The village church, between Northallerton and Stokesley, was founded around 1150.

Much of the building was rebuilt in 1860, but important medieval features survived – including the chancel arch, part of the south doorway and a rare 12th-century font carved with a bearded face and a centaur drawing a bow.

Its significance is reflected in its Grade II* listing, a status given to particularly important buildings of more than special interest.

A Norman church in North Yorkshire

St Oswald’s stands on the edge of West Rounton, a small village beneath the Cleveland Hills.

Although its present appearance is largely Victorian, the church’s Norman origins are still visible.

The most striking survival is the south doorway.

It has columns with carved capitals, a zigzag-patterned arch and distinctive Norman decoration, offering a direct link to the church built in the 12th century.

Inside, the Norman font is another highlight.

The stone bowl features carved figures, including a bearded face and a centaur aiming an arrow – an unusual survival from the medieval church.

The chancel arch, also dating from the original building, divides the nave from the chancel and is one of the clearest traces of St Oswald’s earliest history.

Victorian rebuilding

By the middle of the 19th century, the medieval church had been substantially altered and was rebuilt in 1860 by architect James Pigott Pritchett.

Pritchett, a Yorkshire architect known for church restoration and Gothic Revival work, redesigned most of the building while preserving the key Norman fragments.

The resulting church is built of stone with a Welsh slate roof.

It has a simple nave and chancel, a south porch and north vestry, with a gabled bellcote at the west end containing two arched openings for bells.

The combination of Victorian rebuilding and Norman fabric means the church tells two stories at once: the long religious history of the village and the 19th-century drive to restore and preserve parish churches.

A living village church

St Oswald’s remains an active parish church rather than simply a historic building.

Its church listing says the building is open 24 hours a day, offering a place for visitors, personal reflection and worship.

Regular Sunday services are held at 10am, varying between Book of Common Prayer Holy Communion, Common Worship Morning Prayer, a locally led Celtic service and Common Worship Holy Communion.

The church’s welcome to visitors includes a small trail to spot carved mice – an extra detail which makes it particularly appealing for families exploring the area.

Visiting St Oswald’s

St Oswald’s Church is in West Rounton, North Yorkshire, close to the A19 and within easy reach of Northallerton, Stokesley and Osmotherley.

Its preserved Norman doorway and font make it worth a stop for anyone interested in North Yorkshire’s medieval churches, while its open-door policy offers a quiet place to pause in one of the county’s smallest villages.

As opening arrangements and services can change, visitors should check the church’s online listing before making a special journey.

A British national has been rescued almost a week after devastating floods hit Nepal, which have killed more than 1,000 people.

Issuing an update on its search and rescue operation, the Nepali Army on Tuesday said: “Nepali Army rescued a total of 119 people including a British citizen through air resources today”,

The statement, posted on social media, added: “In addition to this, Nepali Army has rescued 273 foreigners along with a total of 3891 people through air resources.”

The British national has not been identified yet.

The death toll from Nepal’s floods surpassed 1,000 on Tuesday as rescuers deployed heavy machinery, helicopters and excavators to reach thousands still missing nearly ⁠a week after the Himalayan disaster tore through towns and valleys.

At least 639 people remain stranded in devastated hydropower stations that have become the focus of rescue efforts, Nepal’s disaster management authority ⁠said on Tuesday.

A glacier collapse on 26 August sent a deluge of ice, rock and mud sweeping through the nation’s border region with China.

The death toll rose to 1,050, while about 4,000 people remain missing, ​including ⁠583 foreign nationals.

The disaster left at least 2.2m tons of debris, according to a preliminary estimate by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), including parts of buildings, rocks, and sediment.

“The amount of debris shows the scale of the destruction and the challenge communities face as ⁠they clear homes, roads and public spaces and begin to rebuild,” it said.

More than 11,000 people have been rescued, and power and communication lines ​were restored ⁠in some areas, prime minister Balendra Shah said in a ‌social media post on Monday.

Shah said 279 workers were rescued from hydropower projects, with joint teams from Nepal, India and China working on search-and-rescue operations.

Jurors in Lindsay Clancy‘s murder trial told the judge they were unable to come to a unanimous decision on a verdict on the fourth day of deliberations.

The jury, made up of nine women and three men, has spent a total of 18 hours deliberating Clancy’s fate. Judge William R Sullivan sent them back out to continue weighing up their decision on Tuesday morning.

The jury must decide whether Clancy is guilty of three murder counts after the former labor and delivery nurse killed her children Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, eight months, using exercise bands at her home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023. 

Clancy has pleaded not guilty in her case, citing postpartum depression, psychosis and overmedication by prescribers. Prosecutors acknowledged that Clancy was mentally ill, but maintain that she knew what she was doing at the time of the killings.

The jury, who are non-sequestered, heard five grueling weeks of evidence from doctors, psychiatry experts, police, friends and family before they broke for deliberations. 

Clancy’s defense attorney Kevin Reddington told reporters that he was ‘confident in this jury’ and that ‘they’re doing a great job working on the case,’ outside of the Plymouth County Superior Courthouse yesterday. ‘They’ve been focused and dedicated throughout the whole trial,’ he said.

‘Members of the jury I’ve got your question and the question is, “After many hours of deliberation we are unable to come to a unanimous decision,”‘ Judge William Sullivan said.

He acknowledged the length of the trial, but ordered the jury to continue deliberations and sent them back.

‘I brought you back out because I know that this was a long trial, alright. I know that there were over 80 witness, there were over 300 exhibits, but because of that I’m going to ask you to back out, keeping in mind all of the instructions that I gave you, to go out and to continue you deliberations,’ Sullivan said.

The panel of 12, made up of nine women and three men, must reach a unanimous decision on whether Clancy is guilty of murder, manslaughter or not criminally responsible for her actions.

If the jury is unable to reach a verdict, the judge will eventually be forced to declare a mistrial.

The jury had deliberated for 18 hours when they told the judge they could not reach a unanimous verdict.

The group has not be sequestered during discussions.

What happened to the Clancy children?

On January 24, 2023, Clancy announced she’d had an exhausting day looking after their three young children so she asked husband Patrick if he didn’t mind going out on an errand. He just needed to pick up some children’s medicine and a takeout dinner order as she’d been too tired to cook, she told him.

Patrick, 36, who worked in software sales for Microsoft, was happy to oblige. But when he returned to their home in the well-to-do Boston coastal suburb of Duxbury less than an hour later at around 6pm, he discovered that their happy family existence had been snuffed out in an act of almost unimaginable violence.

After going upstairs to find his wife, who he imagined was giving the children a bath, he discovered their second-floor bedroom door was locked and had to force his way in. Inside, there was blood on the floor, a bloody knife on the nightstand and the room was chilly as a window had been left open.

He ran downstairs to find his wife lying barely conscious outside. She had cut her wrists and neck before jumping out of the window, falling some 20ft onto frozen ground. She told him she’d tried to kill herself, adding – when he asked – that the children were in the basement.

Patrick stayed by her side for the next 10 minutes after dialing 911, convinced that she might die before the paramedics arrived.

Only when they turned up did he hurry inside to find the children – five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and Callan, just eight months. They were indeed in the basement – they had all been strangled with resistance bands.

‘She knew what she did was wrong. She could conform her behavior to the law and chose not to,’ Sprague said.

‘She didn’t expect to have any consequences because she expected to die with her children.

‘You know it was deliberate premeditation because of the way she killed them and the way they died.’

Sprague continued: ‘She didn’t see them in that moment as individual human beings with rights, with dreams, with futures.

‘She didn’t bring them up to their beds; she left them, discarded on the basement floor, like broken toys, like she was done playing the game. You know, to a moral certainty, she is guilty.’

One member of the jury appeared to wipe away tears during the closing argument.

Cardiff City have confirmed another outgoing deal on transfer deadline day, with midfielder Cody Twose joining Haverfordwest County on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old has spent virtually his entire footballing journey with the Bluebirds, having joined the club at the age of nine, and this move represents an important next step in his development as he looks to secure regular senior football.

Haverfordwest have confirmed that Twose will spend the remainder of the campaign with them in the Novira Cymru Premier, giving the midfielder his first experience of a sustained run of first-team football.

Twose has been a prominent figure through the various age groups at Cardiff and has already had a taste of senior football.

He made his Cardiff first-team debut in August 2024, coming off the bench in the second half of the Carabao Cup tie against Southampton.

He has also represented Wales at a number of age-group levels.

Haverfordwest manager Tony Pennock believes Twose can provide an important boost to his midfield, particularly with Clayton Green set to be unavailable for the next few months.

“Cody is an exciting prospect who has been at Cardiff City since he was nine,” Pennock said.

“Cody can play throughout midfield and will add to our options now that Clayton Green is going to be unavailable for the next few months.

“He has represented Wales at several age groups, and this being his first loan will hopefully give him the experiences needed to progress his career.”

Twose has also revealed that he had been considering a number of options before deciding Haverfordwest was the right move for him.

“I’m excited to join the club. There’s good quality in the group,” he said.

“Today’s session was really good, getting to know the boys, and I’m looking forward to taking it into the games now.

“I’ve been looking at a few moves, and this came up and I thought it was right for me.

“I think I’ve made the right decision, with the training today and the way the gaffer has spoken to me, and I’m really excited to get going.”

This is not the first occasion Fernandez has been accused of underhand tactics, having elbowed Man City newcomer Elliott Anderson in the back during the World Cup clash between England and Argentina.

The foul went unpunished, much to the fury of England players and staff, with Fernandez escaping a yellow card for the incident.

A newborn baby girl found dead at a Sheffield house was stabbed to death, police have revealed, as detectives continue to question five people over her murder.

The infant was discovered at a property in Holywell Heights, Wincobank, after South Yorkshire Police received a 999 call at 5.58am on Sunday reporting concerns for the safety of a baby.

A forensic post-mortem examination has since established that the child died from stab wounds.

Seven people, aged between 15 and 38, were arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery. 

Two of those arrested, aged 26 and 37, have since been released on bail, while detectives obtained a warrant allowing them to keep the other five suspects in custody for longer.

The grim discovery shocked the neighbourhood, where residents described the three-bedroom property as regularly being occupied by a large number of people.

One neighbour said the house had been rented by a Slovakian family who moved in around eight months ago.

She claimed there could sometimes be as many as 12 people inside the relatively small home, including children and adults.

It is believed the smart property in the Wincobank area of Sheffield was being rented by a Slovakian family

The neighbour said she had never noticed a woman who appeared to be pregnant living at the address.

She also claimed the occupants had left the property before officers arrived on Sunday morning.

‘There are loads of them in the house, they are always in and out,’ she said.

‘The baby died at 10pm, a policeman told me. And the family were all leaving after it happened.

‘Police have taken my CCTV, but I have seen it. The eldest son and his girlfriend left about 4am on the Sunday.

‘Then the mum and about five others left shortly before 6am. And then the police arrived.’

The resident said she later witnessed officers carrying the infant from the house, wrapped in blankets, at around 1pm.

‘Every person has left the house, abandoning the baby,’ she added.

Another neighbour said the number of people staying at the address had appeared unusually high.

‘People were crammed in that house at times. We have seen ten or 12 people living and sleeping there at times. It is just a smallish three- bedroom house, so I can’t imagine the sleeping arrangements.’

A further resident said she knew the family only casually and described them as Slovakian.

‘I only knew the family to say “hello” to. They are Slovakian. 

‘I’m not aware of any of them working, and they would come and go all through the day and night, every day of the week.’It is dreadful what has happened, that a poor little girl has died. It has really traumatised by daughter.’

Police remained at the property as forensic officers examined the scene, with cordons put in place around the smart end-mews home.

A South Yorkshire Police dog handler was also seen searching surrounding gardens and bins with a cadaver dog.

Detectives are now working to establish exactly what happened to the baby and who was responsible for her death.

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward said: ‘We recognise this is deeply distressing for those who would have loved to have a chance to love this baby girl, for the emergency services who responded and for the community who will inevitably be shocked by this incident.

‘Everyone involved in responding to this tragedy – from the first officers and paramedics on the scene to the detectives now leading the investigation – has felt the profound impact of this investigation.

‘Our commitment to this little girl is unwavering. We will confront every difficult and distressing challenge and pursue every line of inquiry with determination and care to secure justice for her.

‘We know the local community will hold her in their thoughts and support us as we work through this complex investigation.’

Detective Chief Inspector Emma Knight, of South Yorkshire Police, previously urged residents not to speculate while officers continued their work.

She said: ‘We are aware news of this will be deeply concerning and I want to reassure our local communities that we have a dedicated team of detectives and officers hard at work to ensure justice is secured for the baby girl at the heart of this investigation.

‘As part of our investigation seven people have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

‘All of them remain in police custody at this time. We are working to determine the ages of some of those arrested.’

Police have appealed for anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
