Games Inbox: Will the PS6 release be delayed?
The battle begins again (Metro)

The Thursday letters page doesn’t believe the PS6 will be out in 2027, as one reader tries to imagine if Nintendo bought Sonic the Hedgehog.

Next gen rodeo
So we’re at that part in the console cycle where we’re comparing meaningless numbers and trying to decide which console is more ‘powerful’? It always happens, I know, this is not my first rodeo.

Even if the number of teraflops was a proper way of measuring the power, which I don’t think it is, nothing matters but how the console is used. Nobody but Microsoft devs are going to prioritise the next gen Xbox, so everyone’s going to be optimising their games for the PlayStation 6, just as they have the last two gens.

The Xbox Series X is, on paper, more powerful than the PlayStation 5 but when have we seen even a single game that proves that? It’ll be just the same with Project Helix. On paper, the Switch 2 is not powerful at all, but we all saw the Zelda: Ocarina Of Time footage and things like Cyberpunk 2077 running well on it. It’s not the console that makes the difference, it’s the developer.

But anyway, there’s not a chance in Hades I’m going to buy a PlayStation 6 next year or any time soon and I still don’t really believe it’s coming out then anyway. I know all the evidence suggests it is, but it’s not needed and the component crisis is going to make it much, much too expensive. There’s no way it’s not going to be delayed until at least 2028 and if I’m wrong Sony are even dumber than I think.

The third way
I kind of feel like Fire Emblem needs a third setting in between the causal and permadeath modes. Casual feels too safe, with very little consequence for just throwing your troops to their deaths, but in permadeath mode I end up worrying that if I lose too many I’ll get stuck later on with a limited team, so I abuse the save function and it turns into casual with extra steps.

A nice halfway house would be if fallen troops were injured and couldn’t be selected for a certain amount of time, then maybe when they recovered they would go down a level or two. That way losing soldiers would still be a problem that you want to avoid, but not so ruinous as to require save scumming.
TGN Professor

GC: That seems a good idea, and not dissimilar to how Star Wars Zero Company works.

Xbox generation
I’d say I’m an Xbox supporter by default. It was the new gen console I picked. I’m not a company supporter but I thought it was more aesthetically pleasing than the PlayStation 5. The sacking of all the people isn’t great, but Sony’s hands aren’t the cleanest either.

I stuck with Xbox even though the Xbox One was pretty bad for load speeds. I’m glad the Xbox Series X is backwards compatible, as most of my games are from that gen and can be got fairly cheap. I’ve had every Sony device except the PlayStation 5 and while it’s not likely to get purchased I don’t think the PlayStation 6 will come to me either. I’ll hopefully just update my PC with a pre-owned 4070 or higher.

The next step
From the first announcement of Xbox layoffs I suspected a lot of people outside of the studios would be losing their jobs. After all, they did say they wanted to drastically reduce the number of layers to mostly just have people who make the games.

Now after Tuesday’s announcement I think it’s fairly safe to assume once Fable, Gears Of War: E-Day, and Clockwork Revolution have released their studios will move to Activision and Bethesda (or one or two might close) and the whole management/publishing layer of Xbox Game Studios will be gone.

I’ve not really bought into the idea that Microsoft is going to exit the games industry, but Activision Blizzard and Bethesda are still separate legal entities to Microsoft, so it does leave them in a position where the companies can quite easily be spun out into independent companies with ownership transferred directly to the shareholders.

Bad guess
This cashback that Sony is doing will be mostly on cheap games that’s over five years old and the money you earn will only be available to spend on some games and before anyone that says no one knows the details yet, this is Sony. This is a company that’s trying to own the whole of the console market.

This is a company whose T&Cs are so tight you never get your money back in cash. This is a company that mocks its customers. This is an offer that doesn’t offer anything of value, this is a company that’s trying to pull the wool over our eyes. It’s greed. When this is fully out let’s see if Sony will let you use your cash back on day one Sony titles. Sony will take pounds and give back pennies on this.
David

GC: The games confirmed so far are all 2026 titles: The Blood Of Dawnwalker, Halloween, Star Wars Zero Company, and Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2.

Super Sonic bros.
That was an interesting article about Sonic being potentially axed by Sega before the success of the films.

It did raise a couple of questions in my head though.

In hindsight how important does the character remodelling seem now?

The director of the first movie pushed its release back a few months because of the backlash of the hideous looking Sonic that can only be best described as a grown man in a scary blue onesie.

That was definitely the right decision and I’m sure the director got a lot of pushback from people higher up regarding that matter. So good for him.

Also, if Sega had have written Sonic the Hedgehog off. What would have been the likelihood of someone like Microsoft trying to buy the rights?

Especially as Microsoft where about to release the Xbox Series X/S.

I would like to think Nintendo would want to buy him, as it just seems like a better fit with the other franchises they have to offer.

Anyway, thank goodness things worked out the way they did. Not only did we get some great movies out of it, but I don’t think many gamers these days remember a time when Sonic the Hedgehog wasn’t a relevant character on our gaming shop shelves.

Long may it continue.

GC: That’s an interesting thought; Nintendo does seem the most obvious suitor.

Death Adder goes forth
Perhaps I’ve missed it, but I haven’t seen you mention the Golden Axe cartoon on these pages before.

It certainly doesn’t look top tier but seems to be positioned as a comedy, which looks quite fun and definitely worth a look.

What a shame I don’t have and don’t intend to subscribe to Paramount+.
Sven

GC: That was our feeling too.

Name change
It’s interesting to read between the lines on the shuffling around going on at Xbox, over how this consolidation plays into rumours of their future hardware plans. There has been a drip of news for a while Project Helix is just a ‘PC in a box’, which seems legit when you see Microsoft’s moves around official emulation of older console titles on PC, the ROG Ally X, and that disc-to-digital conversion*.

If the new Xbox is just a living room PC, à la Steam Machine, then emptying it’s officially branded publishing arm into Activision and Bethesda would seem to suggest the Xbox name itself is being put out to pasture. Future games will be sold on various store fronts across the PC space as Activision or Bethesda releases, same with ports to Switch 2 or PlayStation 5/6.

Let’s take that even further, what are the odds on Project Helix being branded under Microsoft’s Surface line of devices? A Surface TV high end box designed to be a full living room Co-pilot AI driven entertainment hub… the Xbox One launch dream fulfilled.

Microsoft probably doesn’t want the market thinking it’s just the next iteration of its failed games console when the next generation rolls around after all. They could reserve the Xbox name for what Game Pass would become in that world, so buying an Xbox is just buying access to your digital library and Game Pass for Surface TV or whatever other PC based system you have.

Thinking of Xbox as a competitor to Sony and Nintendo in the console wars has been old-fashioned thinking for a while, as have been most gamer suggestions of how Xbox could recover with exclusive games and whatnot. We’re heading into a much changed gaming landscape where that stuff is irrelevant.
Marc

*Hope Sony follow this route with disc-to-digital for when the new PlayStation portable rolls around. Still have a few PlayStation 4 titles on disc and it’d be nice to take them on the go. Given current form I doubt it.

Takeaway takedown! Moment police disguised as food delivery driver and street cleaner pounce on knife suspect

Published

Roy Hallissey had been keeping clear of officers despite regularly turning up at a market in Poplar, east London

A wanted man carrying a machete was caught in a police ambush after officers went undercover as a takeaway courier and a street cleaner.

Roy Hallissey had been keeping clear of officers despite regularly turning up at a market in Poplar, east London.

Police knew the area was one of his regular haunts and that he travelled there on a powerful electric bike.

But their attempts to locate him had been complicated by the fact that Hallissey would avoid the market whenever he noticed police nearby.

That prompted officers to take a more unconventional approach.

Instead of arriving in uniform, two Metropolitan Police officers blended into the surroundings.

One posed as a street cleaner, complete with a handcart, while another adopted the appearance of a takeaway delivery worker.

The officers then closed in on Hallissey from separate directions, catching him by surprise and preventing him from making another getaway.

When they searched him, they discovered a large machete hidden around his waist.

Hallissey was already wanted after being convicted of a stabbing but failing to turn up for the hearing at which he was due to be sentenced.

He was also wanted in connection with a separate allegation involving an assault on an emergency worker, after failing to attend court over that charge.

The arrest also uncovered a breach of a criminal behaviour order which had barred him from the Poplar area.

Insp Frank Hartley, from the neighbourhood team, said: ‘Not only was Hallissey caught in breach of a behaviour order which was meant to prevent him being in the area, he was also found in possession of a dangerous weapon which may well have been used to inflict serious violence.

‘Across the Met we are working every day to identify, locate and prosecute wanted offenders because we know the harm that they cause to communities, and the likelihood they will go on to commit further crimes.

‘Through careful planning and some creative tactics, officers were able to identify and arrest Hallissey and he is now back in custody awaiting sentencing.’

Hallissey was taken before Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, May 29, where he admitted a series of offences.

These included possessing a bladed article, breaching his criminal behaviour order, driving without insurance and driving while disqualified.

He also pleaded guilty to assaulting police and escaping lawful custody.

He is due to return to court for sentencing on Wednesday, October 7.

Tesco launches new service nationwide after initial trial

The supermarket is now available as an option on Deliveroo across the UK, with items available to be delivered in as little as 20 minutes.

The nationwide rollout across 75 UK towns and cities follows a successful trial across 147 Tesco stores.

The first order, placed through Tesco’s Limbury Mead Express, included last-minute breakfast and lunchbox essentials such as bread, spreads and fruit.

“Launching nationwide on Deliveroo gives millions more people another convenient way to shop Tesco, bringing our great quality, value and range to even more customers, alongside the added benefits of Clubcard Prices and earning Clubcard points.

“Whether it’s a forgotten ingredient, a last-minute family meal or a quick top-up shop, customers now have even more ways to get products delivered when and where they need them.”

The service is available in cities including Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester, London, Manchester, Sheffield, Bournemouth, Cardiff and Belfast.

Rob Harris, chief revenue officer at Deliveroo, said: “Since our trial launched, it’s been clear just how much customers value having Tesco on Deliveroo, so we’re delighted to now be taking that nationwide.

“This means millions more customers can get Tesco’s range, quality and value delivered in as little as 20 minutes, with Clubcard Prices and points along the way.”

Tesco announces plan to introduce digital displays in its supermarkets

Back in July, Tesco announced plans to introduce digital displays in place of traditional paper tags.

The rollout began in four locations—one Tesco Express and three larger supermarkets.

The scheme will eventually expand to around 3,000 stores nationwide over the next two years.

The electronic shelf labels (ESLs) will display prices digitally and can be updated instantly from Tesco’s central systems, ensuring that prices on the shelves always match those at the checkout.

Kevin Tindall, Tesco’s UK operations managing director, said the technology would help modernise stores while allowing colleagues to spend more time assisting customers.

Tesco has partnered with Chinese technology company Hanshow for the rollout, following successful trials at its Royston and St Neots stores.

Hanshow described the rollout as “a new milestone in digital store transformation.”

Iris previously discussed her personal sense of style during an interview with Vogue Spain.

‘I don’t dress for anyone, I just try to feel good and be comfortable. I let myself be carried away by how I am in an intuitive way, even if it’s not what is understood as chic or cool,’ she said.

Investment firm that teamed up with Travis Kelce to save Six Flags is now urging theme park to explore a sale

Investment firm that teamed up with Travis Kelce to save Six Flags is now urging theme park to explore a sale

An investment firm that teamed up with NFL star Travis Kelce to save Six Flags Entertainment Corporation is now urging the embattled theme park operator to explore a sale, according to a new report.

Investors including New York-based hedge fund Jana Partners and Kelce — Kansas City Chiefs tight end and global pop star Taylor Swift’s husband — acquired a combined stake of about 9 percent in Six Flags last October, then valued at $200 million.

Jana Partners hoped to improve Six Flags’ marketing and enhance customers’ experience at the parks, The Wall Street Journal previously said when reporting on the acquisition. The investment firm also reportedly wanted to explore a potential sale to boost the operators’ share price.

Six Flags stock traded around $12.43 per share Wednesday, around half the price of its yearly high of nearly $25.

Amid growing losses and lower attendance at the parks, Jana Partners is now pushing forward with its idea of a potential sale, the Journal reported Tuesday.

Jana Partners called Six Flags’ board of directors Tuesday to immediately hire an investment bank to explore a sale, people familiar with the matter told the Journal. The hedge fund reportedly cited its disappointment with the theme park operators’ second-quarter earnings.

Six Flags had a net loss of $203 million in its second quarter, compared with a net loss of $100 million during the same time last year, according to company earnings reported in early August.

The theme park operator saw 13.1 million guest visits in its second quarter — about a 7 percent decrease from 14.2 million visits a year before, according to the report.

When asked about Jana Partners urging Six Flags to explore a sale, the theme park operator told The Independent that it is “committed to acting in the best interests of all shareholders.

“We have a history of engaging constructively with all of our shareholders and value their perspectives. We are focused on executing on our strategic priorities and are committed to maximizing shareholder value.”

The Independent has reached out to Jana Partners for comment.

Kelce, a theme park enthusiast, celebrated the investment in Six Flags last October, writing on Instagram, “Couldn’t pass up the opportunity to continue the tradition and make Cedar Point and Six Flags even more special for the next generation of families!”

The football player was referring to Six Flags’ Cedar Point theme park in Ohio, which he grew up going to.

“Excited to partner with JANA Partners as an investor in Six Flags. So crazy to even imagine this is real, but you gotta love it when life comes full circle,” Kelce said at the time.

Six Flags is also facing legal trouble after three people who say they suffered major brain injuries riding one of its roller coasters in California sued the operator.

The coaster at the center of the lawsuits is the X2 at Six Flags Magic Mountain, which features “360-degree rotating seats and head-first, face down drops,” according to the theme park’s website.

“No ride like that should be allowed to exist,” attorney Christopher Bulone told reporters when announcing the lawsuits Tuesday, per CNN.

Six Flags wouldn’t comment on the pending cases but told local outlet KABC that the coaster “remains closed at this time.”

Campaigners question need for planned BESS near Northallerton

Campaigners question need for planned BESS near Northallerton

The group fighting the proposed Mowbray BESS scheme has highlighted an Ofgem update which reveals that there are already far more battery projects planned across Britain than the country is forecast to require.

NatPower has submitted a planning application to North Yorkshire Council for a 1GW BESS near East Rounton, between Northallerton and Yarm.

BESS plants store electricity from the grid at times of lower demand and release it back to the grid when it is needed most.

NatPower, which has also filed an application for a similar BESS scheme at South Kilvington, near Thirsk, says the facilities make an essential contribution to ensuring reliable, secure and affordable electricity for the country.

But campaign group, Protect Northallerton, Yarm & Our Villages, says around 90GW of battery storage is either already operating or in the reformed grid connections queue, compared with a projected requirement of around 29GW by 2035.

The group also points to National Energy System Operator figures which it says indicate the total could potentially reach around 121.5GW if projects currently in the system do not drop out.

Campaigners say the figures should prompt greater scrutiny of whether further battery schemes, including the Mowbray development, are necessary.

Andrew Sheldon-Thomson, from the campaign group, said: “Ofgem and the Government are clear – the battery pipeline is already too big and it threatens to lift bills.

“But planning policy still pushes councils to sign off more projects. It makes no sense to call it an oversupply one minute and force through unnecessary schemes the next.”

The group says the issue is particularly relevant following changes to national planning policy in August which it says increased support for battery storage developments.

The campaigners are opposing the proposed Mowbray BESS and say the latest national figures strengthen their argument that the need for individual battery developments should be more closely examined.

Mr Sheldon-Thomson added: “In the rush to net zero, planning rules stop councils from asking whether a battery scheme is actually needed. The result is that unneeded projects are rubber-stamped as ‘green’ and forced through planning.”

The Local Democracy Reporting Service has contacted NatPower for a response.

They were labelled ‘pervert glasses’. Will a camera-free version transform their image?

Published

BBC InDepth

And other companies are trying to address privacy concerns in different ways – without getting rid of the camera.

The Taiwanese firm HTC recently launched Vive Eagle glasses, which cost less than a quarter of Snap’s.

Thomas Dexmier, a vice president at HTC Vive, says that if anyone near an Eagle specs wearer says “stop filming” or “stop recording”, and it is picked up by one of the four microphones, the camera will deactivate.

And he adds that all recordings captured by the glasses are encrypted, and the firm itself cannot see them – though this also means HTC cannot flag harmful content.

“We acknowledge that there are some challenges, potentially becoming a real problem, especially for women,” he said.

He said HTC Vive was working to make it as difficult as possible for the tech to be misused but said it was “too early to comment” on whether the firm would consider a version without cameras.

Ultimately, Wood thinks that camera-enabled glasses are “not going away”.

He says the current moment reminds him of the 2000s, when some people said that mobile phone companies couldn’t install cameras in their devices because of similar concerns over privacy. “There’s an inevitability there,” he says.

Rockliffe Hall hotel reopens with new Atlas restaurant

The hotel, near Hurworth, Darlington, has undergone a major renovation of its Grade II-listed estate, with new rooms created in the East Wing and six new food and drink venues introduced.

At the centre of the redevelopment is Atlas, a new 36-cover restaurant by chef James Close and his wife Maria.

James was previously chef-patron at the two-Michelin-starred Raby Hunt restaurant, near Darlington.

The Morning Room will serve afternoon tea, while Café Terra will operate as a café and bakery for hotel guests, spa visitors and members of the public.

The Clubhouse, overlooking Rockliffe’s golf course, has also been developed as a sports bar and restaurant.

The reopening has also seen work completed on the East Wing, formerly known as the Old Hall.

Its rooms and public spaces have been redesigned while retaining historic features, with the redevelopment taking inspiration from the North East’s industrial heritage.

The work has brought the total number of rooms and suites at Rockliffe to 43.

Prices start from £550 per night for a room on a bed and breakfast basis, rising to £1,200 per night for suites.

Rockliffe’s existing facilities include a 50,000 sq ft spa, an 18-hole championship golf course, tennis and padel courts and a gym.

The estate also offers walking and cycling routes alongside the River Tees.

Shauna Robb, group chief operating officer, said: “This reopening represents a defining moment for Rockliffe.

Descendants of society diarist Henry ‘Chips’ Channon are locked in row with neighbours over noisy motocross track on his ‘tranquil’ country estate

A motocross track at Kelvedon Hall in Essex is at the centre of a planning row

Society diarist Henry ‘Chips’ Channon called his multi-million pound Essex estate a ‘dream of quiet well-bred tranquillity’ – but his descendants now want permission for as many as 20 motocross bikes to roar around its grounds.

Kelvedon Hall is at the centre of a planning row over two tracks and three buildings that were put up without permission.

The estate has applied retrospectively to Brentwood Council to keep the facilities, which are already being used for riding sessions.

Planning papers say the tracks currently operate on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays between 10am and 3pm.

The application also seeks permission for more frequent use, including private and corporate sessions.

Those behind the scheme had believed the activity could take place for up to 28 days a year without planning permission.

But the council became involved after a noise complaint in April.

Kelvedon Hatch Parish Council discussed the issue at a meeting that month and said the motocross operation could potentially amount to a statutory noise nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Tests at the estate involved eight motocross bikes, while consultants also modelled the impact of up to 20 being used at once.

The row has already hit plans for The Only Way Is SX, a planned motocross event that had been due to take place at the estate.

It had been slated as ‘one of the biggest family-friendly motorsport events of the year’.

But organisers announced it had been postponed until 2027 while the planning issue is resolved.

Kelvedon Hall is also home to The Right Track, a scheme using motocross and other activities to work with young people, including offenders and those at risk of offending.

Essex Police has previously praised the project as a ‘great opportunity’ for youngsters.

The Grade I-listed Georgian mansion was bought by Channon in 1937 after he went looking for a country house close to his Southend constituency.

The American-born Conservative MP and socialite quickly fell in love with Kelvedon and began restoring it with his friend Gerald Wellesley, an architect and heir to the Dukedom of Wellington.

Just before buying it, Channon wrote in his diary: ‘The place is a dream of quiet well-bred tranquillity.’

He returned to Kelvedon repeatedly in his diaries and later wrote that it was looking ‘a dream of vernal lush beauty’.

He also described it as ‘perfection, a paradise for Paul’, referring to his son.

The grand mansion was built in 1743 and sits in the Essex countryside.

Its red-brick main house has a three-storey central block flanked by wings and still contains much of its historic interior, including ornate reception rooms, a private chapel and Adam-style decoration.

The estate also includes historic outbuildings, a stable block, orangery and an imposing entrance lodge added during Channon’s restoration of the property.

Channon was one of the best-connected figures in pre-war British society and his diaries became famous after his death for their indiscreet accounts of royalty, politicians and aristocrats.

He moved in circles that included Edward VIII, Wallis Simpson, the Duke and Duchess of Kent and Prince Paul of Yugoslavia.

His parties were equally lavish.

He wrote of women arriving ‘dripping with jewels’, while guests were said to have been served cocktails laced with Benzedrine.

Kelvedon became one of the great loves of his life and he continued writing about it until his death in 1958.

The estate then passed to his son Paul, later Lord Kelvedon, and later to Paul’s son Henry.

After Henry died aged 51 in 2021, it passed to his widow Katie Channon, who now owns the estate.

The Channon family are connected to the Guinness brewing dynasty through marriage.

The council is considering the retrospective application.
