2026 World Cup: France fall to England after wild ten-goal thriller – Sports

Published

on

France endured an emotional rollercoaster in Miami on Saturday, eventually falling 6-4 to England in a breathtaking 2026 World Cup third-place playoff. Trailing 4-0 at halftime, Les Bleus mounted a sensational comeback, fueled by Kylian Mbappé’s ninth and tenth goals of the tournament, but England held on to seal victory in a spectacular contest.

Elsewhere in sport, all eyes turn to Sunday’s World Cup final, where Spain and Argentina go head-to-head in a mouthwatering showdown. It’s the reigning European champions against the defending Copa América winners, with Lamine Yamal‘s Spain taking on Lionel Messi‘s Argentina. Remarkably, it’s the first World Cup final ever to pit the reigning European champions against the holders of the Copa America.

Could the Premier League be about to witness a record-breaking transfer? Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers is reportedly on the verge of joining Chelsea in a €137 million deal, which would make him the most expensive English player in history.

At the Tour de France, Tadej Pogacar remains untouchable. The yellow jersey claimed his fourth stage victory of the 2026 edition on Saturday with a commanding solo triumph at Marstein Fellering, finishing ahead of teammate Isaac Del Toro and French rising star Paul Seixas. At just 19, Seixas climbed to fourth overall, took over the white jersey, and became the youngest rider ever to wear a classification jersey on the Tour.

In tennis, Stefanos Tsitsipas‘ comeback continues. Down to world No. 85, the Greek will contest his first ATP final since March 2025 on Sunday, facing Belgium‘s Raphaël Collignon in Gstaad as he bids for the 13th title of his career.

Meanwhile, in Bastad, top seed Andrey Rublev will face defending champion Luciano Darderi in the ATP 250 final.

In athletics, a legendary mark has fallen. Josh Kerr shattered the long-standing world mile record on Saturday in London.

At The Open Championship, Sam Burns heads into the final round as the new leader, ahead of Ryan Fox and Kim Si-woo.

In Formula 1, teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli will start Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix from pole position.

And finally, in the World Rally Championship, Sami Pajari remains in control of Rally Estonia and is closing in on the first WRC victory of his career.

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

President Donald Trump will present the FIFA World Cup trophy to the winner of the match between Spain and Argentina on Sunday, a White House official confirmed to Fox News.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said last month on “Fox & Friends” that he and Trump would deliver the trophy to the winning team’s captain on the field of New York/New Jersey Stadium.

Infantino also said at the time that Trump would attend the contest. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called the president’s attendance “a fitting conclusion to a tournament that showcased America’s ability to host the world on the grandest stage.”

Trump was on stage during the FIFA Club World Cup trophy presentation after Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain last summer.

Earlier in the World Cup, Trump got involved in one of the World Cup’s biggest controversies, calling Infantino and requesting a review of Folarin Balogun’s red card. Balogun was suspended for Team USA’s Round of 16 match, but he was later ruled eligible for the game.

Trump has yet to attend a World Cup match, but Secretary of State Marco Rubio was spotted at the U.S. Men’s National Team’s opener against Paraguay, a 4-1 win on June 12.

The president was awarded the first FIFA Peace Prize at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., during the World Cup final draw in December.

Pro slams club, shrugs off conduct warning

Published

on

Robert MacIntyre had a hard time rolling with the breaks Royal Birkdale dealt him on Sunday. The warning he received for venting his frustration? That didn’t bother him at all.

After what was reportedly his second club-slamming outburst of the day, MacIntyre was issued a code of conduct warning following his tee shot on the par-4 16th hole during the final round of the Open Championship. Asked about it afterward, the fiery Scotsman was unfazed.

“I expect to get a few of them in my career,” MacIntyre said. “Yeah, I run hot. So be it.”

MacIntyre, who began the day at three under, seven shots off the lead, teed off at 7:05 a.m. alongside Cameron Young in relatively calm conditions. While Young took full advantage, birdieing his first three holes en route to a six-under 64 and the clubhouse lead, MacIntyre stalled as any distant hopes of a Sunday charge faded. He finished the day with a one-over 71.

As the final round wore on, the wind strengthened, Royal Birkdale grew even more exacting, and emotions boiled over elsewhere, too. Even Scottie Scheffler, the game’s best player and one of its most consistent flat-liners, barked in anger after his tee shot on the par-5 17th got a less-than-favorable bounce. MacIntyre, for his part, has never claimed to be a cool customer, and he wasn’t about to apologize for it.

“I’m going to do it for the rest of my career,” he said. “I try and toe the line, but when you feel you’re playing a golf course that you can hit it pretty much anywhere and there’s no real punishment and then you do hit one slightly off line and you get the biggest punishment you can possibly get, it’s just a sore one. Again, I’m going to react aggressively at times. Part of my DNA.”

MacIntyre also made clear he wasn’t losing sleep over the warning itself.

“To be honest, I couldn’t care less,” he said. “If I got a two-shot penalty, it’s my fault. A warning, it’s my fault. I don’t really worry about it.”

Bold Soul slated for jumps career switch in 2026 after Flemington Cup win

Published

on

Group of jockeys in colorful silks racing side by side on galloping horses.

The Patrick Payne-trained Bold Soul has proven a lucrative asset on the flat, but a move to jumps racing is now on the horizon.

Bold Soul added the Deane Lester Flemington Cup 1849 (2800m) at Flemington on Saturday to his tally of seven previous wins from 33 starts, with the victory pushing his career earnings beyond $800,000.

Under the guidance of jockey Jake Noonan, Bold Soul ($5.50) achieved a short-head victory over the $2.60 favourite Highland Blaze, with Tempesti ($16) a further half-head adrift in third. Bold Soul’s win was an upset, according to online bookmakers.

Harry Coffey, the rider of third-placed Tempesti, lodged a protest against the winner, claiming interference as they neared the finish. However, following a brief review, Racing Victoria stewards dismissed the objection.

Neal Greaves, representing trainer Patrick Payne, confirmed that Bold Soul is likely to contest jumps races next.

“I think the plan is, you might see a pretty nice jumper at Ballarat on August 16,” Greaves said. “I think the intention is he will have a jumps run this season.”

Greaves observed that Noonan has a unique rapport with Bold Soul.

The gelding had previously been ridden by Billy Egan for his last two placings at Flemington over 2540m and 2600m.

Noonan had secured the Tasmanian Derby and later the Chairman’s Stakes at Morphettville aboard Bold Soul, marking his first time on the gelding since the Lord Reims Stakes in Adelaide earlier in the year.

“It’s interesting, as some of the riders have not found him that easy to ride,” Greaves explained. “If you can’t get him to settle, and that’s the case with a lot of horses, you’re in a world of hurt, but for some reason Jake has been able to.

“We were concerned with the weight as when the weights first came out, Ciaron Maher had one (Smokin’ Romans) in it with topweight of 60 kilos. We had 55-½ kilos, so we were a bit disappointed when Ciaron didn’t accept with his, and they pushed the weights up, but it affected everyone else as well.”

With Bold Soul potentially making a transition to jumps, it’s worth checking the latest racing odds.

Published

on

Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel beat race leader Tadej Pogacar in a sprint finish to take Sunday’s 15th stage of the Tour de France, as former winner Jonas Vingegaard crashed out.

Evenepoel edged out the reigning champion at the end of the tough 11km-long climb to the finish. Mexican Isaac Del Toro was third, six seconds back.

After Vingegaard, who started the day in second, crashed out 20km from the finish, suffering what looked like a broken collarbone, Pogacar increased his lead in the overall standings to five minutes.

Evenepoel, a former winner of the Vuelta a Espana, claimed his third Tour stage victory and moved up to second overall.

Del Toro climbed from seventh to third, and also snared the best young rider’s white jersey from the shoulders of Paul Seixas.

The teenage French prodigy finished fourth, almost a minute behind the winner, with German Florian Lipowitz on his wheel.

It was a bad day for Spaniard Juan Ayuso, who lost the white jersey to Seixas on Saturday and shed another minute to the Frenchman and almost two minutes to Del Toro as he dropped to sixth overall.

Alejandro Garnacho ‘decides on joining Premier League rivals’ as Man United wait on clause

Published

on

Manchester United could be set for a further financial windfall should Alejandro Garnacho leave Chelsea this summer.

Former Manchester United forward Alejandro Garnacho has reportedly turned down a move to Aston Villa this summer as part of the deal which will see Morgan Rogers move to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have agreed a £117m deal with Unai Emery’s side to sign the England international after an impressive campaign at Villa Park.

Fabrizio Romano claims that Emery’s side enquired about Garnacho as part of those transfer talks, but the player does not want to move to Europa League champions.

Romano claims that Garnacho would prefer a move to Serie A side AS Roma, having struggled since his move from United to Chelsea.

The Argentinian winger made 43 appearances in all competitions for the Blues last season, scoring eight goals and setting up four for his teammates.

However, Garnacho struggled in the Premier League, scoring just once and found himself in and out of the side towards the end of the season.

Roma are said to be keen on a loan deal with an option-to-buy the 22-year-old, with United keeping a keen eye on proceedings with Chelsea ready to sell him if offers of around £42.5m are made.

United sold Garnacho for £40m last summer and they could be in line for a further financial windfall, having negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause as part of the deal.

Michael Carrick’s side recorded pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) from Garnacho’s move to Chelsea, due to being an academy graduate.

The same accounting benefit would apply to any sale-on income they receive down the line from the aforementioned sell-on clause.

United have already strengthened their squad ahead of a return to Champions League football following the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.

The Reds are still in the market for further signings and any financial boost will play a key part in their ability to secure their main transfer targets.

FIFA World Cup final: Keralam declares holiday for schools, colleges | Football News

Published

on

Keralam has declared July 20 a holiday for schools and colleges in the state, allowing students to stay up and watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final between Argentina and Spain, which kicks off after midnight India time.

The holiday for schools under the General Education Department was declared, considering the requests from students who are football enthusiasts. The announcement was made by the Office of the Keralam Education Minister.

Chief Minister VD Satheesan wrote on social media: “As Keralam catches the ultimate football fever ahead of the grand Argentina-Spain finale. To ensure our young fans can enjoy the midnight thriller without worrying about school or college the next morning, the Government has declared a holiday for all educational institutions tomorrow. Stay up, cheer out loud, and enjoy the game.”

The State’s Minister for General Education, N Shamshudeen also took to his social media platform and said, “Aren’t you happy now, children? …..Since the World Cup football final match is being held at midnight today, considering the request of sports-loving students, the State’s public education department has declared a holiday for schools under the department tomorrow (Monday, July 20)…”

Football fans and associations across Kerala greeted the government’s decision with much fanfare.

The World Cup final between Spain and Argentina will be played at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday at 12.30 am Indian Standard Time. The reigning European champions Spain are aiming for their first FIFA World Cup crown since 2010, while Lionel Messi’s Argentina seek back-to-back titles.

In Alappuzha, Argentinian fans gathered together to cheer for their favourite team. Dressed in jerseys, supporters were seen celebrating the World Cup spirit with enthusiasm and joy before the final.

One Argentinian supporter told ANI, “… We are eagerly waiting for this match. For our haters, this will be a proud moment. Tonight we will win the match, and Messi will lift the World Cup…”

The Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor, said, “I’m not a football expert… All I know is that Keralam has more Argentina fans than Spain fans. So know where Keralam will be. I’m safely flying out to Parliament in Delhi. I will try and avoid the drama, whatever is going to happen here, when the results come out. But by all accounts, it’s going to be a very remarkable match because these are two extraordinarily successful teams. I think, frankly, for our football fans, one of the sad things is we don’t have our own national team to identify with at these levels. I only hope that watching this world-class football will inspire more youngsters in India to become world-class footballers themselves…”

Meanwhile, the state’s Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph today assured that there would be no power disruption during the FIFA World Cup final and that all necessary arrangements had been made to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across the state.

Addressing reporters in Kannur, Joseph reassured that arrangements were in place for people to watch the match.

Responding to a query by a reporter on the final match, while regular games last for 90 minutes, there is a possibility of extended playtime due to strong teams, necessitating preparations for extra time.

Joseph said special instructions had been issued to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) to maintain an uninterrupted power supply throughout the match.

Shohei Ohtani’s next pitching start postponed amid Dodger star’s knee injury

Published

on

Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani will not return to the Dodgers’ starting rotation as scheduled. Ohtani, who had his knee drained over the All-Star break and is managing the injury while he continues to serve as their designated hitter, was supposed to start on Wednesday, but that plan has changed.

“It’s gonna be some time, and I’d say that it’s not gonna be a day-to-day thing,” manager Dave Roberts told reporters Sunday (via MLB.com).

“We just want to continue to give (the knee) the best chance to get into a good spot,” he said (via The Athletic).

Ohtani served as the Dodgers’ DH and leadoff man on Friday and is in that spot for the first game of the doubleheader on Sunday. Whatever discomfort he’s still feeling while pitching is clearly not enough to stop him from hitting.

Some things to keep in mind here:

  • Ohtani only threw 67 ⅓ innings last season in his return from Tommy John surgery. He did not have a minor-league rehab assignment, as he and the Dodgers prioritized getting him back into the lineup as quickly as possible as the full-time DH, so that was the entirety of his pitching output in 2025.
  • This season, Ohtani has already worked 85 ⅔ innings on the mound.
  • The two-time defending champion Dodgers have a 12-game lead in the NL West, which is to say that they have the luxury to slow play Ohtani’s return to the mound as they eye another deep October run and don’t want to overtax his arm.
  • Do the math. If this were any other starter, the Dodgers would use the knee injury as an opportunity to put Ohtani on the IL and preserve his workload. But he’s not, so they’re keeping him in the lineup.

Something else to watch? With Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell currently on the injured list and concerns around a few other starters, it’s always possible the Dodgers try to grab a frontline starter before the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
