Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber are seemingly marking their eighth wedding anniversary with a friendly game of pool.

“8 years until infinity ❤️ NEW BEGINNINGS ♾️,” Justin, 32, wrote via Instagram on Sunday, September 13, sharing a handful of images of himself playing a round of the beloved bar game with his wife, 29. “I love you baby Happy Anniversary 😘.”

Hailey replied in the comments section, writing, “8 years of me being horrendous at playing pool 😍😍.”

The Rhode founder reposted Justin’s PDA-filled roundup to her Instagram Stories, along with the caption, “🙈 🤍.”

The “Peaches” singer and Hailey have been married since September 2018, later welcoming son Jack Blues in August 2024. (Jack turned 2 late last month, which the couple commemorated with an intimate pancake breakfast.)

“It’s total bliss for the two of them,” a source exclusively told Us after Hailey gave birth. “Hailey is enjoying and savoring these moments being a new mom. She is over the moon and in [the] mom zone, and completely focused on the health of the baby.”

The insider further noted that Justin was a “very hands-on” father to Jack.

While raising their son, Justin and Hailey also learned new truths about their marriage.

“We’re just taking it a day at a time,” Hailey told GQ in a November 2025 profile. “We both feel very protective of our son and I don’t think that’s ever going to change, but our life is our life and it is really public, so I think we’re just going to cross every bridge that we need to when we get there. But as of right now, I feel really comfortable about the way we are sharing things and not sharing things.”

At the time, Hailey hinted whether she and the Grammy nominee had plans to expand their family of three.

“I don’t think there’s anything someone can tell you about it that will ever, ever, ever prepare you until you do it yourself,” she told the outlet. “But I feel much more prepared to do it again, as opposed to how not prepared I felt doing it for the first time. And I think for me personally, there’s so much unknown to it, but so much happens and so much changes and you evolve in a totally different way that you would never be able to prepare for until you do it.”

As for Justin, he’s equally enjoyed life as a family man. His latest album, Swag, even features sweet shout-outs to both Hailey and Jack.

The Walking Dead franchise kicked off on AMC in 2010, and after 11 seasons and a variety of spin-offs, it’s still going strong, 16 years later. But that doesn’t mean the cast and showrunner of Dead City didn’t want to shake things up in Season 3, deciding to experiment and take chances with elements that haven’t been explored previously. Whether it was pushing the character dynamics in different directions, showing an alternate reality of life without the apocalypse and walkers, or letting us see what a sitcom in this world would look like, things have definitely felt different this season. One thing that is exactly the same is that Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) are fighting walkers to keep their community safe while human enemies often become an even greater threat to their survival.

After watching the season finale, Collider got the opportunity to chat with new showrunner Seth Hoffman, who previously worked on Seasons 4, 5 and 6 of the mothership series, about his approach to Season 3 of Dead City and how he’d like to continue to experiment moving forward in possible future seasons. During the interview, he discussed doing new things with the series while still making it feel like classic The Walking Dead, his hope to keep doing things that haven’t been seen in the franchise previously, clearly defining Maggie and Negan’s relationship, and how this new partnership between them could play out in Season 4.

‘Dead City’ Wanted To Shake Things Up for Season 3 While Still Feeling Like Classic ‘The Walking Dead’

“The way I solved that puzzle was to go, ‘Okay, let’s bring these characters back to who they were.’”

COLLIDER: When I spoke to both Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohen about this season, they talked about how exciting it was to be trying some new things and experimenting a bit with characters that they thought they couldn’t know any better than they already did. Why did this season feel like the right season to shake things up in that way?

SETH HOFFMAN: I think for a couple of reasons. When I came on, in talking to the network, they wanted to know, “What can we do that’s new?” And some of the producers wanted it to feel like classic The Walking Dead. It was a puzzle. It was about, “Okay, how do I make it feel classic, but also make it feel new?” The way I solved that puzzle was to go, “Okay, let’s bring these characters back to who they were.” Let’s bring back a version of Maggie that is the hopeful, optimistic version of herself that she was in Season 2, 3, and 4 of the mothership. Let’s bring back the version of Negan that is unpredictable and a little bit of a live wire, who the audience fell in love with in Season 7 and 8 before he got thrown in jail and before he got put under the thumb of the Croat and the Dama. Let’s put those versions of those characters back center stage, and those versions of those characters have never interacted with each other. In that way, it can feel like classic The Walking Dead, but by them engaging with one another, it will feel new and fresh. That was the hope for Season 3.

Is that where the alternate reality episode came from, and even just the little snippet of the sitcom that we get at the beginning of the finale?

HOFFMAN: Yeah. It was, “Here are two characters, and they’re going to be driving us through this season. The concept for Episode 6 was less of a micro decision. I want to push this franchise that I love and that I worked on for three years and that is one of the highlights of my entire career in new directions. I want to see what the limits are for what a Walking Dead episode can be. When I came up with the idea for that episode, when I pitched it to the network, it was, “The Walking Dead does stories where people feel dread, and these people are going to feel dread in this episode because they’re going to be worried that Maggie and Negan are going to hook up. It’s a horror romantic comedy.”

I wanted to push the episodes in different directions, so there are all these little micro decisions like, “How far can we push that scene in the top of the finale towards sitcom and make it still feel like The Walking Dead?” In Episode 5, when we’re introducing the characters in The Dead Squad, that isn’t necessarily a cinematic choice that we’ve seen in The Walking Dead before, but can that be part of The Walking Dead’s language? There were lots of ways in which I was trying to push and make it feel fresh and new while also making it feel like The Walking Dead.

Do you still have some ideas for that kind of experimentation for another season? Like how much have you thought about what a Season 4 could be and what more you could do with it?

HOFFMAN: If we’re lucky to get a Season 4, I will continue to push the envelope. People will see things in a Season 4, if we’re lucky enough to get it, that they’ve never seen in The Walking Dead universe, but also, they will feel like The Walking Dead stories.

‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Season 3 Clearly Defined Maggie and Negan’s Relationship so They Can Move Forward Together

There’s a moment in the finale that feels like it’s been a long time coming when Maggie says to Negan, “You’ve got me. We’re forever connected. We are outright chained to one another.” She’s never going to forgive him, but they’ve moved past it and they’ve gotten closer. What do you love about that moment between them and about how Maggie humanizes Negan?

HOFFMAN: It was important for us to really clearly define Maggie’s relationship towards Negan. I think Negan’s relationship towards Maggie is pretty clear. He kills for her. He wants to protect her. She is so important to him. Maggie’s feelings towards Negan, for a long time, were very defined by, “I hate you, you killed my husband.” In this season, she has let some of that go. So, where is she? We worked hard to really parse the language in that scene to make it clear that she’s not forgiving him and she will never forgive him. She isn’t happy about the fact that Negan, in some ways, makes her a better person. She probably really hates the fact that Negan makes her a better person, but he does.

That’s where they are right now. She could fight against that and try to move away from him and live her own life. Part of what we were trying to say in Episode 6 is, “If you do part, then maybe you’ll fall into old patterns that aren’t necessarily the best version of yourself. Let’s see what happens if the two of you actually do work together for the greater good.” I think, in a Season 4, that would be a really exciting dynamic to explore.

Airing that out also opens it up for Hershel to work with them as a little trio, which you couldn’t have gotten to if that hadn’t happened.

HOFFMAN: A hundred percent. To think about where the two of them were at the beginning of this season versus where they are at the end of this season, it’s a monumental change. Now that these two characters are where they are, it would be incredibly exciting to explore what their next step would be.

At the end of the finale, Maggie hands that badge to Negan so that he can lead security while she’s in charge. What do you think that new partnership between them could be like? How do you see that dynamic working out?

HOFFMAN: A big thing that we’ve done this season is to give both of them something that they care deeply about. They cared deeply about this community, and they want it to thrive. Everything the Croat said in Episode 1, this city has everything to rebuild society in. Both of them, by the end of the season, have really embraced that. This is home. They’re moving into a working relationship, which they’ve never had before. They have different worldviews, they have different strategies, they have different tactics, and they both want the best for the city, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing. Maggie might think one thing is the best, and Negan might think a different thing would be the best. And so, they’ll be in conflict about that, but their conflict won’t be rooted in the fact that Negan killed Glenn. It’ll be rooted in present-day circumstances, which is something both of them really want. That is where their relationship would live in a Season 4.

Joey King is addressing claims she underwent plastic surgery to prepare for her appearance at this year’s Met Gala back in May.

“I didn’t get a facelift,” King, 27, told Owen Thiele on the Friday, September 11, episode of his “In Your Dreams” podcast. “I’m glad we’re talking about this. … Just want to let you know, didn’t get work done, didn’t get a facelift.”

The Practical Magic 2 star went on to reveal what she actually did to get ready to walk the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for the second year in a row.

“What I did do, I got a spray tan,” she recalled. “And then I did a 36-hour fast. No food, nothing but water, which I don’t promote that.”

King explained that she had attended a bachelorette party the weekend before the Met Gala, which resulted in her “looking swollen” because she was “drinking a lot.”

“I looked busted,” she continued. “And I was like, ‘I gotta do a reset. I’m going to do a 24-hour fast, which is good for you to do once a month if you’re healthy enough to do anyway. By the time I woke up and ordered lunch the next day, it wound up being 36 hours and everything.”

In addition to fasting, King said she got a “lymphatic massage” and a facial the day before fashion’s biggest night, followed by another face massage the day of the event.

“We were doing everything we could to look amazing on the carpet, and guess what, it worked because everybody thought I had plastic surgery,” she concluded.

King turned heads at this year’s Met Gala by wearing a sheer Miu Miu gown. She pulled off another stunning sheer look at the Practical Magic 2 premiere in London on August 26, making headlines for her floral gown with yellow Miu Miu undergarments.

King’s casting in Practical Magic 2 as Kylie Owens, the younger daughter of Sandra Bullock’s Sally Owens, has been met with backlash due to the Kissing Booth star replacing Rachel Evan Wood, who played the character in the 1998 original film. (Maisie Williams also replaced Alexandra Artrip as Antonia Owens, Sally’s older daughter.)

Days before Practical Magic 2’s premiere, Wood, 38, threw shade at the cast while praising King.

“I really appreciated Joey King reaching out to me because no one who worked on the original film did. She’s a sweetheart,” she wrote via her Instagram Stories on September 1.

King also told The Hollywood Reporter that she had a “lovely” conversation with Wood in light of the recasting decision.

“I just was so appreciative of the support that she showed to me and to the rest of the cast. She is so talented and so beautiful and she made this role so special when she was a young girl,” King said. “I feel so grateful to be able to play Kylie at this age but I love Evan so much and I’m so appreciative of her kind words and the exchange that her and I shared.”

Wood previously claimed in July 2025 that she was not “asked to come back” for the sequel despite offering her “services.” The film’s director, Susanne Bier, told THR that recasting was necessary to create a “certain age group.”

“In the story, they’re just, like, literally out of college, and with Joey and Maisie it just felt completely right,” she explained.

2026 might go down as one of the most successful years for horror movies in some time. While nothing has quite stacked up to the box office might of The Odyssey or Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the genre dominated the conversation heading into the summer with one hit after another. For all their accomplishments and the other acclaimed macabre titles released so far, like 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple and Hokum, horror’s best year in a while also has an obvious standout — Obsession. Much has been made of YouTuber and Milk & Serial director Curry Barker‘s breakout hit, from its $512.6 million global box office haul, which makes it one of the most profitable movies ever made against its reported $750,000 budget, to its breakout performances from Michael Johnston and especially Inde Navarrette. The film has become nothing short of a cultural phenomenon, both proving how desirable an original IP from a creator outside Hollywood can be and inserting itself into awards conversations. Now that it’s officially available from home, it’s only continuing to dominate on streaming and VOD.

This week, Obsession pulled off a digital trifecta by reaching #1 on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google VOD charts. Making the feat more impressive is the fact that it’s also available to stream on Peacock, yet it’s handily outperforming the titles directly behind it on each list, like Steven Spielberg‘s Disclosure Day and Antoine Fuqua‘s billion-dollar biopic, Michael. With spooky season just around the corner, there may only be more momentum coming for Barker’s smash hit as viewers look to catch up on the scariest films of the year. It certainly managed to frighten critics and audiences as it followed Bear (Johnston) experiencing the increasingly dark and horrific consequences of wishing his crush, Nikki (Navarrette) would love him more than anyone in the world.

What’s Next for the Main Stars Behind ‘Obsession’?

All of Obsession‘s key players have wasted no time lining up their next big roles. Before the film even appeared in front of general audiences, Barker was already tapped to write and direct the next Texas Chainsaw Massacre installment under A24, but that’s just the beginning. His next film with regular partner Cooper Tomlinson, Anything But Ghosts, is already shot and dated for 2027, and Universal and Blumhouse also paid through the nose to secure his next horror pitch.

Navarrette, meanwhile, has a date with the MCU, as she was revealed at D23 to be playing the mutant Rogue in Jake Schreier‘s X-Men movie. Her star will also continue to rise in the bonkers sci-fi package, The Waffle House Index, under Apple Original Films, casting her as a Waffle House graveyard shift employee enduring the most disastrous night imaginable. Last but not least, Johnston hasn’t formally been attached to any projects or confirmed anything yet, but reports have indicated he’s in talks to join Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in the new The Mummy movie from Radio Silence.

‘The Eternaut’ (2025–Present)

The gripping Netflix series The Eternaut definitely belongs on this list of sci-fi shows that wield masterful episodes because, with just six installments, it transforms the end of the world into something horrifyingly personal. Set in Buenos Aires after a deadly snowfall that kills anyone who comes into contact with it, the adapted series follows Juan Salvo (Ricardo Darín) and the people sheltering with him as they quickly realize that survival depends on improvised protective clothing, disciplined cooperation, and isolation; only Juan can’t remain indoors since he desperately needs to find his daughter Clara (Mora Fisz).

The Eternaut can be easily defended as a true masterpiece. Not one of its episodes acts as narrative waste; instead, each captivating chapter pushes survivors further into the mystery while excellently raising the stakes. The Eternaut is definitely a chilling slow-burn with careful progress that doesn’t seem to ever lag, as it uses twists and gradual reveals to deepen its mystery and make the true scale of the threat all the more terrifying. The adapted series is consistently fantastic, with each installment another necessary step into a much larger nightmare. The Eternaut is genuinely able to keep its viewers entertained due to its powerful, high-quality momentum episode after episode, marking it as a well-balanced masterpiece that’s a perfect fit for this list of Netflix’s brilliant sci-fi gems.

‘Pluto’ (2023)

This series is honestly one of Netflix’s most thoughtful sci-fi shows to ever exist. Set in a technologically advanced future where highly sophisticated robots live alongside human beings and possess families, emotions, occupations, and legal protections, the captivating 2023 anime, Pluto, centers around one of the world’s most advanced robots, Europol investigator Gesicht (Shinshu Fuji), who is assigned to investigate a sequence of murders beginning with the destruction of the beloved Swiss robot, Montblanc (Hiroki Yasumoto).

Out of the five on this list, Pluto is definitely the easiest literal case for an amazing series with absolutely no disposable chapters. The anime takes its time, with even the story’s first episode never rushing forward through its setup of the central mystery. Pluto hosts only installments that truly matter, working as double construction as each one solves or complicates a piece of the case, while also asking a much larger ethical question. Pluto is an animated marvel, but its masterpiece status does not rely on its spectacle alone. In actuality, the series is at its most brilliant in its quieter and more emotional scenes, when it dives deep into war, prejudice, hatred, and what it truly means to be human. Even seemingly small conversations can completely reshape how audiences understand a conflict or character. Across eight memorable episodes, Pluto delivers truly masterful works of fiction, making it a remarkable sci-fi series that is worthwhile.

‘Arcane’ (2021–2024)

Arcane is a beloved Netflix animated series that is genuinely one of the clearest examples of Netflix’s most masterful shows, that wields episode after episode of high-quality content. The sci-fi drama, set between the shining city of Piltover and the oppressed underground of Zaun, follows Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and Powder, later known as Jinx (Ella Purnell), who are ripped apart by a childhood tragedy. As the sisters grow up on opposite sides of an escalating conflict, an incredibly smart inventor, known as Jayce Talis (Kevin Alejandro), helps develop the revolutionary technology known as Hextech, all the while tensions thicken between Zaun and Piltover.

Arcane is one of Netflix’s most visually stunning works of fiction. Each one of its episodes changes the characters or their world in a way that directly affects what comes next, making it fantastically tough to pinpoint a single chapter that could be removed without weakening the entire series. Even the show’s much quieter episodes are packed full of political tension, significant character development, and quality details that become increasingly important as the series moves forward. Arcane simply doesn’t just use its installments to move characters toward the next major spectacle; instead, the breathtaking animated series ensures every chapter has a narrative and emotional purpose of its own. It’s one of Netflix’s very best and an easy fit for any list of the platform’s sci-fi shows, where every episode is absolutely masterful.

‘Sense8’ (2015–2018)

Among some of Netflix’s most ambitious gems is a sci-fi series unlike any other in TV history. The quality masterpiece, Sense8 centers around eight strangers—Will Gorski (Brian J. Sense8’s boldness and will to go where very few TV shows have makes it a quality pick for this list of shows with truly masterful installments.

‘Dark’ (2017–2020)

Dark is a complex sci-fi drama that brilliantly wields its episodes as if they’re carefully placed pieces of an incredibly large design. The captivating German series kicks off with the disappearance of children in the small town of Winden. This sets off an investigation that gradually exposes generations of strange events surrounding the town’s nuclear power plant, buried family secrets, and a mysterious passage capable of connecting different periods of time. As the mystery grows, the lives of several families become irrevocably intertwined, revealing that nearly every relationship, character, and seemingly minor event plays a role in a much larger cycle of cause and effect.

Dark is an extremely intricate masterpiece, and each of its episodes holds that very title simply because not one of the show’s chapters stands as wasteful. The series is incredibly complex, and tends to handsomely reward its audience for paying close attention to what may initially seem like insignificant conversations, relationships, objects, and background details, often becoming exceedingly important several installments—or even entire seasons—later. There is definitely no passive viewing with a series like Dark, as its episodes frequently reveal and establish new pieces of the larger, puzzling mystery. With very careful construction, the show delivers extraordinary chapters that can be reasonably announced as masterpieces, ones that maintain an impressive level of quality across three seasons. Dark makes certain that every detail within its compelling story matters, marking it a Netflix sci-fi banger that is a clear example of a 10/10 viewing experience that easily earns its spot on this list.

Reality TV star Tom Sandoval may very well be eyeing his next potential project after Danny Booko and Nia Sanchez walked away from Bravo’s The Valley.

“I mean, I think I would be open to it,” Tom, 44, exclusively told Us of potentially joining the cast of The Valley on Saturday, September 12, while at the Celebrity Travel Lounge presented with Travel By Peta.

“I think I’d be open to it,” Tom reiterated of possibly joining the show.

Tom, who fans first met on the 2013 inaugural season of Vanderpump Rules, is close to many cast members of The Valley, which in addition to Danny and Nia originally included Brittany Cartwright, Jesse Lally, Jax Taylor, Kristen Doute, Michelle Lally, Zack Wickham, Janet Caperna, Jasmine Goode, Jason Caperna and Luke Broderick. (Jax, 47, exited the show after season 2 amid his contentious divorce, while Vanderpump alums Lala Kent and Tom Schwartz joined the show in season 3.)

News broke on September 1 that Danny, 42, and Nia, 36, were walking away from the hit series amid public backlash over Danny’s behavior on the show, including his drinking to excess and the ways in which he spoke to his wife or declined to help with parenting duties. (The pair, who wed in 2015, share four children.)

“We will not be returning to The Valley. We’re incredibly grateful for this experience but our priority is protecting our peace and our family. We are fully committed to each other and our beautiful children,” the pair wrote in a joint statement shared via Instagram at the time. “We want to thank everyone for all the love and support you’ve shown us. Thank you to Bravo and the team for everything. We are looking forward to what the next chapter brings.”

Sandoval told Us that he’s currently close to many of the remaining cast members, revealing why fans have yet to see him appear on the hit reality TV series.

“I would say [I’m close to] Zach, Jesse, Jason, Janet, Luke, Schwartz — obviously — [and] Jasmine,” Sandoval told Us on Saturday. “I’m cool with all of them. You just don’t see me around a lot because, at this point, you know, I like my privacy.”

Sandoval continued of his relationship with BFF and former business partner Schwartz, “Me and Schwartz are doing great. I just hung out with him and [his girlfriend] Kiana [Carroll] this past weekend. It was great. They came to my house, I made them cocktails [and] we had a great time. Great time.”

All three seasons of The Valley are currently streaming on Peacock.

Death, taxes, and an endless stream of Sherlock Holmes adaptations — these are the realities of life. In the last couple of decades, fans have received Guy Ritchie’s swashbuckling film series starring Robert Downey Jr., his more recent Young Sherlock show on Prime Video, an Enola Holmes trilogy on Netflix, and the acclaimed modern-day reimagining starring Benedict Cumberbatch. There have been other adaptations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary stories, but one movie often slips under the radar for several reasons. For starters, it was critically panned and commercially unsuccessful, but more importantly, audiences had simply too many alternatives to choose from. That said, the overlooked Sherlock Holmes adaptation is now available to stream for free to those who have the courage to check it out.

It was released in 2018, only three years after Mr. Holmes, in which Ian McKellen played an aging Sherlock who must solve his final case while combating a deteriorating mind. The acclaimed BBC series starring Cumberbatch had ended its run only a year earlier. In other words, the appetite for new Sherlock Holmes content was still alive. However, the 2018 movie ended up grossing $42 million worldwide against a reported budget in a similar range, proving that audiences weren’t going to turn up for every adaptation. It must be mentioned that this movie wasn’t a classic take on the material at all; in fact, it appeared to be presenting the character as if he exists in the world of Borat.

Here’s Where You Can Watch the Critically Panned Sherlock Holmes Movie for Free

We’re talking about Holmes & Watson, starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. The duo had previously proven their chemistry in cult hit comedy films such as Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and Step Brothers. Holmes & Watson wasn’t able to continue the successful streak, earning a poor 10% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website’s consensus reads, “The lowest and vilest alleys in London do not present a more dreadful record of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson than does Holmes and Watson.” The movie had quite a stacked cast, including Rebecca Hall, Rob Brydon, Bella Ramsey, Ralph Fiennes, Hugh Laurie, and Steve Coogan. When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was in early development, co-creator Akiva Goldsmith announced that the show would follow the episodic format of Star Trek: The Original Series. From the premiere onwards, it’s obvious that the creative team has embraced this ethos — each week has a new enemy and adventure awaiting the crew of the Enterprise. There has been plenty of criticism of the New Trek shows for straying too far from the formula introduced by franchise creator Gene Roddenberry. Both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard eschewed standalone stories for shorter seasons and serialized storytelling, and both shows have already concluded. But to say that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds takes the franchise back to its roots is to disregard the fact that the show was created in the New Trek era. Strange New Worlds combines the best aspects of New Trek, merging it with classic beloved series like The Original Series.

‘Strange New Worlds’ Allows Its Characters To Grow While Remaining Episodic in Format

In the opening scenes of Strange New Worlds, we see that Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is still struggling with the revelations about his future and impending death that he learned about in Star Trek: Discovery. This is an essential aspect of his character, though that premonition doesn’t necessarily define him. Pike doesn’t magically “get over” his struggle either — instead, he works through his trauma, all the while learning that he’s not alone in suffering. Other members of the crew are also recovering from their personal pain. Security Chief La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) grew up under the terror of the Gorn, lost her entire family to the aliens, and was tormented by those around her for being a descendant of the notorious genetic superman, Khan Noonien Singh. Cadet Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), a prodigy on her first Starfleet mission, has a similar story. She was slated to go to university when her parents and brother were all killed in a shuttle accident. Uhura’s well-established plan for her life unraveled, and she lost her sense of belonging before her grandmother guided her toward joining Starfleet.

These stories help Pike contextualize his own pain and his place in the universe. This is a common theme among the characters — secrets and backstories are slowly revealed, bringing the characters closer, but not all of these revelations are conveniently wrapped up in one episode. The creators leave viewers hanging, weaving mysteries from episode to episode. Though each installment of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has a self-contained story and spotlights some of the characters, there are also underlying threads like Pike coping with his trauma and the histories of the crew that are discovered but not concluded.

‘Strange New Worlds’ Straddles the Line Between Two Eras of Star Trek

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ ability to straddle the line between Old and New Trek is in keeping with the rest of the shows in the franchise. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was at its best in the latter seasons when the main arc was the Dominion War. The show perfectly encapsulated an umbrella storyline with episodic storytelling about the crew’s day-to-day lives and duties. This style of writing also influenced Star Trek: Enterprise, and many will argue that Enterprise’s multi-episode arcs were its most memorable. Even Star Trek: Voyager, which was as episodic as it gets, had the through-line of the crew attempting to return home — several of the episode plots were informed by this main mission.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is also able to balance the styles and tones of the two eras. The bright optimism and aura of kindness of the original are obvious in the production design and the character interactions. Though there’s darkness bubbling under the surface of several character arcs, the show doesn’t wallow in it. Pike doesn’t keep the horror of his future to himself; he shares it with his friends. Uhura tells the senior staff about her family’s demise and is accepted for it as well as encouraged to make the best choices for herself. The crew of this Enterprise is much more sheltered than those aboard Discovery or La Sirena, but they’re also living in an era when the Federation is at its most powerful.

‘Strange New Worlds’ Highlights the Entire Crew

The hallmark of the New Trek shows is that these series give the diverse cast plenty of screen time. Star Trek: The Original series was very much a Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and “Bones” McCoy (DeForest Kelley) show. They were given the most screen time and characterization. Strange New Worlds also has a trio of familiar characters with Pike, young Spock (Ethan Peck), and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) taking the lead, but the show still takes the time to let the rest of the cast shine and grow. For a franchise that’s always attempted to be ahead of the curve in terms of representation, this is a welcome change.

What Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has achieved is creating a show that has married the classic style of Star Trek: The Original Series with the over-arching storytelling and sensibilities of the newer shows. The show allows for plenty of growth for its diverse cast, not just the three leads, and has a hopeful tone that’s been missing from the world and the franchise of late. While Star Trek: Strange New Worlds feels like Old Trek, it is still a product of New Trek, which makes it a unique and vital part of the franchise.
