A spider here, a spider there. Spider-Man fans are lucky because these days, there seems to be a spider just about everywhere. With the arrival of Tom Holland’s return to the iconic suit in Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day just a few months away, the hype to see what the character will make of the mess that he made back in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home is quickly growing to a fever pitch. And then, there’s the upcoming Prime Video series, Spider-Noir, which will see Nicolas Cage’s beloved too-cool-for-school character step out of the animated world and into one of live-action. Speaking of the animated world, there’s also Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse slated to hit cinemas in 2027 with a load of beloved characters voiced by the likes of Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, and Jason Schwartzman returning for yet another adventure after a jaw-dropping cliffhanger from 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

At CinemaCon 2026, Sony finally unveiled the first look at the long-awaited third and final installment of the acclaimed animated Spider-Saga, along with some brand-new images. The first of the four new images features Miles (Shameik Moore) reuniting with his beloved father, Jefferson Davis (Bryan Tyree Henry), whom he hopes to save from The Spot’s (Jason Schwartzman) multiversal threat. Speaking of multiversal threats, the next image has Miles in a chokehold from his arch Spider-rival, Miguel O’Hara (AKA Spider-Man 2099, voiced by Marvel veteran Oscar Isaac), now donning a much more sinister-looking black and white suit (though that could also be a product of whatever action set piece they’re a part of). Jefferson Davis returns again in the third image, this time much younger and side-by-side with his estranged brother Aaron Davis (Mahershala Ali), likely before Aaron became the ruthless Kingpin (Liev Schrieber) enforcer, The Prowler. Finally, the Spider-Punk known as Hobie Brown (Daniel Kaluuya) also returns to help save Jefferson from The Spot, just in time for Kaluuya’s upcoming spin-off project that’s in development now.

It’s a Spectacular Time To Be a Spider-Man Fan

As mentioned earlier, the amount of Spider-Man projects in development at Sony is massive, and, thankfully, none of them are any more ill-conceived villain spin-offs like Morbius or Kraven the Hunter (though there is an animated Venom movie on the way that sounds pretty cool). In just a few months, Tom Holland’s widely beloved MCU take on the character will team up with The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) to stop a brand-new threat in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Naturally, it’s heavily speculated that Holland’s Peter Parker will have some sort of role in Avengers: Doomsday and/or Avengers: Secret Wars. As for the wider Spider-Verse, fans can look forward to Nicolas Cage’s historic live-action Spider-Noir series on Prime Video as well as Daniel Kaluuya’s Spider-Punk spin-off movie.

According to new reports, the two Bravo personalities have been accused of illegally intercepting Lisa’s ex-husband, Lenny Hochstein‘s, phone calls. The charges come years after Lisa was accused of planting a “listening device” on Lenny’s car to “monitor” his calls, according to Page Six.

Legal documents filed in May 2023 claim Lisa put “at least one” listening device to gain “access and monitor his private, non-public communications involving this litigation.”

Lenny claimed his reality star ex “compromised the integrity” of their contentious divorce, adding that he had “no knowledge” of what information Lisa had obtained.

Lisa’s representative vehemently denied the claims, stating, “There is no truth to that. It seems as if they are just trying to distract everyone with their lies.”

“This court has already sided with Lisa on many of these issues, including the lies that are being presented by the woman who broke up their home and family,” the rep added.

Continuing to stick to his sci-fi roots, the celebrated filmmaker is preparing to step away from giant lizard monsters and instead embrace a good old classic robot showdown. Tonight, during Sony’s presentation at the opening night of CinemaCon, attendees were the first to catch a peek at Yamazaki’s upcoming production, Grandgear, and learned that it will crash into cinemas on February 18, 2028. Crushing one milestone after the next, the movie is the first English-language flick to hail from Yamazaki and will be backed by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, which immediately places it in great hands.

In the first look shared tonight, all hell broke loose as two giant machines tossed around and pummeled one another. While we didn’t get much by way of storyline, the underlying rumble sounds teased what’s sure to be one of the studio’s major blockbusters in two years’ time.

What We Know About ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’

As of right now, the gang behind Godzilla Minus Zero, which includes Toho Studios and Robot Communications, have been keeping plot details surrounding the sequel under wraps. However, we’re expecting it to be just as action-packed and exciting as the movie that came before it. On top of that, it already appears that it will pick up and build on the universe first established by Godzilla Minus One, which is terrific news for fans who loved the strong narrative penned by Yamazaki. With release dates set for November 3 in Japan and November 6 in the United States, the clock is already counting down on the wait for the return of the legendary beast.

As an ‘80s kid, I’ve been playing Super Mario Bros. and its vast array of spinoffs for my entire life. These games are a core part of my childhood, and I basically grew up alongside Mario. At every new stage of my development, there was yet another Nintendo console and another title featuring everyone’s favorite plucky plumber. I dutifully snagged them all, and these days, it’s only a matter of time before I thrust Switch 2 controllers into visiting friends’ hands so we can duke it out on Mario Kart World.

For all these reasons and more, I was shocked at how cold The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026) left me. After all, the movie is full of fan service catering to my generation, and practically every frame is chock-full of Easter eggs for longtime Nintendo fans to appreciate. But a good movie must be more than the sum of its parts, and no amount of cool scenes and colorful new characters can change the fact that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has a paper-thin story told in the most plodding way. Too mindless for adults and too boring for children, it’s a blockbuster cartoon in search of an audience that doesn’t really exist.

Screwing Up The World’s Simplest Story

When The Super Mario Bros. Movie came out, I found it relatively charming. It was neat to see my favorite childhood video game characters so vividly animated, and they were brought to life by an immensely talented vocal cast. Jack Black did a particularly excellent job as Bowser, and thanks to his gusto performance, that freakin’ peaches song will be stuck in my head until my dying day. The plot was straightforward, but the film leaned into that simplicity by focusing on the driving narrative of the entire franchise: the good guys need to save a damsel in distress.

By comparison, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie makes things way too complicated. On paper, the core plot is mostly the same. A different princess (Rosalina) has been kidnapped by a different villain (Bowser, Jr.), and our heroes have to go kick shell and save the day. Unfortunately, the plot often gets bogged down by mechanical minutiae, including an unnecessarily drawn-out story about the shrunken Bowser getting his groove back and a wildly boring plot about Peach and Toad figuring out where they need to go. That last plot point is particularly offensive because it drags the heretofore breezy story to a grinding halt.

New Characters Can Only Take You So Far

Pacing is, without a doubt, the worst thing about The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Taken in small bites, the movie has lots of individually entertaining sections. The meet-cute with Yoshi is nice, for example, and the introduction of Star Fox is so fun that I could ignore the most blatant setup for a spinoff ever put on film. Plus, all the action scenes are well-done, and I particularly enjoyed a climactic dungeon crawl that recreated the boss battles of the first Super Mario Bros. It’s an homage so blatant that Bowser, Jr. has a security system featuring pixilated graphics straight out of that classic NES game.

But none of this ever adds up to a cohesive whole. With respect to the animators from Illumination (whose work is truly breathtaking on both an aesthetic and a technical level), most of this movie felt like those empty action scenes that AI bros love to show off on platforms like X. These “prompt engineers” are always so pleased that they created an action scene by typing in stuff like “Hulk fights Doctor Doom,” and they get downvoted to hell by actual film lovers. Those movie gurus all tell the AI bros the same thing: that a good movie has to be more than a cool CGI action scene.

When Action Scenes Just Aren’t Enough

Unfortunately, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie didn’t get that particular memo. The animators and voice cast are giving it their all, but the only really good things about the film are the frenetic action scenes. Collectively, they provide serious spectacle. What Nintendo fan doesn’t want to see Fox McCloud barrel roll through explosions on the big screen, or to finally see Mario drop Bowser into the lava? But there are far fewer action set pieces than you might think, and the only thing connecting them is a shopworn fetch quest plot led by characters who seem almost as bored as those of us in the audience.

Going into The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, I worried that I would be biased in its favor. After all, I’m the lifetime Nintendo fanboy who enjoyed The Super Mario Bros. Movie quite a bit. A sequel that takes everything up a few notches while prominently featuring Star Fox really seemed like the kind of blockbuster popcorn film I’d want to inject straight into my veins. Sadly, I left the theater fighting sleep and contending with a very sobering realization: video games are meant to be played, not watched.

As a platforming adventure franchise, each Mario game can afford to be a badly-plotted action romp because, as players, it’s thrilling to pick up a controller and fight our way through Bowser and his minions. Unfortunately, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is proof that just watching the action unfold (no matter how beautifully it’s animated) will never be as exciting unless the characters and story are truly compelling. As a lifetime Nintendo nerd, I leave this as the parting words to my favorite character: “Thank you, Mario. But our good movie is in another castle!”

Although Halloween is still months away, Crunchyroll may already have the season’s defining anime horror hit. This series premiered a few months ago to generally positive reviews, making it one of the platform’s standout titles that’s bingeable in one sitting. Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary tells a supernatural story about the title character, Kaya Sato, a kindergartner with an unusually powerful sixth sense who secretly protects those around her by confronting the ghosts that haunt them.

Despite its title, the Crunchyroll series presents Kaya in stark contrast to how she is perceived onscreen, where others label her a troublemaker since they don’t understand her strange behavior. However, everything changes when Chie Hasumi, a teacher assigned to handle her, uncovers the truth behind the child’s actions. Across 12 episodes, boasting near-perfect Crunchyroll ratings and blending suspense, horror, and comedy, Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary has quickly established itself as one of 2026’s most talked-about anime.

‘Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary’ Is Not Your Typical Horror Anime

Inspired by Tarō Yuri’s ongoing manga series that began serialization in 2022, Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary closely follows the structure of its source material, with each episode centering on a new supernatural encounter. Imagine wandering spirits attached to everyday objects and aggressive entities that feed on fear, and that’s not even half of what Kaya experiences. She never seems to have any ill intent when she’s fighting these evil spirits or giving blunt commands that may seem selfish, like blocking other kids from using the swings. But since no one is on her side, this leaves her viewed as a troubled child. That’s until Chie Hasumi comes into the picture.

Central to the story is Kaya’s relationship with her teacher, Chie-sensei, who is initially assigned to manage her. Chie’s perspective serves as the audience’s entry point into the story’s reality; her skepticism slowly gives way to fear and, eventually, understanding as she witnesses undeniable proof of the supernatural. It’s heartening to see Kaya so relieved to have a friend and an adult who believes her by the end of the first episode, while others still dismiss her actions as disruptive. Viewers witness an apparent shift in the duo’s dynamic from frustration and confusion to trust and quiet partnership, thereby grounding the anime emotionally and providing a human counterweight to its more disturbing elements.

What truly sets Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary apart is its solid balance of tone, albeit not perfect. To create a sense of unease, the anime combines childhood innocence with a creepy atmosphere. Bright classrooms and playgrounds turn into settings for eerie encounters, while Kaya’s straightforward approach to confronting spirits adds a layer of dark, almost ironic humor. This tonal duality ensures the series never leans too far into outright terror, instead maintaining a deliberately constructed atmosphere that feels both intimate and off-putting.

Despite these strengths and its 4.7 out of 5 stars on Crunchyroll, viewers have found the horror series relies on loud distortion effects that can feel more distracting than unnerving, occasionally undercutting the carefully built tension. Rather than enhancing the atmosphere, these abrupt audio cues sometimes pull audiences out of immersive scenes, making certain scares feel more forced than organic; however, they become subtler as the show progresses.

The Team Behind ‘Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary’ Brings Its Horror to Life

A major part of Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary’s success lies in the strength of the creative team behind it, whose combined efforts elevate the series beyond a standard horror anime. The series, broadcast from January 11 to March 29, 2026, was produced by East Fish Studio and directed by Hiroshi Ikehata, with series composition handled by Shigeru Murakoshi. The collaboration results in a character-driven work that emphasizes restrained storytelling and atmosphere.

The voice cast plays an equally crucial role in bringing the story to life, with character designs by Taro Yamada and Hiroyuki Moriguchi. Kaya is voiced by Azusa Tachibana (known for her role in Netflix’s Dandadan) in the original anime and Lexi Fontaine in the English dub.
