Manchester United line-up vs Man City predicted as Rashford returns and Cunha decision made

Man United head coach Michael Carrick is hoping to go two for two against Manchester City in the derby this afternoon.

Manchester United head into today’s game in good spirits after thrashing Sabah FK 4-0 in the Champions League on Thursday night. While there was a clear gulf in quality, Michael Carrick will have been pleased with the ruthlessness of his side. That performance has led to some positive headaches ahead of the derby.

Senne Lammens’ spot in goal is secure. He wasn’t properly tested on Thursday, but a clean sheet will always be welcomed. In front of him, we expect Diogo Dalot and Harry Maguire to return to the defence.

Luke Shaw’s availability will be the biggest worry for Carrick. Patrick Dorgu was praised for his performance at left-back against Sabah, but he did look shaky at times. Against Manchester City, you need someone like Shaw who is more comfortable playing on the back foot. If he is fit enough, the 31-year-old will start.

The midfield trio picks itself. Youri Tielemans enjoyed his best performance yet for United against Sabah and he is clearly settling in alongside Kobbie Mainoo. Bruno Fernandes went through the wars in the Champions League, but it will take much more than that for him to miss out.

United’s attack is less straightforward, but Bryan Mbeumo will start. The former Brentford man has enjoyed a solid start to the campaign, and with Amad still injured, he slots in on the right wing.

Marcus Rashford was rested on Thursday night and Carrick’s comments suggest it was with this game in mind. Rashford has done well on his return and, with fresh legs, could be preferred on the left flank.

This leaves Matheus Cunha without a spot in the team. Cunha could still start up front, leaving United with a similar fluid attack as the one that drew with Everton last weekend. However, United struggled at the top of the pitch until Benjamin Sesko came on.

If he is fit enough, Carrick would surely favour the Slovenian at centre-forward, with Cunha prepped to impact the game off the bench.

Elliot Anderson explains how he started supporting Man City as a kid

Manchester City midfielder Elliot Anderson talks about starting supporting the club as a boy and how Erling Haaland is helping him

Elliot Anderson is ready to help his second team stay first in Manchester after revealing he was a boyhood Blue.

The £116million sprung a surprise after picking the Etihad over Old Trafford this summer by sharing a picture of himself as a kid in a City top. And while the Geordie stuck to his Newcastle roots, he took an interest in City after their takeover and has ‘loved supporting them’ ever since.

“Obviously, I’m a Newcastle fan deep down but you’ve always got a second team and for me, that was Manchester City,” he said. “I think I was about 7 or 8 years old, and I just started following the club and really enjoyed it. My grandad bought me a Manchester City shirt, so I’ve just loved supporting them since then.”

Anderson referred to City as the ‘kings of Manchester’ when he joined the club for £116m in summer, something coach Enzo Maresca this week said is ‘normal’ for somebody his age. Fellow signing Ayyoub Bouaddi was also pictured with a City shirt as a youngster, while Phil Foden, Erling Haaland, Nico O’Reilly and Rico Lewis were all City fans from a young age.

A derby win for City will move them eight points clear of United after just four games as they look to finish above them for the 14th straight year. Despite getting on the wrong side of his new teammate when Norway had a goal ruled out at the World Cup for Haaland knocking him to the floor, the No.9 has helped Anderson to find his feet at the Etihad.

“He’s been brilliant with me. He’s a really top guy,” said Anderson. “We have a responsibility to provide chances for him. And my first thought at the minute when I receive the ball is, where’s Erling? And I think that’s the best thought to have in your mind. Obviously, he’s a really dangerous goal scorer and if we can we can provide him with some good passes and some good chances then he’ll be really happy.”

Mark Williams pulled off a superb fightback to beat Shaun Murphy and book a spot in Sunday’s English Open final, where he will face Ali Carter.

Murphy, who had claimed a final-frame victory over Judd Trump in the quarter-finals, charged into a 5-1 lead over Williams on Saturday.

But this time it was the world number seven who was denied as Welshman Williams claimed five straight frames to snatch a 6-5 win.

Murphy looked set to clinch victory in the 10th frame with a break of 51 but handed Williams a lifeline and the world number nine took full advantage.

The 51-year-old made 65 to level things up and again prevailed in the decider, with a break of 69 completing the three-time world champion’s remarkable comeback.

Williams and Carter will now battle it out for their first English Open title at the Brentwood Centre in Essex.

In the first semi-final, Carter reeled off five frames in a row to claim a 6-2 win over China’s Ding Junhui, producing a highest break of 119.

The 47-year-old from Essex started the week 25th in the world rankings and will return to the elite top 16 if he beats Williams.

“To get in the top 16 at my ripe old age of 47 wouldn’t be too bad,” said Carter.

“There is a lot to play for tomorrow, but I’m going to be in there fighting.

“I’m still competing with the best players in the world and it is a feather in my cap.”
