The store, named as 4th Avenue Store, in Fourth Avenue, has been closed after an eyewitness described a heavy police presence in the area of Tang Hall on Wednesday afternoon (September 23).

It is understood that the activity in Tang Hall came as part of a county-wide operation by North Yorkshire Police.

Details of the operation are yet to be confirmed. North Yorkshire Police has been approached for comment.

A closure notice posted on shutters at 4th Avenue Store says a closure notice is being sought “due to nuisance or disorder associated with this premises”.

It states that from 3.15pm on Wednesday until Tuesday, September 29, “only the owner or persons who are habitually resident at the premises may enter the premises”.

“Anyone who enters the premises now who is not the owner or habitual resident commits an offence and may be arrested,” the notice says.

The closure notice will be heard at York Magistrates’ Court on Thursday and if the order is granted, the premises will be completely sealed and there will be no access. The occupier “will need to find alternate accommodation”, the notice says.

Numerous police officers and a police van were in Fourth Avenue throughout Wednesday with onlookers watching the scene.

An eyewitness described police “descending” on the area at about 12pm.

“There are police cars all over the area – on Seventh Avenue, the alley behind Fourth Avenue,” they said. “I’ve heard there’s lots of police activity in town as well. There must be something big.”

Children from nearby Tang Hall Primary School were steered away from where police officers and vans were in Fourth Avenue.

An elderly shopper stopped in surprise when she saw all the officers but said the sight was not uncommon in recent times.

Numerous cars were parked up on the sides of the road and on grass verges with small groups of onlookers gathered.

At least one vehicle that was parked in Fourth Avenue close to the junction with Melrosegate was towed away.

The car had been the focus of attention involving numerous officers and a sniffer dog earlier today. It is not yet known what the reason was for the car to be taken away.

Love Island winner Davide Sanclimenti‘s girlfriend is facing an 18-month prison term after failing to declare millions of dollars in income on her tax returns.

Iris Rabaya Au, who calls herself ‘The Goddess’, received more than $2.6million (£1.95million) linked to illicit funds generated by her ex-partner Adam Iza – a self-styled cryptocurrency businessman who dubbed himself ‘The Godfather’.

Au, from Orange County, California, was sentenced to 18 months’ jail time on September 21 after agreeing a plea deal in March 2025, admitting one count of subscribing to a false tax return.

As well as her prison sentence, the 37-year-old mother-of-two was ordered to pay $1.4million (£1million) in restitution.

She has also been forced to forfeit assets including luxury cars, among them a Mercedes-Benz GLS, Porsche 911 and a Ferrari 488 Pista, according to court documents seen by the Daily Mail.

Au also surrendered 14 Louis Vuitton handbags, three Chanel bags and bags from Prada, Burberry, Hermes, Gucci and Dior – alongside three ‘Godfather’ sculptures.

United States District Judge Percy Anderson handed down the sentence. Au was represented by Christopher Darden, a co-prosecutor in the OJ Simpson murder trial.

The influencer, who describes herself as a ‘devoted mother, survivor, and entrepreneur’, is currently in a relationship with Italian reality star Sanclimenti, 31, who won Love Island in 2022.

Davide previously told the Daily Mail that he knew of his girlfriend’s legal troubles when they first met, saying: ‘The truth is that I knew about her situation from the start which is why I was protecting her’

The couple began dating in May 2024 and went public with their romance in January 2025 as his ex-girlfriend, Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, appeared on Love Island: All-Stars.

Sanclimenti has vowed to stand by his long-term girlfriend, publicly supporting her on a recent Instagram post.

Before meeting the reality star, Au was in a relationship with crypto fraudster Iza, 26.

Iza has been in custody since 2024 and has admitted a series of offences, including fraudulently accessing and selling access to advertising accounts on Facebook, which he used to obtain and conceal millions of dollars of income.

Prosecutors said Au created shell businesses and opened bank accounts in the names of those companies at Iza’s direction.

They said illicit funds placed into the accounts were used to pay around $1million (£750,000), mostly in cash, to serving Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies who provided private security for Iza.

Prosecutors said Iza also used deputies to obtain court-authorised search warrants and confidential information targeting people with whom he had financial and personal disputes.

The funds were allegedly used to buy or lease luxury properties, cars, jewellery and clothing and bankroll recreational spending to the tune of almost $10million.

Authorities said Au acquired around $16million (£12million) in cryptocurrency for her then-boyfriend using the shell accounts.

More than $2.6million (£1.95million) was transferred from various accounts into Au’s personal bank accounts between 2020 and 2023 that she did not declare to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the US tax service.

Prosecutors said she wilfully failed to declare the income to the IRS on her tax returns.

‘(Au) set up the financial infrastructure that enabled Adam Iza to move, spend, and conceal millions of dollars in fraud proceeds while she personally benefited from the wealth,’ they said.

‘Au concealed entities and income from her tax preparer and filed returns reporting only a small fraction of what she had actually received.

‘Those were affirmative acts designed to prevent the IRS from learning the true extent of her income.’

She said in a video: ‘Davide stayed beside me, my family stayed beside me’

Au has suggested that she was a victim of coercion in a video she shared on social media on Sunday, the day before she was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

She said in the video that she had been in ‘an abusive relationship with a former partner’ during which she ‘made mistakes, including with my taxes’.

‘I made mistakes, serious mistakes, and I take responsibility for them,’ she said.

‘Davide stayed beside me, my family stayed beside me. Whatever happens next, it’s a chapter. It’s not the end of my story.’

Davide, in a supportive comment, wrote: ‘I know how much you’ve suffered and you never deserved any of this. 

‘I’m proud of how strong you’ve been through everything, you gave me strength too… and I really believe there’s so much light and good ahead for you. You’ll come out of this even stronger.’

Au replied: ‘Thank you for staying by my side through my hardest seasons & loving me through all the healing. I love you.’

Davide had previously told the Mail that he knew of his girlfriend’s legal troubles when they first met, telling us in March: ‘The truth is that I knew about her situation from the start which is why I was protecting her.

‘Iris is an amazing person who has been through difficult situations that most people could never understand.

‘There’s so much of this extraordinary story that people don’t know yet. I will be there by her side to supply her as she deserves all the support and understanding.’

Adam Iza pleaded guilty in January 2025 to one count of conspiracy against rights, one count of wire fraud and one count of tax evasion.

He is due to appear in court on October 5, and is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence over his involvement in an attempted Bitcoin robbery and kidnapping in Connecticut in August 2024.

Au made no comment as she left the courthouse following sentencing alongside Davide and two friends, influencer Alli Stavro and personal injury lawyer Tina Odjaghian.

Ms Odjaghian posted a picture of herself, Ms Stavro and Au to her Instagram Stories following the hearing, captioning it: ‘Friends show up for friends no matter what.’

Cambridge City Council has said the reduction in affordable housing is necessary to secure funding from Homes England

A council has been accused of “playing a dangerous game” after amending plans to redevelop a council estate to secure funding. The majority of properties on Cambridge’s Ekin Road are set to be knocked down and replaced, with most now lying empty.

Cambridge Investment Partnership (CIP), a joint venture between Cambridge City Council and The Hill Group, submitted plans to build 136 homes on the site. The 91 council homes would be replaced with 78 on the estate, with a further 120 built on the nearby East Barnwell scheme on Newmarket Road.

But residents were shocked when they were told the plans had been amended after a “viability assessment” found it would not be financially viable to build 40 per cent social homes on the Ekin Road scheme. It was instead requested this be reduced to 20 affordable homes, 15 per cent of those built.

The council has reassured residents that all of the council homes will still be delivered and this reduction is necessary to secure funding from Homes England to convert the remaining 58 homes to council housing.

Colin McGerty, an Abbey resident and former city councillor, said the change will make “everyone very nervous”.

The 53-year-old said: “How confident are they? They are playing a dangerous game – what if they don’t get the funding, what’s their plan B? I know that they are people who want to do good for the city so I have a degree of faith but it would be good to make sure that we’re applying that pressure. I want to make sure the application is the right one, that’s the only reason I would object.”

He said people in Abbey are “really badly overlooked” and expressed fears the council homes could be moved somewhere else when the full plans come forward.

A similar scheme to replace the flats at Hanover Court and Princess Court was approved with no guarantee of social housing in June. But funding from Homes England was later secured for 72 council homes as part of the 165-flat development.

Cllr Gerri Bird, Cambridge City Council Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Cambridge City Council has delivered 879 new council homes since 2018, helping to increase the supply of high-quality, affordable housing across the city. Recently, we secured £96.4 million in funding from Homes England to support the delivery of 1,400 additional council homes as part of our longer-term housing programme.

“We have an excellent strategic working relationship with Homes England, and I want to reassure residents that we remain fully focused on securing the extra funding needed to deliver the 78 council homes planned for the Ekin Road development.”

If you’ve spent any time on social media recently, you’ve probably found yourself wondering whether you should be taking a magnesium supplement. There’s no shortage of influencers listing all the benefits that different types of magnesium supplements have – from boosting brain function to helping ease anxiety and improving sleep.

Indeed, magnesium is an essential mineral involved in hundreds of processes in the body. It helps muscles and nerves work properly, supports energy production and contributes to the maintenance of strong bones and teeth.

Magnesium is also important for maintaining a healthy heart rhythm, regulating blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Many people don’t get enough from their diet, so supplements can be useful in some situations.

But when you look closely at the research, there’s little evidence to suggest that any one type of magnesium supplement has unique benefits over another.

Magnesium glycinate

One of the most talked about types of magnesium is magnesium glycinate, often promoted as the best option for sleep. This form combines magnesium with glycine, an amino acid that may improve sleep on its own.

While some research does show that magnesium may improve sleep, these trials do not show that glycinate is any better than other forms. Glycinate’s main advantage is that it’s gentle on the stomach and well absorbed, which may make it easier for some people to tolerate.

Magnesium L-threonate

Another form that attracts a lot of attention is magnesium L-threonate. It’s suggested it can improve memory and focus.

These claims appear to come from early animal studies which suggested that L-threonate may increase magnesium levels in the brain more effectively than other forms. In these studies, which were conducted in rats, supplementation enhanced several types of memory and increased the number and function of connections between brain cells in the hippocampus – a key region involved in learning and memory.

Human evidence remains relatively limited. One study did demonstrate that in people who took 2g of L-threonate daily for six weeks, the supplement was associated with improvements in several areas of thinking and memory – including working memory, memory of past events, reaction speed and overall mental performance.

But as the supplement was only compared against a placebo, the results cannot tell us whether L-threonate is more effective than other magnesium supplements when it comes to brain function.

Magnesium malate

Magnesium malate combines magnesium with malic acid, a compound involved in energy production within cells. Magnesium malate is often promoted for its purported ability to support energy levels and muscle function.

Magnesium in general is important for normal muscle and nerve function. Correcting a deficiency can improve symptoms such as fatigue and muscle cramps. But there’s little evidence that magnesium malate offers advantages over other magnesium formulations – except that it’s absorbed well.

Some small studies in people with fibromyalgia (a condition which causes widespread pain, extreme tiredness and problems with sleep) have reported that malate is associated with improvements in pain and fatigue. But there’s currently no strong evidence that malate is superior to other well-absorbed forms of magnesium when it comes to improving muscle function or energy levels in the general population.

Magnesium citrate and oxide

Forms such as magnesium citrate and magnesium oxide are often used for constipation because magnesium draws water into the bowel.

Both forms may also reduce the severity and frequency of migraines and are cost-effective options. However, the oxide form is absorbed less efficiently, so people may need higher doses to achieve the same effect as citrate, which may cause an upset stomach.

Final verdict

Overall, across a range of clinical trials, magnesium has shown some benefits for sleep quality, anxiety symptoms, migraines and blood pressure. But there’s no strong evidence that one form is better than another.

Many online claims that one types is more beneficial than another usually come from small pilot studies, animal research or supplement marketing – rather than large, well-designed human trials. Direct comparisons between different magnesium salts are lacking, so more research is needed to find out whether some types of magnesium do really work better than others.

While magnesium is beneficial for our health, it’s worth asking whether supplements are even necessary. For most people, a varied and balanced diet is the best way to get magnesium. Foods with naturally high levels of magnesium include leafy greens (such as spinach and kale), nuts and seeds, wholegrains and beans. These foods provide fibre, antioxidants and other nutrients that supplements cannot offer. They also reduce the risk of taking too much magnesium, which can cause diarrhoea or stomach upset.

Those most likely to benefit from a magnesium supplement include people diagnosed with a deficiency, people with certain medical conditions (such as Crohn’s disease, which affects the body’s ability to absorb nutrients from food) and people who struggle to get enough magnesium from their diet.

For those who may benefit from a magnesium supplement, it’s worth noting that some forms of magnesium – particularly magnesium citrate and glycinate – appear to be more readily absorbed by the body than others. Magnesium citrate is also recommended for treating a deficiency.

So even if two supplements contain the same amount of magnesium, the body may absorb more from one than the other. Factors including the dose and the presence of other nutrients (such as potassium and vitamin B6) can also affect absorption.

For most people, improving diet is a more sustainable approach to boosting magnesium levels.

Chemicals used in a popular head-lice treatment used in children as young as six months could increase the risk of breast cancer, researchers say.

The warning comes after a wide-ranging study found that exposure to hundreds of chemicals in cosmetics and food packaging may begin years or even decades before the cancer develops.

Among the substances is malathion, the active ingredient in the head-lice treatment Derbac M.

Other potentially harmful chemicals highlighted in the study include bisphenol A (BPA), which is used in drinks cans and till receipts, and methylparaben, a preservative found in moisturisers, shampoos and deodorants.

Jennifer Kay, the lead author of the study, said: ‘People are exposed to hundreds of chemicals from multiple sources throughout their lives, and these exposures add up.

‘Breast cancer can take years to develop, so reducing exposure to potentially harmful chemicals early in life is an essential part of cancer prevention.’

The findings – published in Environmental Health Perspectives – come amid a rise in breast cancer among younger women, with cases among 20 to 49-year-olds increasing by almost 10 per cent over the past decade.

To identify the biggest sources of exposure, researchers analysed more than a dozen US government databases covering chemical use, pollution levels and human exposure.

They focused on more than 900 chemicals previously identified as potentially linked to breast cancer, including substances that can disrupt hormones or have been shown to cause mammary tumours in animals.

The researchers found hundreds are still used in everyday products, including building materials and medical equipment.

Among them was benzene, which people are commonly exposed to through exhaust fumes and cigarette smoke, and styrene, used in some takeaway coffee cups and food containers.

They also highlighted BPA, a chemical used in some reusable plastic food containers, the lining of drinks cans and till receipts. It was banned from baby bottles in Britain in 2011 amid concerns it could leach into their contents.

The European Commission went further in December 2024, banning BPA from materials that come into contact with food. The UK has yet to follow suit.

Researchers also highlighted DEHP, a chemical used to soften plastics that can still be found in some medical equipment, as well as methylparaben, a preservative used to extend the shelf life of moisturisers, shampoos and deodorants.

Parabens can mimic the effects of oestrogen in the body – significant because the hormone can fuel the growth of some breast cancers.

However, several of the pesticides highlighted in the study are no longer approved for agricultural use in Britain.

Scientists said the findings expose a potential regulatory ‘blind spot’, because safety assessments often consider individual chemicals rather than the mixture of substances people may be exposed to in everyday life.

‘Breast cancer can take years to develop, so tracking and reducing people’s exposure to pesticides from multiple sources is an essential part of cancer prevention,’ said Dr Kay.

Around 59,000 women and 420 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK each year.

There is no single cause of the disease, and the study does not prove that exposure to any one of the chemicals identified will lead to breast cancer.

However, a number of factors are already known to increase the risk, including getting older and having a family history of the disease.

Drinking alcohol, smoking, being overweight, having dense breasts and exposure to certain hormones, including through HRT, are also linked to breast cancer. 

Poison sellers will continue to take the lives of young people in the UK, the dad of a British victim has warned.

David Parfett’s son Tom was 22 when he died in a hotel in Surrey in October 2021 after buying a poison tablet online from Canadian Kenneth Law.

Law is due to be sentenced after he admitted 14 counts of aiding suicides in Canada after meeting people in online suicide forums, in a case also linked to 79 deaths in the UK.

He won’t face charges over any British deaths, but they will be considered in sentencing hearings, which began today, and the families of British victims will have their impact statements read in court.

David, who played a crucial role in bringing Law to justice, told Metro: ‘Without Law, Tom would still be here and would have got through the problems he was facing.

‘Tom was bright, entertaining to be around and had a wicked sense of humour. It is incredibly sad to lose somebody like that to the world.

‘But we still have people who promote suicide methods online and there are still active UK users on these forums.

Tom, an ‘academically brilliant’ A-star student who had struggled with his mental health throughout his childhood, had just moved to St Andrews to study philosophy at university.

Battling isolation during the Covid pandemic and dealing with the anxiety to succeed academically, Tom began to suffer with suicidal thoughts.

Just by searching online, Tom was able to come across a pro-suicide forum that promoted a deadly substance that he used to take his life.

He bought the poison from Kenneth Law’s website for around £50.

After taking the tablet, commentators on the platform egged him on as he died.

David said: ‘I still can’t believe that Tom was able to go onto the internet and just put in a fairly standard search, and from that he was able to understand exactly what he needed to do to kill himself.’

It was only after David looked into his son’s death – and successfully ordered the poison himself – did he eventually discover that Kenneth Law was his son’s killer.

Authorities said Law, a former chef, sold about 1,200 packages of toxic substances to recipients he met in online suicide forums in 40 countries, with roughly a quarter sent to the UK.

The first impact statements are due to be heard in court today as the judge weighs Law’s prison sentence.

Each count of aiding suicide carries a maximum sentence of 14 years, with experts predicting prosecutors could seek a 20-25 year sentence.

David’s main fear is that Law could reoffend when he leaves jail.

He said: ‘The man is callous. I fear what happens when he gets out.

‘There is very little that prevent him from doing something similar again and it would still be difficult to detect.’

Tom’s dad believes it was the ‘wrong decision’ for prosecutors to drop murder charges against Law, which would have carried a longer sentence.

‘Just because Law was not present when my son died, that does not mean he did not murder him,’ David continued.

While many impact statements will rightly be ’emotional and pretty aggressive towards Law,’ David said his is ‘pretty factual’.

His main concern is making sure that what happened to Tom and dozens others cannot happen again.

In August, Metro revealed that the suicide forum linked to Tom’s death was still easily accessible within seconds via a VPN in the UK, despite Ofcom saying it is blocked to UK users.

David says he still has an account on the site and that young people are still dying.

He warned: ‘I am a member of a group with the relatives of lost love ones and it has grown this year. There has been at least three new members since Ofcom began investigating the site.

‘There are other sellers like Kenneth Law who still continue to sell this stuff.’

Justice, for David, is not about Kenneth’s sentence but about ‘making sure there are no other deaths of vulnerable people like Tom’.

Earlier this month the bereaved families of young people whose deaths were linked to the suicide forum called on Andy Burnham to support their call for a public inquiry.

The site’s operator was fined £950,000 in May by online safety regulator Ofcom for failing to comply with duties under the Online Safety Act.

By July, Ofcom confirmed it could not pursue further legal action, adding that changes made by the US-based forum to block access to those in the UK represented “the fullest extent of what can be achieved” under the Act.

McDonald’s announced on Wednesday a plan to invest $8.5 billion across the next ten years to revamp its restaurant fleet worldwide.

In an effort to cater to health-conscious diners, the Chicago-based fast-food giant intends to roll out grilled chicken wraps and sandwiches, alongside trials for new menu items such as egg bowls and bites.

According to Sky Anderson, the president of McDonald’s USA, roughly 30 million people in the US are currently taking GLP-1 weight loss medications, driving demand for smaller portions with higher protein content. Furthermore, internal data shows that 60 million American consumers are consciously trying to add more protein to their meals.

“This is an opportunity. We need to keep giving them more reasons to make McDonald’s their first choice,” Anderson stated during the company’s investor day event.

As part of the overhaul, locations will feature dedicated pickup lockers for delivery drivers, open coffee stations to highlight beverage quality, enlarged play spaces, and redesigned kitchens. Additionally, order-checking scales currently installed in 10,000 locations worldwide will expand to 20,000 sites by 2028.

The fast-food chain is also speeding up the rollout of ArchIQ, an artificial intelligence platform created alongside Google to boost order precision and streamline operations such as scheduling and inventory control.

While franchise owners generally allocate up to $450,000 every ten years for mandatory renovations, the revised strategy will require an extra $800,000 per store, though McDonald’s noted it plans to cover part of these expenses.
