Forget Nolan’s The Odyssey, We Already Have A Killer Greek Epic
By Robert Scucci
| Published

With Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey fast approaching, it’s time to get back into all of the great historical epics that have come out over the years. Gladiator (2000) is always a no-brainer thanks to Russell Crowe’s magnetic performance as Maximus Decimus Meridius, and if you want to channel your inner Spartan while a single tear runs down your cheek because you’re 37 and need to accept the fact that you’re never getting the abs back, you can fire up 300 (2007) to get your fill. Between those two films, though, is a little $185 million historical epic called Troy (2004), which wasn’t exactly a critical darling upon release (53 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), but has remained a fan favorite for decades.
Here’s the thing about historical epics based on Ancient Greek mythology: they almost always lose points for not properly representing the source material. But here’s my counterpoint: this is a movie, everybody speaks American English, and our main hero’s weakness is his heel because his mother dunked him upside down in the River Styx to make him immortal, but the water didn’t touch the spot where she was holding him. In other words, let’s suspend some disbelief, watch some epic battles, and enjoy the show.
I’m No Scholar, But Troy Is Badass

I hate long movies that don’t earn their runtime, but Troy is built differently because it fully commits to spectacle. There are plenty of names being said out loud that made me think, “Oh, that’s how you pronounce that, I’ve only ever read it before,” followed immediately by enough cinematic violence to distract me from the fact that I should probably brush up on both my history and my phonics.
Here’s the short and sweet version of what happens in Troy because, if I’m being real, I’m not watching this one for the plot. I’m watching it to see thousands of extras get leveled while armies wage war against each other and burn everything to the ground.

After Paris (Orlando Bloom), a prince of Troy, sparks a forbidden romance with Helen (Diane Kruger), the wife of Spartan King Menelaus, tensions between the two kingdoms explode into all-out war. The Greek armies unite under the ambitious Agamemnon (Brian Cox), bringing along their greatest warrior, Achilles (Brad Pitt), whose legendary fighting skills are matched only by his pride and ego. As Troy braces for invasion, noble prince Hector (Eric Bana) struggles to defend his family and city from destruction. What follows is a massive clash driven by love, revenge, ambition, and the pursuit of glory during a time when nothing else really mattered.
Beyond Epic In Scope And Scale
Filmed during that sweet spot in movie history where CGI enhanced a film instead of completely replacing practical filmmaking, Troy never feels like a green screen experience. Sure, digital effects were used to fill out backgrounds with massive armies and sprawling naval fleets, but the production still relied on thousands of extras swinging rubber swords during combat sequences so everybody could safely hack away at each other with reckless, military-sanctioned abandon. It’s even been reported that Brad Pitt and Eric Bana spent days rehearsing their final duel without stunt doubles to make sure audiences got the best fight sequence money could buy.

Speaking of Brad Pitt, his portrayal of Achilles is second to none. He brings a certain level of nonchalance to the role, like he’s a party guy who just so happens to be exceptionally gifted at war. He’s untouchable and unflappable, and he commands the screen whenever he shows up while channeling serious dude-bro energy anytime somebody asks anything of him. When we’re first introduced to him, he effortlessly kills Boagrius (Nathan Jones), a giant hulk of a man, while violently hungover and not even having eaten breakfast yet. It’s poetry in sandals, and it’s ridiculously fun to watch play out.
For every bit of charisma in Troy, however, there’s also a healthy amount of corn you need to chew through. The most egregious moment, to me, is when Ajax lets out his battle cry in the middle of combat, bellowing, “I am Ajax, breaker of stones! Look upon me in despair!” Don’t get me wrong, that’s an objectively badass thing to say, but Troy is set in 1184 BC and he delivers the line like he knows there’s a camera crew behind him and he wants to sound as cool as humanly possible. Moments like that can take me out of movies like Troy, but it’s also worth mentioning that this is still an incredible quote to casually work into real life whenever the opportunity presents itself.

In 2026, Troy’s legacy has far exceeded its initial reputation, which is reflected in its much stronger 74 percent Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics may have gone hard on this movie at the time, but it’s also worth remembering that critics don’t always know how to have fun. Troy is fun. It’s pure popcorn spectacle wrapped in armor, and if you’re looking for next-level fight choreography and carnage, it really doesn’t get much better than this.

As of this writing, Troy is not available through standard streaming subscriptions, but it can be rented or purchased on demand through Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Fandango at Home, and Apple TV+.

Jason Biggs and Jenny Mollen Quietly Separate
Jason Biggs and Jenny Mollen have quietly decided to end their marriage after nearly two decades together.
While the news is sure to surprise many longtime fans of the couple, insiders insist there is no major feud or messy fallout behind the separation.
Instead, sources say the two remain deeply connected and committed to keeping their family bond strong as they move forward separately.

A representative for the couple confirmed to PEOPLE on Thursday, May 14, that Jason Biggs and Jenny Mollen have officially separated after 18 years of marriage.
Despite ending their relationship, the former couple reportedly remains on “great terms” while prioritizing the well-being of their two sons, Sid, 12, and Lazlo, 8.
According to a source close to the pair, the split has not created hostility between them.
“They are very much connected,” the insider said while discussing Biggs and Mollen’s future as coparents. “I have no doubt that they will remain on excellent terms.”
The source also shared that the two recently spent time together as a family for Biggs’ 48th birthday on May 12.
Mollen and Biggs reportedly “are doing great” despite deciding to go their separate ways romantically.
Jason Biggs And Jenny Mollen Built A Private Family Life
Biggs and Mollen first met while working together on the 2008 film “My Best Friend’s Girl.”
Their romance moved quickly afterward. The pair became engaged in January 2008 and quietly eloped only a few months later, in April.
Later that same year, they celebrated again with a second wedding ceremony in Napa, California, attended by roughly 40 guests.
Over the years, the couple largely avoided turning their marriage into a public spectacle.
Unlike many celebrity families, they rarely placed their children at the center of social media attention and kept much of their personal life away from headlines.
Still, Mollen occasionally shared glimpses into their relationship online. In November 2025, she posted a photo alongside Biggs and jokingly captioned it, “A totally approachable couple not trying to seduce you.”
Months earlier, she celebrated Biggs’ 47th birthday with another heartfelt Instagram tribute featuring a black-and-white photo of them embracing.
“We were married and yet I still knew practically nothing about you. Like for example, the fact that you hate surprises. Luckily, we made it past that hurdle,” she wrote at the time. “Happy 47th, I promise I planned nothing.”
Biggs And Mollen Celebrated Their Anniversary Months Ago
Only weeks before news of the split surfaced publicly, Jenny Mollen had also shared a touching anniversary post celebrating their years together.
In April 2025, she uploaded a collection of playful family videos showing Jason Biggs spending time with their children and acting goofy around the house.
“17 years of this. Happy Anniversary @biggsjason,” she captioned the post.
At the time, there were no public signs suggesting the couple had already begun drifting apart.
For years, fans viewed Biggs and Mollen as one of Hollywood’s more unconventional but stable celebrity marriages.
Their relationship often blended humor, honesty, and chaotic parenting moments that many followers found relatable.
‘American Pie’ Fame Changed Jason Biggs’ Career Forever

While Biggs’ personal life is now back in the headlines, the actor recently made news for revisiting one of the most iconic moments of his acting career.
Earlier this year, Biggs appeared on the “Pod Meets World” podcast and reflected on filming the famous pie scene from the 1999 comedy “American Pie.”
In the movie, Biggs played awkward teenager Jim Levenstein, whose disastrous encounter with a warm apple pie became one of the most recognizable comedy scenes of its era.
During the podcast interview, Biggs explained that the production team experimented with multiple versions of the scene during filming.
“It was scripted, I think, standing up, but we said, you know what? What if I was actually on the countertop, mounting the pie? Like, that would be funny. Why don’t we try that too?” he recalled.
According to Biggs, early versions of the scene repeatedly triggered an NC-17 rating from the Motion Picture Association.
Biggs Reveals What Saved ‘American Pie’

Jason Biggs explained that filmmakers struggled to avoid the restrictive rating despite attempting several edits to the sequence.
Even changing the setup of the scene reportedly failed to solve the problem.
According to the actor, the final issue came down to one surprisingly specific detail.
“So ultimately, that was the big fight. It wasn’t over f words… It was the number of thrusts into the pie,” Biggs shared.
He revealed that reducing the number of thrusts from three to two was ultimately what allowed the movie to receive an R rating instead of NC-17.
The film went on to become a massive cultural phenomenon and turned Biggs into one of the biggest comedy stars of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

After the news surfaced, Breezy stepped in and set the record straight. He told fans he was confused because he was at home and never heard police sirens or gunshots. In an Instagram Story message, he said he was tired of the narratives, but refused to let anything distract him from his craft.

Taylor Swift’s Bodyguard Drops Hint About Wedding Dress
Another clue about what Taylor Swift could wear for her upcoming nuptials to Travis Kelce may have just surfaced.
With months away from the reported date for the “Blank Space” hitmaker and the NFL star to tie the knot, speculation surrounding the ceremony has continued to grow, especially over what gown Swift will choose for the big day.
As fans keep guessing which fashion house the Grammy-winning artist may wear, her bodyguard may have accidentally revealed a major hint.

On Thursday, a member of Swift’s security team was spotted outside her home carrying a large Stella McCartney garment bag along with a matching designer tote, per The Daily Mail.
The sighting would undoubtedly fuel more speculation about the 36-year-old singer’s bridal outfit. However, while the designer behind the gown for her special day has not been confirmed, insiders claim the look is inspired by the dress worn by Elizabeth Taylor when she married Conrad Hilton in 1950.
The pop star was said to have become fascinated with Taylor’s timeless Hollywood elegance while working on a song inspired by the late actress for her latest album, “The Life Of A Showgirl.”
According to insiders, Swift admired the gown’s classic shape, fitted waist, and delicate lace details, which she found elegant and flattering.
Could Taylor Swift’s Bodyguard Be Carrying A Decoy?

While Swift’s security team was spotted with the dress bag from the British fashion house, it remains unclear whether the sighting was a mistake, considering the lengths the singer has gone to keep her bridal looks private.
A source familiar with the arrangements claimed the “Bad Blood” singer commissioned six different gowns.
Although that may seem like Swift simply wanted multiple options, another insider alleged the move was actually part of a strategy to prevent details from getting out before the big reveal.
“Some of the dresses are deliberate decoys,” the insider said, per The Blast. “The goal is to confuse people, stop leaks, and make sure nobody figures out the real look ahead of time.” They added that the designers contracted were under strict NDA’s.
Inside Taylor Swift’s Unconventional Wedding Arrangements Amid Security Concerns

As part of Swift’s emphasis on privacy amid leaks of her plans, she reportedly wants to hold two separate events for her nuptials.
According to The Blast, the couple wants one large, highly protected public celebration in Rhode Island and a second, far more intimate ceremony away from public attention.
The reported change in plans is said to arise from growing security worries and constant disclosures surrounding the event. In an effort to protect their privacy, the pair reportedly even left the venue off invitations sent to guests.
“There’s a date – but no venue,” one insider revealed, stressing that the left-out detail is all part of the plan.
How Taylor Swift Reportedly Felt On ‘Edge’ About Wedding Plans Leak

Despite carefully guarding details of her celebration, the fact that the plans have still found their way into the public eye has reportedly left Swift feeling unsettled.
At one point, she was even said to have considered scrapping the arrangements entirely and starting over.
Those close to the artist revealed she was thrilled at the thought of finally sharing the day with the love of her life, but the planning of the event, while under scrutiny, has her on “edge.”
They added that the singer has always been meticulous and fiercely protective of her private world, so seeing her choices exposed before she’s ready has “shaken her confidence,” per The Blast.
The Lovebirds Recently Enjoyed A Romantic London Getaway

Ahead of their walk down the aisle, Swift and the Kansas City Chiefs star have continued making time for romantic trips, including a recent visit to London.
As The Blast recently reported, Travis spoke about the trip during an episode of his podcast with brother Jason Kelce. The NFL player gushed about the city, saying, “London is fun,” and added that the trip included great food and nights at the theater.
He recalled that they attended a performance of “Romeo & Juliet” before praising the film’s cast. Their London adventure didn’t stop there, as reports disclosed they also joined Poppy Delevingne’s 40th birthday bash and dined at Gordon Ramsay’s Lucky Cat restaurant.

“I have been leaning on him,” Colletti said in May. “I’ve been watching him forge the path of fatherhood, and I’ve been so impressed with what he and [his wife] Alex together have been doing. It’s just so cool to see your best friends go through that journey and to be right behind them and getting excited here for my wife and I.”

Michael Jackson’s Nephew Says Dad Tito Was Called ‘Worthless’
Michael Jackson‘s nephew, Taj Jackson, opened up about father Tito Jackson’s self-esteem struggles as a member of the Jackson 5.
Taj, 52, replied to a fan via X who asked why the other members of the Jackson 5 were “not successful” after Michael went solo.
“I’ll answer since this is a very sensitive subject to me,” Taj wrote on Thursday, May 14. “Imagine since you were a teenager being told by everyone that you are worthless without your younger brother and you should thank him for everything you have.”
Taj continued, “That’s exactly what my dad had to deal with his whole life. He told me that personally on multiple occasions. What do you think that does to your self-esteem and life?”
Tito was a founding member of the Jackson 5 alongside brothers Michael, Jackie, Jermaine and Marlon. Tito’s passion for music inspired the group to get together in 1964 under the management of their father, Joe Jackson.
The Jackson 5 made history as one of the first African American performers to become popular in the mainstream. After signing with Motown Records, they achieved multiple No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 charts including “I Want You Back,” “ABC,” “The Love You Save” and “I’ll Be There.” The group became one of the best-selling artists of all-time as they sold 150 million records worldwide. In 1997, the Jackson 5 was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Amid their popularity, several members of the Jackson 5 attempted solo careers, but Michael’s effort was the most fruitful, resulting in 13 Grammy Awards.
Jermaine left the group first in 1976. While Michael was releasing solo music while still performing with the band, he decided to leave the Jackson 5 in 1984 after the success of “Thriller.”
Following Michael’s departure, Marlon left shortly after. Tito and Jackie released one final album as a group in 1989. In 2003, Tito went solo and earned three Grammy nominations.
After Michael’s death in 2009, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon got back together with the hopes of planning a reunion tour. The tour came to fruition in 2012.
Tito died in September 2024 after suffering a heart attack. Tito’s sons confirmed the death of their father via an Instagram statement.
“It’s with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved father, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tito Jackson is no longer with us,” the siblings wrote alongside a series of photos of their father over the years. “We are shocked, saddened and heartbroken. Our father was an incredible man who cared about everyone and their well-being.”

Laguna Beach Cast: Where Are They Now?
One year after the success of Fox’s The O.C., MTV took a look at the actual town, launching Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County in 2004.
The reality show focused on the personal lives of then-high schoolers Stephen Colletti, Lauren Conrad, Kristin Cavallari, Lo Bosworth and more. Laguna Beach was originally set to be a high school drama but was not allowed to film inside the actual high school, meaning that it was completely shifted to focus on the cast’s home life.
Conrad led the first season as the narrator, as the main storyline focused on a love triangle she found herself in with Cavallari and Colletti. In season 2, Conrad went away to college, with Cavallari taking over as the narrator. When her season ended, a new group was introduced but fell flat without the series’ original cast.

‘Lincoln Lawyer’ Fans Turn to Nearly 30-Year-Old Legal Thriller 1 Day After Cancellation News
This summer is stacked with great movies. From Tom Holland’s return to the web in Spider-Man: Brand New Day to the fifth installment in the beloved Disney and Pixar franchise Toy Story, there is something for everyone. However, no more is more hotly anticipated — in spite of its divisive trailer — than The Odyssey. Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s classical epic is scheduled to hit theaters on July 17, 2026, earning over 23,000 tickets for IMAX 70mm screenings almost a year ago in an unprecedented early haul.
After first appearing in Nolan’s 2014 effort Interstellar, Matt Damon played a crucial role in the multi-Academy Award-winning Oppenheimer in 2023. Now he is set to lead one of the great director’s movies in his most ambitious project yet. Damon is joined in a stacked Odyssey line-up by the likes of the aforementioned Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Charlize Theron as Calypso, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, and Benny Safdie.
Before The Odyssey sails onto our theatrical shores, another Damon-led adaptation, albeit one that was first released almost three decades ago, is a surprise streaming hit. The 1997 adaptation of John Grisham‘s novel The Rainmaker starred the likes of Damon, Mickey Rourke, Danny DeVito, Dean Stockwell, Jon Voight, and more, and was the legendary Francis Ford Coppola‘s last movie of the 21st century. The movie was a hit with critics, returning almost universal positive praise and even earning a Golden Globe nomination. At the time of writing, The Rainmaker is one of the ten most-streamed movies on the free streaming site Tubi in the U.S. The timing feels appropriate, given that one of TV’s best legal thrillers, The Lincoln Lawyer, was just cancelled by Netflix.
‘The Rainmaker’ Disappointed at the Box Office
Despite featuring an eye-catching cast and being based on a popular novel, The Rainmaker ultimately underperformed at the box office. Against a reported budget of $40 million, the movie earned just over $45 million worldwide, which was particularly disappointing, given that another Grisham adaptation, 1993’s The Firm, earned more than $230 million worldwide against a similar budget. Of course, The Firm benefited from a Tom Cruise at the peak of his powers in the lead role, as opposed to a fresh-faced Damon.
The Rainmaker is streaming for free on Tubi. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for all the latest streaming news.
