The historic Grade-II listed Club House at the Scarborough Sports and Tennis Club has been undergoing repair and remedial works in an effort to preserve it.

Built in 1912, the building has fallen into a deteriorated condition following repeated incidents of vandalism.

Located at Filey Road, the Club House has been subjected to prolonged exposure to the elements and new photographs released by the North Yorkshire Council-owned Align Property Services has revealed the extent of the disrepair.

Designed by Sir Edwin Cooper, it is considered nationally rare as a purpose-built tennis clubhouse, and significant for its external elevations, dormers, chimneys, porthole windows, columns and slate roof.

“The structure reflects the development of leisure and recreational architecture within Scarborough and contributes to the understanding of the town’s social history,” according to a council report.

North Yorkshire Council has applied for retrospective permission for repair works, including the removal of the remaining roof covering and the installation of a replacement roof using natural slate to match the existing materials, appearance, and detailing.

Other conservation repairs include works to dormers, cupola, chimneys, timber fascias and soffits, rainwater goods, the west-facing gable, and investigation/repair works to the principal entrance colonnade where required.

The works also include the removal of asbestos-containing materials within the basement, specifically within the former boiler room.

“The works are required to address identified health and safety risks and to facilitate the safe future management and use of the building,” a report states.

Align Property said: “The removal of the existing roof covering will result in the temporary loss of historic fabric.

“However, this is justified by the condition of the roof, which is beyond reasonable repair in its current state. The proposed reinstatement using matching natural slate and traditional detailing will preserve the building’s architectural character and ensure that its significance is maintained.

“The proposed works are necessary to address both structural deterioration and health and safety risks associated with the building. Without intervention, the continued degradation of the roof structure will lead to further loss of historic fabric and potential structural failure.”

UK seeks extradition of Andrew and Tristan Tate as CPS decides to prosecute brothers over further alleged sexual offences

The Crown Prosecution Service has requested the extradition of Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan after the siblings were arrested in the United States.

The Tates were taken into custody by US Marshals outside of the James L Knight Center in Miami on Saturday afternoon, just moments before Andrew was due to host a bareknuckle boxing event.

Controversial influencer Andrew, 39, is being charged with seven further counts of rape, three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and 19 additional charges for offences relating to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography.

His 38-year-old brother Tristan’s charges include one count of sexual assault, two counts of rape and three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the 38 additional charges, in addition to 21 existing charges, relate to alleged offences between July 2010 and August 2017.

Andrew faces a total of 42 charges, and Tristan faces 17. The brothers have strongly denied any wrongdoing.

The Tates’ lawyer Joseph McBride said the decision to seek the brothers’ extradition to the UK was done by Sir Keir Starmer as one of his last acts before he resigns as Prime Minister on Monday.

Mr McBride said Donald Trump would support the brothers as the US President ‘hates political persecution and communism’.

Malcolm McHaffie, head of the special crime division at the CPS, said: ‘We have decided to prosecute Andrew and Tristan Tate for further offences, including rape, arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation and offences relating to indecent images of a child.

‘These charging decisions followed receipt of a further file of evidence from Bedfordshire Police and bring the total number of alleged victims in this case to seven.

‘The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and that these defendants have the right to a fair trial.

‘It is extremely important that there be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.

‘The CPS has requested the extradition of the Tates from the US. They have been arrested and await extradition proceedings to the UK.’

Bedfordshire Police said the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit had been continuing to investigate a number of other offences reported to both them and Hertfordshire Constabulary.

Bedfordshire Police Assistant Chief Constable Karena Thomas said: ‘Officers from our Major Crime Unit have been working closely alongside the Crown Prosecution Service and both national and international law enforcement agencies as part of this complex investigation.

‘We understand the interest that this case will generate, but we would urge the public not to speculate and to allow the legal process to be carried out correctly.

‘There is no place for male violence against women and girls, and we will continue to work tirelessly to support victims and investigate all reports made to us.’

Mr McBride described the new charges as ‘filth and slander’ designed to counter defamation charges filed by the Tates in the US.

He told the Associated Press: ‘They’re pulling out all the stops to make sure these guys never get their day in court.

‘We are confident that, once a competent judge sees the facts, and once the Department of Justice confronts this egregious abuse of its own authority, Andrew and Tristan Tate will walk free. America does not do Britain’s political dirty work.’

The brothers are facing legal proceedings in Romania, where they currently live, and were facing extradition to the UK upon their completion after Bedfordshire Police secured European arrest warrants for the pair in 2024.

The brothers have ‘unequivocally’ denied wrongdoing, with Andrew describing himself and his brother as ‘very innocent men’.

In June, their bid to bring a legal challenge against the CPS, after it did not disclose the names of their alleged victims in UK criminal proceedings, was thrown out by a High Court judge.

Lawyer Matt Jury, of McCue Jury & Partners who represent four alleged British victims, said: ‘Andrew Tate is now facing the real prospect of extradition to the UK after years of public campaigning by the four British women I represent.

‘They have spent years fighting for action to be taken, and I now urge the authorities to ensure this case proceeds as quickly as possible.

‘Andrew and Tristan Tate are accused of some of the most serious offences, including multiple counts of rape and human trafficking. It is time they face justice.’

Claudia Winkleman features in new BBC campaign days after quitting talk show

Published

Manchester Evening News

The new ad features Alan Carr, Peter Capaldi, Sara Cox, Graham Norton and Vernon Kay

Claudia Winkleman has featured in a new BBC campaign just days after announcing that she has quit her talk show.

It’s been a frantic period for Claudia, who presents The Traitors and spin-off The Celebrity Traitors for the BBC, with her stepping down from presenting Strictly Come Dancing after 15 years last December, alongside co-host Tess Daly. The duo were seen bowing out of their roles back in December.

Earlier in the year, viewers saw her interview celebrity guests in front of a studio audience for the first time on The Claudia Winkleman Show. The Friday night show featured the likes of Jennifer Saunders, Dan Levy and Jeff Goldblum as guests.

Of the chat show’s future, Claudia said last week: “I’m incredibly grateful to the BBC for giving me the opportunity, to the guests who agreed to come and chat to me, and the production team who were simply excellent.

“Sometimes you have to try something to see how it fits, and I realised I was just too nervous to enjoy it. Maybe one day I will give it another try, but for now I already have the best jobs in the world and absolutely love the shows I’m doing.”

On Sunday (July 19), Claudia was one of early 100 stars taking part in a new campaign to promote the BBC. Fronted by comedian Romesh Ranganathan, the three-minute film brings together 90 household names from across the BBC.

The ad celebrates the BBC’s ‘extraordinary cultural footprint to answer one simple question: What has the BBC ever done for me?’. Romesh is seen traveling through a string of the best-known BBC programmes, sets and studios, encountering familiar faces that each help him answer the question in their own way.

Kicking off in EastEnders’ famous Queen Vic pub, Romesh reads the front page of a paper that asks ‘Is the BBC really worth it?’. He then tells barmaid Tracey, played by Jane Slaughter: “It’s a good question. You have got to ask – what has the BBC ever done for me?”

A man playing the piano with his back turned to the camera is then revealed to be Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, before a string of stars are rolled out, including Claudia. She is seen standing beside two of the Traitors’ hooded figures as she pulls a pint of ‘Traitors Ale’.

Stepping out into the street, Romesh tells viewers that the BBC has responsible for ‘introducing the nation to Adele’, verifies news ‘thoroughly’, and also offers Mary Berry, Glastonbury and ‘celebs on the telly’.

The campaign then highlights how the BBC delivers coverage of Wimbledon, ‘a love of nature’ through shows including Springwatch, and even avoids having advertisements. Walking through the set of Call The Midwife, Romesh says the BBC ‘does a lot for British storytelling’.

Pushing back against critics of the national broadcaster, he declares ‘stuff your Apprentice and Match Of The Day’ before Louis Theroux appears in a studio with his hand hovering over a switch and warning that ‘none of this exists if we don’t want it to’.

Handed a folder, Romesh then reads out statistics that state that the money the public pays to the BBC creates more than six and half billion pounds for the economy, which he adds sounds ‘pretty good’.

The ad concludes with him being pushed onto a stage which turns out to be the Strictly dancefloor, he asks viewers one final time, ‘What has the BBC ever done for me?’, before judge Anton Du Beke appears and holds up a score paddle showing a 10 but is told to ‘bog off’.

Wrapping up the ad, text on screen reads: “There’s a BBC for each of us. Funded by all of us.”

The campaign film also features Alan Carr, Peter Capaldi, Sara Cox, Graham Norton, Vernon Kay, Greg James and Ruth Jones. On top of this Cate Blanchett, Daisy Ridley, Chris McCausland, Clive Myrie and Stacey Solomon, as well as Pudsey Bear and a number of Daleks also appear.

Inspired by the 1986 BBC campaign featuring John Cleese, the new film reimagines the question for a generation 40 years later. It was directed by Paddington In Peru’s Dougal Wilson and features music from Ben Foster, Ben Bailey Smith and Andy Burrows, performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra and BBC Singers.

In a blog to accompany the campaign, the BBC chief customer officer Kerris Bright wrote that the aim of the campaign was to ‘ensure the BBC gets credit for the fundamental impact it has on society, as well as the things it makes’.

She added the campaign came at an ‘important moment’ahead of the Government beginning the process of renewing the BBC’s Royal Charter and how the organisation should be funded.

Johnny Vegas provides rare insight into relationship with long-term girlfriend Vikki Jones

Published

Manchester Evening News

The beloved UK comedian has been married twice in the past

Johnny Vegas has provided a rare insight into his relationship with his long-term girlfriend Vikki Jones.

The comedian tied the knot to his first wife Catherine ‘Kitty’ Donnelly in August 2002, with him meeting the interior designer in a pub in London. When it came to their wedding day, the former couple decided to sell photos of the big day to Viz magazine for just a pound in a jab at celebrity wedding shoots.

Welcoming their son Michael Pennington into the world in 2003, Johnny and Catherine split up in 2006 and divorced two years later. Johnny would go on to marry Irish TV presenter Maia Dunphy in 2011 in Spain, with his second wife known in Ireland for competing in Celebrity Masterchef: Ireland and Dancing with the Stars, the Irish version of Strictly.

In 2015, Maia gave birth to their son Tom, and wrote a book titled M Word: For Women Who Happen to Be Parents about her road to motherhood. She confirmed ‘with a heavy heart’ in 2018 that she and Johnny had separated the year prior.

She posted on X, previously known as Twitter: “We are telling people now because speculation is unhelpful at best, and dangerous at worst. As we think is obvious, we continue to fully support each other, there is no acrimony, no story and no one else involved.”

Johnny has been dating art gallery owner Vikki for the past three years. She’s recently begun helping him with his Cheshire shop, which features on the Quest show Johnny Vegas’ Little Shop Of Antiques.

Speaking in a new interview, Johnny said that Vikki joined his business so they could spend ‘more quality time together’ and that it’s been ‘great for their relationship. The Benidorm actor said: “They say never work with your partner, but it’s great. She and Bev make fun of me most of the time.”

Talking to The Times, Johnny admitted that he hasn’t been keeping Vikki out of the spotlight intentionally. This is due to him tending to keep his social media posts focused on his work.

“I wasn’t keeping it under cover, but I don’t share much about it on social media,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Johnny stated that his decision to pursue a new career away from stand-up was due to performing in front of thousands of people beginning to ‘take its toll’.

He explained: “Stand-up was great, but it was manic. The nerves took their toll. Never say never, but I just see that as a project that needs to rest.”

It’s been a candid few years for Johnny, who announced in 2023 that he was diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), admitting at the time that it ‘made sense of a lot of things’.

He told the Radio Times: “Talking to other people about it, as well. There are behavioural traits I now understand around timekeeping, tidiness, hitting deadlines, not getting overwhelmed at the start of the day and being motivated in the direction you need to be.

“ADHD is like having a head full of butterflies, and sometimes you’ll catch one. It’s good to share and not beat myself up about not doing something, but I don’t want to trade off it or use it to make excuses.”

The most expensive celebrity weddings of all time after Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce followed in Lauren and Jeff Bezos’ footsteps with lavish $20million nuptials

Published

on

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have followed in the footsteps of other expensive celebrity weddings with their lavish $20million nuptials

She’s spent her whole life writing some of the best songs of all time about love and heartbreak.

So when Taylor Swift finally found her happily ever after with American football star Travis Kelce, it should come as no surprise that their wedding would be a huge and extravagant affair to celebrate.

The billionaire music superstar, 36, had a famously tumultuous love life and string of high-profile romances before all her dreams came true with Kelce, also 36.

They wed on July 3 at Madison Square Garden in front of a whopping 1,000 guests – and no expense was spared after she’d finally found her perfect match.

But Taylor isn’t the only huge star to splash the cash on tying he knot… let’s take a look at the most expensive celebrity weddings of all time:

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have followed in the footsteps of other expensive celebrity weddings with their lavish $20million nuptials

Breathtaking footage obtained exclusively by the Daily Mail last week offered a first look inside their top-secret New York City wedding.

It was a fairytale made real: Madison Square Garden transformed into an enchanted garden of towering trees, emerald drapery and soaring archways. There, the couple said ‘I do’ before a room of A-listers, lifelong friends and family.

Guests could be seen gathering at the altar before disappearing through a hidden set of doors and into the couple’s dreamlike reception.

The video showed the room buzzing as Candi Staton’s disco anthem ‘Young Hearts Run Free’ plays.

Stars dressed to the nines then filed through the doors behind the altar following the ceremony, where Swift reportedly walked down the raised, stage-like aisle to a string arrangement of one of her own songs.

One guest told the Daily Mail that after the vows, attendees ‘headed into the festivities room behind the altar’s magic doors’ – where the real party began.

The guest described an interior styled in a ‘whimsical Tinker Bell fairytale’ theme.

The exclusive video also showed a romantically lit hallway with pink walls, peach drapery and matching carpet.

The entrance also featured a sentimental touch as several photos of the couple throughout their relationship were featured on the walls.

All of the sweet photos, including the couple’s August 2025 backyard proposal, were inside large gold frames. A large ‘T and T’ logo, which seems to have featured in other parts of the nuptials, was displayed in the centre.

Industry experts estimated that Swift and Kelce spent more than $15million to transform the venue into the fairytale wedding of their dreams.

And a source told The New York Times that between lighting, sound, catering, flowers, decorations and labor, it could cost between $10million and $12million.

Leading up to the big day, there were several NYPD officers and security members patrolling MSG, which reportedly cost taxpayers about $1million.

The celebrities attending included Gigi Hadid, Selena Gomez, Hugh Grant and Greg James.

The singer previously defended her giant guestlist, telling Graham Norton – who was also invited – last year: ‘I think the only stressful weddings are the ones where you have a small amount [of guests] and people are on the bubble, right?

‘And you have to evaluate and asses your relationship with them to see if they should be there,’ she said. ‘I’m not gonna do that.’

‘Anyone that I’ve ever talked to [is invited],’ she joked before later adding, ‘I shouldn’t have said any of that.’

Lauren and Jeff Bezos – $20M

Taylor Swift’s nuptials were undoubtedly the biggest celebrity wedding since Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s ceremony with The View host Lauren Sanchez last summer.

With a $20million budget, the most high-profile of A-list guests and the backdrop of Venice, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, the wedding was a highly-anticipated event last year.

But despite the glamour, the nuptials left many with a sour taste.

Even before they arrived, protests by Venetian locals accusing the pair of ‘taking over the city’ had suggested the wedding would not be as smooth sailing as they had been hoped for.

While A-listers had flocked to the Italian city – including the likes of the Kardashian and Jenner sisters and their mother – there were some notable no-shows, such as Lauren’s long-time best friend, Desperate Housewives’ Eva Longoria, who had been at her hen do in Paris in May.

And one of the most famous faces present – actor and climate change warrior Leonardo DiCaprio – seemed to want to hide completely under a low-sitting baseball cap following backlash at his attendance.

Some questioned the apparent contradiction between his climate activism and his presence at a lavish event, possibly involving private jet travel – a point raised by several media outlets.

About a dozen Venetian organisations – including housing advocates, anti-cruise ship campaigners and university groups – protested under the banner ‘No Space for Bezos’ amid complaints he has ‘taken over the city’.

The banner was a play on words referring to his space exploration company Blue Origin and the bride’s space flight.

One group displayed a banner which read: ‘Money cannot buy style.’

Another banner read: ’55 million dollars spent on the wedding just to get a divorce in three days’.

Greenpeace activists unfurled a huge banner in St Mark’s Square, the iconic heart of Venice, protesting against the wedding.

It showed an image of Bezos’s face and the slogan: ‘If you can rent Venice for your wedding then you can pay more tax’.

Activists from British group Everyone Hates Elon were also involved and said they had carried it out to highlight the ‘environmental and social injustice of the wedding’.

Lauren and Jeff, however, seemed to be unfazed by all the criticism of their ostentatious display.

The couple were hounded by local journalists as they left the Aman hotel – where rooms start at well over $1,000 a night – with one reporter asking: ‘What do you think about the protests, Jeff?’

But while Lauren valiantly ignored the yelled questions, the Amazon founder – who is worth some $230billion – simply said: ‘Love you guys’, before blowing a kiss to the cameras.

Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz – $3.5M

Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz got married at the Peltz $103million family estate in Palm Beach, Florida (pictured at their 2025 vow renewal)

Back in 2022, the billionaire family of Brooklyn‘s wife Nicola were criticised for spending $3.5million (£2.7million) on the couple’s lavish wedding in Palm Beach, Florida.

The newlyweds said ‘I do’ on a stage garlanded with flowers and plants in a huge marquee at the Peltz $103million (£79million) ocean-side family estate, with the bride’s parents – financier Nelson and his wife Claudia – footing the astronomical bill.

However, many people took to Twitter to express their opinions on the excessive show of wealth, with a large proportion suggesting the money would have been better spent on helping those in genuine need.

Bride Nicola stunned in an incredible Valentino bridal gown while clutching a bouquet of white flowers near the chuppah, in which the couple wed in a Jewish ceremony.

Her incredible gown boasted a stunning sweeping veil, which featured delicate lace embellishing, as Nicola was every inch the blushing bride.

The actress flew to Rome twice to work with Valentino designer Pier Paolo Piccioli at his studio to ensure every detail of the outfit was perfect.

Nicola and aspiring chef Brooklyn were married in an early evening ceremony in one of three massive tented structures constructed on the sprawling ocean front lawn of her father Nelson’s compound in Florida.

Guests including tennis legend Serena Williams, TV chef Gordon Ramsay and Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria could clearly be seen enjoying cocktails as well as Brooklyn’s famous family of course.

The 300 revellers then moved to the lavish banqueting tent for the rest of the festivities.

Fast forward four years and Brooklyn would sensationally fall out with all of his family – releasing a scathing statement about them in January this year where among other things he accused them of trying to ruin his wedding to Nicola.

Salma and her billionaire partner married on Valentine’s Day 2009 in a civil ceremony in Paris. A few months later came a lavish two-day affair.

She wore a $400,000 Balenciaga dress by Nicolas Ghesquiere for the occasion.

Things kicked off with a masquerade ball rehearsal dinner at the Punta della Dogana. Guests at the ball wore gold and black masks.

The groom’s family had purchased the old building in 2007 and paid for its restoration. In June 2009, it reopened to the public as an art museum featuring temporary exhibits from the Pinault Collection.

The ceremony took place in the La Fenice Opera House, one of the oldest in Europe. Among those taking part were the groom’s children from his first marriage and the couple’s daughter. After the ceremony, guests sang Over The Rainbow.

Those attending the wedding included Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Charlize Theron, Lily Cole, Ashley Judd, Woody Harrelson, Anna Wintour, Bono, David Blaine, Jacques Chirac and other celebrities.

The reception was held in the Palazzo Grassi, a significant location for the pair as they first met at a gala there in 2006. The Pinault family purchased the building in May 2005. The couple got engaged in 2007 and their daughter was born in September of that year.

The couple had previously got married at the 6th Arrondissement City Hall in Paris on Valentine’s Day earlier that year in a small ceremony with family and planned a larger celebration a few months later. They currently celebrate both anniversaries.

In an interview with Glamour in 2023, the actress said she had no idea that she would be getting married that day until her family got involved.

‘They just took me to the court My parents, my brother, they were all ganging up on me. I had a phobia of the marriage thing.’

On the 15th anniversary of their first wedding ceremony, the Frida actress shared a photo of the two together.

‘After 18 years together and 15 years of marriage, you still make loving you easy, fun, deep and fresh like a gentle breeze. Happy anniversary mi amor,’ she wrote.

She was surprised by her husband with a third ceremony in 2018, a vow renewal on Bora Bora.

In a 2017 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the actress credited her long and happy marriage to marrying ‘the right guy’ and cited the couple’s support of each other as a strength of their marriage.

‘We want the other one to strive. Makes you happy when the other one strives. And you know what, we don’t have a very strong social life, because we really like to spend time together. So we do spend a lot of quality time together,’ said the actress.

The pair wed back in 2014 in Venice and no expense was spared.

They had their ceremony at the Aman Canal Grande hotel with the likes of Anna Wintour, Matt Damon, model Cindy Crawford, singer Bono and actress Emily Blunt in attendance.

The bride wore a custom-made off-the-shoulder Oscar de la Renta French lace wedding dress with a veil while George chose his favourite designer, Giorgio Armani, to create his tuxedo.

People reported that those assembled broke out into spontaneous applause when the couple – who were first linked in October 2013 – were declared man and wife during the 30-minute ceremony.

George previously revealed they always planned to marry in Italy as that is where the couple first met and it holds special memories for them.

He and Amal were married at approximately 8pm by his friend Walter Veltroni, the former mayor of Rome, in front of a sea of famous faces.

According to reports, the highly-anticipated service was incredibly romantic.

The couple held hands as they exchanged vow they had written themselves as they stood underneath a beautiful arch made from imported white roses.

Following the ceremony, guests were met with champagne and canapes including polenta with wild mushrooms and prosciutto ham with figs, according to a source.

They then tucked into a delicious five-course gourmet dinner – consisting of lobster, risotto, sea bass and beef – while listening to music from a small string orchestra.

The party kicked off on the other side of the hotel in the Venetian Republic room, where guests ate, drank and danced until the early hours of Sunday morning, with some not retiring to their beds until 5am.

Meanwhile, Pitt wore a black tux designed by Hedi Slimane and his groomsman wore Prada tuxedos.

The ceremony was said to have cost a whopping $1million with $75,000 on flowers, $20,000 on heart-shaped fireworks and $100,000 for security.

The ceremony incorporated 50,000 flowers, four bands, a 40-member gospel choir and fireworks display.

Guests dined on shrimp, gourmet pizza and caviar, and drank Dom Pérignon champagne.

The wedding breakfast saw lobster, crab, peppercorn beef, risotto and pasta served.

In Brad’s vows he vowed to ‘split the difference on the thermostat’ while Aniston said she’d always make his ‘favourite banana milkshake’.

They split five years later – soon after he filmed Mr and Mrs Smith with Angelina Jolie.

Pitt and Jolie would go on to have a relationship and parent six children together, three of which they adopted. They wed in 2014 and split in 2019.

Andy Burnham will be bolder but stick to Labour manifesto, Lucy Powell says

Published

on

Graphic representing sunshine with blue sky behind

Burnham was officially declared Labour Party leader on Friday following a short contest in which he was the only candidate, having secured the backing of 379 MPs.

Some opposition parties have urged Burnham to call a general election in order to ensure he has a mandate for his premiership.

However, Powell insisted Burnham would stick to the promises made in Labour’s manifesto in the 2024 general election.

“Our manifesto did talk about the redistribution of power, it did talk about the rewiring of our country, it did talk about taking on some of those vested interests,” she said.

“He [Burnham] really understands the bigger, bolder measures that are needed to live up to the manifesto promises.”

She also said his leadership was a chance to “reset” and that scrapping the digital ID scheme was a “small example of reprioritising”.

In one of his first announcements since becoming Labour leader, Burnham said he would ditch the plan announced by Sir Keir last year.

Powell said the scheme would have cost a “not insignificant amount of money” but would also have diverted attention from the government’s priorities.

Separately, the BBC has been told Burnham’s government will announce plans for new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea.

Powell said Burnham would be “pragmatic” on the subject, adding: “I don’t think it’s a change of policy. It’s more a change of emphasis.”

The announcement is expected to be part of a package of measures including plans to take water and energy companies under public control and a new council house-building programme.

Burnham has previously said he wants to see “greater public control” of the water and energy sectors and has called for Thames Water to be nationalised.

In her interview with the BBC, Powell also backed increased public ownership, arguing the economy had been “overly privatised” and the “utilities and essentials of life don’t work in the interest of ordinary people”.

She said bills were “going up and up because they are run in the interests of private interest, not for the consumers or for taxpayers”.

But, speaking to the same programme, former Conservative minister Jacob Rees-Mogg said: “The water industry needs private capital or it has to have taxpayers’ money – no other money is available.”
