Venus Williams bows out of her 26th US Open with a 1st-round loss to Sofia Kenin

NEW YORK (AP) — Venus Williams bowed out of her 26th U.S. Open singles appearance early Monday morning, falling in straight sets to fellow American wild card Sofia Kenin after not getting on the court until midnight.

The 46-year-old lost 6-2, 7-6 (6) in what could be the final singles match at a Grand Slam, if not her illustrious career. It was Williams’ 14th consecutive singles defeat dating to her last victory in Washington in July 2025.

Williams has now lost six in a row at the U.S. Open since winning in the first round in 2019.

She and her 27-year-old opponent waited extraordinarily long to take the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium, delayed by Novak Djokovic’s 4-hour, 36-minute defeat to Mariano Navone that threatened to move them next door to Louis Armstrong Stadium. The men’s action ended just in time to play on Ashe — but not before making some history.

At 12:13 a.m., it was the latest start to a match at the U.S. Open, six minutes later than the previous record of Aryna Sabalenka against Ekaterina Alexandrova in the round of 32 in 2024.

Kenin needed just 32 minutes to win the first set, but Williams took advantage of mistakes and made some shots in the second that gave the late-staying crowd reason to cheer, rallying from down 4-2 to force a tiebreak before losing several set points and striking the ball into the net to end it.

Concluding at 2:01 a.m., it became the latest finish for a first-round match in U.S. Open history. It is the third-latest for a women’s match at any stage of the tournament.

Williams is a quarter-century removed from her second of back-to-back championships in New York. She also won Wimbledon five times from 2000-08 to give her seven Grand Slam singles titles.

Williams and sister Serena won 14 in doubles, including the U.S. Open in 1999 and 2009. They are expected to compete in doubles again this year after receiving a wild-card entry.

How Can Nigeria Produce Another Goalkeeper Like Him?

Published

on

Former Super Eagles captain and goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama is celebrating his 44th birthday today, August 29, 2026, as Nigerian football fans continue to remember his remarkable career.

Enyeama remains one of the most celebrated goalkeepers in Nigerian football history and is widely regarded as the last Super Eagles goalkeeper to enjoy a long and consistent spell as the national team’s first choice.

His football journey began in 1999 with his hometown club, the now-defunct Ibom Stars, before he moved on to Iwuanyanwu Nationale and Enyimba in Nigeria.

His career later took him to Israel, where he played for Bnei Yehuda and Hapoel Tel Aviv, before moving to France to join Lille. He also spent time at Maccabi Tel Aviv.

It was, however, his performances for the Super Eagles that made him a household name across Nigeria.

Enyeama made his international debut in 2002 and went on to win 101 caps for the country. He served as Nigeria captain from 2013 until his retirement from international football in 2015.

He was part of the Super Eagles squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013 and also featured at several major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup.

At club level, Enyeama also enjoyed major success. He won the CAF Champions League twice with Enyimba and became a fan favourite at Lille, where he produced one of the finest goalkeeping seasons of his career.

During the 2013 season, he kept 11 consecutive clean sheets in Ligue 1 and went more than 1,000 minutes without conceding a goal.

For many Nigerian football supporters, however, Enyeama’s biggest contribution was his consistency.

For more than a decade, he was trusted as Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper. Since his retirement, the Super Eagles have had several goalkeepers compete for the position, but none has managed to establish himself as firmly and for as long as Enyeama did.

He remained Nigeria’s most-capped player until Ahmed Musa surpassed his 101 appearances in November 2021.

Unlike some of his former Super Eagles teammates, Enyeama has largely stayed away from football since ending his playing career. While former internationals such as Kanu Nwankwo, Jay-Jay Okocha, Victor Ikpeba and Joseph Yobo have taken up roles in football, Enyeama has focused more on business and family life.

He has also been involved in his hospitality business, Vinpy Hotels, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where he has been seen sharing moments with staff and promoting the business.

Enyeama has made occasional appearances around football since his retirement, including taking part in a ceremonial match for Lille in France.

But at 44, there is a strong argument that Nigerian football could still benefit from his experience.

With his knowledge of goalkeeping and his experience at the highest level, it would make sense to see Enyeama take up a role in football coaching or administration, particularly in the development of young goalkeepers.

Nigeria has produced talented goalkeepers over the years, but the challenge has been turning that talent into long-term consistency at international level.

Perhaps the country needs to look at the lessons from Enyeama’s career and create a better pathway for young goalkeepers to develop, gain experience and eventually compete at the highest level.

Enyeama’s career is a reminder of what Nigerian goalkeepers can achieve when they are given the right opportunities and development.

As he celebrates his 44th birthday, the question for Nigerian football is therefore bigger than finding another goalkeeper to replace him.

How can Nigeria create a system capable of producing another Vincent Enyeama?

Main story and 100% completion time

Published

Star Wars Zero Company offers a substantial amount of story content, despite being a tactical strategy game. You step into the shoes of Hawks, a former Republic captain now leading a mercenary group taking on odd jobs in the galactic underworld during the final stages of the Clone Wars. His goal is to pay off a massive debt owed to the Hutt Cartel.

For those wondering, the campaign has a bit of replayability and side content. Wrapping up Operator Bonds, optional missions, and achievements bumps up the completion time in Star Wars Zero Company.

You can expect the following completion time for Star Wars Zero Company:

  • 30 to 40 hours: If you are just completing the main campaign and nothing else
  • 45 to 55 hours: For completing the main quest, along with the side content
  • Over 60 hours: All content, including Beskar Mode achievements, Operator Bonds, and cycle-based missions.

Assuming your first playthrough is on Normal mode, you can expect to clear the game in under 40 hours. However, if you are a completionist, the time required to clear all content will easily push past 60 hours. You will need to play the campaign twice: once on Normal and once on Beskar mode. The latter is required to unlock the Legend achievement.

During your playthrough, check your Holotable for Crisis missions and complete them at the earliest to prevent the enemy coil from growing stronger. To unlock more achievements, complete the Crewmate missions, containing stories associated with your team. Upon completing them, shift to the Critical missions. They include mandatory quests that you can complete within a few cycles.

All regular missions in Star Wars Zero Company are available across 14 chapters:

  • Prologue
  • Business As Usual
  • In Debt to the Hutts
  • Republic Intelligence
  • Smugglers and Slugrats
  • Enter Fathom
  • Jedi Undercover
  • The Umbaran Connection
  • The Fathom Menace
