Done With Star Trek? Try These Other Gene Roddenberry SF Shows

After the travesty that has been Starfleet Academy, Star Trek fans are abandoning the franchise and looking for something else to watch. The good news is that if you love Gene Roddenberry’s work, you have alternatives.
Beyond two of his greatest creations, Star Trek’s original series and then later The Next Generation, there is a wealth of ideas that weren’t directly part of the Star Trek universe. Two other sci-fi shows were created from his notes and storyboards. His widow, Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, known to fans as Lwaxana Troi and Nurse Chapel, helped produce both series.
Earth: Final Conflict Was Intended As A Film, But Became A 1990s TV Series
Earth: Final Conflict was created by Gene Roddenberry following the cancellation of the original series of Star Trek in 1969. Initially titled Battleground: Earth, it was intended to be a film, but the project never materialized, even after studios expressed interest. This was in great part due to Roddenberry’s scheduling conflicts with Star Trek. Although the show never materialized in his lifetime, it was brought to life in 1997, six years after Roddenberry died.
In Earth: Final Conflict, an alien race called the Taelons have come to Earth offering to help humanity with its problems, especially in the medical fields. We are introduced to William Boone, security for an important public announcement that is interrupted by a business tycoon’s assassination.
As more people die around him, Boone reluctantly agrees to become a Protector for the Companions, a human security agent supported by alien biotechnology. Meanwhile, he is also asked to join an underground resistance fighting behind the scenes for human sovereignty against the Taelons.
The series never paints the Taelons as being entirely good or bad. Many Taelons want to help, while others use humanity as a means to an end.
Earth: Final Conflict was a departure from Roddenberry’s usual fare because the aliens were not always as capable of evil acts as humans, and their interference with human life wasn’t always helpful, even when benevolent. It looked at both the immense potential of alien technology while also highlighting the dark side of interaction with more advanced, intelligent extraterrestrials.
Over the course of five seasons, most clearly at the end of the first season, with the death of an important character that received a bad reaction, fans learned not to get attached to characters, as something always seemed to happen to them. This was in part due to behind-the-scenes issues, including contract disputes and conflicts between actors and producers, leading to serious problems and uneven content.
The last season had the greatest change, as the plot and tone shifted away from the Taelons to the arrival of a new alien race, which ran it into the weeds. Roddenberry wasn’t around to elaborate on his notes, and his vision for Earth: Final Conflict could not continue without him.
Andromeda Is Gene Roddenberry’s Other Space Show
Five seasons is a respectable run, and that success led to another of Roddenberry’s creations being posthumously brought to life. It’s called Andromeda.
Set in the sixth millennium, a much more distant future than Star Trek has ever operated in, Andromeda stars Kevin Sorbo, fresh from Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. He plays Dylan Hunt, captain of the flagship of the Commonwealth fleet, the Andromeda Ascendant. The ship is run by a sentient AI named Rommie, played by sci-fi legend Lexi Doig.
The Commonwealth, similar to the Federation, has fallen, and Hunt has been asleep for 303 years. When he wakes up, he meets the rest of the main cast, a group of scavengers, led by Earth: Final Conflict actress Lisa Ryder, fighting for survival in the galactic dark age that followed the collapse of the Commonwealth. Over the course of five seasons, we follow along as Dylan Hunt and the crew of the Andromeda fight to restore the Commonwealth.
Like Earth: Final Conflict, Andromeda had its own issues behind the scenes. Mixed-to-negative reviews followed the show throughout its run. An upheaval in production in the middle of the second season led to showrunners changing due to pacing and character issues.
Rather than exploring the potential of a world where “Starfleet” has fallen, the production company, Tribune Entertainment, wanted more episodic content and more focus on the character of Sorbo’s Dylan Hunt character, essentially making it “Hercules in Space.” It wasn’t all bad, though, as each of its five seasons had 22 episodes, and it was nominated for 39 awards.
Gene Roddenberry’s Legacy Endures Despite NuTrek’s Best Efforts To Kill It
Andromeda and Earth: Final Conflict highlight the enduring power and legacy of Gene Roddenberry. Even after his death, his original creative works, aside from Star Trek, were still being produced by his surviving family and estate.
While the effects on these older shows might be dated and some of the acting iffy in spots, sci-fi fans can still enjoy these hidden gems. They’re better Roddenberry productions than most of what Paramount churned out in the NuTrek™ era, and they’re both free on Tubi.

PEOPLE exclusively learned that Newport is dating 32-year-old model Brandon Good. This comes months after it was announced that she and Bradley were no longer together. An insider told the outlet, “They’ve been seeing each other for a few weeks. It’s new, but they’re enjoying getting to know one another. Bronwyn’s really happy.”
The two went out publicly together on February 2 to see Chicago on Broadway, in which “Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” star Whitney Leavitt is currently appearing as Roxi Hart. The outlet reports that Good posted a photo of himself and Newport on Instagram Stories after the Broadway show, captioned, “Date night, Chicago Broadway opening.” They were also seen at the after-party.

The ‘RHOSLC’ Star Confirmed Her Separation In December
Newport had been open on “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” about the problems in her marriage to Bradley. Because of this, fans of the show weren’t shocked in December 2025 when PEOPLE reported that they were no longer together. A representative for Newport confirmed the news with the outlet.
They said that “after thoughtful consideration, Bronwyn Newport and Todd Bradley have separated. This was a mutual decision made with care and respect for one another. They ask for privacy during this time.”

The confirmation came after Newport discussed her marriage on the show. She said during season six, “The real truth is that my relationship is just as hard as everybody else’s in its own ways and has had its very low lows that were very hard for me. This is a side of me that these ladies haven’t yet seen, but I want them to understand that I bleed the same way that they all do. I cry about things, and that side of me is there if they’re open to it.”

For the most part, social media users seem to support the lifestyle change for the reality TV star. The Reality Star Recently Spoke About Her Separation
Newport opened up in January 2026 about her separation from Bradley in an interview with PEOPLE, revealing that they’re still sharing their home. She said, “We might be the only people in the world who don’t have young children who are nesting. But we’re doing it for our dogs.” Notably, the estranged couple shares four dogs, all boxers.
Regarding the decision to separate from Bradley, she stated that it came after she went to BravoCon 2025 without him. According to her, “It was maybe the first time that I felt like if he wasn’t [in my life], I was going to be okay. It was just this pressure point of trying to explain this life that I was living to him when he was not there, and he wasn’t understanding it.”
She added that after they talked, she “felt okay and happy and fine and like there were things for me in the future.”

The ‘RHOSLC’ Star Recently Opened Up About Season 7 Casting
Season six of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” ended in January 2026. Now, fans are making their guesses regarding which of the ladies will return for season seven. Newport appeared on Peacock’s Reality Hot Seat NFL Crossover in December 2025 and revealed who she would cut from the series.
After being asked for her take, she said, “I would say going into next season, I might bench Meredith. I think we just saw more from everybody else this season, like personal, home life, I like that.”

As The Shade Room previously reported, NLE Choppa recently found himself in headlines two weeks ago. This, when the mother of his eldest child, Mariah, alleged that CPS was called over his care of their daughter, Clover. At the time, NLE alleged that two weeks ago was the first time he had seen his daughter since September 2025. In short, Mariah accused NLE of failing to feed Clover, take her to school, and even implied that she may have suffered sexual abuse while in NLE’s care.
Afterward, NLE shared a few tweets about being done taking the “high road.”
Then, he released a new song called ‘Set The Record Straight,’ calling out Mariah and Marissa Da’Nae, the mother of his son, Chozen.
But Mariah and Da’Nae weren’t the only ones to catch shots in NLE’s songs. Apparently, Blueface noticed that he caught a stray, too.
Then, Blue appeared to send a shot back NLE’s way with a caption shared online.

Later that day, NLE took to his Instagram Story to share now-deleted clips where he suggested that Blueface’s son and either of his sons, Chozen or Icon, lay hands on one another. However, as his speech went on, he seemingly appeared to be speaking about Chrisean Jr., noting that the child may not be able to “hold” his “head up” properly. Additionally, NLE noted that he wouldn’t squabble with Blueface because he believes Blue would benefit from the opportunity and use it to pay off his alleged debts.

Berry sat down for an interview with The Cut, where she talked about her recent project, her romantic life, and her career. The conversation touched on her Oscar win in 2002, where she won the award for Best Actress for her role in the movie “Monster’s Ball.”
Berry was the first Black actress to win the Best Actress award at the Oscars since its inception in 1929, and no Black actress has won since. According to her, she assumed the coveted award would change her career’s trajectory, but that didn’t happen.
As she told the publication, “I thought there was going to be, like, a script truck showing up outside my front door. While I was wildly proud of it, I was still Black that next morning.”

She explained that directors still had discussions about casting Black actors in lead roles and questioning what that would do to the story. “Then it’s a Black movie. Black movies don’t sell overseas,” the actress said.

Her Moving Oscars Speech
At the 74th Academy Awards in 2002, Berry was up against Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Sissy Spacek, and Reneé Zellweger for the Best Actress award. When she was announced as the winner, she was visibly surprised and shaken.
In her speech, she dedicated her win to some notable Black women in the industry, adding, “It’s for every nameless, faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened.”
In an interview with Variety in 2020, however, she said winning the award was one of her “biggest heartbreaks.” The “Gothika” actress now questions whether her win was really an essential moment for Black women or just for her, referring to the fact that no other Black women have won the award since.

“I was just continuing to forge a way out of no way,” she added. As she shared with The Cut, she told Cynthia Erivo, who had been nominated three times for an Oscar, that she deserved to win, “but I don’t know that it’s going to change your life.”

Halle Berry’s Reflections Were Shared In A Documentary
Last year, the documentary “Number One on the Call Sheet” was released on Apple TV+. In it, Berry looked back at what happened after her win, per The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s forced me to ask myself, did it matter? Did it really change anything for women of color? For my sisters? For our journey?”
As she shared in the documentary, she thought there was a big chance for a Black actress to win at the 2021 Oscars, with both Andra Day and Viola Davis nominated for Best Actress. Still, the award ultimately went to Frances McDormand. “For equally different and beautiful reasons, they both deserved it, and I thought for sure,” Berry said.
“The system is not really designed for us, and so we have to stop coveting that which is not for us,” Berry explained, adding that what’s more critical is touching the lives of people through art.

She Also Won A Golden Raspberry Award
The Academy Awards may celebrate the best, but the Golden Raspberry Awards, also called the Razzies, highlight the worst. The latter was founded as a parody of the Oscars, with the first ceremony held in 1981.
While Berry has won an Oscar, she has also won a Razzie. There are only a few celebrities who personally accept their Razzie award, and Berry was one of them. In 2005, she received her Worst Actress award for her portrayal of Patience Phillips, aka Catwoman, in the movie “Catwoman.”
“First of all, I want to thank Warner Bros. Thank you for putting me in a piece of sh-t, God-awful movie,” she told the laughing crowd. She then called out her manager for convincing her to do “sh-t” projects.
Berry was a good sport, and as she told The Cut, “I’ve always known that Oscar didn’t make me the best, just like that Razzie doesn’t make me the worst.”

Halle Berry Is Content In Her ‘Second Act’
Nearing 60 years old, Berry said that she is content in what she calls her “second act.” While she is still active in the entertainment industry, she has also launched a company called Respin.
Repsin is a program focused on menopause care, something that Berry feels is necessary for older women who feel “marginalized” and “devalued.”
“That’s why I’m on my menopause mission. I’m going to be louder than I have ever been,” the actress said.

Ashleigh Banfield x Drop Dead Serious
There’s a stunning twist in the kidnapping of ‘TODAY’ anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mother Nancy … her son-in-law might be the prime suspect, according to Ashleigh Banfield.
Banfield — the former host of Banfield on NewsNation — reported Tuesday night … Tommaso Cioni has been identified by police as the possible suspect in the case, citing a trusted law enforcement source.
The veteran journalist says Cioni is married to Savannah’s sister Annie — and the two were the last people to see Nancy on Saturday night. Annie reportedly had dinner with Nancy that night … but it’s unclear if Cioni was also present.
As you know, Nancy’s family called police Sunday after they got word she didn’t show up to her regular Sunday church service.
Now, Banfield says investigators have towed Annie’s car, which has “some connection” to 50-year-old Cioni. Banfield adds that all the cameras at Nancy’s Tucson, Arizona home were smashed in.

Earlier Tuesday, NewsNation published a video showing a trail of blood leading to the front steps of Nancy’s house. The Los Angeles Times also reports that blood was found at the crime scene, which belonged to Nancy.
TMZ was sent an alleged ransom note from an unknown person or persons who demanded payment in exchange for Nancy’s release. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI are investigating whether the note is authentic.

Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman’s stepson Gregory Zecca is facing life behind bars if convicted of aggravated manslaughter after fatally shooting his teenage son.
Florida’s Collier County Sheriff’s Office posted an update on the July 2025 incident via Facebook on Tuesday, February 3, stating that Zecca accidentally shot his child, Anthony, 13, in the family’s Naples, Florida, apartment while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Local Southwest Florida news outlet WINK News was first to report on the update.
Per the Sheriff’s Office, Zecca, 39, was taken into custody “on a warrant for aggravated manslaughter of a child with a firearm and using a firearm while under the influence,” which could result in a life sentence.
A Collier County police investigation into Zecca, who is the son of Dog’s wife, Francie Chapman, from a previous marriage, found that Zecca allegedly “consumed alcohol over several hours at a local establishment, purchased more alcohol, and later used both alcohol and marijuana at a friend’s residence.”

Zecca and his son were “watching a UFC fight on TV at the time.”
Law enforcement also reported that Zecca “repeatedly handled a firearm in his son’s presence, practicing drawing it from his waistband and dry-firing.” The firearm had “initially been made safe by removing the magazine and clearing a live round from the chamber.”
Further detail stated that the magazine was put back into the firearm before Zecca “discharged a single shot” that struck Anthony.
Sheriff Kevin Rambosk stated in the update that the event “was a heartbreaking and preventable tragedy.”

Rambosk added, “Our detectives conducted an exhaustive and thorough investigation, examining every element of what happened through witness statements, forensic testing, subpoenas, search warrants, and more.”
Police officials also noted that deputies who arrived at the scene “detected the odor of alcohol on Zecca and observed marijuana in plain view.”
A subsequent toxicology report estimated Zecca’s “blood-alcohol concentration to be approximately 0.116 at the time of the shooting, above Florida’s legal limit of 0.08.”
Zecca was placed on a psychiatric hold following the shooting. A family representative told TMZ one day after the incident occurred that Zecca was “under observation on a 5150 hold,” which meant that he had been involuntarily detained for 72 hours after being deemed “a danger to themselves, to others, or gravely disabled,” per Clear Behavior Health.

The rep also told the outlet at the time that the hold was instigated because Zecca was “overcome with grief” and not because he felt guilty of a crime.
Dog released a statement via the outlet in the shooting’s aftermath. “We are grieving as a family over this incomprehensible tragic accident and would ask for continued prayers as we grieve the loss of our beloved grandson, Anthony,” Dog and Francie both wrote at the time.
Zecca also disabled his Instagram account after the incident. Prior to the account’s disappearance, Zecca had posted photos of himself with Anthony, including one image that showed the pair at a shooting range.
