Netflix’s Perfect, Offbeat Documentary Is A Masterclass In Undetected Living
By Robert Scucci
| Published

With rent prices spiraling out of control, the average person has to figure out how to be thrifty enough to survive in this brutal economy if they want to maintain a comfortable quality of life. Personally, I freelance full time because it allows me to work from home and keep a flexible schedule. That lifestyle choice lets me stay home with my kids, saving a ton of money on child care. I’m also saving hand over fist on car maintenance and fuel costs because I don’t have a commute. In a past life, I remember dropping about 10 grand a year just getting to and from an office setting that made me miserable, so I don’t do that anymore, and my wallet thanks me for it.
Most importantly, I like staying home so I can actually enjoy what my rent pays for. I’ll stand in the vacant corner of the living room that we don’t quite know what to do with yet, simply because we’re paying for every single square inch and might as well use it. When my wife asks what I’m doing, I tell her I’m getting my money’s worth and enjoying my rent. While this behavior sounds a little silly, it’s nothing compared to what’s uncovered in the 2024 documentary, Secret Mall Apartment.
It’s Exactly What It Sounds like

If you’re wondering what Secret Mall Apartment is about, there’s no need to read between the lines. It’s about a collective of Rhode Island-based artists, led by Michael Townsend, who secretly lived inside the Providence Place shopping mall for four years without being discovered. What began as a creative solution to displacement ultimately became a long term, living art installation and a quiet protest against gentrification. Along the way, the documentary also makes a strong case for using art as a way to reclaim your life, which might be exactly the kind of inspiration you’re looking for right now.
It all started in 2003, when Michael Townsend and his friends Colin Bliss, Adrian Valdez Young, Andrew Oesch, Greta Scheing, James Mercer, Emily Ustach, and Jay Zehngebot needed a new base of operations after the dilapidated Eagle Square district, which functioned as a creative hub for local artists, was leveled to make way for the sprawling shopping center. Providence Place mall was never exactly welcomed by longtime residents, largely because it was seen as a development that would drive up costs and push lower income families out of the area.

While reluctantly wandering through the mall to see what all the hype was about, Townsend discovered a chunk of unutilized space where several structures intersected. That discovery sparked the idea to slowly transform it into a hidden apartment. With the help of his friends, they turned the space into a modest but functional living area of roughly 750 square feet. Using a Pentax Optio camera, they documented the entire process, from sneaking furniture into the space to tapping electricity from a nearby store. They even hauled in dozens of cinder blocks to construct their own wall and a locking door, all without drawing attention from security.
Technically Theft And Trespassing, But Also A Living Art Installment
Townsend was eventually discovered, cited for trespassing, and evicted from the secret mall apartment in 2007. Even so, it’s hard not to admire the initiative behind the whole thing. As the documentary makes clear, Townsend is the kind of person who sees art in everything, and transforming the space was simply another creative challenge. While living inside the mall, the group continued to work on ambitious projects under the radar, including contributing to an elaborate 9/11 memorial in New York City and creating large scale tape murals at children’s hospitals, more often than not working tirelessly for free.

Between these demanding projects, the group returned to their secret mall apartment to talk shop, plan their next ideas, and unwind by playing video games, watching TV, and simply having a place to exist without paying rent. The stunt itself is impressive, but it also functioned as a pointed commentary on gentrification. Providence Place was a massive development designed primarily for tourists rather than locals. After the construction of the 1.4 million square foot mall displaced a thriving underground art community, Townsend felt reclaiming 750 unused square feet was a fitting way to push back.
Secret Mall Apartment is a satisfying watch because the apartment represents more than just a clever place to live. It stands for reclaiming autonomy through unconventional means and tells a genuinely inspiring story about eight people who followed a strange idea because it felt like their calling at the time. Every person who lived in the secret mall apartment still works in the arts today. Meanwhile, the mall itself is currently under state receivership, which feels like an ironic footnote in a story about creativity outlasting corporate progress.

If you’re looking for a feel-good documentary that might spark something in your own creative life, or if you’re just looking for some thrifty interior decorating tips, you can stream Secret Mall Apartment on Netflix.

Why Vince Gilligan’s Latest Update on ‘Pluribus’ Season 2 Is Actually a Good Thing
Every week, when Apple TV‘s hit sci-fi show Pluribus released a new episode, it answered many questions while posing even more. From Manousos’ (Carlos-Manuel Vesga) exploration of radio frequencies and how they tie into how the Others communicate to just how much of humanity’s former selves remain in the hivemind, Vince Gilligan‘s series is filled with unique and fascinating mysteries. This intrigue can be both a blessing and a curse, as viewers are eager to continue the journey with Carol (Rhea Seehorn) following the events of the Season 1 finale.
Recent comments from Gilligan, however, imply that fans will need to be extra patient as the show’s writing team constructs the future narrative. Rather than seeing this as a disappointment, fans should appreciate the writers taking their time with a project like this. Even if it conflicts with the desire to return to the traditional TV format of a season every year, it’s far better for Pluribus to be well-executed than rushed.
‘Pluribus’ Won’t Be Returning With a New Season Every Year, Says Vince Gilligan
One of the most impressive things about Gilligan’s storytelling is a minute attention to detail. In Pluribus, on the heels of Gilligan’s two biggest shows, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, there are Easter eggs and subtle foreshadowing throughout that eagle-eyed viewers delight in spotting, but this kind of detail doesn’t come easily, requiring multiple rewrites and brainstorming sessions to create.
At Apple TV’s recent press day, where Collider was in attendance, Gilligan confirmed as much, explaining that while the show’s writers are “deeper into the process at this moment” than he expected, there are still only “[a] few episodes we have figured out.” Gilligan compared the “patience” required by fans to how the show’s release schedule won’t take a page from “The Pitt coming back every year.” While some may be disappointed that Gilligan and his team won’t be bringing Pluribus back to our screens anytime soon, viewers should respect the writers’ desire to maintain their meticulous approach to the narrative, choosing to get it right rather than simply get it done.
Fans Should Trust Vince Gilligan and Be Patient About the Wait for ‘Pluribus’ Season 2
One of the recent developments in the television landscape has been the pace at which shows are released, with the streaming model becoming dominant and leading to longer wait times between seasons. More recent series, however, have seen a return to the traditional format of releasing a season every year, like The Pitt, which Gilligan emphasized as an “old school” method that parallels his own previous experience writing for The X-Files. There’s no doubt that critics will use Noah Wyle‘s hit HBO medical drama or even the soon-to-be returning Daredevil: Born Again as proof that Pluribus is taking too long to deliver a second season, which exemplifies one of streaming TV’s most frustrating trends.
However, no two shows are the same, and a release strategy that works for one series wouldn’t necessarily fit another. The Pitt and Daredevil: Born Again have clear throughlines with more grounded worlds, which likely makes the writing process easier. In contrast, Pluribus is unique; the Others, and their mysterious origins and mechanisms of assimilation, require far more mapping out in the writers’ room to figure out what is and isn’t possible in this sci-fi world.
This is not to say that viewers should rejoice that they will have to wait longer for another season of Pluribus, as even Gilligan acknowledges that he “[wishes] it would be” possible for his creative team to release a new season every year. Instead, these comments serve as a message to fans to sit tight and have faith that progress is being made. Pluribus Season 2 may not premiere next year, but it will come, and when it does, it will be more than worth it because of the time that went into crafting its story, not despite it.

Cardi B Threatens Legal Action After Robot Footage Goes Viral

As the video racked up millions of views and tens of thousands of interactions, Cardi B shut it down fast with a blunt warning directed at TMZ, who originally posted the video on X. “Delete or I will sue … immediately,” she wrote in a reply X post.
The footage, which was shared by multiple accounts but has a TMZ logo plastered on the front, shows Cardi in a fitted yellow-and-black outfit dancing with the robot on a public walkway. At one point, the robot abruptly “launches” forward, catching Cardi off guard and causing her to fall backward.

Fans Call Viral Robot Clip ‘Historic’
The moment was quickly framed online as the robot “attacking” or “toppling” her. “Cardi B falls after a robot launches at her while she was dancing on it,” one user who shared the video wrote, as another chimed in, “this video will go down in history.”
A third wrote, “I can’t express how happy I am someone caught it from this angle lol,” while someone else replied, “This is so good. Thank you. I cannot confirm or deny that I might have watched this 100 times already.”

Cardi B Touches Down For Super Bowl LX As Stefon Diggs Faces Legal Turmoil

Cardi B’s viral robot moment comes as she’s spending Super Bowl week in San Francisco, where she’s expected to cheer on Stefon Diggs and the New England Patriots as they face off against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX. But while Diggs prepares for the biggest game of his career, he’s also dealing with serious off-field drama.

Just days before kickoff, the Patriots wide receiver was hit with a lawsuit alleging defamation, civil conspiracy, and more. As The Blast reported, a man who claims he previously worked for Diggs says the NFL star asked him in July 2024 to help arrange transport for Diggs’ Ferrari from Miami to New York and then to Houston. The car was later reported stolen in Houston, a theft the man says law enforcement ultimately concluded was carried out by third parties in a sophisticated operation.
Despite that, the plaintiff alleges Diggs began telling people in their shared circles that he was responsible for the theft. The man says he was never arrested or charged, but claims the accusations severely damaged his concierge and consulting business.

Partying At Michael Rubin’s Fanatics Super Bowl Bash

In addition to making headlines online, Cardi B was also spotted out and about in San Francisco’s elite Super Bowl party circuit. The rapper attended the 2026 Fanatics Super Bowl Party, the ultra-exclusive event hosted by Michael Rubin, founder and CEO of Fanatics.
The star-studded bash took place Saturday night at Pier 48 in San Francisco and drew a who’s who of celebrities and athletes ahead of Super Bowl LX. Cardi mingled alongside major NFL names, including Joe Burrow and Tom Brady, as music, fashion, and football worlds collided for one of the most talked-about parties of the weekend.
Cardi B Plays Coy On Possible Bad Bunny Halftime Cameo

With Bad Bunny set to headline the Super Bowl LX halftime show, speculation around surprise guest appearances has been swirling all week, and Cardi B has been at the center of it. The Grammy-winning rapper, who previously teamed up with Bad Bunny on their chart-topping hit “I Like It,” was asked directly by a reporter whether fans could expect to see her pop up during the halftime performance.
Rather than shut the idea down or confirm anything, Cardi kept her answer deliberately vague. “It would be exciting,” she said, flashing a knowing smile before declining to elaborate further, even as the reporter pressed for more details.
Fans will certainly be watching closely when Bad Bunny takes the stage tonight, Sunday, February 8, to see if the two reunite under the brightest spotlight in sports.

Chris Brown Throws Shade at Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl 60 Halftime Show
Chris Brown made his feelings clear about Bad Bunny’s halftime show at Super Bowl 60 on Sunday, February 8.
“I THINK IT’S SAFE TO SAY.. THEY NEED ME!! 😏,” Brown, 36, posted via his Instagram Story at the conclusion of Bad Bunny’s performance.
The Puerto Rican rapper’s show was an energetic celebration of his Puerto Rican roots, featuring cameos from Lady Gaga, Ricky Martin, Pedro Pascal, Jessica Alba, Karol G and more.
Bad Bunny being selected as Super Bowl halftime performer drew a broad spectrum of reactions after it was announced in September 2025.
One of the first to criticize the choice was former NASCAR driver Danica Patrick, who complained about Bad Bunny performing in Spanish.
“Oh fun,” Patrick, 42, wrote via X. “No songs in English should not be allowed at one of America’s highest rated television events of the year … not just for sports.”
Patrick doubled down on her criticism days later during an appearance on Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast.

“The Super Bowl is the most highly-watched show that we have on television in the whole year,” Patrick said. “127 million people are estimated to watch it. It’s the crown jewel on television and in sports, in particular. It’s where we come together as a country. We enjoy it, we have parties, we love watching the halftime performance. We know we love to sing along to the halftime performance and it’s usually one of those that’s very versatile across so many different age ranges.”
She continued, “I don’t have any problem with someone performing at halftime that is not from the United States, although Bad Bunny is technically a citizen because he was born in Puerto Rico,” she continued. “He wasn’t necessarily born in America. I don’t care where you’re actually born. What I care about is that I can sing along to the music. His music is almost nothing in English. I don’t think it will be as much fun. I don’t think it will be as uniting. What I would hate to see is that it would divide us again, in yet another way.”

Pro football Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson bashed the selection of Bad Bunny, though he admitted he was unfamiliar with the rapper.
“I don’t even know who the hell the guy is. I’ve never heard of him,” Dickerson, 65, told TMZ in October 2025. “I’m not that big into music. What’s his name? What the hell does Bad Bunny sing? I don’t know one of [his] songs.”
Dickerson added, “Keep his ass in Puerto Rico.”
Despite some major pushback, Bad Bunny had plenty of A-list supporters in his corner, including Jennifer Lopez.
“I think he’s about to blow everybody’s mind,” Lopez, 56, said during an October appearance on the Today show. “It’s an introduction to some people.”
When asked about the backlash, Lopez added, “I don’t understand that. He’s one of the top artists in the world right now, probably the top.”

Mac Jones Shrugs Off 49ers’ Substation Conspiracy, ‘I Can’t Hear The Buzz’
Mac Jones
I’m Not Buzzing Over Substation Conspiracy
Published
TMZSports.com
Mac Jones isn’t exactly buying into the 49ers’ viral practice facility conspiracy … but he’s not completely brushing it off either!
The San Francisco backup QB talked with TMZ Sports about the chatter tying the team’s nearby electrical substation to their injury history … a theory that’s picked up steam online and even sparked quiet locker room curiosity over the years.
Some have speculated electromagnetic fields from the power station by Levi’s Stadium could be messing with players’ bodies, but there’s been zero scientific proof backing it.
Jones kept things pretty chill when asked about it … saying he hasn’t personally noticed anything strange since joining the team.
“I haven’t been there long enough,” Jones said, “but I think there’s something to studying it and at least finding out if it’s good or bad, but I don’t feel any different.”
He even poked fun at one of the conspiracy’s more out-there claims — that players can supposedly hear electrical buzzing near the facility.
“I can’t hear the buzz,” he said. “Maybe some of the guys who have been there for a minute, but not me.”
For those who may be drinking the tea … neither of the Super Bowl teams is practicing at the Niners’ facility.
Jones also made it clear he’s not exactly a tin-foil-hat kinda guy when it comes to conspiracy theories in general.
“Honestly, no,” he said. “I’ll entertain them, but I don’t believe any weird ones.”
While speculation continues to swirl around the Niners — fueled in part by the team’s recent injury stretches — Jones sounds locked in on football, not power grids.
“I’m happy where I’m at,” he added. “I love the 49ers and I want to keep winning and having fun.”
Safe to say Mac’s focused on reading defenses … not radiation levels.

Bad Bunny Dances With Lady Gaga During Super Bowl 2026 Halftime Show
Bad Bunny invited some friends to join him on stage during his 2026 Super Bowl halftime show performance — but Lady Gaga made the biggest splash.
Gaga, 39, sang a new version of “Die With a Smile” (her collaboration with Bruno Mars) while taking the stage at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Sunday, February 8, as the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots competed in the big game. After her surprise performance, Gaga stuck around for a quick dance routine with Bad Bunny, 31.
Gaga’s appearance comes after she and Bad Bunny had a sweet moment at the 2026 Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 1.
“She said, ‘I love you!’ And that’s it,” Bad Bunny told Access Hollywood about crossing paths with Gaga at the awards show. “And I was like, ‘I love you too!’”
But that wasn’t the only trick he had up his sleeve. The Puerto Rico native included Pedro Pascal, Karol G, Alix Earle, Cardi B, Jessica Alba and Ricky Martin in his performance as well.

News broke in September 2025 that Bad Bunny would headline the Super Bowl LX halftime show.
“What I’m feeling goes beyond myself,” he said in a statement at the time. “It’s for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown … this is for my people, my culture and our history. Ve y dile a tu abuela, que seremos el HALFTIME SHOW DEL SUPER BOWL.”
Before taking the reins himself, Bad Bunny made a surprise appearance during Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s Super Bowl halftime show in 2020. At the time, he and Shakira, 49, performed his hit “I Like It” before singing a mash-up of her song “Chantaje” and his track “Callaítia.”
Lopez, 56, and Shakira both showed their support for Bad Bunny after he was announced as the 2026 halftime show headliner.
“I think he’s about to blow everybody’s mind,” Lopez raved on the Today show in October 2025. “It’s an introduction to some people.”
Lopez went on to say that she didn’t “understand” the backlash to Bad Bunny’s involvement in the halftime show, noting, “He’s one of the top artists in the world right now, probably the top.”

“It could be a lot of different people. That’s the thing,” she explained. “I’m super excited for people to see him. I think they’ll be pleasantly surprised because his music transcends language. It’s amazing what he’s done. He’s done something that a lot of people have never done in their life.”
Lopez also reflected on her own Super Bowl performance with Bad Bunny and Shakira.
“Me, Shakira, Bad Bunny, J Balvin — and we had an amazing time,” she recalled. “It was a really cultural moment.”
Later that month, Shakira shared her enthusiasm over Bad Bunny helming the halftime show.
“It’s about time!” she told Variety. “I remember when we did ours that even having part of our set in Spanish was a bold move. … Acceptance of Spanish-language music as part of the mainstream has come so far from when I started. I hope and like to think that all the times my music was met with resistance or puzzlement from the English-speaking world before it was embraced helped forge the path to where we are now.”
As for Bad Bunny’s performance, Shakira felt the timing was right for him to bring his talents to the Super Bowl.
“I’m so proud that Bad Bunny, who represents not only Latin culture but also how important Spanish language music has become on a global scale and how universal it has become, is getting to perform on the biggest stage in the world,” she continued. “It’s the perfect moment for a performance like this. I can’t wait to watch it.”

Frankel Has Previously Slammed The ‘Real Housewives’ Franchise

Since exiting the “Real Housewives” franchise, Frankel has frequently voiced her strong opinions regarding the series. In 2021, she slammed the franchise’s tell-all book, “Not All Diamonds and Rosé,” for “trashing women.”
In a separate interview, Frankel implied that the franchise’s ratings were slipping because of the show’s confrontational nature.
“The ratings overall in television have never been higher and perhaps the ratings on ‘Real Housewives’ aren’t doing well because it’s sort of not maybe the content that is inspiring people to do what they need to do right now,” she said. “Or maybe they want to watch the news or something uplifting or some way to pay it forward.”

Frankel And Cohen Got Into It Over Previous Comments

In 2022, Frankel debuted her “ReWives” podcast and announced she’d be revisiting prior seasons of “RHONY.”
When Frankel texted Cohen about the series when it launched, the mother of one said Cohen replied, allegedly saying he was “glad to see you embracing the Housewives.”
His comments seemed at odds with what he said about Frankel on an episode of “Watch What Happens Live,” where he noted her history of criticizing the series as “toxic.”
Frankel clapped back at Cohen, saying she’s allowed to have strong feelings about the series and also be thankful for the opportunities it afforded her.
“I’m glad that I’m not there [but] I also do get the right to talk about because I did it for a quarter of my life,” she said.
