Manchester City have had a hectic transfer window and the final few days are expected to be busy as the Blues seek to strengthen their squad.
On the pitch City have started with two Premier League wins but the Blues hierarchy know Enzo Maresca still needs reinforcements before the window shuts on Tuesday night.
Boss Maresca wants two players for every position and places value on versatility, something that has been evident already in the two Premier League games he’s overseen.
The Blues came from behind with a late double to beat Bournemouth on the opening weekend and then thumped Crystal Palace 4-1 on Friday night to make it two wins from two in the top flight.
And while only 12 different players have started league games for City, there has already been plenty of variety on show. Marc Guehi was in midfield against Bournemouth and then at centre back at Selhurst Park, Nico O’Reilly has played in attacking midfield, central midfield and at left back while Phil Foden ended Friday in a number 10 role after Rayan Cherki dazzled in that spot during his two-goal masterclass.
The Blues have a host of players able to play in multiple positions, something Maresca wants as it enables greater options and greater tactical flexibility with City competing across four competitions.
And while the bench at Palace showed City are light on depth following a summer where a host of players have left the club, the squad is beginning to take shape. Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes missed out through injury while Ryan McAidoo showed a glimpse of his potential to be included in more senior squads with a bright burst and shot having come on as a late sub at Palace.
“I think the right idea is to have two players in each position,” said Maresca this week. “They need to compete between them. The standard is higher when they compete for every game. So for me the ideal is to have two players in each position.
“And then we have Ryan McAidoo, [Floyd] Samba, Kaden [Braithwaite] so I think three or four Academy players with us is enough. At the moment we have 21, 22 players and that can be the right number.
“In this moment we have three or four in this number who are Academy players, so thinking we are playing maybe 65 games this season we probably need more numbers.”
City are covered in goal with Gianluigi Donnarumma and Geronimo Rulli while the defence also looks well catered for with Ruben Dias, Marc Guehi, Josko Gvardiol, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis five centre back options. The latter three are also able to cover at full back where Nunes and Nico O’Reilly look the long-term picks with Rayan Ait-Nouri an excellent alternative on the left and Rico Lewis an option if he stays at City past Tuesday’s deadline.
Ayyoub Bouaddi made his debut on Friday having signed for £81million from Lille and he can offer competition for Elliot Anderson and Mateo Kovacic in the middle of the park, though it is clear City are a body light here with the Blues still hoping to land Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea in what would be a club record deal.
Further forward, Cherki and Foden are two excellent options in the number 10 role while Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo have the wide positions locked down either side of Erling Haaland.
But, with Jack Grealish seemingly edging closer to the exit door, and Omar Marmoush and Savinho having already left, greater depth is needed in the attacking areas.
Brazilian Allan will add an option once his move is formalised with a deal with Palmerias already agreed, while McAidoo could step up as a senior option. But City need more and are keen on Iliman Ndiaye at Everton and Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo has been mentioned as a possible target.
Maresca may well want two more attackers in the building to offer support to first choice trio Haaland, Semenyo and Doku but one new arrival capable of playing up top or out wide – in essence a replacement for Marmoush – feels a necessity.
If City are able to do that, and add Fernandez between now and 11pm on Tuesday, then Maresca will have the squad size he desires and a player he desperately wants ahead of what promises to be an enthralling campaign.
