Swinney fails to win majority, but says SNP ‘emphatically’ won Holyrood election

He continued: “My message to Downing Street tonight is very, very clear – they have got a lot of listening to do to the fact that Labour have been hammered here in Scotland and an SNP Government, after 19 years in office, has just been emphatically returned to office, and Scotland needs respect as a consequence of that election outcome.”

Jury told baby suffered buttock bite mark and multiple injuries weeks before he died

Published

on

Belfast Live

A pathologist determined the toddler had “highly unusual” injuries before his death

A baby who died after allegedly suffering sustained abuse had what a pathologist described as a “human bite mark” on his buttock just weeks before his death, a jury has heard.

Baby Preston Davey was rushed into Blackpool Victoria Hospital in cardiac arrest at 6.20pm on July 27, 2023, with staff being told he had drowned in the bath. Tragically, despite an hour of frantic efforts to save him, the little boy was pronounced dead at 7.20pm.

His adoptive dad Jamie Varley, 37, appeared at Preston Crown Court accused of murdering the toddler, while partner John McGowan‑Fazackerley, 32, allegedly caused or allowed Preston’s death. Both men deny the charges, which also include multiple counts of child cruelty and sexual assault.

On Wednesday (May 13), expert witness Dr Alison Armour told Preston Crown Court that the autopsy she carried out on the baby determined the cause of his death to be acute upper airways obstruction, caused by either smothering or an object being inserted into his mouth.

The forensic Home Office pathologist, who has 39 years of experience in the field, added that the post-mortem revealed more than 40 separate internal and external injuries. The expert was also asked to review several videos and photographs taken from the defendants’ mobile phones.

One such photo, taken on June 12, 2023, showed the tot playing naked in a paddling pool in the back garden of their home on Staining Avenue, Preston. However, a close-up showed a round bruise, approximately one inch in diameter, on the little boy’s right buttock.

“It is my view that this most likely represents a human bite mark,” Dr Armour said, referring to an unmarked area of skin in the middle of the circular mark.

The jury heard a detailed account of the marks and injuries Dr Armour found during the post-mortem examination of Preston’s body. ‘Fingertip bruises’, indicative of f gripping, pinching or prodding, and a mark to his thigh consistent with a slap, were highlighted.

As was internal bruising to the toddler’s throat, described as “highly unusual” and most likely sustained within hours of Preston’s death. The pathologist ruled out the suggestion that the bruises were caused during resuscitation efforts as he did not have a heartbeat, and therefore would not have bruised, when he was intubated in hospital.

Royal Preston Hospital staff were told that Preston had drowned in the bath, but Dr Armour confirmed she did not believe there was any evidence supporting this claim, as she failed to find water in Preston’s stomach or lungs during examination to support the theory.

She also ruled out any natural cause, infection or genetic condition. Instead, she pointed out multiple signs of asphyxiation to support her findings that Preston had suffocated.

Mr Varley recorded a video at 4.45pm on the day Preston died, the court was told, showing the little boy “clearly very unwell”, according to the pathologist. The video showed Preston unresponsive, and his breathing was half the rate that would be expected of a child his age.

The baby had also suffered ‘unnatural’ injuries to his pelvic organs, Dr Armour concluded, likely inflicted within hours of his death.

Varley is accused of murder; sexual assault of a child under 13; inflicting grievous bodily harm; five counts of child cruelty; and further counts of making, taking and distributing indecent images.

McGowan-Fazackerley is accused of causing or allowing the death of a child; two counts of child cruelty; and sexual assault of a child under 13. Both men deny the allegations.

A fight scene from Marvel’s The Punisher has gone viral online after being described as the ‘worst CGI of all time’.

Co-written by and starring Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, The Punisher: One Last Kill was released as a one-off final special episode by Disney Plus on Tuesday.

Following the gun-toting vigilante Frank, who is known as The Punisher, the episode sees the antihero find himself in the crosshairs of Ma Gnucci (Judith Light), who is eager for revenge against him for the death of her family.

Taking place shortly after the events of Daredevil: Born Again’s first season, the episode has, however, received a high level of attraction for all the wrong reasons.

During one moment when Frank is thrown off a building and lands on a large metal air vent, eagle-eyed observers spotted a ‘ ‘ CGI blunder that shows Jon’s face heavily pixilated.

Reacting to the jarring moment, some viewers speculated that the show’s editors forgot to tidy up the graphics.

Writing on X, Ahmed commented: ‘Can’t believe this is a real scene from The Punisher: One Last Kill.’

Responding beneath, Rob likened the graphics to being like ‘PlayStation 3’, as Steven said he thought it ‘was surely AI’.

Another user called Rob also wrote: ‘The Punisher: One Last Kill has one of the worst CGI animations I have seen in years. Omg. Like…

‘How is it possible that Jon Bernthal turns into a PS4 graphics replica of Joel Miller from The Last Of Us?! Wtf is Disney doing?’

Buck, a fellow user, then claimed: ‘Marvel accidentally uploaded a scene from The Punisher: One Last Kill with unfinished VFX.’

Jon recently returned to our screens as the Punisher after the series originally aired on Netflix from 2017 until 2019.

The new special sees Frank become Punisher once again after being targeted by Gnucci.

Originally, the series was about the former marine seeking revenge for the deaths of his family.

After being cancelled by Netflix in 201, Disney then regained the licence for Marvel titles.

He is now also set to play the Marvel character once again in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya.

This special also comes after Bernthal released another special episode of The Bear, which he co-wrote and starred in as Mikey alongside Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they headed on a work trip to Gary, Indiana.

Metro has contacted Disney for comment.

Devotees of the BBC crime drama were recently devastated when the programme concluded following four tremendously successful series.

Debuting in 2023, Beyond Paradise features Kris Marshall reprising his Death in Paradise character, DI Humphrey Goodman, alongside Sally Bretton as Martha Lloyd, and proved an instant sensation.

It’s therefore unsurprising that supporters will be keenly anticipating news regarding additional episodes of Beyond Paradise. In the meantime, crime drama fans can currently watch the picturesque series Murder in Provence for free.

With all three episodes now accessible on ITVX, here’s what you should know about Murder in Provence, including storyline and performers, reports the Mirror.

The narrative unfolds against the stunning scenery of Aix-en-Provence, southern France, where filming took place, offering audiences ideal escapism.

Individual episodes centre on separate murder investigations, opening with a startling killing at the local university. The pair frequently deliberates over perplexing cases during mealtimes, with Marine drawing on her knowledge of criminal psychology to help resolve them.

Despite being set in France, the programme is delivered entirely in English.

The second episode sees Marine assist Antoine in revealing the truth surrounding an aristocrat’s demise, while the third follows a murder enquiry initiated after a young woman’s killing.

Viewers of Murder in Provence have expressed their opinions about the programme, with one person commenting on IMDB: “Utterly gorgeous!”

When Arsenal can win Premier League title and how many more points they need

Published

on

Wales Online

Arsenal beat West Ham 1-0 on Sunday to move three points clear at the top of the Premier League – and now have a full week to prepare for their next game against Burnley

Victory in their final two Premier League fixtures and Arsenal are champions. It is the most straightforward of messages for the Gunners following Sunday’s 1-0 victory over West Ham at the London Stadium.

They also now benefit from a full week’s rest before welcoming relegated Burnley to their ground, then making the trip to Crystal Palace on the concluding day of the top-flight campaign.

Palace, of course, face the UEFA Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano just three days later in Leipzig, so are unlikely to field their strongest side.

Should Arsenal win both remaining matches, they will finish on 85 points, making it impossible for Man City to overhaul them.

City currently sit on 74 points with three games remaining and can accumulate a maximum total of 83 points, reports Football London.

Pep Guardiola’s side face Palace tonight (Wednesday) ahead of the FA Cup final, before travelling to Bournemouth and then hosting Aston Villa on the final day of the season.

Should City drop points against the Eagles, who defeated them in last season’s FA Cup final, Arsenal could clinch the title as early as next Monday against Burnley at home.

If both City and Arsenal win, there remains a possibility the Gunners could be crowned champions next Tuesday when Bournemouth entertain City at the Vitality Stadium.

It is Andoni Iroala’s final home fixture in charge of the Cherries, and he will be keen to bow out in style.

What’s more, Bournemouth can still secure a Champions League berth.

They remain within striking distance of fifth-placed Aston Villa, and should Villa claim the Europa League title, a Champions League place would be pushed down to sixth.

Bournemouth, who are currently on a 16-match unbeaten run, are now strong favourites to take advantage following their 1-0 victory at Fulham on Saturday.

Either way, Arsenal find themselves in an extraordinarily dominant position, and it would now take a remarkable collapse for them to squander such a commanding lead.

Guardiola’s side will battle to the very end, but they face a gruelling run of fixtures over the next two weeks, and it is difficult to envisage them remaining flawless throughout.

The FA Cup also presents an opportunity to lift a trophy, so Guardiola will certainly not be underestimating the Wembley showpiece against Chelsea.

Passenger on EasyJet flight describes dramatic moment Manchester-bound plane diverted to Milan

The flight was suddenly diverted after a pilot needed ‘medical assistance’

A passenger has described the dramatic moment her flight was diverted after a pilot became ill on the trip back to Manchester Airport.

Caroline Peers was one of the hundreds onboard the EasyJet service that departed from Heraklion, Greece, at around 8.45pm yesterday (May 12).

The flight was scheduled to land in Manchester, but midway through the journey, the aircraft diverted to Milan after one of the pilots needed ‘medical assistance.’

Caroline, 52, says she could not see what exactly had happened, but recalls an announcement being made that the the first captain had fallen ill before emergency services rushed to his aid after landing.

“Oh, it was awful,” she said. “When they landed the plane, you could see all the lights and hear the sirens. It was police, ambulance and fire.

“They put a black cloth up and the police came on. We were all going around and being nosey, then the captain announced that the first pilot was OK but he was going to get checked out for safety reasons.”

According to EasyJet, passengers were put in hotels and given meals, with those who booked their own seat to be ‘reimbursed’. However, Caroline, said only a few travellers were provided with accommodation, while others had to settle with sleeping in the airport.

“There were hundreds of people all running around, trying to find out what was going on,” said Caroline, from Partington. “Because we were in the middle of the plane, there was nothing left for us. We tried everywhere.

“Me, my partner, his two kids and a lot of other people ended up sleeping on the floor of the airport. There was nothing open.

“There were old people in there. Sat on suit cases and young children too.

“I’m quite healthy and it took its toll on me. It was awful, we were tired, we weren’t getting any answers. We expected at least someone from management to be there.”

EasyJet said the captain carried out a ‘routine landing’ and medics met the plane when it landed in Italy to assess the first officer. The flight was rescheduled to this morning and Caroline is now back home.

In a statement, an easyJet spokesperson said: “Flight EZY2058 from Heraklion to Manchester diverted to Milan Malpensa due to the First Officer requiring medical assistance.

“The Captain performed a routine landing in accordance with standard operating procedures and the aircraft was met by medical services and the flight was therefore rescheduled to operate this morning.

“We did everything possible to minimise the disruption to customers, providing hotel accommodation and meals where available, and we advised anyone who booked their own that they will be reimbursed.

“The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is always our highest priority and we are sorry for any inconvenience this will have caused.”

Former UK defence secretary Ben Wallace placed on Russia’s wanted list

Former UK defence secretary Ben Wallace placed on Russia’s wanted list

Russia has added Ben Wallace, the former British defence minister, to a wanted list in connection with an unspecified criminal investigation, according to state media reports on Wednesday, which cited the Russian Interior Ministry’s database.

Mr Wallace served as the UK’s defence secretary from before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 until August 2023.

Since leaving office, he has consistently advocated for increased military support for Kyiv and has been a vocal critic of Russian aggression.

The state media reports did not provide further details regarding the investigation, and Mr Wallace has not yet responded to requests for comment.

This development follows a call last October from a regional Russian lawmaker for Mr Wallace to be placed on Russia’s international wanted list.

This demand stemmed from comments he made at the Warsaw Security Forum in September, where he suggested assisting Ukraine in carrying out a military strike on the bridge connecting southern Russia to Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.

“We have to help Ukraine have the long-range capabilities to make Crimea unviable. We need to choke the life out of Crimea.

“And if we do that, I think Putin will realise he’s got something to lose,” he said.

“We need to smash the cursed bridge.”

It is not clear how many foreign officials or public figures are on the Russian Interior Ministry’s database of wanted persons.

In 2024, independent news outlet Mediazona said the list included dozens of European politicians and officials.

The news comes as more than 100 Russian drones targeted areas of Ukraine on Wednesday, President Volodymyr Zelensky said, hours after another barrage of civilian areas killed at least eight people.

“Russia continues its strikes and is doing so brazenly — deliberately targeting our railway infrastructure and civilian sites in our cities,” Zelensky said in a post on X.

The overnight strikes targeted Ukraine’s residential and railway infrastructure in the central Dnipro and northeastern Kharkiv regions, port infrastructure in the southern Odesa region, and energy facilities in the central Poltava region, according to Zelensky.

On Tuesday, he said, 14 regions came under attack throughout the day.

“It is important to support Ukraine and not remain silent about Russia’s war. Every time the war disappears from the top of the news, it encourages Russia to become even more savage,” Zelensky said, in an apparent reference to world attention being gripped by the Iran war.

Moscow’s attacks on its neighbour are unrelenting, even as Ukraine is emboldened by its recent military accomplishments and as US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin claim — without providing evidence — that the war could be approaching the end.

Plans for ‘self-build’ plots rejected for being too far outside of village

Published

on

Cambridgeshire Live

An earlier appeal for 44 homes had been approved nearby

An inspector has rejected plans for up to five homes on the edge of a village due to the “limited scale” of the proposal.

Over Parish Council raised no objections to the plans off Station Road – but South Cambridgeshire District Council refused them for lying outside the Over “development framework”, or area inside the village that’s been earmarked for development.

A supporting statement prepared by KWA Architects on behalf of applicant Chris Whistler, claimed the council couldn’t show a five year housing supply – but they disputed this. Mr Whistler appealed their decision to the Planning Inspectorate, arguing that additional housing in Cambridgeshire “where high growth is forecast over the next few years, is absolutely necessary to meet need”.

He said the plots could also be sold as “self-build units” of which there is currently a shortfall. Inspector E Brownless said they interpreted the application as permission for “a minimum of one” and “maximum of five” homes.

Visiting the site on January 19, they said west of Station Road is “open and predominantly undeveloped” while the other side has clusters of buildings with a “noticeably stronger sense of enclosure and urban influence”.

But they said the two sides don’t share a “consistent character or pattern of development” and the site “makes a significant positive contribution to the rural character and appearance of the area”.

Building there “would unacceptably harm the prevailing spacious verdant character of the area,” they said.

Mr Whistler and KWA argued that appeals had been granted nearby in the past, despite falling outside the Over village limits.

In 2021, a plan for 44 homes off New Road submitted by Abbey Properties was approved on appeal after being refused by the council.

But inspector Brownless thought this was “of limited relevance”, as public views of this area “would be restricted by existing screening and the enclosure of the site”.

They said the plan for a maximum of five homes was not dense enough and would be, at most, three times less than the requirement for villages such as Over and “an inefficient use of the land”.

The applicant said the site had been “disused scrubland” for around 20 years, but the inspector was concerned about the “irreversible loss” of the “most versatile agricultural land”. The council argues the land is rated as good quality for farming, but this is disputed by Mr Whistler.

Inspector Brownless agreed that there was a “significant shortfall and historic unmet need” for self-build units, and housing more generally, and these “are matters which attract significant weight”.

But, they said the “benefits of the development are tempered by the modest scale of the scheme” and dismissed the appeal.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink identifies potential ‘problem’ if Chelsea hire Xabi Alonso | Football

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink identifies potential 'problem' if Chelsea hire Xabi Alonso | Football
Xabi Alonso is said to be ‘open’ to the possibility of managing Chelsea (Picture: Getty)

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink says Chelsea may encounter a ‘problem’ if they hire Xabi Alonso but refuse to ‘give him the keys’ or allow him to lead on ‘football decisions’.

Chelsea’s search for a seventh permanent manager in the space of just five years is ongoing after Liam Rosenior was relieved of his duties last month.

Rosenior enjoyed a promising start to life in the Stamford Bridge dugout but results spiralled from early February and a miserable run of five straight league defeats – without scoring a single goal – meant his position was deemed untenable.

Under-21 coach Calum McFarlane picked up the pieces from Rosenior’s turbulent 107-day tenure and has done a commendable job, steering the club into this year’s FA Cup final before holding Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at Anfield at the weekend.

But a heavy 3-1 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest served as a stark reminder of Chelsea’s desperate league position – and Stamford Bridge bosses are eager to secure a deal for Rosenior’s permanent successor sooner rather than later.

Since Rosenior’s sacking, a host of high-profile names have been linked, including the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Xavi and Andoni Iraola, with the latter confirming that this season will be his last at Bournemouth.

Alonso has also emerged as a genuine candidate in recent days and reports on Monday indicated he would be ‘open’ to the prospect of taking charge in west London.

The 44-year-old announced himself as one of the most sought-after coaches in European football at Bayer Leverkusen, but has been out of a job since parting ways with Real Madrid after only eight months in January.

‘I don’t think he did that badly at Real Madrid,’ former Chelsea striker Hasselbaink said of Alonso on Sky Sports News.

‘Obviously what is expected at Real Madrid is being at the top all season but I think he was still within touching distance of Barcelona.

‘The problem is he wants to manage how he wants to manage and he feels that the players have to follow him. Stars are a little bit different, you need the support of the club.

‘I really like that, I like that he has his way, “This is how I see it, you players are going to follow my guidance and this is how I want to play and you’re going to play in a system, you’re going to run”, and if Chelsea chooses him, you have to give him the keys.

‘I’ve always said that whoever you choose, you have to give them the keys and the players need to know that he is the decision-maker.’

Rosenior’s reign lasted only 107 days (Picture: Getty)

Asked if Chelsea’s hierarchy would be prepared to let Alonso be the key decision-maker, Hasselbaink replied: ‘That’s a question for them, but I think that’s the only way it will work.

‘Players need to know that the manager is in charge for football decisions and the moment they know that, they will run harder, they will do their best.

‘So if you’re going to choose Alonso, give him the keys and trust the process. Trust the process and let him lead.’

Liverpool v Chelsea - Premier League

Hasselbaink has a level of sympathy for Rosenior and feels strongly that the issues at Chelsea run far deeper than whoever happens to find themselves sitting in the dugout.

‘I don’t think Liam Rosenior really was the wrong person,’ he went on.

Enzo Maresca also had no credentials, he didn’t have experience, but he was absolutely magnificent. He played a certain way and he was successful.

‘He won the Europa Conference League, he won the Club World Cup, he got them in the Champions League when he left, they were in a good position.

‘What happened in that spell of time when Enzo left and Liam was there? What happened? That’s what we need to find. Why did it go suddenly like that? I cannot only be Liam’s fault.

‘That’s where they really need to have a look at what has gone wrong and we need to make that better for the next manager to come in.

‘Yes, I do agree that I prefer someone with pedigree and who has been there because it’s a big, big club with big, big players. Normally you would associate that job, when it becomes available, with a Thomas Tuchel, a Mauricio Pochettino, a Jose Mourinho, a Carlo Ancelotti, these kind of names.

‘Why are those sort of names not linked anymore? That’s what we have to think about in my opinion.’

Manchester City v Brentford - Premier League
Guardiola’s City enter the final as the overwhelming favourites (Picture: Getty)

Chelsea’s squad have a perfect opportunity to end their immensely disappointing season on a high this weekend when they take to the field against Manchester City at Wembley.

And while they undoubtedly go into the final as the underdogs, Hasselbaink is not ruling out Enzo Fernandez and Co pulling off a big upset.

‘There’s always a chance. You never know, that’s the beauty of football,’ the Dutchman, whose Chelsea side finished runners-up in the FA Cup back in 2002, explained.

‘It looks very tough on paper, it looks very hard. If you would have said to me that Chelsea would get a draw at Liverpool, play actually really well and deserve to win, I would have said, “Really?”, due to the way they’ve been playing of late.

Manchester City v Chelsea - Premier League
Chelsea drew with City in the Premier League back in January (Picture: Getty)

‘So that’s the next step for them. It’s a challenge, it’s going to be difficult, but it’s possible.

‘They went to Manchester City a few months ago and they drew that game, they played the second half exceptionally well.

‘A final is a final, you never know what can happen. It’s a one-off game so there’s everything to play for.’

Southampton FC v Chelsea FC - Premier League
Palmer needs a ‘good holiday’ after the World Cup, says Hasselbaink (Picture: Getty)

It’s proven to be Cole Palmer’s most difficult year yet since swapping City for Chelsea back in 2023, with fitness problems making for a stop-start season in which he has missed 12 games in the Premier League alone.

On Palmer’s struggles, Hasselbaink said: ‘He didn’t have a proper pre-season, that’s what it started with, then there were niggling injuries and he hasn’t really been able to get his rhythm going.

‘He’s not been able to get himself playing pain-free and he would be the first one to say that he hasn’t played his best football.

‘But he still attracts players to him when he’s on the pitch and gives free space to other players.

‘I think he needs a good holiday after the World Cup and then from there he can build himself back up.’

Gerwyn Price’s shock decision prompts Jonny Clayton to make statement

Johnny Clayton has broken his silence after Gerwyn Price pulled out of the World Cup of Darts

Darts star Johnny Clayton has revealed how much he’s looking forward to the World Cup of Darts with new team-mate Nick Kenny after Welsh icon Gerwyn Price surprisingly opted to pull out of the event.

The tournament will take place between June 11-14 at the Eissporthalle in Frankfurt, Germany. World No. 8 Price recently made himself unavailable for selection, meaning Kenny, who grew up in Cwmbran, will join forces with Clayton.

The 51-year-old Clayton took to X on Tuesday night, posting: “Ready to go again for Team Cymru at the World Cup of Darts! Me and Nick will be ready, and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Price and Clayton beat the Philippines, Hong Kong and the Netherlands to reach the World Cup final in 2025. Northern Ireland’s Josh Rock and Daryl Gurney ultimately denied Wales a third title in the showpiece game.

Kenny is a PDC Tour Card holder who is currently ranked 60th in the PDC rankings. He has qualified for seven World Championships across the BDO and the PDC, reaching the third round in 2025 where he eventually bowed out to Luke Humphries.

This is the second time in three years that Price will miss the World Cup and speculation has been rife over ‘the iceman’s’ most recent absence.

The 41-year-old posted a concerning health update after a 6-2 Premier League loss to Leeds last week. Price has since moved to dismiss that as the reason for his World Cup absence, however.

Writing after the Premier League defeat, Price said: “My focus is there, it’s just health-wise I am not in a great place at the moment,” he said. “But I am battling on and searching for some results.

“Hopefully in the next couple of weeks they will come and they will put me at ease. Then I will be able to enjoy darts again. Frustrating times.

“Time to rely on Lady Luck and see what happens over the next two weeks. Hopefully make the play-offs, but I need a lot of luck to go my way. Hopefully see you at the O2 [at the Premier League darts].

“It’s not good playing once a week and hopefully I get the results I want in three weeks’ time. This year has been great in the Premier League and it’s been a great start to the season. The crowd has got me through a lot of games but sometimes things happen you can’t control.”

World champion Luke Littler and world No. 2 Luke Humphries will represent Team England in Frankfurt. The two top-ranked players lost to Germany in the second round in 2025.

However, they enter this year’s event as the No. 1 seeds, meaning they will kick off their competition in the second round alongside the Netherlands, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

Rock and Gurney will return to Frankfurt with Northern Ireland as defending champions. Mickey Mansell, who previously turned out for Northern Ireland between 2012 and 2015 but later switched his allegiances, will play alongside William O’Connor for the Republic of Ireland.

Gary Anderson and Cameron Menzies will represent the Scots. The Dutch team are a frightening proposition for any player, boasting a line-up of Gian van Veen and Michael Van Gerwen.
