As the top-ranked players on the European team, Lottie Woad and Charley Hull said they expected to play in all five Solheim Cup matches.

They couldn’t have foreseen the results.

With two days in the books at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands, Woad and Hull have been paired together in every session but have mustered only half a point. 

Three losses and one tie. That’s disappointing math for the 7th- and 8th-ranked players in the world.

“Yeah, it was pretty frustrating,” Hull said.

“Just didn’t make any putts,” Woad added.

It was late Saturday, and the two were fresh off a double dose of defeats. In morning foursomes, they’d been drubbed 6 and 5 by Alison Lee and Lauren Coughlin. In afternoon fourballs, Hull and Woad came closer, but no cigar. They fell 1 down to Yealimi Noh and Andrea Lee. 

To hear Woad and Hull tell it, their dreary record thus far does not reflect the quality their play.

“I feel like we actually played pretty solid, to be fair, haven’t we?” Hull said. 

“Yeah,” Woad said, “Yesterday in the fourball, we were like 10, 11-under and obviously it was a great match back and forth on that. And then I don’t think anyone would have beaten who we played this morning. They were 7-under through 14. So credit to them. Everyone’s played amazing when we’ve played them.”

On Saturday afternoon, Woad and Hull never led but they also never trailed by more than 2, and they forced the match to the final hole when Hull coaxed in a birdie on the par-4 17th. But on the 18th, needing a win to square the match, Hull drove it in the water and Woad left her birdie attempt short.

“I think today we didn’t hole many putts in the morning and all afternoon and that’s the difference,” Woad said. “People we played were holing 15-footers and we weren’t.”

Match-play can be like that. The results aren’t always a fair reflection of performance. But match-play can also lead to second guessing, and European captain Anna Nordqvist faced a hint of that on Saturday when she was asked what Woad and Hull needed to better in Sunday singles.

Not much, Nordqvist said.

“I think a lot of it is just for them to keep doing what they have been doing,” she said. “We’re playing the best players in the world from both teams, so it’s going to be some tough matches, going to be a lot of good golf not being rewarded. That’s just golf.”

On the bright side for the Europeans, the Swedish pairing of Maya Stark and Linn Grant have won all three of their matches. On Saturday, they were giant slayers, beating World No. 1 Nelly Korda and Allison Corpuz 3 and 2 in the morning before knocking off American stalwarts Megan Khang and Lauren Coughlin in the afternoon. The loss was Khang’s first in eight matches, and the first for Coughlin in her Solheim Cup career. 

Man United head coach Michael Carrick is hoping to go two for two against Manchester City in the derby this afternoon.

Manchester United head into today’s game in good spirits after thrashing Sabah FK 4-0 in the Champions League on Thursday night. While there was a clear gulf in quality, Michael Carrick will have been pleased with the ruthlessness of his side. That performance has led to some positive headaches ahead of the derby.

Senne Lammens’ spot in goal is secure. He wasn’t properly tested on Thursday, but a clean sheet will always be welcomed. In front of him, we expect Diogo Dalot and Harry Maguire to return to the defence.

Luke Shaw’s availability will be the biggest worry for Carrick. Patrick Dorgu was praised for his performance at left-back against Sabah, but he did look shaky at times. Against Manchester City, you need someone like Shaw who is more comfortable playing on the back foot. If he is fit enough, the 31-year-old will start.

The midfield trio picks itself. Youri Tielemans enjoyed his best performance yet for United against Sabah and he is clearly settling in alongside Kobbie Mainoo. Bruno Fernandes went through the wars in the Champions League, but it will take much more than that for him to miss out.

United’s attack is less straightforward, but Bryan Mbeumo will start. The former Brentford man has enjoyed a solid start to the campaign, and with Amad still injured, he slots in on the right wing.

Marcus Rashford was rested on Thursday night and Carrick’s comments suggest it was with this game in mind. Rashford has done well on his return and, with fresh legs, could be preferred on the left flank.

This leaves Matheus Cunha without a spot in the team. Cunha could still start up front, leaving United with a similar fluid attack as the one that drew with Everton last weekend. However, United struggled at the top of the pitch until Benjamin Sesko came on.

If he is fit enough, Carrick would surely favour the Slovenian at centre-forward, with Cunha prepped to impact the game off the bench.

Elena Rybakina has won the US Open, defeating Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 to claim her third Grand Slam title and second major of 2026.

It is the second time this year Rybakina has beaten Sabalenka in a Grand Slam final, having also defeated her in the Australian Open final.

Rybakina has now won three of the four Grand Slam titles in her career. The only major missing from her collection is Roland Garros.

Her victory also makes her only the second woman in history to defeat a world No. 1 in multiple Grand Slam finals in the same season, matching a feat achieved by Steffi Graf in 1995.

The win is Rybakina’s 49th of 2026 and her 10th victory over a Top-10 opponent this season.

After the match, the new US Open champion struggled to put the moment into words.

“It’s tough to find words right now. I didn’t expect anything like this coming to this tournament. I’ve been dealing a bit with an injury. Somehow everything aligned together on my side.”

Rybakina also praised Sabalenka after another intense battle between the two.

“Aryna you’re a great champion. It’s so difficult to play you. You push to such a limit. I was doubting on the court and trying to get to all the possible balls. Congrats to you for all the achievements. Congrats to your team. You guys are doing an amazing job. I can’t find the words now, sorry.”

For Rybakina, the victory is even more special because of her history at the tournament.

“I was coming here for the last ten years and was never successful. Nothing close to that. It’s just incredible. I’m falling in love with New York more and more. It’s amazing memories for me. Thank you guys.” ❤️

Rybakina is now a three-time Grand Slam champion and the world No. 1. The US Open title adds another remarkable chapter to her 2026 season.

A highly-anticipated showdown between David Benavidez and Jai Opetaia could now be around the corner.

The two cruiserweights have been linked to a battle against one another over the past few months, and it now could become a reality after Opetaia was victorious on Saturday.

The New Zealander claimed a ninth round stoppage win over Noel Mikaelian at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, after a dominant display which saw Opetaia win virtually every round up to that point.

Attention could now turn to a clash with three-division world champion Benavidez, after the pair were involved in a face-off in the ring and both agreeing to face each other next May.

Benavidez: “Let’s do it right here next year for Cinco De Mayo.”

Opetaia: “Done. It’s done”

Benavidez: “Respect, he’s a strong fighter but there can only be one monster. He likes war and I’m the exact same way so it will be one hell of a fight.”

Benavidez was a two-time super middleweight world champion and remains the WBC light heavyweight champion, but last time out he moved up to 200lbs and stopped Gilberto Ramirez inside six rounds to win the WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles.

Before a potential clash with Opetaia next May can take place, Benavidez is first expected to return to action before the end of the year, with a reported battle against Michal Cieslak set to come in December.

The vacant WBC cruiserweight belt could be on the line in that contest, after the governing body didn’t sanction the belt to be on the line between Opetaia and current full WBC champion Mikaelian.

After scoring 20 runs the night before, the Brewers offense showed no signs of slowing down against a beleaguered Reds pitching staff, putting up 13 runs en route to a 13-9 victory.

The scoring started early, again. Jackson Chourio led off the game with a walk and Brice Turang followed with his 19th home run of the season, setting a new career-high for himself. That put the Brewers up 2-0 very quickly. But they weren’t done in that first inning. With two outs, William Contreras drew a walk and then Garrett Mitchell clobbered his 11th home run of the season, a mammoth blast into the 2nd deck.

The Texas Rangers scored six runs while the Arizona Diamondbacks scored two runs.

Josh Jung had been the Rangers’ best and most consistent hitter throughout most of the first half of the season and right as the season’s second half was kicking into gear, Jung went down with a calf strain that was initially expected to be minor before it cost the third baseman nearly two months worth of action.

Things weren’t exactly easy for this lineup even with him on the field. Without him, however, the Rangers struggled to an even greater degree to consistently score runs. I suppose that makes sense as they were without their only non-platoon regular who was sporting an OPS north of .800 and also the squad’s leader in batting average.

Tonight, at last, Jung made his return and the Rangers had a new but familiar No. 3 hitter. Jung didn’t miss a beat as he singled in his first at-bat and later singled and drove in a run in the top of the fifth to extend a rally which would see the Rangers score all six of their runs.

In addition to Jung’s reappearance, Nathan Eovaldi also returned to action after missing more than a month. There’s perhaps not enough time left to ramp Eovaldi back up for his spot in the rotation, so the veteran arm is being used as a Swiss army knife for the ‘pen.

Tonight the 2023 Game 5 World Series winner took the Chase Field mound once again and tossed 2 2/3 innings of one-run ball to shepherd the game through until Jacob Latz collected the final four outs.

Eovaldi took on bridge building duties because tonight’s starter Kumar Rocker lasted just four innings on 65 pitches despite working with a five-run lead. After allowing the first two hitters to reach in the bottom of the fifth, Rocker was lifted for a third recent returnee Ranger with Robert Garcia coming on and working around the inherited danger to get the ball to Eovaldi.

Other than Garcia, the Rangers had these guys for the majority of the season so you can’t really say “oh what might have been…” but it’s clear that they were missed during a period where the Rangers couldn’t pull ahead in the destitute American League.

Maybe it’s not too late.

Player of the Game: Batting ninth, catcher Elias Diaz produced a team-best three hits, including the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the fifth that helped to spark the six-run frame which saw the Texas send ten batters to the plate.

Ryan Garcia makes the first defence of his WBC welterweight world title tonight when he faces Conor Benn in a major Las Vegas showdown at the T-Mobile Arena.

Garcia claimed the belt by comfortably outpointing Mario Barrios in February and now returns to the same venue looking to establish himself at the top of the 147lb division. Benn, meanwhile, challenges for a world title for the first time in his career and is back in the welterweight ranks for the first time since 2022.

The Brit has spent recent years competing at higher weights, including his two fights with Chris Eubank Jr at 160lbs, meaning his cut back down to 147lbs has been one of the biggest talking points of fight week. Both men made weight on Friday, with Benn scaling 146lbs and Garcia 145.5lbs.

Chicago White Sox amateur scouting director Mike Shirley resigned on Saturday in the wake of an internal investigation into verbal harassment allegations, according to The Athletic.

Shirley was reportedly placed on administrative leave after the White Sox received an anonymous tip about his conduct at last month’s Area Code Games in Long Beach, California. He was alleged to have made racial and sexist comments both about coworkers and in front of coworkers.

The White Sox human resources department reportedly launched an investigation into Shirley, interviewing members of his scouting department. It remains unclear what findings the investigation made.

This reportedly wasn’t the first time Shirley faced an internal investigation over his behavior. In 2022, he was investigated after a former employee left the club and flagged his behavior toward scouts from underrpresented groups. The tip was made to MLB and later passed on to the White Sox, whose investigation did not find any bias in his hiring practices or behavior.

This latest investigation reportedly included allegations of vulgar language about women and their bodies.

Shirley’s time with the White Sox goes all the way back to 2000, when he was first hired as a part-time area scout. He has since been promoted to full-time area scout, cross-checker, assistant scouting director and amateur scouting director, receiving his current role in 2019. The Athletic reports he had recently signed a contract extension before resigning.

Among the players Shirley signed during his time as a scout: Chris Getz, who became White Sox general manager in 2023.

NEW YORK — Aryna Sabalenka crushed a ball into the stands and received a warning. She yelled at herself, smacked her first racket against the ground and then completely destroyed another after the match was over.

The two-time defending US Open champion has been dethroned, losing to Elena Rybakina 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in the final on Saturday. Denied the chance to become the third women’s player to win the American Grand slam tournament three times in a row, Sabalenka beat herself up throughout the 2-hour, 21-minute ordeal that was filled with self-inflicted mistakes.

“I just wanted to let all of that aggression and disappointment go outside (on the court),” Sabalenka said. “It’s really tough to control your emotions when you lose in the final of the Grand Slam and when you were trying to go for (a) three-peat, so I just wanted to let it go.”

Sabalenka said she would not have been nice had she not expressed her frustrations. Mere minutes after the trophy ceremony, the 28-year-old from Belarus was complimentary of Rybakina but also still kicking herself for not living up to her own lofty expectations.

“I wish I could perform a little bit better, but I guess next year,” Sabalenka said. “Obviously, not really happy with the level I played (at).”

Making her fourth consecutive appearance in the US Open final, Sabalenka committed 35 unforced errors. They clearly took a toll on a player who had been atop the WTA rankings for 99 consecutive weeks.

“I was just out there competing, trying to do my best with what I had,” Sabalenka said. “Not good enough.”

Three years since losing to Coco Gauff in the 2023 final, when she was clearly not the fan favorite against an opponent from the US, this time she felt the love from the crowd, which often tried to will her back into the match.

“At some point I felt like, ‘Oh my God, I feel American,’” Sabalenka said. “I just wish I could win it and feel the support even more. Not this year.”

Sabalenka failed to win any of the Grand Slams this year, the first time she has come up empty since 2022. But after making such a deep run following some summer struggles, she hopes to take positives out of the US Open moving forward.

“I’ll just keep working hard and keep improving my tennis,” Sabalenka said. “There’s lots of things to take from this tournament. As experience shows, I only come back stronger, and all of these lessons this season definitely already made me stronger. Definitely going to motivate me for the next year to do a better job.”
