Zia Yusuf has been mocked online after launching another thinly-veiled swipe at some of his own Reform UK colleagues.

The party’s home affairs spokesman hit out at “former Tory ministers”, despite the fact that most of Reform’s senior figures served in the last Conservative government.

In a late-night rant on X, Yusuf said they were “the most nefarious people outside of those in prison”.

That seemed to be a direct attack on the likes of Robert Jenrick, Suella Braverman, Nadine Dorries, David Jones and Nadhim Zahawi, who all served in Conservative cabinets before switching to Reform.

His attack came just a day after he hit out at “deadbeat Tory ministers” in another social media post.

Yusuf’s latest tirade seems to have been triggered by the fact that Rishi Sunak and Jacob Rees-Mogg are back in the news.

Former PM Sunak won praise for hitting back at claims non-white people cannot be English, while Rees-Mogg warned about the threat of war with Russia.

Yusuf said “people are furious” at what the two senior Tories were saying.

He said: “They’re former Tory Ministers. The most nefarious people outside of those in prison. They betrayed our country and caused incalculable harm. Ignore them. Vote Reform. Then we will hold them to account.”

X users were quick to point out to Yusuf that many of those “former Tory ministers” are actually his Reform frontbench colleagues.

I’ll be honest: I always thought that solstice lasted an entire day. But the Met Office explained that it’s actually a “very specific moment which is over almost as soon as it has begun”.

“Solstice” comes from the Latin for “sun standing still” and refers to a moment in which the sun appears to stall in the sky. This year, the winter solstice will happen on December 21 at 8:50am GMT.

It’s the astronomical opposite of the equinox (the next of which is due on Wednesday, 23 September at 1:04am GMT ).

Here’s what the word means, as well as what’s actually happening in the sky when the phenomenon occurs.

Equinox comes from two Latin words: “aequus”, meaning “equal”, and “nox, which means “night”.

Given that daytime and nighttime last roughly the same amount of time in an equinox, the name’s pretty apt.

There is, however, another day when light and dark hours are exactly even. This is called an “equilux” and happens “a few days before the spring equinox and a few days after the autumn equinox,” per the Met Office.

The Earth is tilted at an angle, which is why we have seasons. If we weren’t angled, the amount of light we get throughout the year would stay stable.

This means that there will be a point in the year where the North Pole is the closest, or furthest away, it’ll be to the sun in that cycle. This is a solstice (either the longest or shortest days).

Meanwhile, an equinox happens when the sun is as close as possible to the equator. This is why night and day seem equally divided: the amount of light we recieve depends on our angle in relation to the sun, so with minimal tilt, sunshine is divided about evenly.

Without that slant, the Earth would have an equinox everyday.

If you remember from earlier, the day in which we actually get equal sunlight is called an “equilux,” not an “equinox”.

Robert Massey, deputy executive director of the Royal Astronomical Society, told the BBC this is because sunlight has to get through Earth’s atmosphere before it reaches us.

“This means when the sun’s near the horizon it appears to be slightly higher than it is because the light is refracted through the atmosphere. So, you get slightly longer than the 12 hours of sunlight,” he explained.

Sir Tom Jones has thanked his supporters for backing him after his abrupt departure from The Voice UK.

The Delilah singer was one of The Voice UK’s original coaches, and had been part of the show’s panel for every series bar one until earlier this month, when it was announced he would no longer be judging the upcoming series.

“We have loved working with Sir Tom Jones over the past nine years on The Voice UK. While he will no longer be a full-time coach on series 15, we continue to talk to Sir Tom and his team about his involvement in the next series,” an ITV rep told HuffPost UK when the news was confirmed.

Meanwhile, the man himself later claimed that it was not his decision to leave The Voice UK’s panel, accusing bosses of “firing” him “because of a financial difficulty with insurance”.

In the weeks that have followed, many fans have been voicing their disappointment in ITV’s decision, with a Change.org petition calling for The Voice UK to reinstate him having reached more than 60,000 signatures at the time of writing.

“So many heartfelt messages, comments and even petitions of support,” the 86-year-old wrote on social media on Sunday. “It doesn’t go unnoticed and it’s been really lovely to receive these! Thank you!”

This message was shared alongside a clip of Sir Tom from the most recent season of The Voice UK, in which he was heard crooning one of his signature hits, It’s Not Unusual.

In his previous statement, Sir Tom claimed: “To be clear, I did not want to leave The Voice as I love the show and really appreciate the audience. ITV made this decision – obviously a while ago, and I was told just recently.

“The reason given is because of a financial difficulty with insurance. They now say in the press they wanted to ‘refresh’ the show, and with a new coaching line-up there wouldn’t be a chair for me.”

He added: “They are offering a much-reduced role where I would make an appearance but without being actually involved from the start, and I’m not thrilled about that.

“So, the only thing I know right now, is that there’s never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who’s still pretty good at his job.”

Mis-Teeq singer Sabrina Washington’s assertion that the group are going their separate ways following their recent reunion show has not gone down well with all of her bandmates.

Earlier this month, Sabrina came together with former Mis-Teeq stars Alesha Dixon and Su-Elise Nash (not to mention OG Mis-Teeq star Zena McNally in a surprise appearance) for a one-off show at London’s Wembley Arena, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of their debut album.

Although the show was well-received by critics and fans, just one week later, Sabrina made it clear that Mis-Teeq would not be moving forward as a band when she announced a string of solo shows for 2026.

“There aren’t any further Mis-Teeq dates or new music planned and we’ve all gone back to doing our own things now,” she told The Sun. “For me, though, I wasn’t ready for the celebration to end there.”

However, after Sabrina’s interview was published, Su-Elise claimed that this wasn’t a version of events that she necessarily agreed with.

On Monday evening, she wrote on Instagram: “As far as I was aware, today was our deadline to make a decision on some incredible Mis-Teeq offers for 2027… including headlining a major UK festival, performing at another huge UK festival and potentially taking the show regional for everyone who couldn’t make Wembley.

“After the incredible response to our sold-out Wembley Arena show, I genuinely believed these were opportunities we were all excited about and hopefully saying YES to today as Mis-Teeq! So to find out that a press release went out [to the media] today saying ‘Mis-Teeq have split’ has taken me by surprise.”

“That’s news to me,” she claimed. “Either way, I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved at Wembley and so grateful to everyone who came out and supported us.”

HuffPost UK has also contacted Alesha Dixon’s team for comment.

During their time together, Mis-Teeq racked up a string of top 10 hits, including All I Want, One Night Stand, Can’t Get It Back and Scandalous.

They went their separate ways in the mid-2000s after their record label, Telstar Records, entered bankruptcy proceedings.

I won’t lie to you, I’m as susceptible to a social media trend as the next person, and I’ve done my time of trying out new products that work and don’t work.

To get from Earth to Pluto in a car (if such a thing were possible), you’d need to drive for about 6,000 years at motorway speeds.

This is just the distance between two planets in a single solar system. One light-year is about six trillion miles; the galaxy to which we belong, the Milky Way, is 100,000 light-years across.

Experts think there could be one to two billion galaxies in the universe. So, perhaps it’s no wonder that scientists have long wondered whether we can really be alone in that unfathomable expanse.

Astronomers have been listening for radio signals and other signs of life and activity for decades now.

And while it’s not linked to life on another planet, a team from the Centre for Astrophysics Harvard & Smithsonian and the University of Oregon has announced an exciting first: they’ve picked up on radio signals that come directly from an exoplanet, or a planet beyond our solar system.

It was transmitted from the not-very-catchily-named exoplanet Beta Pictoris B. That’s important because previously, we’ve only been able to attach a radio signal to an exoplanet’s star, and not the planet itself.

More specifically, the radio signal originated from the planet’s aurora – charged particles interacting with its atmosphere and magnetic field, like our Northern Lights.

Scientists think the source is an aurora because of how the signal behaves. It showed up in “rapid, recurring, and highly circularly polarised bursts”, which you’d expect from conditions like these.

Beta Pictoris B is a “young, massive” planet which orbits the relatively new Beta Pictoris star.

But, the experts write, “no physical mechanism known to cause radio emission in early-type stars can explain the observed emission”.

The paper suggests that this is “the first direct measurement of magnetic field strength for an exoplanet”. It looks like Beta Pictoris B could have a magnetic field thousands of times stronger than Earth’s, possibly strengthened by its rapid spinning (a full Beta Pictoris B day lasts about eight hours).

But this finding might also mean we’re getting better at finding exactly where faraway signals are coming from.

The researchers found signals near Beta Pictoris B using South Africa’s MeerKAT radio telescope, and later narrowed its location down to the specific planet it likely belongs to by looking at active galaxy cores called quasars.

Seven other exoplanets in five solar systems close to Beta Pictoris are now being considered for closer examination.

“A ∼5x to 7x improvement in instrument sensitivity, expected from next-generation radio observatories, will bring them within reach of detection,” the paper, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, added.

Suella Braverman has sparked an online backlash by declaring she is “not English”.

The former Tory home secretary, who was born in Harrow, raised in Wembley, went to school in Brent, studied at Cambridge University and lives in Hampshire, would only say she is “proud to be British”.

Her comments came after former prime minister Rishi Sunak, who put Braverman in his cabinet, rejected suggestions that only white people can be English.

Writing in the Sunday Times, he said: “If you are born and brought up in England and view it as home, what are you other than English?

“Attempting to deny people their Englishness or Britishness because of the colour of their skin is a recipe for alienation, for a two-tier society. How are children who hear this meant to feel?”

But Braverman, who defected to Reform UK last year and is now the party’s education spokesperson, insisted that Englishness is “an ethnicity” and therefore she does not qualify.

In a post on X, she said: “As I’ve said before, I’m not English. I’m proud to be British.

“My family and ancestors have a link to Britain which spans centuries. But in no way are we English. Yes, I was born in England, speak English and support the England football team. And indeed, I love England and the English people.

“But to say I’m English is to take a ‘laissez-faire, anything-goes’ attitude to ethnicity, citizenship and identity. It also denies me my Asian heritage.

“The liberals (many of them in today’s Conservative Party) take this cosmopolitan approach to Englishness. They’re terrified of being called racist so they say that anyone, as long as they’re born here, can be English. I take the conservative approach.

“Englishness is an ethnicity. There have been English people for centuries and we need to recognise this more if we are to start taking a more muscular approach to citizenship and nationality. And no, it’s not racist to say this.

“Other countries have no qualms in limiting who can be part of their citizenry and use ethnicity and culture as criteria. Here, the dogma of multiculturalism has been so corrosive that some people don’t actually know who we are anymore.”

A poll by the More in Common think-tank last year found that 74% of English people believe someone can be English regardless of their ethnicity or skin colour, compared to just 17% who think those factors are important.

Meanwhile, a Focaldata poll in February this year found that 83% believe someone can be considered English regardless of skin colour, with 10% saying they must be white.

Braverman’s comments also led to criticism from other social media users.
