Search expands for girl swept away by wave in Southern California

A search expanded on Wednesday for a teenage girl swept into the ocean by a large wave off Southern California‘s coast, as dangerous high surf conditions persist.

The incident occurred Tuesday evening at Treasure Island Beach in Laguna Beach, where the girl, her mother, and brother were walking along the sand. All three were pulled into the water, Laguna Beach Marine Safety Chief Kai Bond said Wednesday.

Two people managed to rescue the mother and son, who are now in stable condition. One man who aided the family subsequently required rescue himself from powerful 10-foot (3-meter) waves by a city lifeguard.

Many of Southern California’s beaches are expected to see 5-to 8-foot waves through at least Thursday night

“We’re expanding our search to include adjacent beaches, and we’re using divers, rescue vessels and air resources to search the area. But at this point we haven’t found her,” Bond said.

Laguna Beach Marine Safety is getting help from the Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard, Bond said.

Many of Southern California’s beaches are expected to see 5-to 8-foot (1.5-2.5 meter) waves through at least Thursday night, the National Weather Service said in Wednesday surf reports, and still higher in some places. The beach city of Malibu could see waves of up to 10 feet (3 meters), the service said.

In Orange County, where the city of Laguna Beach is located, the surf height is normally below 6 feet (about 2 meters), said Philip Gonsalves, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. He said the surf in Orange County had already peaked at 10 feet and was expected to start trending lower within the next 24 hours.

The surf has been particularly high along beaches facing south or southwest as large swells from the Southern Hemisphere’s winter storms reach the area, he said.

Robert Bush: Legacy funeral boss ‘left baby’s remains on floor for two years’

Published

on

Bush’s fraudulent activity was laid out to the court, detailing how he gave 46 families the wrong ashes and 11 were given nothing at all.

Prosecutor Chris Paxton KC said the total monetary value of the fraud was £86,868 and that Bush had conned 226 people who paid him for funeral plans, pocketing more than £550,000 over an 11-year period.

Among the victims was Shelley Chearman, who lost her husband Alan.

She told Bush: “You fooled a lot of people in Hull with your mild manner, when in fact you are a cruel conman. You use people’s grief to fund your lifestyle.”

Outlining the case on Monday, Paxton told the court bodies had been discovered “on the racks” of a cold storage area and one was found on a stretcher on the floor.

The vast majority were “uncovered and in varying states of decomposition” and the funeral home was “dirty and unkempt”.

The 48-year-old’s crimes were discovered by chance while he was on holiday, after two funeral directors tipped off police.

Bush, of Otley, West Yorkshire, was arrested when he landed at Heathrow Airport days later and told police he had debts of about £90,000, Paxton said.

TikTok roasts Airbnb hosts over ‘obnoxious’ inspection videos

TikTok roasts Airbnb hosts over ‘obnoxious’ inspection videos

A pair of Airbnb hosts who record themselves inspecting their accommodation after guests depart have gone viral for their strict house rules.

Cassie and Jon, a couple in their early twenties, document themselves doing a post-checkout clean of their property in Glennville, Georgia, remarking on everything from how clean the guests have left the toilet to what snacks have been eaten and whether the furniture is out of place.

TikTok viewers have roasted the couple for their extreme attention to detail, since they have strict house rules and sometimes complain about what state the guests leave the property in after checkout.

One video shows the couple criticizing their checked-out guests for leaving the TV remote out of place, for “disrespecting the house rules” by leaving a box of leftovers in the fridge and for moving the ottoman a few inches closer to the couch.

“It is so simple to put your trash in the trash can,” Cassie said in one video, remarking on pizza boxes left on the counter. “The pillows and the blankets are all out of place,” Jon said in another clip.

“Y’all need to lighten up,” one person commented. “Why do I feel like you’d be mad if they used the blankets?” said another.

“Can [guests] sit on the toilet when they need it?” joked a third. “They USED the SPACE?!”

“I was defending y’all bc I thought it was a skit. Now I have to go apologize to people,” quipped another. “Honestly this is so obnoxious.”

Since Cassie and Jon’s videos have gone viral, other content creators have parodied the couple, skewering their strict house rules and their reactions when the accommodation has been lived in.

The content creator @daadisnacks criticized the couple for complaining about small details when they charge a $50 cleaning fee per stay. “Influencers run an Airbnb with more rules than a maximum security prison,” he captioned the post.

“Oh my god, you guys, the guests who paid $350 to use our home, used our home, and I’m literally shaking,” he said in the skit.

@ambercatherphoto also recreated the videos, telling the camera:

“Hey Y’all, we’re gonna go in and check out and see how bad these renters messed up the Airbnb…

“We already know the renters had a dog or some kids because this stick was out of place in the yard… can’t imagine what they’ve done inside.”

Later in the video, the content creator, in character as Jon, comments on how the ottoman has been moved a few inches.

“They moved the furniture! That’s house rule number 71!” they quipped to the camera. “Look at all the laundry in the laundry basket… they were here for two weeks.. How many showers did they need?”

The Independent has reached out to Airbnb and Cassie and Jon for comment.

Two drinks you should avoid in summer to help with sleep

Two drinks you should avoid in summer to help with sleep

To keep cool in the hot weather, many people enjoy always having an iced drink on hand.

Brits are being told to avoid two drinks throughout the summer, as they can often make you feel worse.

Drinks that are often a go-to during the summer can cause dehydration and disrupt your sleep, so it might be best to stick to water on the hottest days.

The British Red Cross says you should stay away from alcohol and caffeine. (Image: Getty)

What drinks should you avoid during the summer?

The British Red Cross has urged people to avoid drinking caffeinated drinks and alcohol when it is hot out.

You might want to think twice about grabbing an iced latte or cocktail while it is so hot out.

It said: “Alcohol often goes hand in hand with sunny weather but, it is advised to limit consumption especially in the evening but causes poorer quality of sleep.

“Caffeinated drinks are diuretics and may encourage your body to lose fluids, risking dehydration as well as increase your body temperatures.”

The British Red Cross added that sticking to a normal routine can also help you throughout the heatwave.

While you might feel more tired during the summer, as your body is using more energy to regulate your internal temperature, you should avoid taking naps to stop disrupting your normal sleep patterns.

It said: “Hot weather can often mean your everyday routine goes out the window but eating and going to bed later may affect the quality of sleep.

“Try to stick to your usual eating and bed times and keep the same night-time routine.”

How to sleep throughout the summer

You can also try to make it easier to sleep by keeping the blinds or curtains in your bedroom closed during the day.

During the evening, you can open the windows to let in a breeze.

You can use thin cotton sheets on your bed and wear loose-fitting cotton or linen pyjamas to cool you down.

You might want to keep some bedding close by, as your body temperature naturally falls during the night and you can often wake up feeling cold.

Will you be avoiding your usual iced latte and cold pint throughout the summer? Let us know in the comments.

AMANDA PLATELL: Adam Ramsay-Peaty’s latest display of self-indulgence was so inappropriate – especially in front of Madeleine McCann’s parents. There’s only one way for him to turn this round

AMANDA PLATELL: Adam Ramsay-Peaty's latest display of self-indulgence was so inappropriate - especially in front of Madeleine McCann's parents. There's only one way for him to turn this round

The sight of our once heroic Olympian Adam Ramsay-Peaty blubbing poolside after humiliatingly collecting a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games was a pitiful, unedifying sight.

He didn’t help his cause by then blaming his failure on the fallout with his own family over a protracted row last November over the arrangements for his wedding to Gordon Ramsay‘s daughter Holly, 26.

This display of self-indulgence looked all the more inappropriate given that two other British competitors had had to overcome far more serious obstacles to represent their country at the games.

Take the case of Sean McCann, 21. He is the little brother of Madeleine McCann, the girl who went missing at the age of three when she was on holiday with her parents and younger siblings in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz in 2007.

Kate and Gerry McCann, along with Sean’s twin sister Amelie, set aside the family tragedy to cheer on their son as he competed in the 400m freestyle event, Kate was wearing a white T-shirt emblazoned with the words, ‘Yes sir, I can boogie’, and Sean showed he could, too, finishing fourth in his heat, a performance good enough to ensure he made the final.

Meanwhile, Archie Goodburn, 25, the Scottish 50m breaststroke record holder, also made the final of his event despite having been diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour two years ago.

Goodburn, who recently graduated from Edinburgh University with a first in chemical engineering, fought hard to be given access to a new course of treatment that has slowed the growth of his tumours and ultimately finished joint seventh – or ‘joint last’, as he so modestly put it.

Given his health issues, it represented a performance of herculean proportions.

For Adam Ramsay-Peaty to play the tearful victim in such a context is nothing short of pitiful – not to say a PR disaster for him.

The McCanns would have given anything to witness their son’s shining achievement with their whole family together – including Madeleine, who would now be 23 if she had not been abducted, never to be seen again.

In contrast to their poignant display of celebration, Ramsay-Peaty emerged from the pool sobbing and then proceeded to hug his pregnant wife before bending down to kiss her baby bump.

Was it a genuine act of affection or just a photo op to draw attention away from an abysmal race time that was three seconds – an eternity in the realms of top-level swimming – off his world record?

At a press conference later, Ramsay-Peaty – apparently full of self-pity – effectively blamed his poor form on his own family, saying: ‘It’s hard because I know how hard I’ve worked. I know the s*** I’ve been through, which is no fault of my own. It does take a toll.’

Shockingly, this was the first time his mum and dad had not watched him compete from poolside at a major competition, with insiders saying Adam had even gone so far as to tell them to stay away.

Instead, Caroline and Mark Peaty watched it on TV in their modest Uttoxeter council house, 260 miles away as the crow flies but light years away when compared with their son’s new world of Ramsay family mansions.

It was a shockingly cold-blooded rejection of his own flesh and blood: the parents who, recognising his swimming genius, devoted their lives to giving their son the chances in life they – as a working class family – had never had.

His mum used to get up at 4am every morning to drive him 40-minutes to the swimming club for training. That she should be forced to watch him race on the telly beggars belief.

And that is not the worst of it. There are now even claims that Caroline and Mark – who found out that their son’s wife was pregnant by text – are now so cut adrift they have no expectations of getting to know – or even see – his newborn child, their grandchild.

His mother has even been stopped from seeing Adam’s first child, George, five, by a former relationship. Bear in mind that this is a child his mum used to babysit.

A Peaty relative who spoke to the Daily Mail on condition of anonymity said: ‘The hurt you feel over a medal does not compare to the hurt you have caused your mother. Just take accountability for your own actions for once, Adam, instead of blaming us.

‘The hurt you inflicted on her when you stopped her from seeing her grandson (George) out of spite, who she loves with every fibre of her being, and stopped from watching you marry.

‘You made comments to friends that we would try and disrupt your Games. We haven’t been there. To blame us for your failure is not right Adam. Don’t blame your family for your bronze. You need to look closer to home and in the mirror.’

Following his disappointing performance in his heat, Ramsay-Peaty insisted that he had ‘a battle plan’ ahead of yesterday’s 50m breaststroke final.

‘In sport it’s not really about when you get beat down, it’s about how long you actually take to put it into perspective and turn it around,’ he added on Sunday. ‘We’re on a great trajectory for tomorrow.’

This turned out to be a little over-optimistic. Not only did Adam miss out on gold but had to settle for bronze rather than silver.

His long-suffering mother Caroline broke her silence after he blamed his bitter family feud on failing to win gold at the Commonwealth Games.

In a rare social media post, Caroline wrote that she and Adam’s dad Mark will always ‘continue to support Adam from afar’. Adding, ‘He’s our son whom we love.’

But the question on virtually everyone else’s lips is: Has time finally caught up with a man who may have broken 14 world records but is now aged 31?

After all, the silver medal winner who beat him into third place was Filip Nowacki, an 18-year-old British schoolboy still waiting for his A-level results.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 phone, reviewed by a tech critic

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 phone, reviewed by a tech critic

Samsung has just released its latest trio of folding phones available for pre-order now and on sale from Friday 7 August. While two are updates to existing models, one is completely different, with a new shape and size that could become a template for future models from other brands – including Apple.

Folding phones are designed for greater convenience. There are two main styles: a regular-sized phone that folds in half to easily fit into a pocket – which have come to be called Flip phones – and regular-sized handsets which fold out into mini-tablets. The latter is usually called Fold phones.

Samsung’s new range is led by the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, which is narrow and remarkably thin – when opened it measures just 4.1mm (though that doesn’t include the three cameras on the back). And there’s a new pocketable model, the Galaxy Z Flip8, with an external screen that’s more capable than ever, so you can do a lot without opening the phone.

The idea of a Fold phone is that you can leave your tablet at home and utilise the extra screen space on the unfolded phone. This works well, but there’s an issue: when opened, a Fold phone’s inner screen is more or less square, which some feel is less pleasing to the eye, especially if you want to use the device to watch a movie, for instance.

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite 5 For Galaxy
  • Display: Cover display 5.5in OLED, 120Hz, 1,248 x 1,972 pixels, 428ppi, internal display 7.7in OLED120Hz, 1,828 x 2,448 pixels, 403ppi
  • Storage: 256GB / 512GB /1TB
  • Size: Folded – 81.9 x 123.9 x 9.7 mm, Unfolded – 161.4 x 123.9 x 4.5 mm
  • Weight: 201g
  • Rear cameras: 50MP main, 50MP ultra wide
  • Cover display camera: 10MP
  • Internal display camera: 10MP
  • Colours: Graphite, Cream, Lavender, Pistachio

The new Samsung addresses this in an all-new way. The Galaxy Fold8 is shorter and wider than the more traditionally shaped Galaxy Fold8 Ultra, though at 4.5mm thick when open, it’s still a very thin device. But the new shape means that when it’s opened, it has the same 4:3 screen aspect ratio as a conventional tablet. Samsung doesn’t make a super-small tablet, but the new phone looks like a small version of Apple’s iPad mini when it’s open.

Talking of Apple, the rumour mill suggests very strongly that this September will see the launch of the Cupertino giant’s first foldable, and it seems it may plump for near-identical proportions to this one. If that’s right, Samsung will benefit, too. Not only does a rising tide lift all boats, but having something similar-looking that will appeal to Android diehards will surely garner sales. Samsung is getting its response in first.

Is this the moment to fall for a foldable? Is the niche market about to grow? Read on.

samsung fold8 review

David Phelan

I’ve been testing the Galaxy Z Fold8 for more than a week now, and it has been my daily driver. I set it up, transferred data from an earlier Galaxy and started using it quickly.

I’ve studied the design and the notably different screen orientation, judging whether the new design is practical, inviting and comfortable to use. I’ve checked out the software to see how well it works on inner and outer displays. I’ve tested the phone’s performance to see how it handled video playback, graphics-intensive games and day-to-day tasks like sending emails and, you know, making phone calls. Finally, I’ve monitored the battery to see how it copes, and whether it is struggling by the end of the day, or earlier.

What we love: Hand-friendly shape, great screen when open, strong performance, and near-invisible screen crease

Take note: Not cheap, and not all apps optimised for both screens

The new shape is the same as a passport, though a touch smaller in width and height. As such, it’s initially a bit surprising to look at. Strange, even. But as soon as you open it, it suddenly makes sense, and the transformation from a wide handset to a small but perfectly proportioned tablet is tremendous.

It feels slim yet reassuringly solid when open, and when the weight is spread between two hands, it’s remarkably light (the lightest Fold phone Samsung has made yet, in fact). Closed, the weight feels acceptable for a phone – it’s only a few grams lighter than an iPhone 17 Pro or Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra.

It’s easy to use one-handed – both in terms of weight and reachability – while there’s an advanced setting to shrink the screen content to one corner.

The phone – and the larger Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra – introduces a new feature under the folding display, called Flex Titanium. This titanium alloy film and titanium plate not only strengthens the fold, but also improves the visual effects in the crease. This crease is something which has dogged folding phones from the start, and while it’s still not completely invisible, you now have to look much harder to see it – a major improvement.

Samsung has also worked to make the new foldable easier to open. Some foldables have had such tight hinges that it takes work to prise them open. Here, there are slightly bigger gaps between the two halves, which makes things simpler.

Best Samsung Galaxy z Fold8 pre-order deals

The redesigned hinge limits the tension of its predecessors, making the two halves easier to separate. It’s a subtle but welcome change – and don’t worry, the phone’s not going to spring open on you.

There’s a hole-punch camera at the top of both the cover and internal displays. It’s capable of facial recognition, so you can set the phone to unlock, whether open or closed. There’s also a fingerprint sensor in the power button on the edge. Both work quickly and effectively.

Owing to the cameras, the fold8 doesn’t lay fully flat on a table. For instance, it rocks when you type on it. While a case may reduce this effect, typing with the phone open in your hands is easier.

The phone comes in four colours: lavender, which I’ve been testing, cream, graphite and pistachio. All look great, with a subtle, pastel aesthetic. The pistachio colour – a quiet but eye-catching pale green – is exclusive to Samsung.com, and sensational. Samsung matches the home screen to the hardware colour, which is a nice touch.

samsung fold8

David Phelan

The fold8’ screen measures 7.6 inches, compared to Apple’s first iPad mini which had a 7.9-inch display. The bezels framing the screen are very thin, and the device feels a lot more compact than a traditional tablet.

It’s big enough to watch content like Netflix, which is pre-loaded with your account. There are still evident black lines on either side, but they are much less obvious than on previous foldables. There’s the option to watch on the cover display, which thins black lines with its 16:10 ratio, but the trade-off is the smaller 5.5-inch screen.

While the taller Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra with its almost-square open screen may be better for multitasking and productivity, the fold8 shape excels beyond watching movies. Books work well in portrait orientation, and it’s excellent for playing games.

Many apps are optimised so that as you open the phone, they reformat to fill the larger display, adjusting what’s on screen intelligently rather than just enlarging it. Samsung’s software also allows multiple apps to open simultaneously on the larger screen.

The display is bright – capable of 3,000 nits peak brightness – so even sunny days don’t defeat it. Plus, there’s an anti-reflective coating on the folding screen.

samsung fold8

David Phelan/The Standard

Where the larger and pricier Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra has three cameras on the back, this has two, perhaps because there’s less space.

It means there’s a main camera and an ultrawide, both with 50-megapixel sensors, but no telephoto camera. The main camera on the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra manages a 200-megpixel sensor, which perhaps contributes to the U-word in the name.

Samsung is skilled with photography, particularly in places that other phone cameras fail – including low light and night-time shooting.

The photo screen in the camera shows three zoom levels: 0.6 (ultra-wide), 1 (full-frame of the main camera), and 2, which crops to the centre of the frame to deliver a 12.5-megapixel image.

Qualcomm’s latest flagship chip is on board here, the Snapdragon 8 Elite 5, previously seen on the Galaxy S26 Ultra and, as then, optimised “for Galaxy” to work smoothly and seamlessly here.

Whatever I’ve done on the phone has been fast and stutter-free, with butter-smooth video playback and slick game-playing.

Every action is instant, from opening apps to snapping photos.

Samsung has adopted a new battery technology for this device. This is the company’s first use of a silicon-carbon battery (competitors have already adopted this tech). Silicon-carbon allows greater capacity than lithium-ion permits, so longer battery life from thinner, smaller cells is possible.

The result is a battery that lasts all day with ease, leaving the phone with 20 per cent charge at the end of an average day for me.

Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 worth it?

samsung fold8 review

David Phelan

Samsung’s new phone is outstanding, delivering an original look and shape that is wholly winning. If it looks unusual at first, it quickly becomes second-nature when you open it – and suddenly other folding phones look unnatural.

Boasting a bright display with tiny bezels and a super-slim profile, the foldable is lightweight and user-friendly. The perceptible reduction of the crease that other foldables have is a real bonus.

The cameras are strong, even if they lack the 200-megapixel snapper found on the Z Fold8 Ultra, and the super-fast processor inside is impressive. The latest battery technology means the phone runs all day smoothly.

At £1,699, this is not a cheap phone, but I’d argue that the technology crammed in makes it strong value, if you can afford it.

This is a handsome, strikingly original phone with everything going for it. Not only is this the best foldable on the market, but its performance, versatility and gorgeous design also make it a strong contender for the best Android smartphone, full stop.
