NL East clubs square off Tuesday as the division-leading Atlanta Braves (67-45) host the Miami Marlins (58-55) at 7:15 p.m. ET for the opener of their three-game series at Truist Park. Atlanta has recorded five consecutive victories and Miami has won three straight and six of seven after enduring a franchise-record 12-game losing streak.

The Dodgers are massive -214 favorites against the Cubs in the latest consensus MLB betting odds, while the Brewers are -142 favorites against the Pirates. The Orioles are -151 favorites over the Angels at sports betting apps and the Braves are -144 favorites against the Marlins.

Below is a snapshot of what to watch and bet for Tuesday, Aug. 4. All times Eastern

MLB best bets, where to watch

Angels at Orioles

SportsLine picks —  Model: Angels +1.5 (-162) | Expert: Grayson Rodriguez Under 16.5 outs recorded (-115, PropBetGuy)

Scoring has been an issue for the Orioles lately, as they were shut out in each of their last two games. They collected a total of seven hits in those contests, albeit one was a rain-shortened loss in which they only had five innings of at-bats. In addition, two of their last four victories were one-run decisions. The Angels are coming off a shutout win against the Brewers, and the SportsLine Projection Model believes they’ll at least keep the score close Tuesday as they cover the run line in 65% of its simulations. Los Angeles right-hander Grayson Rodriguez has worked more than 5 1/3 innings in just one of his 10 starts this season. SportsLine props expert PropBetGuy (66-41, +1512 on his last 107 MLB player prop picks) doesn’t feel he’ll accomplish the feat in his first turn against his former team.

Marlins at Braves

Time: 7:15 p.m. | Location: Atlanta | TV: MLB.TV | Stream: Fubo (Try for free)

SportsLine picks —  Model: Marlins +1.5 (-169) | Expert: Braves ML (-149, Matt Severance)

The Braves have won six straight and eight of nine at home but four of the last seven victories were by just one run. The Marlins have scored at least five runs in four of their last seven contests and given up fewer than three in each of their past three. The SportsLine Projection Model doesn’t see a blowout win by Atlanta as its simulations have Miami covering the run line 63% of the time. SportsLine expert Matt Severance (152-86-2, +1685 on his last 240 MLB picks) is backing the Braves to extend their winning streak to six games as Marlins starter Ryan Gusto has posted a 6.23 ERA on the road this season.

Pirates at Brewers

Time: 7:40 p.m. | Location: Milwaukee | TV: MLB.TV | Stream: Fubo (Try for free)

SportsLine picks —  Model: Over 7.5 (-107) | Expert: Logan Henderson Over 6.5 strikeouts (+110, PropBetGuy)

The Pirates and Brewers have combined for eight or more runs in only three of their first seven encounters this season. The NL Central rivals produced a total of seven runs in the opener of this four-game series, but the SportsLine Projection Model thinks they’ll rack up at least eight on Tuesday as the Over hits in 73% of its simulations. Milwaukee’s Logan Henderson has recorded seven or more strikeouts in five of his last eight starts and eight of his 14 career turns in the majors. PropBetGuy likes him to do so against the Pirates, who have the fifth-highest strikeout rate against right-handers this year.

Dodgers at Cubs

Time: 8:05 p.m. | Location: Chicago | TV: TBS | Stream: Fubo (Try for free)

SportsLine pick —  Model: Cubs ML (+183)

After hitting just one home run in their three-game series against the New York Yankees this past weekend, the Cubs belted four over the first five innings of Monday’s series opener. Skubal, who is making his first career start at Wrigley Field in his Dodgers debut, has served up 10 blasts in his first 16 turns this year after allowing 18 in 31 outings last season. He permitted four runs in two of his three career starts against the Cubs. The Dodgers have allowed at least eight runs three times during their current four-game slide, and the SportsLine Projection Model thinks the Cubs will hand them their season-high fifth consecutive defeat as its simulations have them winning 53% of the time.

Ryan Garcia sums up Keyshawn Davis’ decision to pull out of Devin Haney world title fight

Published

on

Keyshawn Davis pulled out of an in-demand showdown with WBO welterweight champion Devin Haney last week, and now Haney’s most fierce rival and fellow welterweight ruler Ryan Garcia has offered his thoughts on that decision to withdraw from the bout.

Davis was vocal about his ambition to face Haney when named as the Californian’s mandatory challenger and it seemed as though the fight was all but confirmed when the bout went to purse bids, as Top Rank won the rights to promote the event.

However, it was then revealed that Davis, who was set to earn around $2 million for the contest, had made the decision to withdraw due to the belief that he was being underpaid.

Speaking to FightHype, Garcia admitted that he was ‘disappointed’ upon hearing the news and labelled Davis as a ‘big talker.’

“I was disappointed in that. I mean, I think that is a clear chance to have one of those wins that sets you up for big, huge paydays. The two-million or whatever he got offered was already more than he has ever made before, so what exactly are you looking for? For you to be overpaid?

“I think that everybody has to go through certain fights and key moments to get them to the top. I think that he wants to go a different route, I think that he possibly started realising that he might have bitten off more than he can chew for that price range.

“I don’t think that, for him, it made sense but it just shows you that a lot of people are big talkers – they don’t really want to do it, when it comes down to it.”

Haney is now being mentioned for a potential unification with newly-crowned IBF world titleholder Liam Paro, which could see Haney fight on Australian soil for a third occasion, four years on from his two victories over George Kambosos Jr. in Melbourne.

Christian Darrisaw’s Big Claim Would Be A Huge Boost for Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings are back to work, with training camp well underway, and one of the best sights so far is a happy and healthy Christian Darrisaw getting to work without any limitations.

Christian Darrisaw’s Big Claim Would Be A Huge Boost For Vikings

Darrisaw missed the start of last season due to still being on the road to recovery from a knee injury that occurred during the 2024 season. When he returned he didn’t look right and wasn’t the dominant tackle we had been used to seeing on the left side of the Vikings’ offensive line. His knee was visibly still a problem, with stiffness leading him to sit out practices, and at times going through pre-game fitness checks to see if he could play.

Eventually, he ended up back on injured reserve to finish the season. It was a bitterly disappointing end to the year for both Darrisaw and the team, as Darrisaw had proved himself to be one of the best tackles in the game before this knee injury stopped him in his tracks.

Health has been an issue for Darrisaw ever since the Vikings drafted him with the 23rd overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. Fully healthy and at his best, Darrisaw has shown that he is right up there with the likes of Penei Sewell and Tristan Wirfs. However, injuries have been a regular occurrence that have held him back. He only played in 10 games last season, but even more concerning was that he only played in 100% of snaps in half of those. The offensive line is not an area where players rotate in and out through choice.

Asked if he expects to play every snap going into the start of this season, Christian Darrisaw said: “100%. That’s the goal. Just go out there and dominate.” That is welcome news for Minnesota as whoever winds up being the Vikings quarterback will greatly benefit from a fully healthy Christian Darrisaw protecting the blindside. Speaking to the media during training camp Darrisaw has claimed he “feels the best I’ve felt in two years,” and that he is “just feeling like myself”. Great news for anyone associated with Vikings football

A Healthy Christian Darrisaw Can Be the Catalyst For a Dominant OL

Minnesota invested heavily in their interior offensive line last year since a poor performance was a big reason they were dumped out of the playoffs in 2024. Will Fries was signed to a huge contract and Donovan Jackson was drafted in the first round to give the Vikings two new guards. Ryan Kelly was added to give the team a solid veteran presence at center. Adding that trio to a very good pair of tackles in Darrisaw and Brian O’Neill was supposed to solve the Vikings’ problems.

That’s not what happened.

Kelly had recurring concussions that led to his retirement, Jackson had some early injury trouble but overall a solid rookie campaign. Fries struggled to live up to his price tag – though he was the only lineman who managed to stay healthy for all 17 games. We have touched on Darrisaw’s issues and O’Neill had knee and heel injuries that caused him to miss three games and he had to play through the pain in others. A fully healthy Darrisaw helps his teammates. He can be left one-on-one with any edge rusher, leaving help for extra help at other points of the line.

Minnesota recently extended Brian O’Neill’s contract ensuring the Vikings duo will stay together for the next few seasons.

A big key will be getting the play on the interior somewhere near the standard the Vikings have on the edge. Development from Jackson and Fries will be important as will the success (or not) of the move of Blake Brandel to starting center. Brandel has been a solid depth player who could play all across the OL but now he is being entrusted with one of the most important positions in the game.

Donovan Jackson and Christian Darrisaw line up for the Vikings against the Bengals.

The two blockers settle in before the snap as Minnesota’s offensive front prepares to handle Cincinnati’s rush during an early home matchup that afternoon. Mandatory Credit: Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images.

First and foremost, a fully healthy Christian Darrisaw would be the key that makes the rest of the OL, and ultimately the offense, work. There could be no bigger boost for Minnesota than Darrisaw back at 100%.

Katsina United have announced the signing of former Akwa United captain Ubong Essien, popularly known as Kante, ahead of the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

The defensive midfielder has signed a two-year contract with the Katsina-based club as he begins a new chapter in his career.

Ubong was the captain of Akwa United during the 2025/2026 season, when the Uyo-based club competed in the second tier of Nigerian football.

His move to Katsina United will see him return to the NPFL as he looks to bring his experience and leadership to the team.

The 2026/2027 season will not be his first experience of life in northern Nigeria. Having grown up in the North, Ubong is familiar with the weather, culture and language, which should make it easier for him to settle into his new environment.

Katsina United unveiled Ubong alongside a number of other new signings during a ceremony at the club’s secretariat inside the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.

The club’s Chairman and Supervising Coordinator, Surajo Malumfashi, expressed confidence in the quality and experience of the new players.

He said the recruitment was part of the club’s efforts to build a competitive squad capable of achieving its targets in the new season.

Inside the field at the 2026 U.S. Women’s Amateur

Published

on

The U.S. Women’s Amateur assembles one of the strongest fields in amateur golf. The 126th championship at The Honors Course continues that tradition, bringing together 156 players from 16 countries and 33 states to compete for one of the game’s most prestigious titles.

As we’ve seen year after year, there is no single path to the U.S. Women’s Amateur — and this year’s field reflects that. Junior champions, collegiate standouts, seasoned amateurs and international contenders have all earned their place in Tennessee.

This week, the average age of competitors is just 19.9 years old, although the field spans five decades — from 14-year-old Maggie Jiayi Ma to Australia’s Sue Wooster, who is 64.

The championship’s international reach is just as evident, with players representing 16 countries, including Canada, Australia, China, Japan and the Republic of Korea. While players from 33 states make up the U.S. contingent, with California leading the way with 25 entrants, followed by Florida (13) and Texas (11).

Experience and pedigree are abundant too. Rianne Malixi, the 2024 winner here, headlines a group of nine USGA champions in the field, joined by reigning U.S. Girls’ Junior champions Aphrodite Deng and Clairey Lin. Accomplished veterans like Lara Tennant and Dawn Woodard bring multiple USGA titles of their own, while seven Curtis Cup players, five members of the U.S. National Junior Team and five athletes from the USGA’s Elite Amateur Program further illustrate the championship’s depth.

The world’s top amateurs are equally represented. Twelve players ranked inside the top 20 of the Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking are in the field, led by NCAA champion Farah O’Keefe and fellow top-20 players Asterisk Talley, Soomin Oh, Jasmine Koo and Malixi. Former NCAA champ and Stanford star Rachel Heck is also teeing it up.

Gatwick eyeing Stakes races after Rosehill victory in 2026

Published

Two jockeys race two brown horses side by side on a grass track with blue signage in the background, crossing the inside rail.

The progressive mare Gatwick has propelled herself into Stakes race calculations following a determined front-running performance to claim Saturday’s Ranvet Handicap (1200m) at Rosehill.

Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr’s mare achieved her second win from her past three starts, leading throughout under Zac Lloyd before digging deep to fend off all challengers.

Sent out as the $2.70 favourite, Gatwick held off Ernaux ($9) by a short neck, with Kwirky Smile ($5.50) a further 5¾ lengths behind in third.

Stable representative Ben Elam lauded the mare’s tenacity and Lloyd’s tactical ride, noting that the race was effectively won early.

“She was dynamic out of the gates, and it was probably won in the first part of the race,” Elam said.

“She is by Ole Kirk, so I always thought she’d run it out strongly. Even though she did a little bit in the early stages, he got a breather midrace, and she toughed it out well.

“Back on better footing for her, she showed that dynamic little turn of foot she’s got, and then she sustains that speed, which is crucial.”

Gatwick’s campaign has been carefully managed, with her runs spaced since returning in April. Elam indicated the stable is now considering whether to continue racing her while she holds a fitness edge over many rivals.

This could see the mare tackle an early-season black-type assignment if a suitable opportunity arises.

“She’s a horse we’ve always had a good opinion of, and it’s an interesting time of year,” Elam said.

“She’s rock-hard fit and there are probably some lower grade stakes races that might pop up where she’s the rock-hard fit horse, and there are some more proven horses returning from a break.

“There is a little bit to ponder there… it’s a good problem to have when you’ve got a progressive horse like this.”

It shapes as another significant week for the Price and Kent stable, with Golden Rose hopeful Guest House set to return in a Warwick Farm barrier trial on Tuesday.

The Golden Slipper Stakes winner completed his final piece of work at Rosehill on Saturday morning ahead of his trial as preparations ramp up for his spring campaign.

“He had his final gallop here (at Rosehill) this morning on the course proper and went through his gears really nicely,” Elam said.

“I’m looking forward to getting him back to the trials where we can let him do a little bit more.”

Stefon Diggs lands on $7,600,000,000 team’s “radar” amid heavy Bills rumors: Report

Published

on

Stefon Diggs is still looking for his next NFL team with the 2026 season approaching.

Diggs enjoyed a productive season with the New England Patriots in 2025, helping the team reach the Super Bowl. However, they chose not to bring the veteran receiver back for another year, leaving him on the open market heading into August.

One team to watch is the Washington Commanders. In a report published on Tuesday, ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler said Diggs is on Washington’s radar and that the interest appears to be mutual.

Fowler noted that Diggs, a native of the Washington area, likes the possibility of returning home.

“The Commanders are still in see-what-we-have mode at receiver, but I’m told free agent Stefon Diggs is on the team’s radar,” the article read. “Washington is monitoring the situation with Diggs, who’s intrigued by the chance to play in Washington (he’s from the area).

“Let’s see how things play out, but it seems like this is a realistic option as the sides keep in contact.”

During his one year in New England, Diggs started every game and emerged as Drake Maye’s preferred target. He finished the regular season with 85 catches for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, then added 14 receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown in the playoffs.

A move to Washington would likely position Diggs as the team’s No. 2 receiver behind Terry McLaurin. Given his recent production, he stands out as one of the most appealing veteran receivers still on the market, even with names such as Tyreek Hill, Keenan Allen and DeAndre Hopkins also available.

Bills also leaving the door open for a potential Stefon Diggs reunion

Stefon Diggs was impressive in his four-year run with the Buffalo Bills, catching 445 passes for 5,372 yards and 37 touchdowns before being traded to the Houston Texans ahead of the 2024 season.

Speculation about a return to Buffalo has surfaced this week, and head coach Joe Brady’s latest comments have only fueled that conversation. Appearing on “Up & Adams” on Saturday, Brady credited Diggs with helping transform the team’s offense and also helping QB Josh Allen’s growth into an elite quarterback.

“Stef was awesome for us here. I mean, look, Stef, the success that he had in Buffalo, like part of the offense that I’m running and we’re continuing to elevate, it was him coming here and what he was able to do with our offense to continue to get us to this point. Josh wouldn’t have continued to elevate the career that he had without a guy like Stefon Diggs.

“I don’t know anything (about Diggs returning). I know (Brandon) Beane’s always with the mindset that we’re always out there and rolling,” Brady said.

The Bills have received encouraging early-camp performances from D.J. Moore and rookie Skyler Bell, but Diggs’ track record makes him difficult to ignore as one of the top free agents still available.
