The United States completed a thrilling comeback on the final day to beat the Internationals and win an 11th successive Presidents Cup.

The hosts, containing eight of the world’s 11 top-ranked players, trailed by three points going into Sunday and were looking to avoid just a second defeat since the biennial competition began 32 years ago.

They dominated the singles, winning nine of the 12 matches, to seal a 17-13 win at Medinah – the scene of Team Europe’s famous Ryder Cup comeback win in 2012.

Jacob Bridgeman secured the decisive point by holing a four-foot par putt at the 18th to seal a one-up win over Australia’s Min Woo Lee.

There were also wins for Cameron Young, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Chris Gotterup, Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele and Jackson Koivun.

“I told the guys last night that funny stuff happens here. Medinah’s got a history of funny things happening,” said US captain Brandt Snedeker, who was a member of the team beaten by Europe in 2012.

“All these guys fought for each other, fought for this country, fought for this team.”

International captain Geoff Ogilvy said: “The US team came out firing, we knew they would.

“It was on a knife edge all day. If some of those one downs we had out there had flipped to one up, the numbers looked really good and who knows what momentum that could give.”

US President Donald Trump was in attendance in his role as honorary chairman, greeting the players and making a speech before the matches got under way.

Brandon McNulty emerged the surprise winner of the UCI Road World Championships men’s race on Sunday in Montreal to end a 33-year title drought for American men in the race. The 28-year-old put his hands on his helmet in disbelief and pumped his fist after crossing the finish line with a time of 6 hours, 17 minutes and ⁠4 seconds.

Australia’s Michael Matthews was second and Mathieu `van der Poel of the Netherlands was third. “I’m really at a loss for words. Until the last 300 metres I didn’t believe it, I ⁠was so tired,” said McNulty.

He was quick to credit his teammates after securing the `first road world title for American men since Lance Armstrong in 1993. “We’ve said for weeks that we have a super strong team and that it’s possible. We rode crazy well. We marked everything, ‌had guys ahead,” he said.

“I knew something could happen but it would take a miracle. I guess today, a miracle happened.” McNulty, who won the Montreal Grand Prix last year, launched his attack with 32 km to go and held a 50-second lead ⁠heading into the final lap.

He struggled on the last significant climb and saw his lead shrink to 10 seconds with 10 km left but none of the chasers were able to take advantage, with Van der Poel leading an attack with 6.8 km to go that fizzled out.

The absence of two-time defending champion Tadej Pogacar, who is recovering from a crash he suffered last month, left ‌the field open.

Without the Slovenian in the field, the race was chaotic and unpredictable throughout the 273.4-km course, which included 12 laps of a 13.4-km circuit that was packed with `enthusiastic fans. McNulty had not been among the pre-race favorites – unlike former world ⁠champion Remco Evenepoel or young talents Isaac del Toro and Paul Seixas.

Armstrong congratulated McNulty on his victory. “Congratulations @BrandonMcNult ‌on winning the World ​Championship in Montreal today,” Armstrong posted on ‌social media.

“Hands down the most exciting race of the year and a deserved winner. A thing of beauty”.

With a 15-yard completion to Konata Mumpfield in the second quarter, Matthew Stafford became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least 20,000 yards with two different teams.

Stafford was 111 yards shy of 20,000 with the Los Angeles Rams before Week 3, and he reached the mark early in the match against the Denver Broncos. He had 190 yards at halftime, which pushed his Los Angeles total to 20,079 and his career total to 65,188.

The milestone lands six seasons into his time with the Rams. Stafford threw for 45,109 yards in 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions, along with 282 touchdowns in 165 games, after being the No. 1 overall pick in 2009. Now, with 20,000 yards and counting in Los Angeles, he owns a second franchise résumé that would stand on its own.

The two stops compare closely. In Detroit, he completed 62.6% of his passes with 282 touchdowns, 144 interceptions and an 89.9 passer rating. Entering Sunday, his Rams numbers were 65.5%, 145 touchdowns, 54 interceptions and a 98.6 rating. He averaged 273.4 yards per game with the Lions and 261.7 with the Rams.

The biggest difference is the record. Stafford went 74-90-1 as a starter in Detroit. He entered Sunday 47-29 with the Rams, and that run included a Super Bowl title.

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has highlighted the two ‘dream fights’ that he would love to make as soon as possible.

At present, Naoya Inoue is deemed by many to be the pound-for-pound king, following the retirement of Terence Crawford and the decline of Oleksandr Usyk, who is set to hang up the gloves himself after one more fight, which could come against Deontay Wilder.

Whilst speaking on the Fight Your Corner podcast, Hearn revealed dream fights that involve both Inoue and Crawford, stating that he would love for his fighters Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez and Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis to meet Inoue and Crawford in order to climb the pound-for-pound ratings next year.

“My dream fight right now is Bam against Inoue. Number one vs. Number Two. Also, I would love to see Boots [Ennis] fight Crawford.”

Hearn may get one of his wishes, as at present, it seems highly likely that Inoue and Rodriguez will collide, with the Japanese sensation content to sit on the sidelines and allow the Texan to have one more bantamweight outing – rumoured to be a title unification against Christian Medina – before their proposed meeting in the spring. 

As for the possible match-up between ‘Boots’ and Crawford, despite continuous call-outs from Ennis, ‘Bud’ appears uninterested in a return to the sport following his retirement last December after his victory over Canelo Alvarez three months earlier.

Instead, should WBA and WBO 154lb champion Ennis seek to move into contention as the pound-for-pound king, the undisputed super-welterweight title must be captured – and it is well within his reach, with a bout against IBF champion Josh Kelly expected to come next.

Ireland players lowered their heads during the Israel national anthem after the contentious Nations League match went ahead on Sunday.

The Irish team wore black armbands, with the fixture attracting bitter opposition in Ireland over Israel’s actions in Gaza.

The Irish players were seen looking down at the turf and also held their hands behind their backs during the pre-match anthem, and Irish captain Dara O’Shea approached the center of the field for the pre-match talk with his hands still firmly clasped behind his back.

O’Shea shook hands with the referee and his assistants but there was no attempt to shake the hand of Israel captain Manor Solomon. While Irish national broadcaster RTE opted for reduced coverage.

Reserve goalkeeper Gavin Bazuno decided Saturday to boycott both of Ireland’s games against Israel because of what he said was his “personal belief that the killing of innocent people is wrong.”

There was a small group of Israeli fans in the otherwise almost-empty stadium in Debrecen, Hungary, but an even smaller group of around 10 people without colors were celebrating when Troy Parrott broke the deadlock in the 13th minute.

There weren’t supposed to be any Irish fans present. Some Ireland supporters who managed to get tickets through the Israeli soccer federation told Irish broadcaster RTÉ that those had been canceled Saturday night.

Adam Idah made it 2-0 three minutes after Parrott’s opener and Jack Moylan got the third goal in the 25th.

It was 3-0 at halftime, but Ireland needed goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher at his best to deny Israel after the break, and tempers became frayed around the hour mark after a clash between Idah and Raz Shlomo.

Both players were booked by German referee Harm Osmers.Israel forward Sayed Abu Farchi was suspended for the game after his sending off following his goal-celebration in Thursday’s 3-1 loss to Austria.Ireland and Israel meet again on Oct. 4 in Ireland’s “home” game in Backa Topola, Serbia.

U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker credited U.S. President Donald Trump for inspiring the Americans to a thrilling Presidents Cup comeback victory over the International Team.

An 11th straight victory for the USA came after big surges on the back nine by two-time major champion Collin Morikawa and 21-year-old rookie Jackson Koivun.

And despite being outplayed for three days in the team golf format, the USA dominated the singles to claw back a three-point deficit and win 17-13.

Captain Snedeker then praised Trump for his impact, having seen the President welcome his players on the first tee at Medinah with the home fans creating a raucous atmosphere.

“All these guys fought for each other, fought for this country, fought for this team,” Snedeker said. “And one last shout to Donald Trump, President Trump.

“He told me I was going to bring some energy today for you guys, you guys need it, and I told him if we did this, he gets all the credit. Thank you, President Trump.”

Cameron Young and Justin Thomas set the tone early. Scottie Scheffler took down Nico Echavarria with a show of pure sportsmanship when a spectator disrupted the Colombian’s swing. Patrick Cantlay had another moment, as he always seem to do in this competition, holing a birdie putt from just inside 60 feet on the par-3 16th against hard-luck Adam Scott.

Five matches remained on the course — the Americans were 1 up in three of them, the other two were all square. All the Internationals had to do was find three points from them. The Americans simply refused to budge.

Koivun was 2 down through 10 holes to the Internationals’ top performer this week, Si Woo Kim, when he won three straight holes to flip the color to American red on the board. The kid drilled his tee shot on the 18th, and twirled his iron when he knew the approach was pure. He wound up with a 2-up victory, and then it was a matter of time.

The clinching point came from Jacob Bridgeman, who rolled in a 3-foot par putt on the 18th green for a 1-up victory over Min Woo lee, assuring the Americans the 15 1/2 points they needed.
