Katie Boulter crashes out of Wimbledon as Katie Swan becomes first Briton to reach second round

Hello and welcome to coverage from day two of Wimbledon where Katie Boulter represents Great Britain’s best chance of a presence in the second week after a dismal opening day.

Ten Britons were beaten on Monday, which is one of the worst set of results in recent history.

It could have been even worse but Jack Pinnington Jones was spared by bad light against Brandon Nakashima at two sets down and will have to finish his opener on Tuesday.

The tally of losses is the worst for the home nation since daily records began in 2000, while there is a possibility the record of 16 first-round defeats could be exceeded when the remaining players take to the court today.

Fran Jones, who became the final faller when she lost 6-4, 6-4 to France’s Diane Parry, said: “It will create bad headlines, probably slightly unfairly. I think, with some of the draws that people are handed, it was always going to be difficult.

“But no one can hide from the heaviness of Wimbledon. It’s important to everyone, and I’m sure it played a factor being at the home slam.”

The Lawn Tennis Association can justifiably point to the fact that the draws were particularly unkind this year, with only Cameron Norrie facing a player ranked lower than him.

The British No 1’s defeat by American Michael Zheng was undoubtedly the most disappointing of the day, although the qualifier played a terrific match to win in a fifth-set tie-break.

It was a sixth defeat in a row for last year’s quarter-finalist Norrie, who said: “If I could have had a few more matches leading in, I think I can win this match. There were so many small moments in the match that he did really well to go on his side.”

Harriet Dart was close to pulling off a sizeable upset against former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, eventually losing out 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Qualifier Oliver Tarvet, who lost in the second round to Carlos Alcaraz last year, also played at a high level in a four-hour battle against 25th seed Arthur Rinderknech but was unable to force a deciding set.

Britain’s teenage trio of Mimi Xu, Hannah Klugman and Mika Stojsavljevic were also among the losers after being handed very difficult draws.

Xu won her first senior set at Wimbledon against former quarter-finalist Daria Kasatkina but fell to a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 defeat while Stojsavljevic was quickly beaten 6-2, 6-1 by last year’s semi-finalist Belinda Bencic.

Klugman, 17, took on 2024 champion Barbora Krejcikova and was left feeling encouraged after a close second set in a 6-1, 6-4 loss.

“I feel so motivated because it was 4-4, I had points to go 5-5,” said Klugman. “In the first set I think I had a break point in most of her service games. So it’s close.”

Elsewhere, wild card Felix Gill was beaten by rising Spanish star Rafael Jodar while fellow debutants Alicia Dudeney and Max Basing also lost.

Man caught on video chucking boiling water over police officer during arrest

Published

Daily Record

John Davies, 58, admitted assaulting two police officers and a member of the public at his Winson Green home

Man jailed for more than 14 years for throwing boiling water over officer

This is the disturbing footage showing a brutal thug launching an attack on police officers – punching one before dousing another with scalding water as they attempted to arrest him at his Birmingham property.

Two constables responded to reports of a disturbance at John Davies’ residence in Winson Green, where they discovered him trapping another individual against his garden fence.

When the officers separated the pair, the second man alerted them that Davies was armed with a knife.

The 58 year old denied possessing a blade before hurling the contents of a hot beverage he had prepared into the face of his opponent.

Davies then struck one constable in the face before seizing his freshly-boiled kettle and emptying its contents over the other officer, reports Birmingham Live.

The female constable who was drenched with the boiling water sustained blistering across her shoulders, back and neck following the assault.

She could be heard informing her fellow officers: “I need an ambo. I’ve been scalded with a kettle.”

Davies was apprehended and charged with the offences.

He subsequently pleaded guilty to maliciously wounding the PC he scalded with intent to resist arrest, assaulting the officer he struck, and assaulting the individual involved in the dispute.

Davies, of Talbot Street, Winson Green, received a 14-and-a-half-year sentence at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, June 26.

An extended licence period of four years was also imposed.

Det Con Manpreet Sidhu, from West Midlands Police’s neighbourhood team in Bournville, said: “This was a horrendous attack on two officers going about their duties. You can see from the footage that Davies put up a struggle and it took many officers to restrain him so that he could be brought into custody.

“One of the officers involved suffered significant injuries and has only recently been able to return to work following this assault. No one should have to face this level of violence simply for doing their job.

“I hope the sentence delivered to Davies provides some justice for those involved. This will have a lasting impact on the officers but Davies is where he firmly belongs – in prison.”

Cupboard-friendly ice-cream maker makes ‘super-creamy ice cream’ in minutes

Published

on

Wales Online

One ice cream lover said that it was their ‘favourite new toy’ and that they’d been making “protein ice cream with Greek yoghurt’

Shoppers are snapping up a compact yet versatile ice-cream maker from Amazon ideal for the hot weather. The Cuisinart FreezeWand Ice Cream Maker is an Amazon’s Choice product, and it’s currently available for £99.99.

Verified buyers say that it makes wonderful creamy ice cream in minutes and that, thanks to its compact size, it fits neatly into cupboards when not in use. It’s one of a number of ice cream makers on the market that are available at a discount.

A much cheaper option is the this Lakeland 1.5-litre ice cream maker, which is currently reduced from £39.99 to £19.99 in the Lakeland sale. This gadget features a transparent lid and has a built-in motor. To reiterate, it looks to us like the most affordable option out there.

Towards the upper end of the ice cream maker market is the Ninja CREAMi deluxe 10-in-1 Ice Cream and Frozen Drink Maker. The product description says that it can ‘turn almost anything into ice cream and so much more’, including ice cream, sorbet, gelato, fruit slush coffee frappe, frozen yoghurt and drinks. It’s currently available for £249.99 in the SharkNinja sale.

Shoppers have left many positive reviews for the Amazon Cuisinart product, however. One said: “Chose this model over other brands because I wanted an ice cream maker but I don’t have space to store a big machine in my kitchen.

The ice cream maker has five different functions for different treats.

“The fact you can make three flavours at once is great for being able to make a flavour for me and a flavour for my hubby and an extra one, too. The freezer pots are super handy and don’t take up much space in my already very full freezer, so that’s a win.”

A second said: “Love this! Makes lovely creamy ice cream in a few minutes. You do have to freeze whatever mix you are using beforehand, but I make enough for all three tubs and leave them in the freezer till we need them. One tub is enough for two of us, so this may not work for larger families who eat a lot of ice cream, but if you just fancy a small treat occasionally, it’s perfect.”

A third added: “The slushie came out well and the ice cream is lovely! I love that I can make ice cream at home, quickly and easily, without any nasty artificial flavouring or any random additives like emulsifiers in my dessert! It makes super-creamy ice cream.”

One ice cream lover said that it was their “favourite new toy” and they’d been making “protein ice cream with Greek yoghurt”. They also added a few words of warning about portion size and operating the gadget, however: “Great little ice cream maker! Bought this over the Ninja Creami and am delighted with it.

“The three pots that come with this are ideally sized to stop me making and eating too much ice cream or sorbets at a time. Simple to use but definitely recommend you let them defrost for 10 minutes before churning, else the blades can become stuck requiring you to leave it for ages to thaw!”

The Cuisinart FreezeWand Ice Cream Maker can ‘whip up three different frozen treats one after the other’, the site says, and users can add fresh ingredients and mix-ins. With five functions – ice cream, slushie, milkshake, sorbet, and mix-ins – shoppers can ‘effortlessly create a variety of frozen delights in as little as five minutes’.

One of the standout features is its compact design, along with the stackable dessert cups, making storage quick and easy. Plus, with the dishwasher-safe dessert cups and lids, it’s easy to clean.

The Cuisinart FreezeWand Ice Cream Maker is available from Amazon.

Caroline Flack's Brother Paul Has Died, Aged 55

Caroline Flack’s older brother Paul has died at the age of 55.

BBC News has reported on Tuesday afternoon Paul was found unresponsive at his home in Norwich on Sunday 21 June.

He was then taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, where he later died.

Norfolk Coroners’ Court heard that the graphic designer and artist’s cause of death was cardiac arrest as a result of hanging.

A more in-depth inquest into Paul’s death is now due to take place in October.

Per Metro, Paul is survived by his partner and two children.

Paul and Caroline Flack with their sister Jody, in an Instagram post shared in January 2017

News of Paul’s death comes six years after his younger sister, Love Island host Caroline, took her own life at the age of 40 in February 2020.

At the time, the presenter had been awaiting trial following allegations that she had assaulted her boyfriend, which she refuted.

Caroline’s suicide led to widespread conversations around the treatment of public figures in the mainstream press and on social media.

Last year, Paul and his mum Christine Flack were among the contributors to the Disney+ documentary Caroline Flack: Search For The Truth.

An official synopsis for the two-part doc explained: “This powerful two-part Disney+ documentary follows Caroline’s mother, Christine, as she investigates the truth about her daughter’s final months – uncovering new shocking details, asking difficult questions, and exposing the misrepresentations, pressures, and failures from institutions and decision makers that shaped Caroline’s final days.

“With access to powerful testimony from Caroline’s inner circle and those who were there, the series tells the story she never got to share and reveals an unprecedented look at what really happened to Caroline Flack.”

Months after Caroline died, Paul shared a childhood photo of his youngest sister on Instagram, stating that it would be the final time he posted anything on the social media site.

This will be my last post here,” he said at the time. “May those who know feel shame for eternity.”

Staffordshire Police are investigating after a woman was left ‘shaken’ when a man allegedly threatened to ‘punch her in the face’ during a furious row

Lichfield: Tempers flare over claims dog left in sweltering hot car

Police are investigating a heated altercation at a Midlands B&M store following allegations that a dog was left inside a vehicle in temperatures exceeding 30C.

Striking footage captured the confrontation at the discount retailer’s Lichfield branch at Imperial Retail Park, near Eastern Avenue, during the red alert heatwave on Wednesday, June 24.

A woman in her 30s, who claimed she had removed the dog from the car, was reportedly left “shaken” following a confrontation with a man — believed to be the dog’s owner — who was heard threatening to punch her in the face.

The man “reportedly became aggressive and abusive”, according to Staffordshire Police.

During the altercation, he was heard repeatedly shouting “give me my dog” after another shopper alleged he had “committed a crime”, reports Birmingham Live.

The woman was heard stating she had “liberated” the dog after allegedly discovering it inside “a van in 34C heat”.

The man responded, insisting: “I haven’t committed any crime. The window was open.”

He was also heard saying: “Give me my dog or I’ll lose my s***. Give me my dog you weirdo before I punch you in the face.”

Staffordshire Police has now launched a formal investigation into the incident.

A force spokesperson told BirminghamLive: “We’re appealing for information after a woman was verbally abused after taking action to help a dog allegedly left in a hot car.

“The victim, a woman in her 30s, had spotted the dog in a car on the car park of Imperial Retail Park, Lichfield, at around lunchtime on Wednesday.

“She took the dog into a nearby store which was air-conditioned, before alerting staff.

“The owner of the dog then reportedly became aggressive and abusive.”

The force stated officers were summoned to the shop at approximately 1pm.

It continued: “We spoke to the victim and staff members before reviewing CCTV footage from the store at the time.

“The woman was left shaken but unhurt.

“We’re keen to speak to anybody who saw what happened or anyone who may have relevant dash-cam footage.

“RSPCA advisc is that, even if dogs are left in cars parked in the shade with windows open, the interior temperature of the vehicle can reach up to 47C within an hour, even if the weather is only 22C outside.”

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the force by calling 101 and quoting log number 455 of June 24.

Ultimate humiliation for Bill Gates as his foundation’s most famous donor PAUSES gift for first time in decades as probe into Epstein links continues

Published

Warren Buffett is set to pause his annual donation to the Gates Foundation - worth billions of dollars each year - to wait for an internal review into Bill Gates' ties to Jeffrey Epstein

Bill Gates is facing fresh humiliation as billionaire investor Warren Buffett is reportedly pausing his yearly donation to the Gates Foundation over Jeffrey Epstein

Buffett, 95, has given a midyear donation to the Gates Foundation worth billions of dollars in stock for his corporation Berkshire Hathaway for over two decades, intended to be a ‘lifetime’ pledge to the charity.

But the financial legend is set to pause the gift this year so he can wait to see the result of an internal review into the foundation’s ties to Epstein, according to the Wall Street Journal

The review will be carried out by the law firm WilmerHale, which was retained by the Gates Foundation to probe the links. It is expected to share its findings in the summer.

Sources told the Journal that Buffett is delaying his decision over whether to continue his regular donation to the Gates Foundation until that time, and likely until he publishes his annual Thanksgiving letter to shareholders.

The loss of the donation would be a major hit to the Gates Foundation’s bottom line, with Buffett having given around $48 billion to the foundation from 2006 to 2025.  The Gates Foundation is one of the world’s largest philanthropical organizations and aims to use its vast reserves of cash to fight poverty, disease and inequality.

It comes after Gates was grilled over his links to Epstein by Congress earlier this month, where the Microsoft founder was forced to admit to several extramarital affairs in an excruciating hearing.

Gates has frequently denied any wrongdoing related to his friendship with Epstein, but conceded that the sex trafficker used his knowledge of the affairs to try to blackmail him into continuing their relationship after Gates cut him off in 2014.

The Daily Mail has contacted Buffett’s firm Berkshire Hathaway and the Gates Foundation for comment.

According to sources speaking to the Journal, Buffett’s decision to pause his donations came after meeting with the Gates Foundation leadership, including CEO Mark Suzman.

Buffet’s close relationship to the Gates Foundation began in 2006, when he donated roughly $1.5 billion in Berkshire Hathaway stock for the charity’s philanthropic efforts.

At the time, Buffett said the donation was the start of a lifetime pledge to give away most of his fortune to charity over the rest of his career, with the lion’s share going to the Gates Foundation.

The gift allowed the Gates Foundation to immediately double its charitable giving, with Buffett joining the foundation as a trustee.

Buffett and Gates enjoyed a close friendship and business relationship for many years, with Gates also joining Berkshire Hathaway as a board member in 2004.

Gates left the board in 2020, and Buffett then stepped down as a trustee of the Gates Foundation in 2021, when Gates and his ex-wife Melinda French Gates announced they were divorcing.

Amid the fallout from the Epstein Files release, it has emerged that the Gates’ marriage fell apart following Bill’s extramarital affairs and Melinda’s frustrations over her husband’s ties to Epstein.

Gates has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing related to Epstein and says he never witnessed any criminal activity, but conceded that his friendship with the pedophile was a ‘grave error in judgement.’

In March, Buffett admitted that the Epstein fallout had strained his friendship with Gates, saying he had not spoken to the Microsoft founder since the Epstein Files were released last December.

Buffett told CNBC that he was looking out for his own reputation, as he didn’t ‘want to be in a position where I know things, to be called as a witness.’

‘I think until it gets cleared up, it doesn’t make sense to do a lot of talking,’ he said at the time.

Game, set, love match! Meet the glamorous Wimbledon WAGs – and supportive HABs – flocking to centre court to cheer on their tennis ace partners

Game, set, love match! Meet the glamorous Wimbledon WAGs - and supportive HABs - flocking to centre court to cheer on their tennis ace partners

As the sun rises above the perfectly green pitches in leafy south west London, the glamorous WAGS of Wimbledon are preparing for two weeks of watching their sporty partners battle it out on the centre court.

The prestigious tournament is now underway, after tennis stars and their glamorous partners descended on SW19 earlier this week.

The tennis wives and girlfriends – or TWAGs as they have become known – lead lives of luxury and travel around the globe while accompanying players for tournaments.

This year, Centre Court will see the return of familiar faces like Jelena Djokovic as she supports tennis legend Novak on his quest for his 25th Grand Slam.

Also returning to the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club is American soccer player Trinity Rodman, who is dating Ben Shelton, as well as Paige Lorenze, the American influencer who recently got engaged to Tommy Paul.

Other TWAGs likely to turn heads this season include Ayan Broomfield, Ivana Nedved, and Nina Ghaibi.

Not to be left behind, the proud partners of Serena Williams and Aryna Sabalenka,  Alexis Ohanian and Georgios Frangulis, will undoubtedly be a part of this year’s HABs (husbands and boyfriends) brigade.

Notable absences include Morgan Riddle, who will not join the class of 2026 after she split from US tennis star Taylor Fritz earlier this year and swore off athletes entirely.

Louise Jacobi

Now in her sixth year on the tour, American textile designer Louise Jacobi’s ‘calm, positive impact’ on Cameron Norrie has been praised by the tennis supremo’s parents

Cameron Norrie‘s fiancée, Louise Jacobi, is hailed as the British tennis star’s secret weapon and will undoubtedly return to Wimbledon to cheer him on this year.

The Chicago-born textile designer has been in a relationship with Cameron since 2020, after they were introduced by mutual friends in the summer of 2019.

Recalling their early conversations in an interview with The Standard, Louise said: ‘I remember him saying when we first met: “Oh, my dream would be to be in the top 10.”

‘Back then, I didn’t know it was going to transpire, and just watching his hard work pay off has been insane.’

Louise was in the stands in October 2021 when Johannesburg-born Cameron became the first Brit to win the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, as one friend previously described her as the ‘wind beneath his racket’.

Conceding she ‘didn’t even know how to keep score’ when they started dating, Louise said: ‘I definitely, in a lot of ways, help keep his mind off of tennis, give him some sort of separation, and keep him calm.’

Now in her sixth year on the tour, Louise’s ‘calm, positive impact’ on Norrie has also been praised by the tennis supremo’s parents.

Now a seasoned WAG, Louise reflected on the title in an interview with Tatler as she said:  ‘I still remember the first time… I’d just started dating Cam and somebody was like, “What’s it like to be a WAG?”

‘I was like, oh my god, I never thought about that… I think it’s kind of ridiculous but I guess… that is what I am.’

The English graduate, who hails from Illinois, has no issue with the label, saying that she has always ’embraced’ becoming a WAG.

‘I’ve worked tirelessly to try to turn around the connotations – having that title [WAG] shouldn’t mean that we’re any less than because we choose to support our partners,’ she added.

However, Cameron’s glamorous partner admitted being a WAG makes it ‘impossible’ to have a career due to difficulties planning ahead.

For now, Louise is set to be a permanent fixture courtside after Cameron asked her to marry him during a romantic getaway in South Africa last November.

The British No2 was holidaying at the andBeyond Ngala Safari Lodge in Timbavati, around six hours from his birthplace of Johannesburg, when he got down on one knee.

Louise shared a picture of her kissing Cameron on his cheek on Instagram, and captioned the snap: ‘A special moment on our trip in South Africa. Cheers to a beautiful life together with my best friend.’

Daria Medvedeva first crossed paths with Russian pro Daniil Medvedev when she was 12.

Daria, who hails from Moscow, was an aspiring tennis player and was dining with her team when she laid eyes on the man who would one day be her husband – although they wouldn’t start dating until much later.

The pair even trained together until injuries forced Daria to quit playing at the age of ’17 or 18′, The Sun quoted Daniil as saying.

They did not start dating until 2014, when he reached out to Daria on Instagram and asked for her number.

After three years together, the couple relocated to Monte Carlo, Monaco, and tied the knot in September 2018.

The former US Open champion previously shared how Daria’s background in tennis has ‘helped me to become better as a person and player’.

‘She knows that we can’t go shopping before the game,’ Daniil said. ‘Understands that I can be busy from 8 am until the evening. Perhaps it’s not easy to get used to it when you don’t understand anything in tennis.

‘It helped me to become better as a person and a player,’ he gushed.

After winning the US Open in 2021 on the couple’s third wedding anniversary, he dedicated the win to ‘Dasha’ during a press conference.

‘During the tournament, I couldn’t think of a present,’ he said. ‘So when I went in the final, I thought, ‘I need to find a present fast.”

He quipped: ‘The only thing I [was thinking was that] if I lose, I have no time to have a present. So I have to win this match. I love you, Dasha.’

Jelena Djokovic, 40, is married to one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Novak Djokovic, 39, who has won a record 24 Grand Slams.

However, Jelena knew Novak long before his sporting glory. The pair are childhood sweethearts and attended the same school in Serbia, where they would play tennis before making their relationship official.

They dated for eight years before getting married in 2013 in Monte Carlo, where Novak was living at the time.

Despite the pair being together as Novak’s tennis career was taking off, Jelena had aspirations of her own.

She ended up going to Bocconi University in Milan, where she studied luxury brand management before dedicating her humanitarian work to uplifting the lives of disadvantaged children as the co-founder and global CEO of the Novak Djokovic Foundation.

Speaking about the organisation to HuffPost, Jelena said Novak and his family set up the organisation in 2007 to promote equitable access to early childhood education.

Jelena has also tried her hand at modelling and was revealed as the face of lingerie and swimwear brand Figleaves in 2013.

The couple share two children, son Stefan, 12, and daughter Tara, who is eight. Their family is completed by two poodles, Pierre and Tesla, who make frequent appearances on Jelena’s Instagram.

However, while Jelena and Novak may seem like the perfect couple, the two have their fair share of disagreements, especially when it comes to their children having mobile phones.

Previously speaking at the Davis Cup, Novak told Blic: ‘My children still don’t have a cell phone, my wife and I argue [about it].

‘The kids complain “At school, everyone has one except us.’

‘It’s not easy, and this is reflected on other levels as well. If everyone does something, the herd behaves like this, you have to follow them.

‘Well, it doesn’t have to be like that. This is where I think we differ from others, because we are stubborn and active.’

Novak claimed he was the one who was ‘responsible’ for their children’s ‘activities, sports and healthy lifestyle’ when speaking to the Tennis Channel.

But after seeing Jelena’s reaction to his response, he replied while smiling: ‘Exactly – she’s rolling her eyes right now as I’m speaking.’

American influencer Paige Lorenze is often seen front and centre in the boxes, watching her fiancé Tommy Paul battle it out at some of the world’s most testing tournaments – from the US Open to Wimbledon.

She met Tommy, 29, at the US Open in 2022 and, throughout the first year of their relationship, joined him at tournaments around the world.

But when she’s not cheering Tommy on, the glamorous business mogul is busy building her social media empire with over one million Instagram followers.

She often shares behind-the-scenes pictures and videos of her appearances at Tommy’s matches, along with promoting her American lifestyle brand, Diary Boy, which she launched in 2021.

The brand quickly became known for its high-design baseball caps, camo crewnecks, and jeans, before expanding into sweats and other apparel items, as Paige credited Tommy for continuing to ‘support me’ in an earlier interview with Page Six.

‘I really poured my time into my business, and I now have two horses, I live in a beautiful house, and I have an amazing boyfriend. I’m fulfilling all of my dreams,’ she said ahead of their first anniversary.

Paige has also described their relationship as ‘really healthy’ and said Tommy ‘wasn’t dependent on me’.

Since then, Paige has announced the pair are set to tie the knot after Tommy popped the question during a dreamy beach proposal.

Sharing a photo of her massive sparkler on Instagram, Paige celebrated the beginning of ‘forever’ before documenting her hen do in Nantucket, Massachusetts, last night.

In a chat with Interview magazine in 2023, Paige described Wimbledon as ‘very posh’ and opened up about her fashion choices at Tommy’s matches.

She said: ‘I got to a point where I was sort of like, “I’m here for Tommy.” I love fashion, but I want to be comfortable at his matches. And Tommy comes first – before fashion statements.

She also revealed that the European TWAGS, including Louise Jacobi and Nina Ghaibi, have a WhatsApp group chat and said that although she was allowed to partake as an American, she doesn’t use the app.

Before she met Tommy, Paige dated disgraced actor Armie Hammer from September to December 2020.

The following year, she was among several women who came forward to accuse him of assault.

She alleged he used a sharp knife to cut his first initial ‘A’ into her skin and also repeatedly mentioned his desire to remove and eat one of her ribs.

Trinity Rodman is the daughter of basketball icon Dennis Rodman and a sports star in her own right.

The American soccer player has been dating Ben Shelton since March 2025, with Trinity making her debut at SW19 last July.

Trinity, who plays for the Washington Spirit, swapped football boots for sandals as she was pictured gazing lovingly at her boyfriend, who is ranked fifth in the world behind Janik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Documenting her time at centre court last year, Trinity, 23, shared a loved-up photo of the pair in London with the caption: ‘Watching you with googly eyes’.

It appears the sporting power couple has been each other’s rock since they went public with their relationship on Instagram last March.

Ben posted a picture of Trinity kissing him in an elevator on his social media account and captioned his post: ‘I been focused, but I’m steady climbin’, I’m nowhere near my peak.’

The tennis superstar was every bit the supportive boyfriend when he consoled Trinity after her team lost the NWSL championship game last November.

The Washington Spirit were stunned by underdogs Gotham FC in California, as footage from the game showed Ben consoling an emotional Trinity as she burst into tears on the sidelines.

He said about his girlfriend over the summer: ‘She’s been grinding to pull up to a lot of tournaments this year. At the beginning of the year we’re like: ‘We’re not really going to see each other.’

‘And she’s been to Munich, Madrid, Paris, Wimbledon, Mallorca, D.C., Cincy, here. We doing all right.’

Their love story began when they met as junior players, with the childhood sweethearts typically celebrating their anniversary at Flushing Meadow each year.

It’s been said that the two athletes first crossed paths at the 2015 US Open, where they were introduced by mutual friend Victoria Duval, and that their romance began shortly after that.

But it wasn’t until three years later – on Valentine’s Day in 2018 – that they made their relationship public.

Since then, Ayan has been spotted sitting courtside and cheering Frances on from the sidelines at numerous matches over the years.

She even surprised the sports star when he faced off against Tomas Martin Etcheverry at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston in April 2023.

‘I also want to thank my girlfriend, Ayan, who I see in the crowd,’ Francis gushed in his victory speech. ‘I didn’t even know you were in Houston. I thought you were in LA.

‘She surprised me, that’s unbelievable.’

Ayan, originally from Toronto, played tennis for Clemson University in South Carolina from 2016 to 2017.

She then transferred to UCLA, where she played until she graduated in 2022.

In 2019, she and her teammate Gabby Andrews won the doubles event at the NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championship.

Ayan is also known for stepping in as Saniyya Sidney’s body double in the 2021 movie King Richard.

Saniyya portrayed acclaimed tennis legend Venus Williams in the biopic about the Williams family, which also starred Will Smith, Aunjanue Ellis, and Demi Singleton.

A documentary about Ayan’s career, called Ayan Broomfield Tennis Story, premiered on Amazon Prime in 2019.

A synopsis reads: ‘National Champion and All-American tennis star Ayan Broomfield reflects on her life in tennis, the influence of Venus and Serena Williams and the future of her professional career.’

Ahead of her appearance at SW19 this year, Ayan shared a selfie taken at a beauty salon in London before posting pictures and videos from an event for Coach.

The couple started dating in February 2021 and Ivana is frequently by Sebastian’s side as he travels the world for his tours.

She has amassed nearly 80,000 followers on Instagram, where Ivana faithfully documents the perks of being a WAG – from luxury travel to enviable fashion.

Ivana, who is the daughter of famous soccer player Pavel Nedved, also posts sweet pictures of her and Sebastian together, including a black-and-white snap of the pair kissing.

The picture was captioned: ‘Little joys of life’.

It comes after Ivana announced she said ‘yes’ to Sebastian following a proposal in Sarasota, Florida.

One photo posted on Instagram showed Sebastian twirling his fiancee, while another depicted the pair walking hand-in-hand on a beach, as her fellow WAGs congratulated the happy couple.

Paige said the pictures were ‘so beautiful’ while Sebastian’s sister Nelly also wished the ‘cuties’ in the comment section.

‘I’m pretty happy our paths crossed two years ago,’ Felix gushed at the time. ‘Two years of love and happiness. To many more in the future.’

Last September, Felix confirmed that the pair had exchanged vows during a beautiful wedding ceremony in Marrakech in a heartfelt Instagram post.

Photos showed the happily-married couple kissing on the dancefloor and cutting their three-tiered wedding cake, with the caption: ‘A love that never stopped growing from the moment we laid eyes on each other, and never will.

‘September 20th, 2025, our dreams became reality.’

Alexis Ohanian

Seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams will return to Centre Court after a four-year hiatus, and her husband, tech entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian, is sure to be cheering her on.

The American, who married the Reddit co-founder in 2017, stepped back from tennis in 2022 to focus on her family and welcomed the couple’s second child, daughter Adira, the following year.

She was announced as a wildcard in the doubles with her sister on June 16 before taking the eighth and final slot in the singles five days later.

Alexis and Serena first met when they ran into each other at a hotel in Rome in May of 2015, and they began dating not long afterwards.

The pair got engaged in December of 2016, and they welcomed daughter Olympia the following September.

The two subsequently tied the knot during a star-studded wedding ceremony that took place in New Orleans that November.

Ohanian is known to express his love and support for his wife through sweet public gestures – in 2018, he celebrated both her sporting and maternal abilities by surprising her with four giant billboards along a freeway in California.

Georgios Frangulis

Georgios Frangulis is likely to keep Alexis company at Wimbledon this year, after Aryna Sabalenka’s hunky fiancé proposed with a huge diamond ring in March.

The Belarusian tennis pro, 28, went public with their romance in May 2024, sharing a photo of her and Georgios after she fell to Iga Swiatek in the Italian Open.

That came two months after her ex-boyfriend, Belarusian ice hockey star Konstantin Koltsov, died after jumping from a hotel balcony in Miami in a tragedy that left the tennis star shattered.

In July 2024, Aryna described Georgios as the ‘love of my life’ after the couple enjoyed a holiday following an injury that forced her to withdraw from Wimbledon that year.

Born in Brazil, Georgios is the founder of superfood brand Oakberry, which sponsored the Haas F1 team and formed a partnership with Sabalenka after the romance began, and she created an acai bowl of her own for the brand.

He studied law before becoming an entrepreneur and has a strong interest in motor sport, having driven in 128 races of Brazil’s Porsche 911 GT3 Cup competition.

Georgios often posts touching messages to his partner on Instagram, writing ‘I’m in love with the queen of NY’ when the pair were photographed together after she won the 2024 US Open.

When Sabalenka captioned a post showing them together with ‘Tis the season for silly couples pictures, good outfits, and great food,’ he responded with, ‘Always silly never boring, te amo,’ using the Portuguese term for ‘I love you’.

On March 4, Georgios asked Aryna to marry him in a romantic setting, while surrounded by flowers and candles,

The world No 1 appeared to be totally caught by surprise when her Brazilian fiancé went down on bended knee on Wednesday, covering her face with her hands before the Brazilian entrepreneur showed her the stunning engagement ring.

Sabalenka could not stop smiling as she embraced and kissed Frangulis while they stood near a candlelit swimming pool decorated with flowers.

The Belarusian star posted a clip to Instagram with the caption, ‘You & me forever’ with an infinity emoji, wedding ring and white heart.

Her reveal drew messages of congratulations from Novak Djokovic and his wife Jelena, Hollywood star Eiza Gonzalez and men’s tennis star Ben Shelton.

Groomsman 'shoots two' at wedding in row over eating meatballs with his hands | News US
The reported shooting happened during a wedding reception at the Aria Business Center in Milwaukee (Picture: Facebook/WISN)

Wedding receptions can go a little awry if you’re not careful. Down the years they’ve been known to be derailed by drunk bridesmaids, dodgy DJs, shocking speeches and poorly thought-out seating plans. This Wisconsin ceremony, however, takes the (wedding) cake.

A wedding held recently in Milwaukee reportedly descended into utter chaos and gunfire after a row that prosecutors say began because a groomsman started sloppily eating meatballs with his hands.

Don’t worry – you read that right. No need to re-read it.

Police are now searching for 41-year-old Thomas Redrick Williams, who is accused of shooting and injuring two people during an altercation at the reception before fleeing the scene.

He is wanted on suspicion of reckless injury with use of a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon and bail jumping, Daily Mail reports.

The incident happened on June 20 at the Aria Business Center in Milwaukee, where officers arrived to find a man and a woman with gunshot wounds.

According to a criminal complaint that was lodged on that evening, the confrontation started in the kitchen when the bride’s cousin allegedly spotted Williams helping himself to meatballs with his hands and told him he should use a plate and cutlery instead.

Using your hands to eat meatballs isn’t generally considered a criminal offence but what prosecutors allege happened next certainly is.

Police say the exchange quickly escalated, with the woman telling officers that Williams punched her after she challenged him.

Her brother-in-law stepped in as the argument became physical.

Prosecutors say that Williams then pulled out a gun and opened fire. The woman was shot in the arm and leg, while the man was hit in the back of the neck. Both survived after being taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The bride allegedly witnessed the shooting before following Williams outside as he tried to leave, confronting him beside his car and grabbing his key fob in an attempt to stop him driving away.

It apparently worked, at least partly, as Williams allegedly abandoned the car and fled the scene on foot instead.

Police searched the vehicle, which is registered to Williams’ wife. Investigators say that they found a Taurus 9mm handgun.

His wife later told officers that the pair had attended the wedding together and that Williams dropped her at home before returning with her car.

Authorities say Williams was already out on bond in a separate case when the shooting happened and a warrant has since been issued for his arrest. As of Monday, jail records showed that he had not been taken into custody.

Footage broadcast by local station 12 News showed the visibly distressed bride outside the venue after the shooting, while neighbours were left stunned that a wedding celebration had ended in such a shocking demonstration of violence.

‘For a wedding to be shot up like that is ridiculous,’ local resident Robert told local TV news station WISN 12 News. ‘A wedding day is supposed to be something that two people have to care and love each other, and for someone to disrupt that is disrupting a family.’

World Cup sparks family tensions as households split over teams

Published

on

Daily Mirror

A study of 2,000 adults shows a quarter of UK households are split in their World Cup 2026 allegiances adding tension to matchday viewing.

Families are bracing themselves for a summer of divided loyalties – with a quarter of UK households home to people backing rival nations in the World Cup this summer.

A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that 25% believe split allegiances create tension on matchday. Meanwhile, 11% dread the embarrassment of watching their team lose to a family rival.

Despite the fierce national rivalry, the research, commissioned by Tesco Mobile, discovered that fans still crave sharing those landmark moments with their nearest and dearest. A whopping 78% immediately reach for their phone following a pivotal moment, whether it’s a last-minute goal or a contentious red card.

Furthermore, 82% said being able to effortlessly get in touch with friends and family makes them feel more connected during major sporting occasions, even when watching from different locations.

For 13% tuning into this summer’s tournament from abroad – either in the stadium or while on holiday – staying connected overseas is also a pressing concern.

Laura Joseph from Tesco Mobile, which has given roaming fees a red card, allowing customers to use their UK data, minutes and texts in 48 destinations across the EU and beyond at no extra cost, said: “We’re keeping families connected this summer – even when loyalties are divided.

“Moments like these are meant to be shared, whether you’re celebrating together or supporting different teams.

“With Home from Home and reduced roaming in the USA and Canada, our customers can stay connected and enjoy every moment without worrying about unexpected charges.”

This comes as the international football tournament got underway, with England attempting to improve on their previous performance where they crashed out at the quarter-final stage following a 2-1 defeat to eventual finalists France.

This marks England’s first major tournament under the fresh stewardship of Thomas Tuchel following Gareth Southgate’s departure in 2024 – the nation’s most accomplished manager since Alf Ramsey.

Meanwhile, after securing their first World Cup qualification in almost 30 years, Scotland’s journey has reached its conclusion.

Despite claiming victory over Haiti, losses to Brazil and Africa Cup of Nations champions Morocco resulted in the Scots’ elimination from the competition.

That leaves England as the sole remaining home nation in this year’s World Cup.
