Southampton chief says club punished enough over ‘Spygate’ as Tonda Eckert awaits fate

Published

on

Southampton feel they have received sufficient punishment over the ‘Spygate’ scandal as an independent regulatory commission prepares to hear charges against coach Tonda Eckert this week.

Saints were removed from last season’s Championship play-offs by an independent EFL panel after admitting to spying on three opponents’ training sessions. The penalty denied them a chance at promotion to the Premier League worth at least £200 million.

The same panel also handed them a four-point deduction for the current campaign, with further disciplinary measures looming after Eckert was charged with misconduct by the Football Association in July over the same incidents.

Eckert told the BBC the club has already faced a “big, big punishment”, while Southampton chief executive Phil Parsons said: “What we hope as a club is they (the FA panel) actually recognise where we are at the moment, and what we’ve already been through, because I think it has to be taken into account.

“I really feel like we’ve taken enough. We’ve been hurt. I think it’s one of the largest sanctions ever when it comes to football, or even sporting, history.

“We lose money not being in the Premier League, but (local) businesses lose money. We had to spend a huge amount on legal fees, and it really impacts the club even further. We don’t want to be seen as a victim of this. We need to get on. We’ve had our cards dealt.”

Eckert admitted staff were sent to monitor sessions at Oxford and Ipswich during the regular season, and Middlesbrough before their play-off semi-final in May, where a Southampton intern was confronted by Middlesbrough staff, exposing the scandal.

The German stated he was unaware that spying breached EFL rules.

The EFL panel found younger staff felt pressured to carry out the activity, describing it as “a contrived and determined plan from top down to gain a competitive advantage”.

In a BBC interview published on Monday, Eckert said: “It’s been a big, big punishment. Absolutely unheard of in the history of sports.

“And it’s tough for me to say that because it concerns me. I’m judging on myself, not an outside situation. But I’ve asked for forgiveness for what I’ve done. I’ve apologised publicly.

“I think the punishment has been very hard on the club for the last season.”

Man City get emphatic Elliot Anderson handball verdict amid Sunderland and Arsenal frustration

Manchester City avoided conceding a penalty during the thrilling 5-3 victory over Sunderland in the Premier League

Manchester City have been reassured that referee Robert Jones and VAR Michael Salisbury were right not to award Sunderland a penalty during their 5-3 victory on Sunday. The Black Cats were left frustrated in the second half when the ball hit Elliot Anderson’s hand in the penalty area as the midfielder tussled for possession with Enzo Le Fee.

In his post-match press conference, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris was adamant that a penalty should have been awarded. “It was hard to see that as not a handball. It is what it is and we have to accept the decision. It’s hard to comment,” the manager said.

Reviewing the incident on the latest episode of Ref Watch, former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher insisted the officials got the decision correct. “I didn’t think it was a penalty when I saw it yesterday, and I don’t think it is a penalty now,” Gallagher said.

“I think there’s a lot of interesting things in it. If you look, first of all, when it comes in, the first offence there, the handball, is by the Sunderland player. As it runs on, it strikes Elliot Anderson on the left arm. Watch this. Comes off the Sunderland player, onto the left arm, ricochets onto his right arm. He turns, it hits his hand. His right arm is the one that slaps it away.

“That’s what people haven’t seen. This will show you there. Contact here is on his left arm. Goes up onto his right hand. He’s turning his body.

“He’s got no chance of moving. His arms are already there. He hasn’t moved his arm. It’s turning into the ball. It strikes him, there’s no doubt about that. But I still think, if that’s given as a penalty, it will be overturned, because they will say, It’s just not a deliberate handball. It’s just a consequence.”

Gallagher was then asked if the penalty had been awarded on field, if it would have been allowed to stand or overturned as an error by Jones. “Well, it wasn’t an error because the referee didn’t give it,” Gallagher added.

“I think the VAR would clearly say, no, it’s not, because it’s come off the Sunderland man onto his left arm there. It’s cannoned onto his right hand as he’s turning. It’s not going to be given as a penalty.”

Ugochukwu finished second in the season-ending race, which was enough to secure the title ahead of Freddie Slater. Tuukka Taponen won the race, while Ugochukwu’s consistent results across the season helped him finish 14 points clear in the championship.

Speaking on the pressure of the final weekend, he said: “Today I knew what I had to do to win the championship. So, it was in my hands to keep it clean, keep the cars behind at bay, and just bring it home to the line.”

The 19-year-old described his title battle with Slater as a strong contest throughout the year.

“For sure this is a great step for my career, really important, and it’s a good step for what’s to come,” he added.

The Formula 3 title is Ugochukwu’s second championship of 2026, following his Formula Regional Oceania title earlier in the year. He said Formula 2 is the next logical step towards his dream of reaching Formula 1, but for now, he is enjoying the achievement.
