“Exactly what Garnacho would do to Messi if he played for Argentina”

Fans have slammed Norway forward Alexander Sorloth for blowing away a big scoring chance during his side’s FIFA World Cup quarter-final clash with England on Saturday, July 11.

Stale Solbakken’s side saw their FIFA World Cup campaign come to an end following a 2-1 extra-time loss to the Three Lions. The Vikings drew first blood in the clash at the Miami Stadium as Andreas Schjelderup fired home from the edge of the box in the 36th minute.

However, Jude Bellingham restored parity for England in the second minute of first-half stoppage time, before scoring the winner in extra time (93′) after an error from Orjan Nyland.

Norway pushed Thomas Tuchel’s side all the way and could have gone 2-0 up in the first half if Sorloth had not thrown away a big scoring chance. In the 44th minute, the Atletico Madrid striker found himself through on goal alongside Erling Haaland in a two-versus-one counterattack situation.

However, Sorloth failed to square the ball to an unmarked Haaland, choosing to shoot instead. His effort was blocked by England defenders who had got back into position.

Following the loss to England, fans recalled the Sorloth moment and blamed the 30-year-old. One fan wrote:

“Norway really lost to England because Sorloth refused to pass to a wide open Haaland in the box, and Haaland shoved someone on a corner kick…”

“Sorloth blew this game for Norway. Congrats England,” another fan posted.

“Sorloth what a clown.. They would’ve been on their way to the Semis already, ” another fan added.

“What Sorloth did to Haaland is exactly what Garnacho would do to Messi if he played for Argentina,” a fan said, taking a jibe at Alejandro Garnacho.

“It’s Alexander Sorloth time” – Alexander Sorloth on a 2v1 with Erling Haaland open,” a fan tweeted.

“As a Norwegian Citizen I speak for all of us, Sorloth isn’t allowed back in this country,” a dissapionted fan commented.

Norway eventually scored a second goal with the score at 1-1, but Torbjorn Heggem’s strike was chalked off for a foul in the build-up after a VAR review.

Erling Haaland kept quiet as Norway’s FIFA World Cup campaign ended

Erling Haaland endured a quiet game as Norway were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup by England. The Manchester City star came into the match high in form, having scored in all his outings in the competition, including a brace in the Round of 16 against Brazil.

Against the Three Lions, the prolific forward managed just one shot on target and five touches in the opposition’s box. He was hauled off in the 106th minute as Norway fought for an equaliser.

Nevertheless, it was a memorable tournament for Haaland, who led Norway to the quarter-final run in their return to the FIFA World Cup after a 28-year absence. In five games, he registered seven goals and one assist.
