Television has changed drastically in the last five years. Audiences just don’t have the time for surface-level stories and filler episodes anymore. The shift obviously became especially noticeable during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, when people turned to TV for escapism. However, it also made them way more selective about what actually deserved their time. Almost every genre adapted to those changing expectations in one way or another, but thriller television absolutely thrived because of it.
Modern thrillers became more psychological, more character-driven, and willing to explore real fears, even when the stories involved supernatural, dystopian worlds, or impossible sci-fi concepts. That’s exactly why the last few years have produced some of the strongest thriller shows TV has seen in a long time, and this list includes the best of them that stand in a league of their own.

‘The Rig’ (2023–Present)
The Rig is hands down one of the most underrated shows of the last few years. It puts a fascinating spin on the typical isolation setup that many thrillers follow. The story traps its characters on an oil rig in the middle of the North Sea as they are completely cut off from the rest of the world. The audience follows the crew of the Kinloch Bravo, whose communication from the mainland completely shuts down after a mysterious fog surrounds them. What initially feels like a coincidental technical malfunction slowly turns into something much more horrific when scientist Rose Mason (Emily Hampshire) begins suspecting that an ancient organism has been released from the ocean floor when the crew members start behaving strangely.
The show thrives on that growing sense of paranoia, and once the audience realizes that the narrative is taking a paranormal turn, the tension goes up several notches. Every episode slowly reveals another layer of the mystery, and in doing so, the show constantly explores humanity’s relationship with nature, which makes the horror feel a little too real. Overall, The Rig is the kind of show that one just can’t stop watching thanks to its claustrophobic atmosphere and emotional complexity.

‘Ripley’ (2024)
Andrew Scott is a treat to watch on screen, and Ripley only reaffirms that. The Netflix series, based on Patricia Highsmith’s iconic novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, follows the actor as Tom Ripley, a struggling con artist living in New York during the 1960s. His life completely changes when he is hired by wealthy businessman Herbert Greenleaf (Kenneth Lonergan) to travel to Italy and convince his son Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn) to come back home. However, once Tom inserts himself into Dickie’s luxurious lifestyle, admiration slowly turns into obsession, and the story spirals into manipulation, deception, and something much darker.
Ripley is a delicious slow burn that really focuses on Tom’s psychology and his growing obsession with Dickie. Everything he does feels calculated, and the audience is constantly wondering how far he is willing to go to protect himself. The black-and-white cinematography also gives the show a unique identity compared to most other modern thrillers and intentionally makes every location feel cold and empty. The show isn’t built around constant twists or cliffhangers, but around the fear of Tom’s carefully constructed identity collapsing any second.

‘Black Bird’ (2022)
Apple TV has been killing it with its thriller shows recently, and Black Bird is one entry that just can’t be missed. The psychologically intense story follows Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton), a charismatic drug dealer sentenced to ten years in prison. He has the chance of a lifetime when the FBI offers to transfer him to a maximum-security prison for the criminally insane to gain the trust of suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser) to get him to confess.
That begins a psychological chess game driven by paranoia and even exhaustion. Black Bird never glamorizes violence and keeps the focus on how this process begins to affect Jimmy. Hauser deserves all the praise, though, because he plays Larry as awkward, lonely, and emotionally fragile, all of which somehow makes him even more disturbing than one might think. The show never stops feeling terrifying because it perfects the art of conveying dread through conversations, body language, and what Larry might reveal next.

‘Yellowjackets’ (2021–Present)
Yellowjackets is easily one of the most unhinged shows on TV right now, but that’s what makes it such a great watch. The series follows a high-school girls’ soccer team whose plane crashes deep in the Canadian wilderness in 1996, where they remain stranded for over a year. The setup begins as a straightforward survival story, but takes a dark turn as hunger, isolation, and paranoia begin tearing the group apart. The story also flashes forward 25 years later and follows the surviving women as they try to live normal lives while desperately hiding what truly happened when they were stranded.
For starters, this dual-timeline structure adds an adrenaline-fueled sense of suspense to the show. The audience knows that these characters are deeply damaged adults, which only deepens the curiosity about how they got there. The show never fully reveals whether the growing cult-like behavior among them is psychological or whether something supernatural is at play. This uncertainty is what keeps the viewers coming back for more. The best part about Yellowjackets is that it is never predictable. However, instead of utilizing hollow twists or shock value to keep the audience hooked, it builds a fascinating world and characters who are impossible to look away from.

‘Beef’ (2023–Present)
Beef is an extremely interesting study of the human mind and how people react to conflicts. The Netflix series begins with a simple road rage incident between struggling contractor Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) and wealthy entrepreneur Amy Lau (Ali Wong). Most people would move on after a moment like that, but Beef is built around the idea that both of these characters are already carrying so much anger and frustration that this becomes the breaking point for everything else in their lives. Their feud refuses to stop, and almost becomes addictive because it’s fascinating to see how far they can go in their quest for revenge. However, even with a premise as absurd as this, the characters in Beef feel deeply human.
They are portrayed as lonely individuals with their own share of struggles, which explains why they keep making the absolute worst decisions. Yeun and Wong’s chemistry is the heart of the show as every interaction between their characters spirals out of control. Beef strikes the perfect balance between dark humor and genuinely intense moments that reveal the characters’ deepest insecurities. Beef Season 2 thrives on the very same structure, just with a different story and brand-new characters. It’s undeniably one of Netflix’s strongest anthology series, not only for its brilliant cinematography and stellar performances, but also because of how relatable it feels.

‘3 Body Problem’ (2024–Present)
3 Body Problem is an ambitious thriller that adapts Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past novels. The story begins during China’s Cultural Revolution, where astrophysicist Ye Wenjie (Zine Tseng/Rosalind Chao) gets involved in a secret military project searching for extraterrestrial life. In the present timeline, a group of scientist friends known as the Oxford Five begin to witness events that completely defy the laws of physics. The show then moves between mystery and science fiction as it gradually reveals what’s really at play.
The most gripping part about 3 Body Problem is how it turns abstract scientific ideas into absolute nightmare fuel. The aliens aren’t treated as spectacle, but they are given depth and complexity that adds to the emotional intensity of the story. The story begins with one woman’s trauma and expands into an exploration of civilization, faith, and technology. The scale is definitely huge here, but it never loses sight of the characters caught in the middle of it all. That balance is what keeps the story engaging even during its most science-heavy moments.

‘The Last of Us’ (2023–Present)
The Last of Us is a cultural phenomenon. The series, based on the highly successful video game franchise created by Naughty Dog, takes place a decade after a fungal infection destroys most of civilization by transforming humans into violent creatures known as the infected. The story follows Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) as he is tasked with transporting teenager Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey) across what is left of the United States after she is discovered to be mysteriously immune to the infection. The simple escort mission takes an emotional turn when the two are forced to depend on each other for survival and form a deep bond through their shared trauma.
The Last of Us is a traditional post-apocalyptic thriller, but it grounds everything in reality. Even the infected are inspired by the real-world Cordyceps fungus. Every community Joel and Ellie encounter has been shaped by years of fear and grief, because the show wants to explore how people emotionally survive after society collapses. Joel and Ellie’s relationship is obviously the core of the series, and the fact that death could come at them from anywhere gives the show a constant sense of tension. Underneath all the horror and destruction, though, The Last of Us is a show about love, and that makes it worth watching.

‘Slow Horses’ (2022–Present)
Slow Horses has truly revived spy thriller TV. It takes away all the glamor usually associated with espionage and takes a more gritty approach to it. The series, based on Mick Herron’s Slough House novels, follows a group of disgraced MI5 agents who have been restricted to miserable admin work under Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), a brilliant but problematic intelligence veteran who isn’t really interested in anything. However, things change when River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), an ambitious young agent, is desperate to prove he does not belong with the rejects.
From there, Slow Horses slowly pulls its dysfunctional team into kidnappings, political conspiracies, terrorist threats, and internal MI5 cover-ups that are far bigger than anything they were supposed to handle. The brilliance of the show lies in how chaotic everything feels. The crew makes mistakes and panics under pressure, but their messiness grounds the tension. Every mission feels unpredictable because the audience never trusts these characters to survive it. Slow Horses balances dark humor, character-driven drama, and genuine suspense, and proves that spy thrillers don’t need flashy gadgets and action sequences to stay gripping.

‘Severance’ (2022–Present)
Severance is one of the smartest shows of all time because it takes a simple idea and pushes it to its absolute limit. The Apple TV series follows Mark Scout (Adam Scott), an employee at the mysterious biotechnology company Lumon Industries who has undergone a procedure called severance. Now, this operation surgically separates a person’s work memories from their personal ones to create two completely different identities. Mark’s innie only exists inside the office, while his outie has no idea what happens during the workday. The process is meant to be this clean solution for work-life balance, but the show slowly reveals how horrifying that concept actually is. Lumon begins feeling less like a workplace and more like a psychological prison as the story progresses.
The employees spend their days doing meaningless tasks that even they don’t understand, while also being under constant surveillance. However, things change when Helly Riggs (Britt Lower), a new severed employee, begins fighting back somehow. The brilliance of the show lies in its disturbing take on office culture with Lumon’s endless hallways, fluorescent lighting, and manipulative corporate practices. The series creates its sense of dread, not just through the narrative but also through this unsettling atmosphere. The mystery is compelling, but the show deepens it by exploring themes of grief, identity, and control. Given Severance’s brilliance, it’s no surprise that it’s one of the most talked-about thriller series of the decade.

‘Squid Game’ (2021–2025)
Squid Game became a worldwide phenomenon almost overnight, but that’s because it told a story that resonated with just about everyone. The series follows Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), a financially desperate chauffeur drowning in debt who is recruited into a mysterious competition alongside hundreds of other struggling people. The contestants are promised an enormous cash prize, but the catch is that losing a game results in instant death.
This twisted survival story only gets darker with each episode and turns into a brutal commentary on capitalism. Every round strips the contestants down emotionally and forces them to betray their allies and abandon morality just to see one more day. What’s worse is that these players are trapped in this system where their fight for survival is entertainment for the wealthy VIPs. Squid Game is one of Netflix’s most successful shows of all time because it explores the darkest parts of the human mind. The show is heavy on shock value, but it always serves the purpose of exposing the cruelty of the system these characters are trapped in.

Earlier this week, major casting news was announced for a new adaptation of Agatha Christie‘s most famous creation: the Hercule Poirot mysteries. The “greatest detective in the world,” it was revealed, will be played by Edward Bluemel in a new BBC and Britbox series, taking over from legendary performers such as David Suchet, Peter Ustinov, and most recently, Kenneth Branagh. Earlier this year, Netflix released Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, based on a nearly century-old novel. Meanwhile, work is underway on an adaptation of Christie’s “Endless Knight.” The “Queen of Crime” remains as popular as ever, and has inspired not only official adaptations such as the ones mentioned above, but also loosely inspired films and shows that take her tightly wound plots and take them into unexpected directions.
None can be further removed from Christie’s tale of aristocratic vengeance and high-society than an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie that would appeal more to the fans of The Rip. The movie in question was inspired by what is arguably Christie’s most popular mystery novel, “And Then There Were None”, in which a group of individuals is eliminated one-by-one by a mysterious murderer. The movie transported the story’s original setting — a remote island — to a crime-infested world of cops and corruption. The film was directed by David Ayer, and it is currently available to stream on Netflix. But if you’re curious to see what a Christie-inspired movie starring the Governator might look like, you might want to hurry.

We’re talking, of course, about Sabotage. In the movie, which was released in 2014, Schwarzenegger plays a DEA agent whose crew is taken out one-by-one after they steal money during a cartel raid. Sabotage underperformed at the box office, grossing around $22 million worldwide against a reported budget of $35 million. It received poor reviews, and is now sitting at a 21% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Sabotage boasts one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s finer post-political performances, but it’s wasted in a movie driven by grueling violence that punishes seemingly without purpose.” Also starring Sam Worthington, Olivia Williams, Joe Manganiello, Mireille Enos, Josh Holloway, and Terrence Howard, the movie will remain available on Netflix until July 1. The couple, both 36, stepped out for a theater date night, attending a performance of Oh, Mary! at New York City’s Lyceum Theatre on Saturday, June 13.
The “Fate of Ophelia” singer and the Kansas City Chiefs tight end arrived discreetly after the show had already begun, but they didn’t go unnoticed by fellow theatergoers.
According to videos shared on social media, the pair laughed together during the show, with Kelce often leaning toward Swift whenever a joke landed.
At one point, the play’s star Maya Rudolph appeared to acknowledge the NFL star’s presence in the crowd by delivering a line about audience members needing to leave for “a game,” prompting an enthusiastic response from Swift.
Swift’s excitement continued through the curtain call.
In footage captured by an audience member, the Grammy winner jumped to her feet and raised her arms high above her head while giving the cast a standing ovation. Kelce followed her lead as the rest of the audience rose to applaud.

11 Years Later, ‘The Gentlemen’ Star’s Sci-Fi Blockbuster Makes a Sudden Streaming Comeback
Guy Ritchie is known as one of the most famous British directors of the 21st century, having defined a genre of crime films and also taken on big-budget Hollywood projects such as the live-action Aladdin remake. However, his work for the small screen is much less recognized, having only worked behind the camera for three TV series. Most recently, Ritchie directed two episodes of Young Sherlock, Prime Video‘s latest adaptation that has already been renewed for Season 2. This followed 2025’s MobLand, with Ritchie again directing two episodes of Tom Hardy and Pierce Brosnan’s hit crime thriller.
However, Ritchie’s best TV work is on The Gentlemen, the Netflix series follow-up to the hugely popular 2019 movie of the same name. Ritchie continued his streak of directing two episodes on the series, whilst also writing two, with fans excited about the second season set to premiere sometime in 2026. Key to the success of The Gentlemen was Theo James, who starred as Eddie Horniman and became a fan-favorite alongside Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales alum Kaya Scodelario‘s Susie Glass.
Ahead of The Gentlemen Season 2, which finished production in October last year, one of star James’ previous projects is an unlikely streaming hit. In 2014, a 30-year-old James made only his fourth feature film appearance alongside Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley in Divergent, the first of three big-screen adaptations of the novels by author Veronica Roth. Sadly, Divergent was panned by most critics, earning a 41% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and getting scolded for being formulaic and shallow. Despite the lack of critical success, Divergent is a streaming hit 12 years later, scoring a place in the list of the ten most-streamed movies on Peacock in the U.S., at the time of writing.

It was clear to everyone that Divergent was attempting to capitalize on the very relevant success of The Hunger Games franchise, but could it reach the high bar set for itself? Unsurprisingly, Divergent was unable to become the YA phenomenon The Hunger Games was in the early-mid 2010s, but it did prove somewhat successful at the box office, scoring a total global haul of $276 million against a reported production budget of $85 million.

Gio, 23, scored a goal during his squad’s qualifying matchup against Paraguay on Friday, June 12, subsequently putting the soccer ball underneath his shirt — mimicking a pregnancy — and pretending to suck his thumb.
“Thank you LA! Love this team! Just the start! 🇺🇸,” he wrote via Instagram later that night, reflecting on the team’s 4-1 victory. “Celebration was for the little one on the way 👶🏻🙌🏼.”

Alfonso Cuarón took over as the director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which was released in 2004; Mike Newell directed Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which premiered theatrically in 2005. The subsequent four films — the final book was split into two adaptations — were all directed by David Yates. The Days Are Numbered for the Harry Potter Movies on HBO Max and Peacock
Sadly, on July 1, all eight movies will be removed from HBO Max and Peacock domestically. HBO Max will also lose the three Fantastic Beasts spin-offs, which were all directed by Yates but deemed unworthy of being counted as part of the mainline series. The Harry Potter stories, written by the controversial J.K. Rowling, are now being rebooted for an ambitious HBO television adaptation that will debut with its first season in December. HBO has already released a trailer for the series, which is expected to be the biggest scripted small-screen event of the year. The eight movies, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, are available to stream on Peacock and HBO Max for the rest of June. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.

Claire Danes is revealing her initial thoughts about an ongoing and somewhat controversial trend among actors — experiencing extreme physical transformations to better embody a character or role.
“I don’t know if it’s ever been necessary for me to transform in such an extreme way,” Danes, 47, told fellow actor Richard Gadd while participating in Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors series. “Some roles are more remote than others, and I do have to apply myself with a bit more rigor in putting them together. Those are the most rewarding, really — high risk, high-reward.”
She continued, “I resent them initially and then I’m so grateful and I find the most freedom within them. Sometimes it’s quite stressful to play somebody who is super familiar, who you overlap with.”
Gadd, 37, is currently experiencing his own personal physical transformation for his role as Ruben in Half Man, the writer-director-actor’s followup story to his Netflix hit, Baby Reindeer. Gadd reportedly gained 90 pounds to embody the hyper-masculine and toxic character.

“I like to try and change as much as I possibly can for a role,” Gadd said while appearing on Vanity Fair’s In Character video series. “I always wanted Ruben to be real. I never wanted him to have a sort of Hollywood six-pack.”
He added, “The show kind of sets out to explore why are men drawn to each other in such complicated and mutually empowering, yet mutually destructive ways. I thought, ‘Well, for something to be toxic, it has to be intoxicating first.”

While speaking to Danes, Gadd revealed the weight difference between his Half Man character Ruben Pallister and his Baby Reindeer character, Donny Dunn.
“Donny Dunn was like 68.8 kilograms [151 pounds]. Ruben at my heaviest was 110 [242 pounds]. I wanted it to be real, so a lot of it was putting a lot of fat on top of the muscles,” he explained. “It’s quite helpful, because as the character, you feel physically imposing, and Jamie Bell’s very petite. When I was acting with him, I could almost ingest him, I was so much bigger than him. It helped in that respect. I like that because — I don’t know about you. I hate feeling like myself on set.”
He continued, “They’ll put you in a shirt and you go to set and I’m like, ‘I still feel like myself.’ So how do I feel like a character in my body? I like to feel different. I wouldn’t say it’s Method or anything. I just like to feel the physicality, whether it’s frail or big.”

Danes, for her part, is playing a grieving mother named Agatha Wiggs in the TV miniseries The Beast in Me. Gadd admitted to Danes that he learned the art of the “guttural sob” by watching Danes’ Romeo + Juliet performance.
“I’ll tell you a little fact. Back at school, to get us to learn Shakespeare, we watched Romeo + Juliet. I remember writing an essay on Romeo + Juliet,” he told Danes. “I remember so clearly an amazing bit you do in that where you wake up and Romeo’s dead, and you do this amazing guttural sob. I remember writing paragraphs about that sob and how impactful it was.”
“You saw my guttural sob, and you raised it,” Danes responded. “I remember that moment very distinctly. I was surprised by it. I remember the shock of the discovery and being startled by my response, which is what we hope for. It doesn’t always happen.”
After quickly emerging as a breakout in HBO’s Girls, Adam Driver landed the role of a lifetime in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. He played Kylo Ren in three movies that collectively grossed more than $5 billion worldwide and made him a globally recognizable figure. However, he has pointedly stayed away from mainstream projects for the majority of his career, choosing instead to work on a string of movies directed by Jim Jarmusch, Noah Baumbach, and Steven Soderbergh. However, there’s one movie that sticks out in Driver’s filmography even more than the romantic comedy The F Word.
The movie in question was released in 2023, when Driver presumably had complete freedom to pick his projects. By then, Driver had already begun a rather unique streak of starring in movies that had been stuck in development hell for decades — Martin Scorsese‘s Silence, Terry Gilliam‘s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, Michael Mann‘s Ferrari, and more recently, Francis Ford Coppola‘s Megalopolis. The 2017 film, a sci-fi action-thriller, was directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who’d broken out as the original writers of A Quiet Place before that franchise was taken over by John Krasinski. Beck and Woods would go on to make the sleeper hit horror movie Heretic, starring Hugh Grant and Sophie Thatcher.

But before that, the directors tried their hand at a studio sci-fi spectacle with Driver. The movie in question is 65, in which Driver stars as an astronaut who crash-lands on a prehistoric Earth populated by dinosaurs. The movie underperformed at the box office, grossing $60 million worldwide against a reported budget of $45 million. It received mediocre reviews, and is now sitting at a 35% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The site’s consensus reads, “Sodden sci-fi that somehow finds a way to bungle Adam Driver fighting dinosaurs, 65 is closer to zero.” The movie is currently streaming on HBO Max in the United States, but will be removed from the platform on July 1. Driver, meanwhile, is back doing what he does best. He’ll soon be seen as part of the A-list ensemble of James Gray‘s new movie, Paper Tiger, along with Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller. Aldon Smith, a former San Francisco 49ers linebacker, has died. He was 36.
The 49ers released an official statement via X on Saturday, June 13, to confirm the news.
“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith,” the statement read. “Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen.”
The organization continued, “Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon.”

Shocked fans responded to the news by sharing their devastation over the sport star’s untimely death.
“Damn rip i was just watching his highlights weeks back, damn man,” wrote one X user, while another added, “36 is too damn young!! Rest easy Aldon.”
Another wrote, “So tragic, sad. He was an incredible player.”
Smith was selected by the 49ers with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft and quickly established himself as one of football’s most feared pass rushers. During his first two seasons in the league, he recorded 33.5 sacks across 32 regular-season games.

His breakout rookie campaign earned him second place in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting in 2011. The following season, Smith was named a first-team All-Pro and earned a Pro Bowl selection after helping lead San Francisco to one of the NFL’s top defenses.
Smith also started in Super Bowl XLVII, where the 49ers faced the Baltimore Ravens in February 2013.
Despite his success on the field, Smith’s NFL career was marred by a series of off-field issues. In 2014, he served a nine-game suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.
The 49ers released Smith in August 2015 following a DUI arrest. He later signed with the Oakland Raiders and appeared in nine games during the 2015 season, making seven starts.
After Week 10 of that campaign, Smith was suspended indefinitely by the NFL. The suspension sidelined him for the entirety of the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
Smith’s career was further derailed by more off-field issues, including a 2018 arrest on a domestic violence charge that led to his release from the Raiders.
He returned to the NFL with the Cowboys in 2020, starting all 16 games and recording 5.0 sacks. Smith later signed with the Seahawks during the 2021 offseason but was released before the start of the regular season.
