Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi delivered one of the greatest batting exhibitions in IPL history during the 2026 Eliminator, smashing records at a staggering rate while dismantling Sunrisers Hyderabad with a jaw-dropping 97 off just 29 balls. Representing Rajasthan Royals in Mullanpur, the teenage sensation unleashed complete chaos on a flat batting surface, taking apart even seasoned operators like Pat Cummins with fearless strokeplay and unbelievable power-hitting. Sooryavanshi hammered 12 sixes during his explosive innings, repeatedly sending the ball deep into the stands as SRH’s bowlers ran out of answers. Cummins himself conceded four sixes to the 15-year-old and ended with forgettable figures of 0 for 64 in four overs. The RR opener narrowly missed breaking Chris Gayle’s all-time record for the fastest IPL century after falling on 97, just one hit away from surpassing Gayle’s iconic 30-ball hundred from 2013. But even without the century, Sooryavanshi rewrote several IPL records during the innings — including one of Gayle’s most iconic milestones. The teenager surpassed Gayle’s 14-year-old record for the most sixes in a single IPL season and now sits alone at the top with 65 maximums. Most sixes in an IPL season:
65* – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (2026)
59 – Chris Gayle (2012)
52 – Andre Russell (2019)
He also now holds the record for the most powerplay runs ever scored in a single IPL season, overtaking David Warner’s long-standing mark from 2016. Most powerplay runs in an IPL season:
490 – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (2026)*
467 – David Warner (2016)
402 – Travis Head (2024)
The teenager smashed eight sixes inside the powerplay during the Eliminator, the most ever in the first six overs of an IPL innings. Most sixes in overs 1-6 in an IPL innings:
8 – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi vs SRH, 2026 Eliminator
7 – Sanath Jayasuriya vs CSK, 2008
7 – Jos Buttler vs DC, 2018
7 – Jonny Bairstow vs RCB, 2022
7 – Abhishek Sharma vs PBKS, 2026
Sooryavanshi also became the first batter in IPL history to hit 10 or more sixes three times in a single season. Hitting 10+ sixes in an IPL innings most times:
4 – Chris Gayle
4 – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi*
2 – Abhishek Sharma
2 – Finn Allen
His 11-plus sixes in the knockout clash also established a new record for the most sixes ever hit in an IPL playoff innings. Most sixes in an IPL knockout innings:
11* – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi vs SRH, 2026
10 – Shubman Gill vs MI, 2023
9 – Rajat Patidar vs GT, 2026
The innings further strengthened his remarkable IPL 2026 numbers, with Sooryavanshi now becoming the highest-scoring uncapped batter in a single IPL season. Most runs by an uncapped batter in an IPL season:
680* – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (RR, 2026)
625 – Yashasvi Jaiswal (RR, 2023)
616 – Shaun Marsh (PBKS, 2008)
He also equalled his own record for the most sixes by an Indian batter in a single IPL innings. Most sixes in an IPL innings by an Indian:
12 – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi vs SRH, 2026
12 – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi vs SRH, 2026 Eliminator
11 – Murali Vijay vs RR, 2010
At one stage, Rajasthan looked set for an even bigger total after racing to 180 for 2 in 13 overs, with Sooryavanshi turning the match into a one-man spectacle. His opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal was largely reduced to watching from the other end while the teenager launched balls across every part of the ground. Yet despite all the records and applause, the slow walk back to the pavilion after his dismissal perhaps summed up the night best. Sooryavanshi knew history was within touching distance, and even after producing one of the greatest IPL innings ever played, the 15-year-old still looked devastated at missing out on something even bigger.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi shakes hand with SRH’s Kavya Maran (Screengrab)
NEW DELHI: Rajasthan Royals’ teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi once again found himself at the centre of attention after his breathtaking knock against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2026 Eliminator. But apart from the fireworks on the field, one post-match moment involving SRH co-owner Kavya Maran also grabbed fans’ attention online. After Rajasthan Royals sealed a commanding 47-run victory at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Maran was seen greeting the 15-year-old batter and shaking hands with him near the boundary ropes. The Indian Premier League later shared the clip on social media, and it quickly went viral among cricket fans.Watch:The gesture came after Sooryavanshi delivered one of the most destructive innings in IPL playoff history. The left-handed opener smashed 97 runs off just 29 deliveries, hammering 12 sixes and five fours at a stunning strike rate above 334. His explosive innings powered Rajasthan Royals to a massive total of 243/8 in 20 overs.Sooryavanshi narrowly missed out on a century but still managed to rewrite several records during the knock. The teenager crossed Chris Gayle’s tally for the most sixes in a single IPL season and continued his remarkable rise as the breakout star of IPL 2026.While Rajasthan’s batting dominated the contest, Jofra Archer ensured Hyderabad never truly threatened during the chase. The England pacer picked up three important wickets and removed key batters early to put SRH under pressure. Nitish Kumar Reddy top-scored for Hyderabad with 38, while Ishan Kishan added 33 at the top.Sunrisers Hyderabad were eventually bowled out for 196 in 19.2 overs, ending their campaign just short of the final stages. Rajasthan Royals now move on to Qualifier 2, where they will face Gujarat Titans for a place in the IPL 2026 final.
Last month, Richardson Hitchins made the decision to vacate the IBF super-lightweight world title, leaving the door open for another contender to become champion.
Today, at the IBF’s 41st Annual Convention, in Vietnam, it was unveiled that the number one contender and Hitchins’ former mandatory challenger, Lindolfo Delgado (24-0, 16 KOs), will take on Canadian-Russian Arthur Biyarslanov (21-0, 17 KOs) in an intriguing vacant title bout between two undefeated bogeymen.
Mexico’s Delgado defeated Gabriel Gollaz Venezuela via split-decision last time in November, but was ordered for a challenge for Hitchins’ title in February.
Meanwhile, Biyarslanov, known as ‘The Wolf’, claimed the NABF super-lightweight title back in June 2024, and the 31-year-old has kept active by making five defences of the belt since, including triumphs over former world champions Mohamed Mimoune and Sergey Lipinets.
Biyarslanov sits at #5 in the IBF rankings, but it is understood that both Oscar Duarte (#3) and Keyshawn Davis (#4) turned the title opportunity down, with both men having fought and won earlier this month.
Gordon’s future at the North East club has looked in doubt for some time with Eddie Howe repeatedly fielding questions over the winger’s commitment to the club and it now looks like Gordon will be heading to La Liga next season.
Sky Sports News say that an agreement has been made between both clubs over a £70m plus bonuses move amid interest from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
Talks moved to an advanced stage on Wednesday with Barcelona’s offer hitting Newcastle’s valuation and the structure of the deal was discussed with the Spanish giants wanting to spread out the payment.
Gordon, meanwhile, is said to favour the move despite finishing the season as Newcastle’s leading goalscorer. He had previously signed a long-term deal with the club which still has four years left to run.

However, the winger played no part in any of Newcastle’s final four games of the season as speculation over a summer exit continued to grow. He has reportedly agreed personal terms with the Spanish side as well.
Newcastle’s finances are such that CEO David Hopkinson had previously revealed they would probably need to sell players to re-invest in the summer transfer window.
Gordon was called up to Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man World Cup selection earlier this month and will want to head to the tournament with his future confirmed.
He has made 152 appearances for Newcastle since joining the club from Everton in January 2023 for an initial fee of £40m.

Marine Johannes scored a game-high 21 points and her New York Liberty went on a 23-0 run to close the third quarter en route to an 84-74 win over the visiting Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday.
Johannes made a career-high seven 3-pointers, missing just twice from long range. The Liberty also got 17 points and 12 rebounds from Jonquel Jones, while Breanna Stewart contributed 11 points and six boards.
Kahleah Copper led Phoenix with 19 points, but she shot just 6 of 18 from the floor. Natasha Mack added 14 points, and Alyssa Thomas posted nine points, seven rebounds and nine assists.
New York (4-4) broke a three-game losing streak, its worst skid since 2002. Phoenix (2-6) took its fourth loss in a row.
The contest was a rematch of last year’s playoffs, when Phoenix eliminated New York by winning two of three in a first-round series.

Two players made their season debut: New York’s Leonie Fiebich and Phoenix’s Monique Akoa Makani. Fiebich, who was late to the party because she was finishing her Spanish League season, scored nine points in 33 minutes. Akoa Makani, who was finishing her season in France, put up nine points in 19 minutes.
In addition, New York’s Betnijah Laney-Hamilton returned after missing three games due to personal reasons. She scored seven points off the bench.
New York was without All-Stars Sabrina Ionescu (sore back) and Satou Sabally (illness). Sabally played for Phoenix last year.

The Liberty led 24-22 after an exciting first quarter that included 12 points and three assists from Johannes. She made 4 of 5 from 3-point range and also had a behind-the-back pass for an assist.
Phoenix took its first lead of the game, 31-29, on a Copper 3-pointer with 7:03 left in the second quarter, capping a 7-0 run. By halftime, Phoenix led, 43-42.
The second quarter featured six Liberty turnovers and none by Phoenix.
Johannes led all first-half scorers with 15 points on 5-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Copper topped Phoenix with 10 points before the break.

Jones scored 10 points in the decisive third quarter. At one point, New York forced five consecutive turnovers, and the Liberty entered the fourth with a 72-55 lead.
The Mercury never got the margin down to single digits in the final quarter.
For the game, New York shot 14-for-30 (46.7%) on 3-point attempts. Phoenix shot 10-for-30 (33.3%), and the Liberty also had a 26-9 edge in points off turnovers.
Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has blasted the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee over the non-selection of Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi for the upcoming one-off Test series against Afghanistan. Speaking on Sportstar’s Insight Edge Podcast, Manjrekar labelled Nabi’s exclusion by Agarkar and co. as “ridiculous,” saying that the system does an injustice to proven performers. His criticisms echo those of former captain Dilip Vengsarkar, who thundered that the BCCI should scrap domestic cricket if selectors are going to ignore a bowler who took 60 wickets in a single Ranji season.
Nabi won the Ranji Trophy ‘Player of the Tournament’ after single-handedly leading J&K to their maiden title.
“I used to like the golden days when tremendous injustice was done. People would come out on the streets with placards and protests. Now the outcry is mostly on social media, but this is one non-selection that I just can’t understand. It’s actually ridiculous. When Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj are not playing, whether because they are being rested or for long-term planning, then you might as well not have the Ranji Trophy if performances like these are going to be ignored,” said Manjrekar.
Manjrekar further suggested that Nabi’s exclusion doesn’t make any sense, especially when frontline pacers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami are unavailable, opening up clear slots in the bowling attack.
“It was an incredible story for Indian cricket, Jammu and Kashmir winning the Ranji Trophy, and this was the guy who almost single-handedly got them to the title. It was a no-brainer, and it’s really sad that he isn’t there. I can understand if the seam-bowling spots were taken by Jasprit Bumrah, Siraj and Shami, and Nabi couldn’t find a place. But this is beyond me. It’s not a good cricketing decision because when you compare his record with some of the others in the squad, tremendous injustice has been done,” he added.

Men’s world number one Jannik Sinner continues his bid for a first French Open title on Thursday as his women’s counterpart Aryna Sabalenka also seeks to move into the last 32 at Roland Garros.
Arriving in Paris on the back of winning all three of the clay-court Masters titles to become just the second player after Novak Djokovic to complete the set of nine 1000-level tournaments, Sinner currently stands head and shoulders above his closest competitors.
Few would bet against him now wrapping up his career Grand Slam at the French Open this year as he attempts to go one better than his epic five-set final loss in 2025 to Carlos Alcaraz — especially with the injured Spaniard out of action.
After a typically efficient first-round win in the night session on Court Philippe Chatrier on Tuesday, Sinner will aim to seal his last-32 berth when he opens Thursday’s play on centre court against Juan Manuel Cerundolo.
Sinner’s only previous meeting with the 56th-ranked Argentinian was a straight-sets win in the round of 128 at Wimbledon three years ago.
“I’m happy to play night. I’m happy to play day, whenever they put me,” Sinner said as talk of the scorching conditions in Paris continues to dominate the opening week.

“I think I handled the heat very well in Indian Wells, was very hot this year, so I didn’t have issues there. We prepared in a good way. Of course here, different heat, but the humidity is not as tough as maybe in Australia or US.”
If Sinner looms large over the men’s draw, Sabalenka has seen her dominance of the women’s tour falter somewhat this clay-court season.
After storming to the ‘Sunshine double’ at Indian Wells and Miami in March, the Belarusian has so far endured a disappointing swing on the red dirt in Europe.
A quarter-final loss to Hailey Baptiste in Madrid was swiftly followed by a third-round exit to Sorana Cirstea at the Italian Open as Sabalenka suddenly looked fallible heading into her latest tilt at winning a maiden Roland Garros title.

If the wet and cold conditions in Italy were not favourable to her style of play, Sabalenka has had no such complaints in Paris.
“I’d say that it was a bit warm,” the 28-year-old joked after her commanding straight-sets opening win against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro on Tuesday.
“Especially compared to the first days when I first got here, it was… freezing.
“Now it’s boiling hot and balls are flying, everything is much faster. But physically I feel strong, so I feel like it can benefit me.”
Scheduled third on centre court and with temperatures again set to surpass 30C, Sabalenka will be confident that her power-hitting baseline game will be too hot to handle for French world number 67 Elsa Jacquemot as she seeks to book her spot in the third round.

Defending champion Coco Gauff will take on Egyptian qualifier Mayar Sherif on Court Suzanne Lenglen as the American fourth seed also bids to progress beyond the second round.
The only time she has fallen at Roland Garros before the last-eight stage was on her debut in 2020, when, aged 16, Gauff lost in the second round to Martina Trevisan.
Four-time major winner Naomi Osaka of Japan will meet Croatian Donna Vekic on Court Simonne Mathieu, before Canadian starlet Victoria Mboko plays Czech Katerina Siniakova.
US teen sensation Iva Jovic will test her mettle against compatriot and former world number eight Emma Navarro.

Felix Auger-Aliassime will hope to avoid another “roller-coaster” match like the one he endured in the first round when the fourth seed from Canada meets Argentina’s Roman Andres Burruchaga.
American fifth seed Ben Shelton and French 17-year-old Moise Kouame will also be in action as they bookend the day’s play on Roland Garros’ second showpiece court.
Other FIA roles that currently have term limits include the president of anti-doping committee, and the head of the F1 cost-cap committee.
The current three-term limit was put in place by Ben Sulayem’s predecessor Jean Todt. The Frenchman replaced Max Mosley, who served as FIA president from 1993 until agreeing not to stand again following a dispute with F1 teams in 2009.
Asked by BBC Sport why it was decided to abolish term limits for all posts, rather than instate them for those that don’t currently have them, an FIA spokesperson was unable to provide a specific answer.
However, a spokesperson pointed to the NFL in the US, saying Roger Goodell had been commissioner since 2006 and had “transformed the sport into a global brand and it has an outstanding governance record”.

Last year, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, rejected the chance to stay on longer than 12 years – a move that would have required a change of statutes – saying “our organisation is best served with a change in leadership; new times are calling for new leaders”.
Tim Mayer, who was blocked from opposing Ben Sulayem for the FIA presidency because of the organisation’s election rules last year, told BBC Sport: “Term limits are not a bureaucratic detail.
“They are a fundamental safeguard of good governance, recognised as essential to preventing the concentration of power, ensuring renewal of leadership, and maintaining accountability to those an organisation exists to serve.”
Mayer also pointed to Bach, saying the IOC had “treated this as a core governance principle”.
CHICAGO — Nyara Sabally scored a career-high 29 points, Marina Mabrey had 24 points and seven assists, and the Toronto Tempo beat the Chicago Sky 111-104 on Wednesday night.
Toronto had its lead trimmed to 98-96 with 3:33 left in the fourth quarter before going on an 8-2 run to regain control. Mabrey sank a step-back jumper to make it 101-96 and Sabally added a three-pointer for an eight-point lead with 1:43 remaining.

Rico Verhoeven will officially receive a world ranking from the WBC following his controversial loss to Oleksandr Usyk, but a rematch will have to wait.
The WBC confirmed that interim champion Agit Kabayel remains the mandatory challenger and is expected to face Usyk later this year.
Verhoeven shocked the boxing world in Egypt after pushing Usyk to the limit in only his second professional boxing match before being stopped late in Round 11.
The ending sparked major controversy, with Verhoeven’s team appealing the stoppage and hoping for an immediate rematch.
However, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has now made it clear that Kabayel is next in line for the heavyweight title shot.
“Agit is the WBC Interim Champion and mandatory contender for Oleksandr Usyk,” Sulaiman said.

Despite missing out on the rematch for now, Verhoeven still received major praise for his performance.
Sulaiman also confirmed the Dutch kickboxing superstar will be added to the WBC heavyweight rankings after his display against Usyk.
“He deserves to fight again for the world title,” Sulaiman added.
Verhoeven came extremely close to pulling off one of boxing’s biggest upsets before Usyk found the stoppage late in the fight.
NEW YORK – Five years ago so many big-league teams were tanking that the Atlanta Braves were able to pick off six major-league players in six separate trades in July, including the guy who would be their World Series MVP (Jorge Soler).
As the Braves land in Cincinnati for their weekend series against the Reds, so few teams are tanking this season that some executives around the game say trade chatter already began this month and demand could be especially high by deadline time in two months.
“That’s a ways away,” Reds general manager Brad Meador said. “We’ve got to get there.”
Andrew Abbott pitched his third quality start of the season Wednesday, going six innings and allowing three runs (two earned). It was the sixth consecutive start in which he allowed two or fewer earned runs.
Smack in the middle of the toughest division in baseball so far, the Reds have the look of buyers as they escaped New York this week with another series win against the Mets, despite a 4-2 loss in the series finale.
Never mind that they missed a sweep against the NL East’s last-place team after stranding a whopping 17 men on base in that loss.
A winning record, the return of Eugenio Suárez to the middle of the lineup, and high expectations for October baseball that haven’t changed since spring training figures to put the Reds in the middle of any trade talks their tight, thin wallets will allow.
And the sooner the better – as quickly as bullpen pieces and lineup upgrades make themselves available in a market that might involve other contenders focusing more on starting pitching.
Meador isn’t so sure about how early the trade markets might take shape compared to any other year.
“I will say this,” he said. “We are always checking in with every team. We’ve talked to every team within the last 10 days or so. But that’s constant. It’s constant conversation with teams: ‘What are you starting to think about?’ ‘What are you looking at?’ ‘Where do you guys see yourselves?’
Advertisement
“But that doesn’t mean there’s something getting ready to happen.”
The Reds already have shown they won’t hesitate to make a move they can afford to fill a need, having made one of the few trades of the season so far when they acquired struggling starter Chris Paddack after he’d been designated for assignment by the Marlins.
Paddack has made two competitive starts for the Reds since then.
And now the health seems to be returning to the rotation with the news Rhett Lowder (shoulder) is about to start what might be a one-game minor-league rehab assignment next week and Nick Lodolo appears to be regaining form four starts into his season after opening on the injured list with a blister.
“For us there might not be anything more important than to be healthy,” Meador said. “Hunter (Greene) threw a bullpen (Tuesday). He’s coming to Cincinnati this week and he’ll throw another one.
“Lowder threw three innings (Wednesday). We’ll get him out on a rehab and hopefully get him back in a week or so,” Meador added. “The healthier we get, the better we should be.”
When it comes to the trade deadline, that might time up with the season debut for Greene, who underwent elbow surgery in March to remove bone chips.
This week’s first bullpen session appears to keep that end-of-July timeline intact.

Add that to a rotation that includes the two guys who beat the Mets this week – Lodolo and All-Star candidate Chase Burns – along with Wednesday’s starter Andrew Abbott, and it starts to look like a playoff-caliber rotation again.
(We’ll leave the bullpen discussion for another day.)
Abbott earned his fourth quality start this season with six innings of hard-contact, limit-the-damage pitching in which he allowed three runs – two of which were earned, on solo home runs by Juan Soto in the first inning and Eric Wagaman in the second.

May 27, 2026; New York City, New York, USA; New York Mets left fielder Juan Soto (22) hits a home run against the Cincinnati Reds during the first inning at Citi Field.
Even after getting tagged with the loss, Abbott completed a rebound May that included a 3-1 record and 1.29 ERA.

In beating the Reds, the Mets snapped a five-game losing streak and scored more than two runs for the first time in seven games.
The Reds have won five of their last seven, even with the loss Wednesday as they open a three-game series against the best-in-baseball Braves.
And even with a losing May that cost them the division lead they earned in April, Meador joined a chorus of Reds players in considering the team positioned well as it heads toward June.
“Look, we went through a tough stretch,” he said. “Our guys fought through it. They’re playing better now. And you just try to show up every day and focus on today.”
