Bellingham could be bigger than Beckham: England star’s brand on track to become one of most valuable in world sport as he cashes in on multi-million pound sponsorship deals after World Cup

Published

Jude Bellingham has been player of the World Cup for many - and experts believe he may follow Sir David Beckham (pictured this week in Miami) into the billionaire league

Jude Bellingham‘s blockbuster World Cup has put him on course to eclipse Sir David Beckham as English football’s next billionaire.

The superstar, 23, who has been the tournament’s standout performer, is building a commercial empire to match his exploits on the pitch.

He is already believed to earn more than £40million-a-year from his Real Madrid salary and endorsement deals.

Already the face of Adidas, Louis Vuitton, EA Sports FC, Lucozade and Kim Kardashian‘s Skims, ‘Brand Bellingham’ is now becoming one of the most valuable in world sport.

Mark Borkowski, one of Britain’s best-known PR gurus, said: ‘Jude Bellingham could become a greater athlete than David Beckham. Whether he becomes a bigger brand is a much higher bar.

‘Beckham’s brand was built on extraordinary forces converging at exactly the right time. No footballer had ever occupied quite that intersection of sport, fashion, music and celebrity.’

More lucrative agreements are expected to follow after his World Cup heroics, which have included six goals and a string of match-winning performances.

Industry experts believe the United States could become his most lucrative market, because Americans love his self-confidence.

Mr Borkowski believes Bellingham has demonstrated his value both on and off the pitch.

He pointed to a video that emerged after England’s victory over DR Congo in which Bellingham stopped to speak to disabled Venezuelan journalist Manu Gutiérrez while most teammates walked past.

Bellingham leaned down to speak to him in Spanish after being moved by the plight of Venezuela following a devastating earthquake that killed almost 5,000 people.

Mr Borkowski said the footballer had shown himself to be a ‘decent human being’ and the authentic role model brands are desperate to be associated with.

‘That comes from somebody being incredibly human and decent,’ he said of his behaviour.

‘There are plenty of examples of people ignoring mascots, ignoring journalists, ignoring fans. Messi has this bodyguard that surrounds him and stops them. But Bellingham is very open. And that’s what he and his team will be thinking about – it’s not just what you do on the field,’ he told The Times.

US football finance expert Roger Bennett has said Americans have embraced Bellingham – and his confidence.

He told the Financial Times: ‘His mentality is so rare for an Englishman – he actually has an American mentality.

‘He sees himself as a winner and is willing to talk about himself that way with a cocksure confidence that many English people have a difficult relationship with but Americans love.’

Just a year ago, however, his manager Thomas Tuchel described some of his behaviour on the pitch as ‘a bit repulsive’ and claimed it upset his own mother, Gabriele.

Bellingham was also accused of arrogance after yelling ‘Who else?’ following his spectacular overhead kick at Euro 2024 in Germany.

Yet fans have embraced his performances and personality, including the way he has led England’s squad in singing the team’s unlikely tournament anthem, Wonderwall by Oasis.

Jude has said his parents, who are understood to have separated but remain close, are his heroes and it was his grandfather William who inspired his patriotism.

William, a teacher from Southend who died in November 2020, has gone viral this week after a clip of him on Mastermind answering question after question on ‘Nigeria between 1900 and 1966’ went viral.

Adidas spotted Bellingham’s commercial potential long before he became a global superstar.

The sportswear giant signed him while he was still starring for Birmingham City’s first team at the age of 16.

By 17 he had already made his England debut against Ireland in the same month his beloved granddad William died.

Sam Handy, general manager of Adidas’s football division, said: ‘Jude has that aspirational quality that all good brands look for as an ambassador; anyone who has ever met him will tell you his demeanour is incredibly polite, humble and professional.

‘That said, he has an edge, an aura, that makes him comfortable under pressure and it’s clear that for him every moment he steps on the pitch is a chance to show the world what he can do and express himself.’

After a hugely successful spell with Borussia Dortmund, Bellingham followed in Beckham’s footsteps by joining Real Madrid in a £113million move.

One Spanish football executive told the Financial Times: ‘Fans and brands are increasingly drawn towards players and not just the teams they play for.

‘You want someone whose personality stands out above the rest. His celebration, his attitude, the way he carries himself both on and off the pitch — he has that unquantifiable thing that we call authenticity.’

Sir David Beckham is Britain’s first billionaire sportsman after he and wife Victoria doubled their wealth in the last year, according to the Sunday Times Rich List published in May.

The celebrity couple now have a combined fortune of £1.185 billion, a significant increase from the £500million estimated net worth they had on the 2025 list.

The major uptick in wealth is attributed to Sir David’s investments in the US, as the signing of Lionel Messi to Inter Miami until 2028 has lifted the value of his stake in the club, and a vast property development adjoining Inter’s home has provided another windfall.

Meanwhile revenues at Lady Beckham’s eponymous fashion line have topped £100million.

It came in the year that Beckham received his knighthood – but the family also suffered the heartbreak of their very public estrangement from their eldest son Brooklyn.

The foundations of Jude’s success were laid long before the fame and fortune arrived.

Bellingham’s mother Denise, whom he affectionately calls his ‘Queen’, shared his flat in Madrid’s exclusive La Finca district when he moved there.

She is reported to help cook his meals, make his bed and drive him to training.

A former HR professional, she manages her son’s financial affairs and is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in his career.

His father Mark Bellingham, a former West Midlands Police officer and prolific non-league striker nicknamed the ‘Non-League Pelé’, has largely focused on supporting Jude’s younger brother Jobe, now also a star at Borussia Dortmund.

The sacrifices made by both parents were considerable. For years they spent evenings and weekends ferrying their sons around the country for training sessions and matches.

While many young footballers seek independence from their parents, Bellingham has frequently spoken about the benefits of having his mother nearby.

At his Real Madrid unveiling, he said: ‘The role my mum is playing is massive. It is probably the biggest role of anyone, more than my coaches and managers, to be honest.’

Acting as a moderating influence as his profile continues to soar, Denise helps keep him grounded.

‘Without my mum, sometimes I’d get too low with the lows or too high with the highs and I stay pretty humble because I’ve got her around,’ he said.

‘It’s also great to have her there because she’s a great laugh as well. We get on so well and we’re always doing stuff together.’

Although Bellingham later idolised stars such as Wayne Rooney, his first footballing hero was his father.

Mark scored more than 700 goals in around 900 appearances during a remarkable non-league career, juggling spells with clubs including Leamington, Stourbridge and Sutton Coldfield Town alongside his police career.

He retired from football at the age of 41 in 2017 and is believed to have since stepped away from policing. He rarely discusses the achievements of either of his sons publicly – but is fiercely defensive of them.

A Southend United supporter, Mark introduced Jude to football, with the England star’s first live matches coming alongside his father at Roots Hall.

Speaking about his father in a recent interview, Jude said: ‘We talk about footballing heroes, and my dad was like my first.

‘When you go and watch him play every week in non-league, you know it’s not the Premier League or anything, but seeing the way that he played and the atmosphere, it made me fall in love with football so he was probably my first hero.

‘After the first few times of going, I’d start to pay a bit more attention to the games and stuff, the atmosphere and he’s scoring goals so you see him celebrating and stuff like that – you want that to be me.

‘Growing up, he’d always give me tips on what I could do and now it gets to a certain age and it sort of flips and that’s brilliant because we have that sort of relationship like father and son and then as I got older, like coach and player.’

His parents have acted as a grounding force for the midfielder.

And many believe Bellingham is uniquely positioned to become the defining sporting brand of his generation and the first English footballer since Sir David Beckham to turn worldwide fame into a billion-pound fortune.

Witnesses said a car travelling at high speed mounted the kerb before smashing into a lamppost in the Clermiston area on Thursday evening.

A driver reportedly crashed into a lamppost while being pursued by police in Edinburgh on Thursday evening.

The incident happened at around 6pm on July 16 on Clermiston Drive, where witnesses said a car travelling at high speed lost control before mounting the kerb and smashing into a lamppost.

Local residents claimed the vehicle had earlier been seen speeding along Clermiston Drive before returning towards Drum Brae Drive with police cars in pursuit.

According to witnesses, both the driver and passenger then abandoned the badly damaged grey car and fled on foot, with officers giving chase.

Pictures from the scene show the vehicle with extensive front-end damage. Several police vehicles and a recovery truck attended the incident.

Witness Steven Melville told our sister title Edinburgh Live: “I saw the car being driven at high speed up Clermiston Drive round about 6ish.

“And five minutes later it came back down again being chased by two cop cars, he took the corner at Hoseason Gardens at high speed, mounted the kerb and hit the lamppost.

“Both the driver and the passenger took off on foot and the police gave chase. That’s what I saw anyway.”

Wales Online

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water has warned a hosepipe ban is likely in parts of Wales this weekend. This will affect mid and south Ceredigion, together with parts of north Pembrokeshire and north Carmarthenshire.

The company said reservoir levels remain “healthy” but there are challenges producing, treating, storing and moving enough drinking water through the network quickly enough to meet “exceptional” demand.

The affected area covers around 33,000 properties, stretching from Llanon, Llangwyryfon and Cwm Ystwyth in Ceredigion, across to Crymych, Llanfyrnach and Nevern in north Pembrokeshire, and into parts of north Carmarthenshire, including Farmers, Pencader and Hermon.

In recent days, residents in Old Colwyn, Conwy, have experienced intermittent interruptions to water supplies without warning, causing huge local upset. More than 300 homes have been affected.

Although water supplies have since been restored here, a burst main near Llandegla is currently affecting supplies in “surrounding areas of Corwen and Wrexham”.

Dŵr Cymru doesn’t expect this incident to be resolved until late afternoon.

Government issues notice due to ‘serious concerns’ about how London council is run

Councillor Stuart Mathers, Leader of Hillingdon Labour, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): “This is a damning assessment of a Conservative administration that has been in power for nearly two decades. Concerns first raised by Labour have now been reinforced by external auditors, internal auditors, CIPFA and the Government itself, all pointing to significant weaknesses in governance, financial sustainability, organisational culture and financial management. That should concern every resident.

Love Island's Ellie Chadwick quits the villa as her fellow islanders choose to dump Finley Maddock in brutal decision as four stars leave the show

Love Island’s Ellie Chadwick has quit the villa after her fellow islanders chose to dump Finley Maddock.

It was revealed on Wednesday that the Scottish villa favourite had reportedly left the ITV dating show just days before the final.

And during Thursday night’s episode her final moments were aired as her fellow islanders chose to send home her partner Finley.

After the public vote, it was Elicia, Martha and Mica who were revealed as the three least favourite girls. And Finley, Jordan and Samraj who were the least favourite boys.

In a dramatic episode, Elicia and Jordan were revealed as the least popular and were automatically dumped from the villa.

It was then the difficult job of the remaining islanders to vote to decide which two islanders to send home out of the remaining four.

Announcing her decision to leave, Finley asked her: ‘Are you sure? I feel like I’ve put you in this situation. I feel I’ve just ruined your experience’

And after tense back and forth, the group decided to send home Martha and Finley.

Despite a turbulent past week in her relationship with Finley, Ellie began to cry as she told the islanders: ‘I know that he is my person.’

But as the vote was revealed the tears streamed down her face as she said: ‘I’m going guys I am going I can’t do it.’

Announcing her decision to leave, Finley asked her: ‘Are you sure? I feel like I’ve put you in this situation. I feel I’ve just ruined your experience.’

Ellie replied: ‘Who’s going to come walk through the doors and I’m going to have a connection like I did with you in two weeks? No one. I fought our corner, and it was a vote. There’s not much else I can do from that.’

The pair then had a tearful goodbye with their fellow islanders before packing their suitcases and heading on their way.

While Ellie and Finley survived the test of Casa Amor and their relationship appeared to be going from strength to strength, last week they faced a major bump in the road when Finley had his head turned by bombshell Elicia Bailey.

Ellie threatened to leave the villa several times during the heartache as Elicia recoupled with her man before they went on a flirty date which saw them share a kiss.

Yet Tuesday night’s episode saw the pair’s on/off romance back on track after Finley cut off his flirtation with Elicia and Ellie chose him in the recoupling.

But as the vote was revealed the tears streamed down her face as she said: 'I'm going guys I am going I can't do it'

Ellie is the third person to leave the show this year not via a dumping.

Days into the series George Knight left the villa for ‘personal reasons’. George has insisted he quit the villa after learning that a member of his family had a health concern, but sources have since shared the real reason behind his departure.

It’s claimed that while George’s story about his family is true, he has used it to hide the fact that he was axed after receiving a formal warning for using ‘unacceptable language’ in the villa.

George then learned of his family news at the same time, but there is no suggestion that ITV bosses attempted to cover up his behaviour.

Casa Amor bombshell Gabriel Garland was axed from the show after just a day when revelations about his past came to light, after it was not picked up in official background checks.

Jesy Nelson’s twin daughters suffer fresh health setback after SMA campaign

Former Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson has provided an update on her daughters (Picture: Jordan Pettitt/PA Wire)

Jesy Nelson has revealed how her twin daughters have suffered a fresh health setback after her campaign to screen newborn babies for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) secured a major breakthrough.

The former Little Mix star said she ‘can’t stop crying’ after learning all babies born in England will now be tested for the rare genetic condition at birth.

However, Jesy said that the historic change is ‘bittersweet’ as her daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, are ‘not great’.

The 25-year-old said her twins’ future is uncertain as medics are still assessing how much of their muscles died off before they were diagnosed late and then treated.

Both Ocean and Story were diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1, the most severe form of the muscle-wasting disease, after leaving hospital.

However, Jesy said that the diagnosis came too late after irreversible nerve damage and it is likely that they will never walk again.

Speaking to The Sun, Jesy discussed Ocean and Story’s most recent three-month review at St Ormond Street’s Children’s Hospital where doctors warned that the girls were not responding to the treatment how they had hoped.

‘Unfortunately, some of the numbers have gone down,’ she said.

‘We had a long discussion and there’s a possibility they may have to go back on treatment, which is just heartbreaking.

‘I constantly battle between manifesting they’re going to defy the odds and trying to come to accept that that may not happen.

‘It’s a really weird position to be in because you you think ‘well, if that doesn’t happen, am I just going to feel heartbroken for the rest of my life?’

‘Then you worry, if I accept it, am I also manifesting that?’

In her new Prime Video show, Jesy Nelson: Life Changing, the singer also broke down in tears over the guilt she carries and worries her children will blame her when they’re older.

She told the publication: ‘I know it’s not my fault, but when I watch back videos of when I brought them home and they were kicking their legs, I realise now that over the course of a month, they just stopped.

‘That’s the part where the guilt kicks in because I don’t understand how I didn’t see that. Why didn’t I spot that?’

This comes after Jesy shared heartbreaking footage of the moment she was told about her twins’ devastating diagnosis.

The 35-year-old posted footage from her Amazon Prime Video series: ‘Jesy Nelson: Life Changing’, which she ‘urges’ everyone to watch.

In the clip, Jesy can be seen rocking one of her babies from side to side while she and her former partner, Zion Foster, receive news that her twins’ ‘genetic test came back positive’ for the life-altering condition.

Burnham ‘casts a shadow over the economy’ as Reeves leaves No11 with dismal growth and a fragile future

Published

on

Latest sluggish growth figures come days before Andy Burnham takes office - and don't match what Rachel Reeves (pictured on Tuesday) has been claiming...

Andy Burnham will inherit a ‘fragile’ economy gripped by stagflation fears, experts warned on Thursday after the latest dismal growth figures.

Days before Mr Burnham enters Downing Street, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said gross domestic product (GDP) grew by just 0.1 per cent in May, after shrinking by 0.1 per cent in April.

It came as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) delivered a stark warning to the incoming Prime Minister not to put up public spending and instead get the public finances under control.

Official figures suggest the economy enjoyed a strong start to the year but has stuttered after Donald Trump’s Iran war disrupted supply chains and pushed up costs.

Some businesses also point to the ongoing impact of Labour’s tax hikes, minimum wage increases and workers’ rights policies in holding back growth.

And experts point to the risk that Britain suffers a bout of ‘stagflation’ – the toxic combination of stagnating growth and rising inflation.

Latest sluggish growth figures come days before Andy Burnham takes office – and don’t match what Rachel Reeves (pictured on Tuesday) has been claiming…

It comes in stark contrast to Chancellor Rachel Reeves’s claim in a speech to the City this week to have ‘beaten the odds’ to deliver a ‘strong’ economy.

Thursday’s GDP figures showed that while the huge services sector – ranging from bars and hotels to accountancy and law firms – grew by 0.3 per cent in May, other parts of the economy struggled. Manufacturing grew by just 0.1 per cent and the construction sector shrank by 0.8 per cent.

Stuart Morrison, research manager at the British Chambers of Commerce said: ‘The latest ONS data shows a fragile economy weighed down by geopolitical tensions and domestic cost pressures.’

And Suren Thiru, chief economist at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, said: ‘This dishearteningly weak rebound is unlikely to ease anxiety over the UK’s economic health.’

Mr Thiru said the ‘underwhelming’ figure highlighted that the UK remained vulnerable given the resumption of hostilities in the Middle East, pushing oil prices higher again.

Such an outcome ‘would further damage an already frail economy, strengthening stagflation risks’. he added – eroding the new PM’s ‘headroom’ for changing tax or spending plans.

‘The imminent change in Prime Minister risks casting a shadow over the UK economy, with heightened uncertainty over future tax policy likely to make consumers and businesses more reluctant to spend and invest,’ Mr Thiru said.

It came as the IMF’s latest report on the UK also stressed that the parlous state of the public finances could tie the new PM’s hands.

The IMF said that, amid ballooning debt and pressure from bond investors, Mr Burnham’s priority must be to stick to plans to bring down borrowing.

And in advice unlikely to find favour with Left-wing Labour MPs, it said the government must be ‘very selective’ when responding to new demands for spending.

The IMF acknowledged the pressures posed by the UK’s ageing population and rising defence spending commitments but warned against raising taxes even further to meet them.

‘With the tax-to-GDP ratio already set to reach historic levels by UK standards, meeting these pressures through tax measures alone would risk amplifying distortions and undermining growth prospects,’ it said.

The advice from the IMF came a day after Mr Burnham refused to rule out imposing a wealth tax when he comes to power, saying he ‘might be having to ask for a little more’.
