Man City learn what Liverpool think of Marc Guehi transfer compared to Jeremy Jacquet

Published

on

Manchester City completed the £20m signing of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace last month despite interest from Liverpool and Arsenal.

Liverpool reportedly view incoming £60million signing Jeremy Jacquet as a more valuable long-term acquisition than Marc Guehi – after coming close to recruiting the Manchester City star last summer.

The Reds wanted to sign Guehi, 25, from Crystal Palace in September and had agreed a £35m move, only for the Eagles to pull the plug on a potential deal as they were unable to find a suitable replacement.

Indeed, Guehi, who was keen on the move to Anfield, ended up staying at Selhurst Park up until January, before City swooped in to secure his services in a deal worth around £20m.

Now, after losing out on Guehi to City, Liverpool have instead moved to sign Jacquet from Rennes. According to the Liverpool ECHO, the Reds have struck an agreement to bring the 20-year-old to Anfield for £55m plus £5m in add-ons in the summer, having held talks with the Ligue 1 side over the weekend.

Liverpool have beaten Chelsea and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich to sign the highly-rated centre-back, who landed on Merseyside on Monday and is due to complete the formalities of his move to the Reds.

Although the Reds wanted to snap-up Guehi, it appears they are not displeased to have signed Jacquet instead. According to The Athletic, Liverpool view Jacquet as being a more valuable long-term signing than Guehi in their model, hence the push to sign the Rennes man.

They are trying to build a team for the next generation, having signed eight first-team players aged 25 and under across the last 18 months; including Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz and Giovanni Leoni.

Jacquet would become the latest young player to sign for the Reds and bolster their defensive options, although they won’t have him until the summer as Rennes do not want to lose him now.

As for Guehi, he has made two appearances for City since his move from Palace. He made his debut in the 2-0 win against Wolves last weekend before playing in the 2-2 draw at Tottenham on Sunday.

Speaking after Guehi made his first appearance for City, Guardiola praised the England international. He said: “[He was] Really good. With Marc, you see, the captain of Crystal Palace has to be something special.

“Really pleased for him. I know he’s so demanding and the demand for ourselves is to be better.”
