Manchester United were linked with a move for Roma star Manu Kone during the summer transfer window

Roma have reportedly increased their asking price for midfielder Manu Kone amid reported interest from Manchester United. The Reds were credited with an interest in signing the France international during the summer transfer window as they looked to strengthen their midfield options.

United went into the transfer market for three new midfielders in the summer, with Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba all making the move to Old Trafford on permanent deals.

Kone’s future was the subject of intense speculation during the summer transfer window, particularly after the 25-year-old impressed during the World Cup with France.

Chelsea were also credited with an interest in signing Kone in the closing stages of the window, particularly after Enzo Fernandez completed a £125million switch to Manchester City.

A fresh update has emerged on Roma’s stance on Kone’s future just a few weeks after the summer transfer window closed.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma have increased the price tag that they have placed on Kone’s signature, having previously rejected a bid from Chelsea around €60million (£51.6m).

It has now been claimed that the Serie A club would now demand at least €100million (£86million) to consider parting company with Kone in any future transfer window.

It remains to be seen if United, or any other club, will look to try and sign Kone from Roma in January or next summer’s transfer window.

Chelsea seemingly expressed the strongest interest in trying to sign the midfielder, with Monaco star Lamine Camara also a target on deadline day.

Having signed three midfielders in the summer, United were also looking to bring in a new left-back to compete with Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu before the transfer window closed.

Tyrell Malacia left United as a free agent at the end of last season, and United went on to not sign a replacement, leaving Shaw and Dorgu as the only left-back options in the senior squad until January, at least.

United still have two weeks to wait before returning to Premier League action after the international break, with Tottenham Hotspur their opponents on October 10 at Old Trafford.

On the other side of London, Carlos Alcaraz led Team Europe’s comeback on Laver Cup day two with a three-set singles win over Taylor Fritz. Europe now has a 7-5 lead heading into the final day of action on Sunday.

In volleyball, France were beaten by defending champions Poland in the European Championship final on Saturday evening in Milan. Les Bleus were ultimately defeated in four sets.

Demi Vollering has rounded off a near-perfect road cycling campaign by claiming her first World Championships title in Montreal on Saturday. The 29-year-old has also won both the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia this season, among a string of other major races.

Scotland and Northern Ireland secured qualification for the Netball World Cup after a three-day event in East Kilbride.

The top two sides from the four-team tournament won their spots in the finals, which take place in Sydney, Australia, with Wales and Republic of Ireland failing to qualify.

Northern Ireland’s emphatic 73-50 win in the early match on Sunday meant they would qualify should Scotland win or draw, while Wales’ only path to qualification was through a victory over Scotland.

Heading into the final match of the tournament between the Scots and Welsh, the event hosts had their spot in the finals secured unless Wales won with an overwhelming points haul and Scotland ran out 55-48 victors.

The World Cup runs from 25 August-5 September 2027.

In the beginning, the Presidents Cup pressed repeat.

For its first two editions, in 1994 and 1996, the Ryder Cup-style competition pitting the United States against the world (minus the UK, Ireland and continental Europe) was played at the same course: Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, in Gainesville, VA, a venue chosen largely for its proximity to the nation’s capital. The event, after all, was called the Presidents Cup, with Gerald Ford as its honorary chairman. It made sense to keep things close to Washington, D.C.

In those early goings, the PGA Tour, which created the event, had no plans to take it overseas at all. Not until it had gathered momentum — with the stirrings of a fan base and sponsor interest — did the competition settle into its current rhythm, shifting back and forth, every two years, between the U.S. and overseas (it was postponed in 2001 by the attacks of Sept. 11, and then again in 2020 by the pandemic). In 1998, the biennial battle moved to Australia; Royal Melbourne Golf Club was the stage.

In the years since, the Presidents Cup has gone back to the well more than once. It returned to Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in 2000 and then again in 2005. It has also double-dipped at Royal Melbourne (2011 and 2019) and Royal Montreal Golf Club (2007 and 2024). This year’s edition wraps up today, with Sunday singles at Medinah No. 3 in the Chicago suburbs deciding whether the U.S. extends its stranglehold on the event or the International team pulls off its second win in 16 tries.

Like the team rosters, Presidents Cup venues have grown more diverse. In the first two playings, the International team had no players from Canada or Korea; on this year’s roster, it has four. Kingston Heath, Melbourne, Australia (2028)

The 2028 Presidents Cup heads back to Australia’s Sandbelt — just not to Royal Melbourne. Kingston Heath, a few minutes down the road, will get its turn, marking the event’s fourth visit to Melbourne overall, tying Gainesville for the most Cups hosted by a single city.

Kingston Heath has been a fixture of Australian golf for a century, hosting seven Australian Opens and multiple Australian Masters, most recently in 2012, when Adam Scott — a potential International captain for 2028 — won on his home Sandbelt turf. But its reputation among architecture buffs rests less on trophies than on land. Dan Soutar laid out the course in the 1920s, and Alister MacKenzie, fresh off his work at Royal Melbourne, refined the bunkering in 1926, with construction led by the legendary green-keeper Mick Morcom. Together they turned a modest, largely flat piece of sandy ground into one of the most studied routings in golf, and one of its most compelling tests.

Bellerive, St. Louis, MO (2030)

Two years later, the Cup returns to St. Louis and Bellerive Country Club, a course with a big-event pedigree: the 1965 U.S. Open (Gary Player’s career Grand Slam, on the youngest course ever to host one), the 1992 PGA Championship (Nick Price’s first major), the inaugural U.S. Mid-Amateur in 1981, and, most recently, the 2018 PGA Championship, won by Brooks Koepka.

The club itself traces to 1897, but the course the Presidents Cup will play dates to 1960, when Robert Trent Jones Sr. was brought in to design an entirely new 18 holes on land west of the city — a muscular, bunker-heavy layout nicknamed the “Green Monster of Ladue.” His son, Rees Jones, gave it a $9.5 million overhaul in 2005-06, rebuilding bunkers, tightening fairways and adding water on the second hole. The result is a brawny championship course,  and the fifth different U.S. venue to host the Presidents Cup.

The Indian men played out a draw with Hungary and settled for the silver medal on a tie-break, while the women drew with Georgia to bring home the bronze in the 46th Chess Olympiad that concluded on Sunday. The Uzbekistan team regained the gold medal in the open section after winning the final round game against Ukraine by a 2,5-1.5 points. The Uzbeks ended with 20 points out of a possible 22, winning as many as 10 rounds and losing a lone match against Germany. The Indian men ended up with 18 points and were tied for the second spot with Germany that defeated Holland. However, thanks to a better tie-break score, the Indian team ended with silver while Germany had to be content with the bronze.

In the women’s section, China annexed the gold with another fine performance against Vietnam, winning by a 3-1 margin. The Chinese team also ended with 20 points in all, a couple of points more than second-placed Kazakhstan.

The Indian team was yet against rescued by B Savitha Shri who has clearly been the best performer among the Indian women. Ending up with nine points out of her 10 games, Savitha Shri was clearly the reason why the Indian women could win the bronze.

As it happened in the match, Humpy scored a quick victory over Nana Dzagnidze but Divya Deshmukh lost against Bella Khotenashvili on fourth board.

After Vantika Agrawal was also held to a draw on the third board, much was left to Savitha Shri to survive a very difficult position where her king was under constant scrutiny. Savitha eventually fought move for move to force the draw.

In addition to the team bronze, Savitha also won the individual gold medal for her performance. Humpy and Vantika won the bronze while Divya Deshmukh got silver medal for her performance.

Among the Indian men, Praggnanandhaa won the bronze for his performance but following a last round debacle, Gukesh narrowly missed out on gold.

The match was stopped for a brief while as Anahat received medical attention after the unfortunate collision.

Down 0-2 after losing the first two games, Anahat had a mountain to climb but she showed great character to make a strong comeback to claim the third game and fourth games and force a decider, in which the Indian did not allow her opponent to dictate terms.

In the mixed doubles semifinals, after a tight first game in which Lee Ka Yi and Tang Ming Hong edged the Indians, Joshna and Senthilkumar bounced back in style to claim the second game.

For just the third time ever — and the first time in Rio de Janeiro — the NFL is heading to Brazil, and it’s bringing a superstar-level matchup. Lamar Jackson leads the Baltimore Ravens against Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys in a showdown between two teams with Super Bowl hopes.

Both teams enter Sunday’s contest 1-1. The Ravens impressed in a 41-23 Week 1 win over the Colts but struggled down the stretch on both sides of the ball in a 24-17 Week 2 upset loss to the Saints. The Cowboys, meanwhile, bounced back from a 28-20 Week 1 loss with a 37-20 romp over the Commanders. Prescott threw four touchdown passes and passed Tony Romo for most passing touchdowns in Cowboys history during the rout.

It could be a high-scoring affair in Brazil’s second-most populous city. Jackson showed some excellent play in Week 1 before a quieter Week 2, but it could be a major bounce-back opportunity against a Cowboys defense still figuring things out under new offensive coordinator Christian Parker. Currently, Dallas is allowing a league-high 6.1 yards per play. And if it’s not Jackson doing the damage, the ageless Derrick Henry will look to plow through an iffy run defense. Henry’s 212 rushing yards are second-most in the NFL through two weeks.

But Prescott has plenty of firepower to match. CeeDee Lamb is off to a terrific start with 13 catches for 197 yards and three touchdowns, and it should be only a matter of time before George Pickens gets going, too. Pickens, coming off a 1,429-yard season in 2025, has just 68 yards through two games.

The Ravens’ defense showed some good signs but, like Dallas, is adjusting to a new play caller. Jesse Minter was one of the best in the business the last two years for the Chargers, and it should come around sooner rather than later.

Cowboys vs. Ravens: What you need to know

Superstar quarterbacks in the spotlight: After a ridiculous Week 1 — 324 yards and a touchdown passing, plus 40 rush yards and a touchdown running — Jackson was far less effective in Week 2. The Cowboys’ defense should present plenty of opportunities, especially on the ground: Jayden Daniels was on his way to a monster day rushing before his injury, and in Week 1, Jaxson Dart churned through Dallas’ defense. Prescott, on the other hand, was terrific in Week 2 after a poor Week 1. He had nearly as many touchdowns (four) as incompletions (five) and hit on several big plays downfield. Jackson’s Ravens beat Prescott’s Cowboys 28-25 in their only previous meeting back in 2024.

Injuries looming large: The Cowboys’ defense has already ruled out four players, all on the defense: cornerback Cobie Durant, safeties Malik Hooker and P.J. Locke and linebacker DeMarvion Overshown. Young players such as rookie safety Caleb Downs, rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham and second-year cornerback Shavon Revel will be in big spots throughout the game. It will certainly help Dallas if Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers is unable to go; he missed Week 2 after hurting his hamstring in Week 1 (he had 150 yards and a touchdown by halftime). Left tackle Ronnie Stanley‘s status (toe) is also up in the air, but in positive news, defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike (neck) practiced fully this week and could play for the first time in over a year.

Field conditions worth monitoring: Maracanã Stadium is home to the soccer team Flamengo, and many of their players have complained about the playing surface. In the first NFL game in Brazil, a 34-29 Eagles win over the Packers at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, many players complained about playing the field conditions after the game. NFL field director Nick Pappas said the league is “in a good spot” regarding having the field ready to go Sunday, but this will certainly be worth monitoring.

No first-year coach has won the Super Bowl in 37 years. Can Jesse Minter, steadfast and steady, change that?

The Ravens surprisingly went away from Henry a bit last week. Despite Baltimore leading 14-6 at halftime, Henry got just five carries in the second half, finishing with 16 for the game. I’d anticipate a heavy dose of Henry against a Dallas defense that has shown little resistance to the run. If the Cowboys can’t stop the run from the get-go, it’ll be a long day in Rio de Janeiro.

If they can stop the run, though — or at least limit it — they could ride a hot offense to help take Henry out of the game plan if Baltimore is in catch-up mode. Prescott has to take care of the ball; he threw an awful interception against the Giants in Week 1 that proved a massive turning point. Kyle Hamilton, Nate Wiggins and the rest of the secondary will have their hands full with this talented passing attack. The Cowboys would love to get their own run game going, but that hasn’t happened so far.

Ultimately, the Ravens get back in the win column in a thriller. The return of Madubuike is a major boost, and Trey Hendrickson should have a chance to create major havoc if the secondary can just give him an extra second or two. Combine that with a big day from Jackson, and Baltimore takes a long, victorious flight home.

Pick: Ravens 31, Cowboys 30; OVER 52.5

The Heisman race had started to feel like a two-horse race between Darian Mensah and Trinidad Chambliss. Those two had been the most exciting quarterbacks on two of the country’s more prolific offenses, and they absolutely deserve to be in the conversation. With that being said, I’m not sure how you can watch college football and not come to the immediate conclusion that Jeremiah Smith is the best player in the country.

It’s more than just that when it comes to Smith. I feel that if you placed him in the NFL today, he would immediately be one of the best players in the league. Every time he steps onto the field for the Scarlet and Grey, he’s doing things that have never been done before. This Saturday’s matchup against Illinois might have been his most dominant yet.

Jeremiah Smith looked like the only guy on the field today as he torched the Illini to the tune of 12 catches, 217 yards, and 4 touchdowns. For the fantasy gurus out there, that’s a 57.7-point day for Smith. He nearly outgained Illinois receivers on his own.

When you’re watching an Ohio State game, it looks like defense, and Julian Sayin only seeing one person on the field, and it simply does not matter. Malachi Toney and KJ Duff have looked awesome this year for Miami and Rutgers but they don’t have anywhere near the gravity on offense that Smith has.

Miami has another weak game against Central Michigan on the schedule, so Toney might be able to have a big night, but as it stands, Smith leads or is tied for touchdowns, yards, and catches for a receiver. He’s done it against every level of competition this year, and he should absolutely be the Heisman favorite if it ended today.

Per the Heisman trophy website, the award is given out to the most outstanding player in American college football at the end of each year. Every week that I continue to watch Smith play at the college level, I feel that he is meeting and exceeding everything needed to win a Heisman. It’s not often when watching college football you get to see something special. Each weekend Smith plays at Ohio State, he breaks records, puts up gaudy stats, and makes you wonder how dominant he’ll be once he’s playing on Sundays.

After his four touchdown performance, Smith went from +1300 to win the Heisman to +300, so unless Chambliss and Mensah have all-worldly performances, you might’ve waited too long to bet on the best player in the nation.

Trainer Joe Pride is leaning towards having two starters in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap, with forecasts of intermittent rain throughout the next seven days suggesting he will likely accept with his star galloper Ceolwulf. The prestigious Randwick mile race has been a long-term campaign goal for stablemate Attica, while Pride has maintained flexibility with Ceolwulf, whose primary target is the King Charles III Stakes (1600m) on October 17.

Ceolwulf triumphed in the Epsom two years ago on his way to claiming his inaugural King Charles win. He followed the same trajectory 12 months ago, finishing sixth in the Epsom before securing consecutive victories in the Everest Day contest.

“I reckon we’ll have two runners, Attica and Ceolwulf. I’m confident now with the rain around and a bit more at the end of the week,” Pride remarked.

“I was happy to go straight to the King Charles if I needed to, but I’m also happy to give him the ‘prep’ I’ve given him for the last two years to get to the King Charles, which is running in the Epsom. I think we’re going to get the opportunity to do that. I haven’t locked it in yet, but I’d suggest we will.”

Ceolwulf is allocated 59kg for the Epsom, and no horse has carried this weight or more to victory since Super Impose’s success with 61kg in 1991. Pride is acutely aware that Ceolwulf faces a monumental task and is hopeful the gelding will draw a favourable barrier at Tuesday’s draw to mitigate the challenge.

A rain-affected track on Saturday is also expected to be a critical factor, with wet weather predicted for the end of the week. “You don’t want to draw outside fifteen because he’d be going right back and giving away a ridiculous start,” Pride commented. “Between five and ten, you’re probably two or three lengths closer. It’s a race we’ve used successfully. He won it two years ago, but he won it with about 54 kilos so winning it with 59, it’s not beyond him because he’s such a good horse, but it would want to be a bit of a wet track.”

Ceolwulf is currently a $15 outsider in pre-post markets, which are jointly headed by the Chris Waller-trained Autumn Boy and the undefeated New Zealander Well Written, both priced at $3.50. Attica is being kept safe at $6.
