This list is not about Viggo Mortensen’s most famous roles alone, even though the top is dominated by the fantasy trilogy that turned him into a permanent part of modern movie history. It is about the films where Mortensen’s presence becomes inseparable from the movie’s full power.

Mortensen has never built his career around obvious movie-star vanity. His best performances feel lived-in before the story even starts. He carries history in posture, silence, appetite, exhaustion, violence, humor, and the way a character looks at another person before deciding what kind of truth to give them. ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’ (2001)

He is dirty, watchful, guarded, and physically capable without seeming eager to prove it. That first impression matters enormously. The film already has hobbits, wizards, elves, ancient evil, mythic objects, and a world loaded with history. Aragorn gives that world a human kind of danger and an anchor. He looks like someone who knows exactly how badly courage can end.

Mortensen’s brilliance in the first film is restraint. He makes Aragorn’s nobility feel unwanted, almost burdensome. His protection of Frodo (Elijah Wood), his fear of Isildur’s (Harry Sinclair) weakness, his tenderness with Arwen (Liv Tyler), and his loyalty to Boromir (Sean Bean) all come from a man fighting against inheritance as much as Sauron. The death of Boromir works so strongly because Aragorn’s grief has no decoration. He gives Boromir comfort, accepts the broken sword of brotherhood between them, and then has to keep moving. That is the Aragorn foundation: reluctant king, exhausted soldier, decent man. Mortensen makes all three visible at once.

‘Eastern Promises’ (2007)

Nikolai Luzhin (Viggo Mortensen) is one of Mortensen’s most terrifying characters because he never begs the audience to admire his control. He simply has it. In Eastern Promises, Nikolai moves through London’s Russian criminal underworld as a driver, fixer, enforcer, and silent observer inside the orbit of Semyon (Armin Mueller-Stahl) and Kirill (Vincent Cassel). Every gesture feels measured. Every word feels rationed. Even his politeness has threat inside it.

The bathhouse fight is the scene everyone remembers, and rightly so, because Mortensen strips the character of clothing, weapons, and social disguise while somehow making him more frightening. Yet the performance is larger than that one brutal fight. Nikolai’s tattooed body tells a story he refuses to speak aloud. His relationship with Anna (Naomi Watts) introduces moral risk without turning him soft. His handling of Kirill mixes manipulation, contempt, and strange protection. Mortensen makes Nikolai unreadable in a way that feels earned, then lets small flashes of conscience cut through with devastating precision. It’s like David Cronenberg gives him a criminal world built on ritual and rot and Mortensen gives that world its most dangerous secret.

‘Captain Fantastic’ (2016)

A brilliant, stubborn father raising his children off the grid, training them in survival, literature, politics, music, combat, and radical self-sufficiency is a role that could easily tip into fantasy-parent worship or smug anti-society sermonizing. Mortensen saves Captain Fantastic from that trap by playing Ben as deeply loving and deeply wrong in ways he cannot fully see. Ben Cash (Viggo Mortensen) could have been unbearable in the wrong hands. That’s not the case here.

The movie hurts because Ben’s devotion is real. He does not neglect his children through laziness. He has built an entire life around preparing them to think, question, endure, and resist. Mortensen makes that devotion magnetic, then slowly lets the damage show. The children are extraordinary, but they are also isolated. They can quote philosophy and hunt for food, yet some of them barely understand ordinary social life. The funeral fight over their mother Leslie exposes the limits of Ben’s certainty. He wants to honor her wishes, protect her memory, and defend his family’s way of life, but love has started turning into control. The masterpiece is in watching a father discover that being right is not the same as being good enough.

‘A History of Violence’ (2005)

Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) is terrifying in A History of Violence. You can realise this before even understanding why. At first, he appears to be a gentle small-town husband and diner owner, a man with a quiet marriage to Edie (Maria Bello), two children, and a life built around ordinary decency. Then violence enters the diner, and Tom kills with a speed and precision that instantly changes the entire movie. The shock is not only that he can do it. The shock is how naturally his body remembers.

Mortensen’s performance is a masterclass in divided identity without theatrical tricks. Tom begins to lose control over the person he has been pretending to be, or maybe the person he has worked brutally hard to become. When Carl Fogarty () starts calling him Joey, the film turns every denial into a test. Mortensen makes Tom’s fear, anger, shame, and buried reflexes fight inside the same stare. The staircase sex with Edie, the confrontation with Richie (William Hurt), and the silent family dinner near the end all expose different wounds.

Mortensen’s work here is less romantic than in The Fellowship of the Ring and less triumphant than in The Return of the King. That middle position gives the performance its force. Rebecca Ferguson is quietly having one of the biggest years of her career in 2026, but it didn’t start with a hit. Earlier this year in January, Ferguson teamed up with Chris Pratt for the sci-fi thriller, Mercy, which bombed at the box office before going on to find success on Prime Video. She also starred in one of the first perfect movies of the year, The Magic Faraway Tree, which is finally coming to theaters in America this August after a limited release overseas. Before she returns as Lady Jessica in Dune: Part Three later this year, Ferguson can be seen reprising her role as Juliette Nichols in the third season of Silo on Apple TV. She will also return in Season 4, which will be released next summer at a currently unspecified date.

Ferguson has starred in plenty of polarizing projects over the years, but few generated the same response as Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining (1980), which was released in 2019. Ferguson stars alongside Star Wars veteran Ewan McGregor in the Stephen King fantasy sequel, which underwhelmed at the box office, grossing only $72 million globally against a $45 million budget and falling short of its break-even point. Written and directed by Mike Flanagan, who has become one of the most frequent Stephen King collaborators in recent years, Doctor Sleep is not currently streaming anywhere in America. However, the film has surged back into the top 10 on VOD platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV as Silo and Dune fans continue to check out some of Ferguson’s older work. What Is ‘Doctor Sleep’ About?

If you were to read only about the drama that has unfolded behind the scenes of the Yellowstone franchise’s latest installment, you’d believe that it was a complete trainwreck. However, despite the challenges, the show has emerged as a critical and commercial success. The series’ troubles began even before it premiered this May, when it was revealed that showrunner Chad Feehan had been fired after having disagreements with key creatives. More recently, the legendary Ed Harris said that he wanted to quit the show because he was misled about the length of his role; he was assured that he’d have more to do in future seasons. Around the same time, lead actor Cole Hauser admitted that the creative architect of the Yellowstone franchise, Taylor Sheridan, wasn’t involved in day-to-day operations on set, leaving other veterans of the series in a challenging position.

However, Hauser said that he was proud of what the new team achieved. His confidence wasn’t unfounded; the show in question, Dutton Ranch, debuted to excellent reviews and is now sitting at a “Certified Fresh” 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website’s consensus reads, “Dutton Ranch takes what its predecessor perfected and carries the mantle well in a new town with the same well-worn trappings, perfectly dusted and ripe for entertaining.” This was exactly the kind of rebound that the Yellowstone franchise needed after the lukewarm critical reception of its previous installment, the CBS series Marshals.

This week, Nielsen reported streaming viewership for June 29 to July 5, which is when Dutton Ranch concluded its first season. According to the tracking firm, the series accumulated 827 million minutes watched during its finale week — this was only slightly lower than its season-high of 840 million minutes watched a few weeks prior. In total, Dutton Ranch amassed more than 6 billion minutes watched over the course of its eight-week run, emerging as one of the biggest hits on streaming. The show also featured a returning Kelly Reilly, alongside Annette Bening, Jai Courtney, and Natalie Alyn Lind. The Yellowstone franchise is expected to continue with more offshoots, even though Sheridan’s deal with Paramount has now come to an end.

Dancing With the Stars pros Alan Bersten and Emma Slater shared a sweet moment while onstage at the reality TV competition’s highly-anticipated fan convention.

In a video shared by People, Emma, 37, was seen running up to Alan, 32, before the couple embraced and shared a smooch during the Saturday, August 1, show at DWTS Con.

The clip showed Emma placing her arms around Alan’s neck before pressing her palm to his cheek as the pair walked off. Earlier in the night, Alan and Emma performed a duet to Donna Summer’s “Last Dance.”

More than one year earlier, the couple confirmed their relationship while kissing onstage during an April 2025 live show.

“Last year on the last show of [the Dancing With the Stars Live] tour, I was like, ‘I’m gonna kiss her. I’m gonna do it on stage,’” Alan recalled to Us in February, explaining that he asked Emma for permission ahead of time. “I asked her beforehand, because I was pretty scared.”

Emma recalled being surprised by Alan’s idea. “I said, ‘Really?!’” she told Us. “And he says, ‘Yeah, I’m just gonna kiss you.’”

While Emma gave her stamp of approval for the gesture, she “didn’t know” Alan would go forth with the moment.

“He did it, and then we messed up the dance,” she recalled. “Afterwards, the audience was screaming, and it was really loud.”

Since going public with their relationship, Alan and Emma have opened up about their dynamic — and what they love most about each other.

“I think what I love most about Alan is we are very different and I need someone who is — this is going to sound very unromantic — but he is so practical and logical thinking. And he is so matter of fact,” Emma said on a December 2025 “House of Maher” podcast episode. “I love his humor, I love to laugh. It’s a really big thing, to me, to laugh in my relationship. But I love the fact that he really does show affection to me and he takes care of me and I love his heart.”

Alan, for his part, gushed that Emma “cares so much about everyone.”

“She’s going to try to help them out,” Alan said. “She helps me out so much. So on top of just how beautiful our lives are and how romantic we can be and all that, she really wants me to be a better person. And I think that’s important.”

Alan noted that Emma “loves to learn,” which resonates with him. “I’m somebody that’s so attracted to passion and growth and wanting to be better. I’m really attracted to drive and Emma does that all the time,” he said. “Like, she just constantly is reading or researching something. She got her real estate license for fun. She got her notary license for fun. She just likes to learn things. It’s so attractive to see somebody progressing and getting better and learning.”

When Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight was seemingly snubbed at the Oscars, especially in the Best Picture and Best Director categories, the Academy made sweeping changes to its nominations process. The very next year, James Cameron’s Avatar benefited from this rule change, scoring a Best Picture nod as the representative for blockbuster cinema. It faced off in a memorable David-versus-Goliath showdown against Kathryn Bigelow’s small-budget dramatic war thriller The Hurt Locker. But there was another mainstream genre hit that scored a Best Picture nomination in the same year, and now it’s on its way to a free streaming platform amid rumblings of a sequel.

The movie in question was released in 2009 and produced by Peter Jackson. The Oscar-winning director behind The Lord of the Rings trilogy was a fan of the South African short film upon which the feature was based. Lioness Stars Hint Scheduling Issues Caused Season 3 Change

Season 3 of Taylor Sheridan‘s Lioness looks different after “scheduling issues” led to some changes — including a surprising story line.

During the premiere on Sunday, August 2, the show pivoted away from introducing a new Lioness into the fold. Instead, the team has a new mission when Joe (Zoe Saldaña) is abducted. The twist? She was nearly taken six months prior, which introduces a dual timeline that will play out the rest of the season.

“I will say I had to ask them for a chart of the time because sometimes I thought I would be in one place and then the clothes wouldn’t match where I thought that we were,” Laysla De Oliveira exclusively told Us about how the Paramount+ series will jump back and forth.

De Oliveira, 34, who plays Cruz, sometimes struggled with differentiating where each scene was, adding, “I want to shout out the wardrobe team because that’s very hard to do when you’re shooting out of order and so that also helped me connect with the timeline that we were in.”

Jill Wagner, meanwhile, explained what inspired the shakeup.

“I know that behind the scenes we were dealing with some scheduling issues with some of the characters,” she told Us. “So I was even talking to Taylor and I was like, ‘How are you going to get around this?’ And he’s so brilliant. That’s when he came up with, ‘Oh, we’re just going to move. We’re going to play with time.’”

Created by Sheridan, 56, the hit Paramount+ series is a spy thriller that follows the leader of a CIA team that enlists female operatives — known as Lionesses — to go undercover in the war on terror.

The first two seasons followed Joe (Saldaña) as she recruited Cruz (De Oliveira) and Josie (Genesis Rodriguez) to go undercover. A season 2 mission put the team at risk that nearly ended in a group sacrifice.

Season 3 will raise the stakes as viewers jump back and forth from the past to the present.

“It was just a lot more work. When you don’t have something that falls in a natural progression chronologically, you’re challenged more as an actor to know exactly where you are,” Michael Kelly, who plays CIA Deputy Director of Operations Byron Westfield on the series, told Us. “You have to know that this has happened already and now we’re flashing back and flashing forward. It’s difficult and you’ve really got to.”

He continued: “I’m very proud to say that it was pretty smooth because this whole cast brings 110 percent at all times. It’s the way it was and it’s the way it stayed. It’s pretty rare in the third season of a show for your whole cast to be on the same page of we’re going to make this f**king awesome. Everyone wants it to be as good as it can be and work so hard. It’s great because you’re proud of what you’re doing.”

Viewers will also get to spend more time with the ensemble cast while awaiting updates on Joe’s whereabouts. Wagner, 47, and De Oliveira weighed in on how their characters will be utilized while praising Sheridan for his hard work.

“Taylor writes these characters — whether they’re male or female. He just writes strong characters,” Wagner told Us. “So if you are lucky enough to get to say his words — whether you’re a woman or a man — is irrelevant to me.”

Wagner was thrilled at the chance to bring a character written by Sheridan to life, saying, “I think he’s so good at at writing these interesting and complex characters. It’s a gift to get to say his words.”

De Oliveira couldn’t help but agree.

“Cruz has just expanded me artistically and in my personal life too. I really knew her heart but she’s completely different from me,” the actress not. “So I had to learn how to go to the gym. I had to learn how to yeah hold a gun. Like it was so many new things all at once that it was just a beautiful present for me.”

Filming Lioness changed De Oliveira for the better.

“She’s really taught me how to look at things differently and let me give more things a try,” she continued. “I can be scared to try something because I haven’t done it before but Taylor didn’t give me an option. That has also translated to my everyday choices.”

Lioness airs new episodes Sundays on Paramount+.

This woefully underrated Netflix drama is one of the most overlooked sci-fi gems to make it onto the streaming platform. The post-apocalyptic show Sweet Tooth is set in a world reshaped by a plague and hybrid children, centering around the young deer hybrid Gus (Christian Convery) as he leaves his protected home in search of answers and safety.

Sweet Tooth is honestly one of the best and most ambitious series on the Netflix platform. In the City star Danielle Olivera is sharing an update on her preemie son Aidan amid his continued neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stay.

“As of today he’s 6lbs, 15 oz and 20.5 inches long,” Danielle, 37, wrote over a series of photos of her son in the NICU on Saturday, August 1, sharing that her son is 42 days old or, if she was still pregnant, would be 34 weeks and 5 days gestational age. “Fully on room air so no more CPAP bubble. He gets WAY more cuddles now.”

She continued, “Started oral feeds to gradually wean him off the feeding tube. Traded his preemie diapers in for newborn size. Loves his amazing nurses who make him feel special and take such good care of him. Currently Daddy’s twin.”

Danielle shared the first photo of her son, Aidan Santos Heavy, back on July 18, confirming that he had arrived early at just 28 weeks and 5 days gestation, requiring a significant NICU stay.

“Already making his own rules,” she wrote via Instagram at the time, sharing a photo of her son resting in a NICU isolette. “Tiny, mighty and clearly not interested in our timeline.”

Danielle’s boyfriend, Eoin Heavy, had previously revealed that their son had arrived 10 weeks early, joking that baby boy Aidan would be “heading to summer camp at NICU” for approximately three months.

When sharing the first photo of her son, Danielle also gave fans a quick update on his condition.

“He’s thriving at @stonybrookmedicine NICU and getting stronger every day while keeping Mom and Dad on our toes,” she wrote at the time. “To the incredible NICU team at Stony Brook, our family and friends, and every NICU mom who’s reached out with love, advice and hope — thank you. You’ve carried us through more than you’ll ever know.”

In her latest update, Danielle once again thanked her fans and followers for their support – while also sharing that the NICU has made it possible for the proud mom and dad to check in on their little one from afar.

“So thankful we’re able to see him when we’re not there,” she wrote over what appeared to be a screenshot of a live feed that allows Danielle to see her son as he’s swaddled and laying down in an isolette.

“Thank you all for your support,” she added. “Keep you posted on when we’re able to take him home! So proud of our smiley little legend.”

Sheriff Chris Nanos Reacts to Latest Ransom Letters in Ongoing Nancy Guthrie Case

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is sending a message to Nancy Guthrie’s family, including Today’s Savannah Guthrie, six months after her abduction.

“We’re still here. We’re not going away. If you could just see the team working, you’d see the energy, the concern. They’re fired up and we will continue to work this case hard,” Nanos said in a video shared on Saturday, August 1, per the official Pima County Sheriff’s Department social media account, when asked if he had a message for the matriarch’s family.

Nancy was taken from her home in Arizona six months ago, igniting an investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI. In the clip posted on Saturday, Nanos reiterated that the investigation into Nancy’s disappearance is “very active” despite authorities having zero leads or suspects.

“We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us,” he said. “We’ve done a lot of work but we still have more. Not just in DNA — labs across the country are working together — but in forensics, analysis of thousands and thousands of videos, photos. And we also have still tens of thousands of tips that come in and we [are] actively working on. It’s a very active investigation.”

Nanos also went on to explain the two reasons why the sheriff’s department chose to release alleged ransom notes six months before Nancy was taken.

“One, it’s out there. [The] media has covered some of this. We just saw what was being said and we felt like we need[ed] to put something out that’s really accurate. This was the time. Investigators felt like there [were] a number of pieces of information in these notes that it just might jar someone to say, ‘I’ve heard that.’ Or, the wording, the style of the writing, might jog somebody to kind of think about, ‘Who would have written this? How was this done?’” he said.

“I think anybody who reads them — my investigators, we look at it — and clearly there’s things in there that are very concerning to our investigative team. We hope that by releasing the actual note, we will get some response from the community,” Nanos explained, adding that the Guthrie family “absolutely” knew about their plan to release the message.

Since Nancy’s disappearance, authorities have released Nest doorbell footage of a masked figure approaching her home. No suspects have been named. Authorities and the Guthrie family are offering significant monetary rewards to anyone who can give them any credible leads.

“A number of issues have been brought up about people being cleared of this investigation,” Nanos said. “We served a few search warrants. We talked to individuals and we move on because if the evidence is there, we continue that path. But that doesn’t mean those individuals are cleared. It just means that we met with them because we felt like there was a need. There was probable cause, established through evidence, tips, whatever, and presented to the court and we went on.”

He continued, “Does that mean those individuals are cleared? Not necessarily. It just means that we took a look at something that was concerning to us and now the evidence takes us elsewhere. But more to that point, I can’t be more clear. I said this earlier on and I say it again. The Guthrie family has not and have not been suspects in this investigation. We talked with them, worked with them. They are not suspects. They are victims. Victims of a very horrific crime.”

Savannah, for her part, issued a public plea to bring Nancy home as the case hit the six month mark.

“We are begging for help. We are desperate. We need someone to come forward. Someone knows something. Someone suspects something. Someone recognizes the writing in the ransom demand notes. Someone has noticed something different, strange, troubling or just unusual — perhaps with someone they deeply love. Perhaps they are afraid to come forward. Perhaps they are conflicted. Perhaps they are angry or upset for being in this situation,” Savannah wrote, in part, via Instagram on Saturday. “There is a way out — to tell what you know. You can do so anonymously. The reward is available. There is a way to end this situation and do the right thing.”

Savannah went on to note that her family is “real people, facing real grief, doing the best we can, and counting our many blessings along the way — most especially the prayers and love from good people, which we feel deeply.”

“We need your prayers, we need your kindness. We need the good to be stronger than the evil. If you are following this story for entertainment or for profit, you are not on her side – you are part of the harm perpetrated against her,” she wrote. “We will never stop looking for answers – and we will never stop looking for the light. We will always be hoping and praying and believing in the best of our world – in spite of circumstance. This is what our faith makes possible.”

She concluded, “Please. Bring her home. 💛.”

Twin Falls Officials Investigate Deadly Restaurant Attack

According to authorities, the shooting happened Saturday afternoon before 2:30 p.m. local time at the Twin Falls In-N-Out location. Police said three people were killed and at least seven others were wounded as officers responded to the scene and began working to piece together what happened. Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said investigators are working to determine the shooter’s identity and possible motive. The suspected gunman died shortly after the shooting, though officials have not released additional details about how the person died.

In-N-Out President Lynsi Snyder confirmed that a female employee was among those killed, saying she was caring for customers at the time of the attack. Snyder also shared that the shooting took place both on and off the restaurant’s property, adding that the company’s focus remains on supporting those impacted.

Investigation Expands As More Details Emerge

Witnesses described a frightening moment as people ran from the shopping center after hearing gunshots. One local woman told the Associated Press that she initially thought something else had happened before realizing a shooter was involved after seeing employees and customers fleeing the area.
