13-Year-Old Chinese Swimmer Yu Zidi Wins 2nd Gold At Asian Games 2026, Narrowly Misses World Record

Published

on

Yu Zidi, the 13-year-old Chinese swimmer, on Monday won her second gold medal at the Asian Games as she points to much larger things at the Los Angeles Olympics in two years and a showdown with Canadian Summer McIntosh. That head-to-head could come even earlier in next year’s swimming world championships in Budapest, Hungary. Yu took the 200-meter individual medley in 2 minutes, 6.10 seconds. That is just off the world record of 2:05.70 held by McIntosh. Yu also won the 200 butterfly on Sunday, and she’ll swim the 400 IM later in the week.

McIntosh won three gold medals in the Paris Olympics in 2024, all in the same races that Yu contests. McIntosh also holds the world marks in all of those events: the 200 fly (2:01.65), the 200 IM (2:05.70) and the 400 IM (4:23,65).

As a 12-year-old at the World Championships a year ago in Singapore, Yu finished fourth in her three events, and won a bronze medal in a relay.

She made more headlines earlier this year when she defeated American Regan Smith in the 200 fly in a meet in China. Smith was the silver medalist in the event in the 2024 Olympics.

Asian Games officials said it was unclear if Yu is the youngest gold-medal winner at the event, which dates from 1951 in New Delhi, because records are incomplete.

She’s not even the youngest contestant entered this time. That is believed to be 11-year-old Yuki Kurihara, who competes for Japan in esports.

China won six of the seven gold medals on Sunday, It was not quite as commanding on Monday, but still won gold in five of seven events. In the 100 breaststroke, China’s Dong Zhihao and Shin Ohashi of Japan tied with the same first-place time (58.64)

China won 28 gold medals in swimming in the Asian Games three years ago in Hangzhou, China, with South Korea getting six and Japan with five. It looks set top that mark.

Man City get emphatic Elliot Anderson handball verdict amid Sunderland and Arsenal frustration

Manchester City avoided conceding a penalty during the thrilling 5-3 victory over Sunderland in the Premier League

Manchester City have been reassured that referee Robert Jones and VAR Michael Salisbury were right not to award Sunderland a penalty during their 5-3 victory on Sunday. The Black Cats were left frustrated in the second half when the ball hit Elliot Anderson’s hand in the penalty area as the midfielder tussled for possession with Enzo Le Fee.

In his post-match press conference, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris was adamant that a penalty should have been awarded. “It was hard to see that as not a handball. It is what it is and we have to accept the decision. It’s hard to comment,” the manager said.

Reviewing the incident on the latest episode of Ref Watch, former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher insisted the officials got the decision correct. “I didn’t think it was a penalty when I saw it yesterday, and I don’t think it is a penalty now,” Gallagher said.

“I think there’s a lot of interesting things in it. If you look, first of all, when it comes in, the first offence there, the handball, is by the Sunderland player. As it runs on, it strikes Elliot Anderson on the left arm. Watch this. Comes off the Sunderland player, onto the left arm, ricochets onto his right arm. He turns, it hits his hand. His right arm is the one that slaps it away.

“That’s what people haven’t seen. This will show you there. Contact here is on his left arm. Goes up onto his right hand. He’s turning his body.

“He’s got no chance of moving. His arms are already there. He hasn’t moved his arm. It’s turning into the ball. It strikes him, there’s no doubt about that. But I still think, if that’s given as a penalty, it will be overturned, because they will say, It’s just not a deliberate handball. It’s just a consequence.”

Gallagher was then asked if the penalty had been awarded on field, if it would have been allowed to stand or overturned as an error by Jones. “Well, it wasn’t an error because the referee didn’t give it,” Gallagher added.

“I think the VAR would clearly say, no, it’s not, because it’s come off the Sunderland man onto his left arm there. It’s cannoned onto his right hand as he’s turning. It’s not going to be given as a penalty.”

Ugochukwu finished second in the season-ending race, which was enough to secure the title ahead of Freddie Slater. Tuukka Taponen won the race, while Ugochukwu’s consistent results across the season helped him finish 14 points clear in the championship.

Speaking on the pressure of the final weekend, he said: “Today I knew what I had to do to win the championship. So, it was in my hands to keep it clean, keep the cars behind at bay, and just bring it home to the line.”

The 19-year-old described his title battle with Slater as a strong contest throughout the year.

“For sure this is a great step for my career, really important, and it’s a good step for what’s to come,” he added.

The Formula 3 title is Ugochukwu’s second championship of 2026, following his Formula Regional Oceania title earlier in the year. He said Formula 2 is the next logical step towards his dream of reaching Formula 1, but for now, he is enjoying the achievement.
